Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day An 11-year-old boy experiences a calamitous day and learns that he’s not alone when his family members face their own tribulations in this comedy based on the Judith Viorst children’s book. With Ed Oxenbould, Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner. Rated PG, 80 minutes. — LAT The Best of Me Two former high school sweethearts find themselves reunited after 20 years apart when they return to their small town for the funeral of a beloved friend, but the forces that drove them apart live on. With Michelle Monaghan, James Marsden and Luke Bracey. Directed by Michael Hoffman. Rated PG-13, 118 minutes. — Los Angeles Times The Book of Life In this animated movie, a conflicted hero and dreamer embarks on an epic quest through magical worlds to rescue his one true love and defend his village. With the voices of Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana and Channing Tatum. Directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez. Rated PG, 95 minutes. — LAT Dracula Untold An origin story about the man who became Dracula. With Luke Evans, Sarah Gadon and Dominic Cooper. Written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Directed by Gary Shore. Rated PG-13, 92 minutes. — LAT The Equalizer (★★1⁄2) Denzel Washington plays a deadly vigilante who takes revenge for the beating of a young woman (Chloe Grace Moretz) by wiping out a Russian mob headed by a surly boss (Marton Csokas). This act sets off the film’s resulting revenge-action tale, ably but not impressively choreographed by director Antoine Fuqua. Based on the 1980s TV show, the film delivers the action but without anything fresh. Rated R, 126 minutes. — B.A. Fury (★★★) Brad Pitt stars as a top sergeant in World War II in charge of a tight-knit tank crew (Jon Bernthal, Michael Pena and Shia LaBeouf) joined by a raw soldier (Logan Lerman). Writer-director David Ayer delivers a fairly standard war movie. The special effects help render a grim, realistic portrait of men in battle. Rated R, 135 minutes. — B.A. Gone Girl (★★★★) Ben Affleck stars as Nick, whose wife, Amy (an excellent Rosamund Pike), goes missing. Initially an object of pity, Nick becomes a public pariah when it looks like he may have killed her. Then the tables turn with a string of unexpected surprises. Director David Fincher works from the novel by Gillian Flynn, who also wrote the screenplay. Fine supporting cast includes Carrie Coon, Tyler Perry, Kim Dickens and Neil Patrick Harris. Rated R, 145 minutes. — B.A. John Wick (★★★) Keanu Reeves stars as the title character, a retired hit man brought back into the business when Russian mobsters steal his 1969 Mustang and kill his beagle
OPENING FRIDAY Before I Go to Sleep Again teamed with Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman stars as an amnesia victim whose brain resets back to 13 years ago after each night’s slumber in the decidedly average psychological thriller Before I Go to Sleep. Writerdirector Rowan Joffe’s adaptation of S.J. Watson’s best-seller honors the lurid spirit of the page-turner enough to satisfy fans, but he doesn’t transmute the material into something richer and deeper as, say, Hitchcock would. Joffe shows a singular lack of originality when it comes to the thriller mechanics. With Mark Strong and Anne-Marie Duff. Rated R, 92 minutes. — The Hollywood Reporter Force Majeure (★★★1⁄2) A well-todo Swedish couple and their two children on a ski vacation dine outside at a mountain restaurant. When a controlled avalanche erupts dangerously close, the man seems to run off, leaving his family behind. No one is hurt, but later, the wife’s perception of the event so contradicts her husband’s that they argue bitterly, bringing their marriage and relationship into question. Biting examination of middle-class perceptions and expectations. Rated R, 118 minutes. Directed by Ruben Ostlund. At the Angelika Film Center in Dallas. — Boo Allen Horns (★★) When the girlfriend (Juno Temple) of a young Seattlearea man (Daniel Radcliffe) is murdered, he is accused. The next morning, horns begin to grow on his head. The special powers they give him help as he tries to find her murderer. Not always successful mix of mystery, comedy and horror. Director Alexandre Aja fills his film, based on Joe Hill’s novel, with biblical allusions. Rated R, 120 minutes. At AMC The Parks at Arlington. — B.A. Missionary (★★1⁄2) Katherine (Dawn Olivieri), separated from her husband Ian (Kip Pardue), is grateful when Kevin (Kevin Ryan), one of two Mormon missionaries, stops long enough to pay attention to her young son. Before long, mom and Kevin have an incongruous fling. When Ian returns to the fold and Katherine tries to stop her brief affair, Kevin objects. He then becomes a standard, garden-variety stalker-slasher. Director Anthony Di Blasi delivers a few frightful moments despite the thematic incongruity. Rated R, minutes. At Studio Movie Grill Spring Valley in Dallas. — B.A.

Gyllenhaal unleashes the weirdo within
Denton Time
By Jocelyn Noveck

AP National Writer
The most frightening thing about Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler — even more than those sallow, sunken cheeks, those googly eyes, and that unkempt hair tied into a greasy bun — is his smile. They invented the word “creepy” for that smile, a goofy, confident grin that reaches its full breadth just when you’re starting to realize how deranged this guy really is. Gyllenhaal’s bold, committed performance makes Nightcrawler one of the most entertaining movies of the year — though hardly the most profound. The film seeks to convey the seaminess of local TV news, summed up by the phrase “If it bleeds, it leads.” The thing is: We already knew this. And frankly, there are so many disturbing things going on in the world right now that it’s hard to get too worked up about it. But that doesn’t mean that Nightcrawler — think Network, transformed into a taut action film — isn’t a compelling and altogether impressive directorial debut for screenwriter Dan Gilroy (The Bourne Legacy). Gilroy starts slowly, then ups the pace until we’re truly breathless by the culmination of the final action scene. It’s a doozy, gorgeously handled by cinematographer Robert Elswit, who makes nighttime Los Angeles a simultaneously chilling and beautiful place. Gyllenhaal plays Lou Bloom, a forlorn petty thief when we first meet him, who scours desolate places like construction sites — deep in the night — to rip off barbed wire and manhole covers, then sell them for cash. But soon, on his nocturnal travels, Lou discovers the “nightcraw-

Petty thief Lou (Jake Gyllenhaal) finds a new hobby in “Nightcrawler.”
lers” — freelance cameramen who follow police scanner traffic to grisly scenes. Transfixed, he sells his bike to buy a scanner and cheap camera, and he’s off. At first he’s lost, filming mundane things like someone taking a Breathalyzer test. But soon, he gets the point. Acquiring explicit footage one night of a gasping carjack victim, Lou takes it to KWLA, where Nina (the ever-appealing
Rene Russo), news director on the graveyard shift, knows she’s found a great source of sleaze for her low-rated broadcast. Explaining her ethos after they make their first deal, she tells Lou the best footage he could ever bring her would be “a screaming woman running down the street with her throat slit.” Gradually Lou’s camerawork gets better, and he gets bolder. At the scene of a home invasion, he enters through an unmanned door, then rearranges family photos on the fridge for a better shot. Is there any question that soon, he’ll be rearranging a corpse? Slowly, the scope of Lou’s
bald ambition becomes apparent. Gilroy, who also wrote the screenplay, is smart not to rush this. At first, Lou’s self-improvement mumbo jumbo — he’s formed a “business plan” based on inspirational stuff he’s found online — is funny. Soon, it’s not. Of course, other people are merely pawns in Lou’s managerial scheme. Those doomed to suffer include Joe (Bill Paxton), a “nightcrawler” who stands in Lou’s way at his peril, and Rick (an excellent Riz Ahmed), a drifter Lou “hires” to become his navigator-assistant. Their “job interview” in a diner is the film’s funniest scene. Asked the salary, Lou replies: “It’s an internship.” And what’s the scariest
scene? That one actually involves no blood. It’s the moment Lou explains to Nina just the price she’ll have to pay to keep his services. It involves much more than money. Brrrr. The mere thought makes the blood run cold. It’s not too long, of course, before the ante has risen so high, Lou becomes not just the guy who gets to the scene first, but the guy who sets up the crime. The film suggests that it’s our own bottomless desire for blood, every night at 6 and 11, that creates this monster. Maybe. But the character Gyllenhaal and Gilroy have created is monstrous enough. Pass the popcorn.
Willem Dafoe, Ian McShane and Adrianne Palicki. Rated R, 101 minutes. — B.A. Ouija A group of friends must confront their most terrifying fears after awakening the dark powers of an ancient spirit board. With Olivia Cooke, Douglas Smith and Bianca Santos. Written by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White. Directed by White. Rated PG-13, 89 minutes. — LAT
St. Vincent (★★★1⁄2) Movie about a curmudgeon stars the singular Bill Murray at his grumpy best — his eyes in a perpetual roll, annoyed by anyone and everything, but somehow earning affection from those who annoy him. Dark Path offers thrills next to Goatman’s Bridge By Adam Schrader Staff Writer aschrader@neighborsgo.com
he Dark Path Haunt is a new attraction that transforms an outdoor trail, a Denton County legend, mythical creatures and infamous killers into a realistic terror-fest. It’s Friday night, roughly 9 p.m. I’m spending the weekend alone; my girlfriend is out of town. I head out to the haunt. When I arrive, I approach the ticket tent, excited about experiencing something frightening. The Dark Path site is next to Old Alton Bridge. The so-called Goatman’s Bridge, constructed in 1884, once connected Alton — the now-vanished town that served as the county seat before Denton was established — and Lewisville. This is the legend: In the early 1900s, Oscar Washburn settled north of the bridge. Washburn, a goat farmer, was Afri-

can-American. The community grew to love and respect him, affectionately calling him the goat man. He embraced it and displayed a “This way to the Goatman” sign on the bridge. Klansmen didn’t take kindly to it. They dragged him from his home and lynched him from the bridge. But when they peered over the side and looked toward the water, they saw only the rope. Claiming witchcraft, they murdered his family by burning their shanty. Since then, many have reported a ghostly man herding goats over the bridge. Some have claimed spotting a half-goat, half-man creature. During the past 86 years, thrillseeking young people have snuck out for the chance to see the Goatman. Now, guests hope for a chance to see him incorporated into the haunt.
Down the dark path After purchasing a ticket, the clerk
informs me that I must sign a liability waiver in case I have a heart attack or something like that. I shrug, sign the form and join the line. It’s moving slower than expected and the frightened faces of those who have just experienced the haunt are a bit jarring. For a moment, I wish I had not signed the waiver. Good friends Camiron Cox and Flo Florence, both 14, have arrived with Connie Cox, Camiron’s mother. While they talk, a high-pitched scream emanates from the woods. Camiron hides behind her mother. “[Camiron] almost peed her pants over there and it hasn’t even started,” Connie says with a nervous laugh, adding that it was her daughter’s idea to come to the Dark Path. They continue to chat as characters scare guests in line. Isaac Woods serves as ringmaster. See HAUNT on 10

Haunt He entertains the guests by swinging a scythe and bragging about its killing power. “I volunteer for haunted houses everywhere,” he says. “It has to do with the season.” Employees split patrons into small groups. One hands Connie a lantern and nods to go ahead. I hear another scream from the woods just as they start and it finally gets to me. I can’t venture it alone, so I pull in behind them. The teens embrace Connie as they walk, shuffling their feet in unison like a human centipede. The path is dark except for the lantern light. A few turns and scares later, a beast growls and claws at the girls. “I love you, momma,” Camiron says, adding a little whimper for effect. A character follows, re-

The girls relax and let go of each other to walk until Camiron steps on a tree branch. After an endless series of turns and screams, they reach a clearing and a man in a dress. “Do you like my mom’s dress?” the character asks. Co-owner Steve Hancock plays Ed Gein — with a chainsaw. Gein was a real-life mur-
derer who exhumed corpses and made trophies from human skin and bones. The girls fall to the ground, shrieking, and pull Connie down with them. Later, they claim the Gein character is the scariest of the haunt. After 16 minutes of thrills, we reach the end. “Let’s not do that again,” Camiron says. A little girl in stage makeup walks up to them, holding and petting a taxidermied cat. “Have you seen my mother?” she asks. Two other characters sneak up behind them for an extra spook. “That’s the scariest part,” Flo says. “You think it’s over but it’s not.”
‘Walking Dead’ meets ‘Modern Warfare’ Eris Smith, who is 7, plays the little girl with the cat. It’s her first night in character. Her sisters, Amethyst and Allura, play Red Riding Hood and an unnamed captive of the pig man.
Their father, Brian Smith, plays the pig man and Slender Man. “This is kind of family thing and it’s been a lot of fun,” says Kelly Smith, the girls’ mom. This year, the haunt introduced Final Fight, a laser tag battle that allows guests to shoot “zombies” to rescue potential victims. Co-owner Melissa Kennann said Final Fight has been wildly popular this season. Her husband, Travis Kennann, runs the attraction. Ryan and Nicole McClure of Lewisville are visiting the haunt for their third wedding anniversary. Ryan thinks the zombie shoot will be awesome. Nicole isn’t sure. “My heart rate is already at 130,” Nicole says as she grabs Ryan’s hand. “We get to get revenge on all of the people that scared us, so it will be OK,” Ryan says to his wife. The McClures and I chat as we wait in line for the zombie shoot. We form a three-person group so as not to feel alone.
Travis Kennann announces a five-minute delay because of an injury to one of the characters. “Who is injured, y’all or us?” Ryan says under his breath. Travis continues. “When you shoot them in the head, they go down. They will get up and become more aggressive,” he says. “Remember, you’ve got three minutes to complete the mission.” “So we can run?” Nicole asks. “I’d advise it,” he says. “Are these slow zombies, or fast zombies like Resident Evil zombies?” Nicole asks. “Do you feel like a rock star?” he responds. By 11:45 p.m., we save the bite victim and survive. “That was the coolest thing I’ve ever done,” Nicole says. Ryan and I agree. Final Fight was absolutely worth the wait. “The trail was a lot of fun, but this was better because it’s so interactive,” Ryan says. “And the fear was real.” ADAM SCHRADER can be reached at 214-773-8188 and via Twitter at @schrader_ adam.
