Peace train Pacifists mixing activism, music for Veterans Day

That’s the message from Denton community activists, war veterans, religious organizations and local artists who are coming together on Veterans Day to celebrate peaceful alternatives to war and militarism. The open-air music festival will begin with the People’s Peace Parade, starting at the corner of Fry and Hickory streets and ending at Denton’s downtown Square. The Nov. 11 event is organized by the University of North Texas Campus Antiwar Network. Garrett Graham, one of

the organizers, said he’s received more requests from local artists than can participate. “The response has been overwhelmingly positive,” he said. Acts scheduled to perform on the Square include the Jazz Dudes, Delphi, Demigods and Immigrant Punk. Speakers at the event will include Graham as well as some military veterans who have served in Afghanistan. “They are some of the most hurt by these wars, and their stories need to be heard,” Graham said. “For us, Veterans Day is about honoring those stories.” “Being against the wars is a pro-veteran position,” he added. “We support the troops and we want to bring them home safe.”

Donations will go to Under the Hood Cafe in Killeen, designed to be a place where soldiers can gather and speak freely about the wars and the military. Under the Hood also offers support services for soldiers, including referrals for counseling, legal advice and information on GI rights. “They are real heroes of ours,” Graham said. “They do a lot of good things for veterans.” The first Denton Peace Festival took place two years ago. Last March, the UNT Campus Antiwar Network sponsored a similar event called Funk the War, which

was part of a national movement of antiwar demonstrations. It’s back to being the Denton Peace Festival because “we wanted to make it more local,” Graham said. “This is about Denton in particular. Denton’s culture is really primed for this.” “Denton has many music festivals already, which is why our Peace Festival has been so warmly received,” Graham said. “However, we hope to add an extra layer of political awareness and activism to a Denton tradition of musical celebration.” — Ellen Ritscher Sackett

And so rather than make the set really heavy and realistic, we decided to go with an impressionistic, open, airy look.” He likens the set to remembering an old photograph as opposed to looking at one, leaving unfinished details — like pieces of a wall, a floating roofline or a bookcase with a

Most of the poignancy in the source material is suffocated by Perry’s sledgehammer approach that turns all women into martyrs and all men into beasts. Visually, Perry fails to free the material from its stagebound roots. Rated R, 133 minutes. — Todd Jorgenson Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould (###) Informative, straightforward documentary about the life of the eccentric Canadian pianist includes an abundance of archival footage and interviews with friends and acquaintances. The film is long and repetitive, but it provides insight for piano fans into Gould’s artistry and his impact on the classical music world. Poorly played ‘Game’ There’s nothing new in film about buildup to Iraq war nyone already familiar with the actual events behind Fair Game, a new political saga from director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity), might be divided between those who will either think the movie overly glamorizes its two main characters, Valerie Plame-Wilson (Naomi Watts) and her husband Joe Wilson (Sean Penn), and those thankful the movie exposes some of the lies behind the manufactured buildup to the 2003 Iraq war. And anyone not familiar with the actual events simply may no longer care about anything per-

taining to the prelude, a category that seems to include almost every movie made about the war. But, for those still tuned in, Liman has taken Jez and JohnHenry Butterworth’s screenplay, from the separate books of both Wilsons, and has rendered a fast-moving, often tense semithriller in which almost every event is already public knowledge. Plame-Wilson worked in the CIA for 18 years as an undercover operative. Wilson was a former U.S. ambassador as well as an expert in African affairs who went, for no fee, to Niger

after Sept. 11, 2001, but before the Iraq war, to investigate whether Iraq had bought huge quantities of bomb-making yellowcake uranium. About the time her husband reports back in the negative, Plame-Wilson and her cohorts in the CIA witness their own studies being cherry-picked by the administration to make a case for going to war. War begins and, when the hunt for weapons of mass destruction reveals nothing, Wilson invites the ire of the administration and its media allies by writing a newspaper opinion piece contradicting the claim that Iraq purchased uranium. Shortly after, Robert Novak names Plame-Wilson in his syndicated newspaper column as a CIA operative, ending her career, and throwing the Wilson family into crisis. Liman struggles to instill

names names in examining the recent financial crisis. He breaks down its causes, the events leading up to it and even tries to pin down the culprits. Little new is here, but it is good to see so much egregious

In addition to its politicsdriven narrative, Fair Game also reveals an ongoing war on truth and accuracy by politicians, as well as numerous culprits in the 24-hour news media. Should a war of ideas be won, as Wilson asks his wife when he raises his voice at her, by who can yell the loudest? Or should truth prevail, regardless of the size of the microphone? Fair Game uncovers and delivers nothing new, but at least it asks questions that seem to have helped divide the country.

othing about Bryan Rodecker screams hip-hop. Except for the tattoos, Rodecker could pass for a college kid marking time in

Denton before the time comes to take the stretchers out of his earlobes, stow the message T-shirts in the back of the closet and head out for the legitimate workforce.

But Rodecker is Infidelix, a Denton hip-hop solo artist and promoter — red hair, pale skin, easy conversation and all. When the average person thinks hip-hop, they think of the giants who corner the Top 40 market: Jay-Z, Eminem and Ludacris. The average person also thinks of the lesser emcees spun off the big dogs of hip-hop — Lil Wayne, T.I. For Rodecker and his comrades in Denton’s hip-hop scene, nothing is so offensive as the pre-fab hip-hop machine that churns out derivative poser after poser. “Anyone who isn’t going beyond FM radio to get their music just doesn’t know,” Rodecker said. “A lot of people don’t there is a difference between rap and hip-hop. And they don’t know there is something out there that is better that the garbage on the radio.” Rodecker breaks it down like this: Rap is a collection of verses, each one exaggerating the hypermasculine prowess of the rapper. At best, the verses are connected by hair’s-breadth tangents. “Hip-hop is storytelling,” he said. “The rhyme is there and the rhythm is there. The point is to tell a story, or to have some kind of a message. To do hiphop, you create music and write music. Sure, you might use someone else’s beats, but the song is yours and it comes from your life. Hip-hop is real. I don’t worry about the image part of it. I don’t talk about having money and women, because I don’t have all that.” There are parallels between Denton’s hip-hop scene and Denton’s pre-eminent indie music scene. Hip-hop musicians like to retain artistic control over their music, and they rely on the same kind of promotion indie artists have mastered. Pudge Brewer, a member of one of the city’s most wellrespected hip-hop purveyors,

Fab Deuce, said Denton’s emcees collaborate. “My favorite thing about hiphop is how it gets you involved with so many different people,” Brewer said. “You meet and work with all these different people, and you are part of this scene that comes from a whole lot of backgrounds. That makes you a stronger musician, working with other people. And we help each other make music.” As Infidelix, Rodecker has recorded with some rising and respected hip-hop artists, namely Lil Flip and Mac Lethal — Mac Lethal headlines at the gig Infidelix organized Friday night at Andy’s Bar. Rodecker reached out to some of the musicians he admires, and he found that popularity and credibility didn’t go to their heads. “I just e-mailed them, and they e-mailed me right back,” he said. “That’s crazy to me. But they’ve recorded with me, and I’ve brought them into Denton venues like Hailey’s. We’ve actually had some major people come through.” Rodecker credits Brewer and Fab Deuce for laying the foundation for the hip-hop scene. Fab Deuce got its start when Brewer graduated from Denton High School. The crew started making serious music in 2005, sharing the same creative soil that Vortexas grew out of. Brewer said Fab Deuce and Vortexas were tearing it up at house shows before they began playing area music venues. Rodecker grew up in the suburbs of Clear Lake, a stone’s throw away from NASA’s Johnson Space Center. He went to military school, thanks to discipline problems, and eventually landed in Denton to attend the University of North Texas. Rodecker said he was stuck in a

rut of ennui and listlessness. He was writing, but he wasn’t doing exactly what he wanted. “It came down to me being 25 and a college student and not knowing any of this equipment,” he said. Hanging out with other hiphop artists, going to shows and performing put him into an organic sort of music laboratory. He picked up technical knowhow, and started hustling to get hip-hop artists into Denton — including D12, Eminem’s crew. Brewer said regional and local clubs are sometimes leery of booking a hip-hop show. Americana and indie shows often draw listening audiences, rooms full of fans who stick to one spot, fold their arms and tune in to the act. Hip-hop is driven by percussion, and the “party vibe,” as Brewer calls it, can get a crowd rowdy. “Bookers are like: ‘What kind of crowd do you get?’ I’m never sure how to answer that, you know? I’m like: ‘Everyone,’” Brewer said. Rodecker said Denton’s hiphop scene draws a crowd of music fans. Frat guys, goth kids and hipsters show up at hiphop gigs. Much of that is likely thanks to Rodecker’s work promoting hip-hop in Denton and the region. “There are punk rock kids in Denton who love rock,” he said. “But they love our music and come to our shows. Hip-hop is a smaller community, and it is underground, but the weird thing is that there’s like a million people listening to the music. I can do a song, put it on the Web and there’ll be people

picking it up.” Rodecker’s debut album, The Daily Grind, has rock and hiphop influences. It also satisfies the Denton itch for a dash of pop culture politics. In “Gameshow Rappers,” Rodecker indicts the American Idol effect for cutting in the creative line, putting promising, telegenic teenagers who have marinated in the form enough to parrot it to a panel of well-connected judges. They clock a fat recording contract and a shot at tours hyped from here to Asia. Meanwhile, starving artists scrounge for available mics, writing, battling and giving their all for crowds that are sometimes both small and hostile. All of this experience sharpens Rodecker’s ambitions. The stuff that hurts is the stuff that feeds beats and poetry. Rodecker confesses a palate for pot in “Love Song for Mary Jane,” which sounds like something Tom Petty would have written while leaning against a high school urinal. Rodecker catalogs his favorite flavors, and laces infectious beats with clever lyrics and a metronomic sense of rhythm. Hip-hop is often criticized for its pro-drug lyrics and a penchant for casual sex, but then country music has enough odes to alcohol to qualify as product placement (“Straight Tequila Night” or “There’s a Tear in My Beer,” anyone?). Rodecker has an innate sense for the hook. He’s got a knack for introductions — the slow, burbling drag of air through a bong full of water leading into a chilled beat, a beastly growl diving into synth lines that aren’t too rough or too slick. He’s a self-professed “first-to-five-second listener.” “If you don’t get my attention in the first five seconds, you lose

me for good,” he said. “I make it my job to get my flow going right off the bat.” Infidelix is at his best, though, sharing a hot mic with Mac Lethal on “Rich Man,” which teases about stacks of cash and contraband. But when you listen closely, it’s the lyrical jackpot Infidelix wants to hit. And in “Stepping Up My Game” (featuring Lil Flip), Infidelix pledges to keep at it — writing, performing, fouling up if he has to. “Break Up Song” is a 21stcentury rant against a manipulative and off-balance lover. But even as Rodecker gives this ex the kiss-off, he owns up to his own part in the debacle. Brewer said there’s nothing like taking all that passion, rage and uncertainty and unleashing it on stage. “I work three jobs,” he said. “I work real hard. And I don’t mind that. I like that we do this show, and you get your mind off of all that. You don’t have to think about the stuff out there. The fans get to let go of all of it, too.” Rodecker likes the studio, but he said Infidelix is hottest on stage with just the mic, the audience and the moment. “I don’t want to say I do it for anyone,” Rodecker said. “If I want to write a song, I write it. I’m not trying to cater to their brain. I’m trying to get them to cater to my brain — not just now, but in 50 years.
