‘Best’ bet enton Community Theatre follows its comical look at the making of Gone With the Wind with an amusing story about ambitions of presidential proportions. So if you’re weary of the untempered electoral screed on social media, late playwright Gore Vidal’s play about politics might be the chaser you need for midterm election blues. Picture it: America, 1960. Director Brad Speck steers a cast of veterans through the play about a contender — a “likable, honest man” — who hopes to defeat the populist Southern senator Joseph Cantwell. Actor John Rodgers fills the bill as a self-professed ethical man, Secretary William Russell, who wants to leave Cantwell, played by Johnny Bryant, in the dust. Among other things, Russell says Cantwell is a bigot and a charlatan. But can he win the

Band merges Americana, ’80s dance

rin Elders said his Chicago-based band didn’t go into the studio with an elaborate plan for Desperate Glow, the full-length debut by Wedding Dress. “We definitely didn’t have anything planned out,” Elders said, speaking as the band drove toward Denton. “I mean, I had the core ideas planned out. As a musician, you can have everything planned out, or you can go into the studio and start building what you’re doing. For us, we recorded the acoustic skeleton and then started layering sounds on.” Desperate Glow is a record that Elders says reflects his two major musical influences: solid singer-songwriter stuff that poses big questions over minimal acoustic music, and then the 1980s post-punk dance music. “When I think about the songs I love to write — these Leonard Cohen acoustic songs, these dirges — and then there’s this other side of me that needs to do this ’80s dance music,” Elders said. “I’ll be writing them, and then I realize that, hey, that was Echo and the Bunnymen guitar part, or, hey, this is like a Talking Heads song.” The merger between the reticent, synth-power British electronic music and the straightforward and poetic Americana gives Desperate Glow a confessional sort of posture, lyrics moved along by quiet acoustic guitar of grand loops of spacedout keyboard work. There’s an undercurrent of symphonic layers of unfolding sound, but underscored often by unexpected rhythms that are somehow more jazz-oriented than shopping power chords or steady strumming. “I want us as a band to take risks,” Elders said. “I’ve always

been really rhythmically oriented.” One risk Elders embraced was making use of his thin but assured falsetto on select tracks. “I think singing in falsetto, there’s a balance to it,” Elders said. “Now, this is probably my neuroses, but when you’re singing, sometimes you do things to mask your voice in this affected way. I really love guys who sing in a really low voice. I want to sing like that, but I can’t. I just

have to go into falsetto to do it. I don’t do it all the time in every song, but sometimes I’ll get this feeling like I just wasn’t stepping up enough for the chorus. So to bring something more to it, I’ll hit that falsetto. “It’s a weird balance. The power of singing like that is knowing when to back off from it, though.” Desperate Glow was recorded in a friend’s home studio (“During the day, I’d break into my friend’s home studio and work away while he was at work”) and finished in another indie-type studio. Desperate Glow drops Nov. 18, less than two weeks from Wedding Dress’ Denton date. Elders said Wedding Dress is
a group that keeps its field wide and its expectations low when recording. “I think for us the key is to not overthink it while we’re working,” he said. “The only thing that matters is making music that you can emotionally connect to. It’s not that we just put down a track and we’re done with it. That’s not what I mean. But when you get to a point that there’s nothing else you can do that really adds to the song, then it’s time.” Wedding Dress is touring with its new, expanded lineup. What started as a side project of Elders, whose primary project is Maps & Atlases, eventually recruited Mike Russell and Matt Lemke of Suns, Bobby Burg of Love of Everything
and Joan of Arc, and Gypsyblood’s Christian Dawson. The road will give the musicians an opportunity to grow into the album, Elders said. “In a way, we are reinterpreting them,” Elders said. “We’re rearranging the songs for live performances, which means sometimes saying, ‘Hey, we should have recorded it like this!’ But that speaks to the many lives of songs. A lot of times, though, you have to play a song differently than it’s recorded. That’s happened with a track, ‘Somewhere Darker.’ It’s a dark, minimal song, and it really wasn’t working — and we are just having to figure out what it’ll sound like live.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877.

Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway play astronauts in search of a new world in “Interstellar.”
Fanciful journey By Boo Allen Film Critic booa@att.net
No matter how long you’re gone, you can always go home again. And in writer-director Christopher Nolan’s new space adventure Interstellar, you’re gone a long, long time. But it’s not a protest against Thomas Wolfe’s advice about not returning home that rings loudest in the flashy new science-fiction saga. Instead, the film’s mantra comes from Dylan Thomas’ lines, often repeated in the film, about raging against the dying of the light, a resistance taken by planet Earth when it comes to grips that its lights are dimming and its energy slipping away.
Interstellar Rated PG-13, 169 minutes. Opens Friday.
The script from Nolan and his brother Jonathan initially attribute the world’s woes to a population “wanting it all,” but doing little to conserve. They abandon their warnings long enough to establish their main premise of a hidden branch of NASA, headed by Professor Brand (Michael Caine). The secret division has been working underground to save Earth with a planned, otherworldly mission. Matthew McConaughey, in
full serious-actor mode, plays Cooper, the reluctant recruit who is to head of a crew of four astronauts who are determined not to go gentle into that good night. They head toward the outer limits of space looking for a wormhole, a slip in the dreaded space-time continuum where they might find another world — a new planet that humans may someday call home. This fantastic voyage lends itself to what looks like Nolan’s attempt to make this generation’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. And at times, the effects dutifully dazzle, with an array of blinding colors and rapidly moving images made more impressive on the engulfing Imax screen. Earth’s dust storms and a foreign plan-
Actors transcend nonsensical plot in Nolan’s galactic epic et’s tidal waves represent an apex of effects in service to the story. But when Interstellar attempts to explain what all is going on and why, the spaceship enters a black hole. Cooper spends what seems like hours spouting pseudo-scientific gibberish to fellow astronaut Amelia (Anne Hathaway). When not trying to justify or explain itself, Interstellar throws in some third-act surprises and plot twists that result in Cooper and crew spending decades in space — all without aging or messing up their hair or makeup. While the chatter takes over in hopes of injecting some faux gravitas, director Nolan repeatedly returns to his home-again theme with glimpses of Cooper’s
aging family, including daughter Murph (played in her adult years by Jessica Chastain). This anomaly makes sense only in context of the confusing narrative. Clocking in at nearly three hours, Interstellar gives its cast lots of time to perform. The running time even allows for an impressive supporting cast, including an unbilled surprise. But it’s the hardware and not the humans that will draw hordes to Instellar. And for that, it remains impressive. COVER STORY
Love conquers greed Operetta at UNT weighs taxation against the heart By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor cbreeding@dentonrc.com
niversity of North Texas Opera Theatre had a clever plan for the second opera for its 2014-15 season. It follows up the rancorous midterm elections with a trifle about an ambassador who tries to play Match.com to a wealthy widow whose money bags could enrich his country’s with wellplaced tax relief. The company continues its season with what music director Stephen Dubberly considers a smart, close English translation of The Merry Widow, an operetta by Austrian-Hungarian composer Franz Lehar. Dubberly said the translation maintains the comedy and the soulfulness of the love story, originally written in German. Set in Paris, the operetta (which is a bit like a musical, with parts that are both sung and spoken) is about wealthy widow Hanna from the fictional country of Pontevedro who has loved countryman Count Danilo for many years. Hanna refuses to marry Danilo until he professes his love to her. The Pontevedrian ambassador tries to manipulate Danilo into marrying Hanna, afraid that if she marries a foreign national, she will take her sizable tax payments elsewhere. The ambassador can’t fathom the idea of Hanna happily wed while his bankrupt country suffers. The crux of the conflict is Danilo’s true love for Hanna. He refuses to marry her for her wealth. The opera has other plots, too. Baron Zeta, already finagling Hanna’s ample bank account, must finesse things at home, too. Count Camille, the
