Tonight’s program, sponsored in part by the UNT Fine Art Series, will include Rachmaninoff’s Six Songs, Op. 38, as well as works by Tchaikovsky and Puccini. Tickets cost $20 for the general public. A real, live boy

Students in theater school bring to life the tale of Pinocchio

D

enton Community Theatre’s Theatre School presents Pinocchio Commedia, a play for children and young people by Johnny Simons, this weekend at the Campus Theatre. The comedy is told in the style of commedia dell’arte, an Italian Renaissance form that presents a tale told by stock characters in a traveling band of performers: harlequin, ingenue, juvenile and villain. Directed by retired Denton public school theater teacher John Evarts, the show is especially good for children given the commedia’s physical comedy, witty lines and physical storytelling. The story retells Carlo Collodi’s famous story of Pinocchio, in which a marionette puppet longs to become a real boy so that he might be cherished by Geppetto, the elderly woodcarver who created him. The theater school uses brightly colored costumes and handmade Italian masks on the young actors performing the play. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Campus Theatre, 214 W. Hickory St. Tickets cost $6. For reservations, call 940-382-1915.

Baton Rouge’s England in 1819 plays the basement of J&J’s Pizza on Tuesday night.

Southern symphonic Louisiana family band makes tunes to charm Faulkner

I

ndie chamber rock is an apt tag to describe Baton Rouge, La., family outfit England in 1819. The trio — dad Liam Callaway and sons Dan and Andrew — simplify baroque phrasing down to bare indiestyle picking and keyboard and lay down vocals that are ever so muted. The effect is a hookup between indie rock and ambient music that suggests meaning through sound more than lyrics. After releasing the band’s second album, Alma (which is a woman’s name and the Spanish word for soul, for you Tennessee Williams geeks),

TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend

England in 1819 has spent much of 2012 touring small rooms through the South, Midwest and East Coast. Now the band comes to Denton on Tuesday to play the Old Dirty Basement at J&J’s Pizza on the Square. It’ll be a good space to hear the family affair trot out conservatory training — composing for Andrew, French horn for Dan — translated through careful music that has no bombast, but thankfully skips the indulgent self-awareness that plagues many an indie startup. Liam Callaway brings the chops of a tavern musician to the trio. He was the son of a Southern gentleman and traveling musician, and inherited the trade himself. Together,

father and sons produce songs that are sweet to the ears and tempting for the soul. The band has plans to release an EP in early 2013. Sounds like: Robert Gomez (Gomez and England in 1819 share a publicist, Team Clermont), Burt Bacharach and Team Tomb wrote some songs after a Saturday afternoon screening of Leaving Los Vegas. Craving and hunger are key parts of the human condition, and sometimes, the best way to express it is to build a keening guitar crescendo over a sad piano. Details: England in 1819 plays at 9 p.m. Tuesday at J&J’s, 118 W. Oak St. The band shares the stage with local band the Treelines. Cover is to be determined. — Lucinda Breeding JX

TWU transports audience to Donegal for ‘Dancing at Lughnasa’

n a small house in 1936 Donegal, the five unmarried Mundy sisters are getting by. Kate, Maggie, Agnes, Rose and Chris occasionally clash, but for the most part, they try to nourish the family and bring up young Michael, the son born to Chris out of wedlock, to fit right into the clan. Texas Woman’s University presents Dancing at Lughnasa,

a touching drama by Brian Friel. The play is the study of this Irish family’s dynamics just as they’re tipped from their balance by the arrival of two men: a missionary uncle, who has allowed his work in Africa to enlarge his spirituality, and Michael’s father. Professor emerita Sharon Benge directs the production. The cast includes Desiree Fultz,

Averie Bell, Heather Alverson, Claire Watson, Kristi Smith, Paul Engle, Seth Johnston and Colton Jones. University of North Texas scenic designer Ken Verdugo provides the set design. Frontman James Murphy decided to disband the group, which broke up at the peak of its popularity. Murphy, shown here setting up for the concert, considered the final show the biggest and most ambitious concert of the band’s career. OPENING FRIDAY

Cafe de Flore (##) Two supposedly parallel stories unfold at once in this French-Canadian muddle. A mother (Vanessa Paradis) in late 1960s Paris takes care of her preteen son with Down syndrome. Forty years later in Quebec, a recently divorced disc jockey struggles with his family and his new life. Somehow the two stories are meant to interconnect. Diffuse and uninvolving with little apparent insight. Not rated, 120 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen Lincoln (####) This is more a wonky, nuts-and-bolts lesson about the way political machinery operates than a sweeping historical epic that tries to encapsulate the entirety of the revered 16th president’s life. That was a smart move on the part of Steven Spielberg and Pulitzer-winning screenwriter Tony Kushner. Talky and intimate but also surprisingly funny, Lincoln focuses on the final four months of Abraham Lincoln’s life, and Daniel Day-Lewis

inhabits the role fully. With Tommy Lee Jones, James Spader, John Hawkes and David Strathairn. Rated PG-13, 150 minutes. In regional theaters. — The Associated Press

Play it again, boys

NOW PLAYING Argo (###1/2) Ben Affleck directed and takes the lead role in this true story of a CIA operative who goes to Iran in 1980 posing as the producer of a bogus science-fiction film in order to extract six Americans hiding in the home of the Canadian ambassador. Abundant dark humor smoothly combines with frightening sequences and ample action. With an excellent supporting cast, including John Goodman, Alan Arkin, Clea DuVall and Tate Donovan. Rated R, 120 minutes. — B.A. Cloud Atlas (##) Cloud Atlas comes from the best-selling novel by David Mitchell that, in theory, might have seemed unfilmable, encompassing six stories over a span of 500 years and including some primitive dialogue in a far-away future. The A-list actors who comprise the cast (including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon, Hugh Grant, Jim Broadbent) play multiple parts across the various stories and in elaborate makeup that’s often laughable. Rated R, 172 minutes. — AP Flight (####) Robert Zemeckis’ first live-action film since 2000’s Cast Away is thrilling, engrossing and even darkly funny at times. It’s anchored by a tremendous performance from Denzel Washington as Whip Whitaker, a veteran airline pilot and serious alcoholic. Major mechan-

The iconic rock band saw the film Celebration Day, a concert film of the band’s 2007 London O2 reunion show, released last month in a one-time-only cinema showing. ical failure on a flight to Atlanta forces him to pull off a daring crash landing, and he’s hailed as a hero for saving so many lives. But the subsequent federal investigation also reveals his rampant substance abuse, which only fortifies his denial. Don Cheadle, Bruce Greenwood and John Goodman all give strong supporting

performances as the people around Whip who keep him functioning in various ways. But Zemeckis tends to lay on a heavy-handed tone that keeps this from being a great film. Rated R, 135 minutes. — AP Here Comes the Boom (##1/2) This comedy, with Kevin James as a tubby high school science teacher who

becomes a mixed martial arts sensation, is every bit as ridiculous as it looks. That’s not such a bad thing for the movie, whose makers embrace the fact that they’re essentially doing a live-action cartoon. Rated PG, 104 minutes. — AP

James Bond (Daniel Craig, left) faces the nefarious Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem) in Skyfall. Sony Pictures

Bond matures By Boo Allen Film Critic

The past comes back to haunt James Bond in Skyfall, the 23rd entry in moviedom’s most successful franchise. Daniel Craig returns for the third time as 007, Her Majesty’s secret agent who now feels his age catching up with his increasingly fragile body. Skyfall marks a departure for formulaic Bond films. This one is more talky, with less action, and more prone to selfanalysis — not what you would expect from the infamous ladies’ man with a license to kill. Although Skyfall might not be a typical Bond action-

adventure, it is a better movie for its bold venture into new territory. But the film also represents how, in general, Bond films have progressed to becoming recognized as quality works and not just cheesy action flicks. This upgrade of the Bond films can be found in the A-list cast of fresh faces, from the young (Ben Whishaw as the new Q) to the old (Albert

Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu. Co-written by Eli Roth. Rated R, 96 minutes. Finney as a Bond family retainer) to the in-between (Ralph Fiennes as a government bureaucrat who looks slated to return in future Bond films). In addition, Judi Dench returns as M, and Javier Bardem makes a chilling blond villain. Sam Mendes, who’s not known for action films, directed Skyfall, bringing his expertise for handling actors and dialogue to the story and script from three prominent scribes, Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan. Cinematographer Roger Deakins, the best at his craft, provided the crisp and perfectly composed photography. And, not to overload the superlatives,

but the opening credit sequence, always a Bond attribute, is the most creative seen this year. The story itself revolves around Britain’s foreign service, MI6, coming under attack by an unknown assailant. The perpetrator seems to hold a grudge against M, levying a series of disasters aimed to embarrass her while killing scores of people and causing immense damage. After an opening sequence in which it looks like Bond has died (fat chance), he returns to duty, a little more disheveled and perhaps drinking too much. He eventually finds and apprehends the bad guy, Silva (Bardem), a garrulous ex-

(Broadway’s Avenue Q) and writer Kay Cannon (30 Rock), based on the nonfiction book by Mickey Rapkin, feels like a mash-up of Glee and Revenge of the Nerds. Starring Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson and Hana Mae Lee. Rated PG-13, 112 minutes. — AP Wreck-It Ralph Disney’s new ani-

mated film mixes retro eye-candy for grown-ups and a thrilling, approachable storyline for the tykes. Shorttempered, sledgehammer-fisted bad guy Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly) is a reluctant villain and is ready for a change. Traveling through the arcade's power cords and surge protectors, Ralph journeys to Game

agent-turned-criminal-mastermind who seems more in the vein of earlier, more reflective Bond bad guys, like Dr. No or Blofeld. But Silva’s capture only brings about more trademark Bond diversions: chases, face-offs, explosions and, of course, beautiful women. But director Mendes detours long enough to go retro, bringing out Bond’s shelved Aston Martin and returning to the Bond ancestral home in Scotland, Skyfall. During it all, Bond and M indulge in enough soulsearching conversations to create a real personal drama, and that alone might make this a different and, in some ways, better Bond film.

Central Station, the gateway to every game in the store, to prove he can be a hero. Director Rich Moore (The Simpsons) ably manipulates the action by tantalizingly shifting the characters between game worlds. With Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch and Sarah Silverman Rated PG, 93 minutes. — The Hollywood Reporter

Jazz Dream could be a once-ina-lifetime chance for University of North Texas theater students. Even those students who make a career in theater might not get a chance to be part of a world-premiere musical, and freelance director Maggie L. Harrer is holding the student performers to a professional standard in the project. “I told the students that I needed them to be available to me, even if they weren’t called for a rehearsal,” Harrer said. “I explained that I’ve given myself to this project 100 percent for these seven weeks, and if I need them to be

here, they have to be here.” A Jazz Dream, The Musical is inspired by one of William Shakespeare’s most popular plays, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Harrer Harrer recruited UNT English professor and Shakespeare scholar Kevin Curran to serve as dramaturge, the editor who cuts the play and arranges it for the cast and crew. Then, Harrer invited UNT music professor and sought-after jazz composer and arranger Richard DeRosa to lead graduate students in arranging late

19th- and early 20thcentury jazz songs. DeRosa also led graduate students to compose music for transitions and atmosphere. Theater and dance students perform the DeRosa show. Harrer said she had long wanted to adapt the Shakespearean comedy to a musical, and was thrilled to find out just how much jazz talent and skill was on the campus when she was invited to build the show. “I had no idea about the jazz program here when I first agreed to do the proj-

ect,” Harrer said. “It was like destiny, really. It was like this was fated for us to come together.” The premiere is a few steps further than what artists refer to as a “workshop show.” At the workshop stage, a project might not have a script, characters or even a fully formed story. Often, producers will use the workshop to hammer out the story, script and characters out — only to revise the show heavily. their celebrations when they drug the Athenians’ hormonal teenage children. When the magical world and municipality collide, hilarity ensues and love busts out all over. The director said the students have been privy to the nuts and bolts of building a show. “They get to see us work things out,” Harrer said. “They get to see how the discussions go to get things done.” Bob Lavallee, the guest artist brought aboard to design the set for the show, said he prepared to present a “master class” to technical theater students. “That has Lavallee been part of it,” he said. “They’re not only participating in this show as it unfolds into this whole show, but some of them have been part of these discussions on a more detailed level.” Student crew members, faculty and guest artists met during Monday evening production meetings, when faculty designers would report on their designs for lighting, costumes, stagecraft and everything in between. Production meetings are part of professional theater. “We meet for an hour, and it’s a full hour,” Harrer said. “Solving countless problems is part of the job.” Harrer said she was happy to bring in radio, television and film students charged with making a promotional video

UNT senior Austin Struckmeyer, who is pursuing a double major in music and theater, plays dual roles of Theseus — king of Athens in the original play and a Wall Street giant in this adaptation — and Oberon — king of the fairies in the original play and a traveling street magician in the adaptation. Harrer has set the story in New York City, where the barons of Wall Street are up against Occupy Wall Street protesters and street artists. “The adaptation into modern times makes it very easy to relate to,” Struckmeyer said before the show opened. “The beauty of Shakespeare is that the things he wrote about are universal and have endured for the last several hundred years, and the particular perspective we are taking in this show is very topical and very relevant, particularly with the … election and political strife.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877.
