Beaujolais and More, a wine and food tasting fundraiser, will raise money for the Campus Theatre on Nov. 18.

enton residents can join wine lovers all over the world in tasting the latest Beaujolais Nouveau, a light red wine flown in from France to celebrations on the third Thursday in November. Denton’s Beaujolais and More — billed as the biggest party in town — raises funds for the Campus Theatre. Unlike wines that improve with age, Beaujolais Nouveau has a short shelf-life and is meant to be consumed immediately. The vintages vary from year to year, and better vintages can last well into the next, but those who wait to consume the Beaujolais would then miss all the hype. Sandra Robinson, committee chairwoman for this year’s event, said Metzler’s and Vigne will furnish the Beaujolais in addition to other wines. Twenty-two area restaurants will be providing light fare for the event, which raises thousands of dollars to help provide the upkeep and maintenance for the Campus Theatre throughout the year. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase tickets for prize drawings. Some of the items donated to the cause include a wine refrigerator, two wine baskets, a wine backpack with accessories, Music Theatre of Denton season tickets, Denton Community Theatre season tickets, a gift certificate from Cellar 22 and a pair of Dallas Stars hockey tickets. “Being the only fundraiser

TO GET LISTED for the Campus, it’s a very important event,” Robinson said. For instance, in the past year, the building has accumulated a lot of expenses related to the air-conditioning and heating system, she said. She added that funds raised through Beaujolais and More will not go toward the Denton Community Theatre’s new black box theater, whose fundraising efforts are separate from that of the Campus Theatre. “Everyone will have a good time,” said Robinson, who expects at least 300 people to attend. Little-known legend Touring musician’s songs draw from a rich imagination By Tim Monzingo Staff Writer

When Jacob Smith adopted his pseudonym, the White Buffalo, he wasn’t aware of the Brule Sioux legend. “My given name is Jacob Smith, which isn’t terribly mystical, so some friends thought I might need a stage name or something, so they all threw names in a hat and the White Buffalo was in there, he said. “I just kind of took it on. The tribe’s myth goes that a woman dressed in white buckskin floated up to two hunters as they looked for food in a game-starved country. When one man tried to touch the holy woman inappropriately, he was destroyed. The other

she told to return to camp and make ready for her arrival. Denton should make ready for Smith’s show at the Hydrant Cafe on Tuesday. In a rich, deep baritone akin to Eddie Vedder’s, the modern White Buffalo tells stories that roam listlessly across the plains of the human experience. Smith didn’t know about the magic of the legendary white buffalo, but the legend and the musician are compatible. The Brule Sioux legend holds that after teaching the people certain religious rites, the woman in the white buckskin left the camp. On the way out, she stopped and rolled over four times. The first time, she turned into a black buffalo. The second

time, a brown buffalo. The third time, she was a red buffalo, and with her final roll, she became a white female buffalo calf. Then she vanished and herds of buffalo appeared, and the people never wanted for food. Like the woman of the legend, Smith’s songs seamlessly move between forms. From murder and heartbreak to love and joy, the White Buffalo’s songs conjure up universal themes. OPENING FRIDAY

Around a Small Mountain (## 1/2) Former New Waver and French icon Jacques Rivette directed this oblique tale of a mysterious Italian man who befriends the members of a small traveling circus in southern France. He inveigles himself into the group before eventually exposing some longheld secrets among the members. Rivette delivers his standard long takes and measured pace to paint his interwoven portrait. Not rated, 84 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen Cool It (##1/2) Mildly thought-provoking documentary that follows Bjorn Lomborg, a Danish author whose book The Skeptical Environmentalist gives an alternative view of the climate change issue, that global warming is a reality but is too high on our list of priorities when education and humanitarian issues should take precedence. Lomborg offers some intriguing viewpoints, especially on kneejerk politicians from both sides, but the film too often seems like a selfpromotional tool. Rated PG, 88 minutes. At the Magnolia. — Todd Jorgenson Last Train Home (###1/2) This fascinating documentary focuses in general on China's 130 million migrant workers who flood trains when returning to their rural homes once a year on the Chinese New Year. In particular, director Lixin Fan examines the depressing life of a couple who had come to work in a big city factory, leaving their now estranged children to be raised by a grandmother. Not rated, 85 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — B.A. 127 Hours (###1/2) Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) again shows his versatility with this harrowing true-life adventure tale about Aron Ralston (James Franco), a hiker who slipped in a narrow Utah canyon, becoming immobile when his arm was wedged between rocks. As his provisions run low and survival hopes turn slim, he becomes desperate. Franco is terrific, while Boyle manages to bring suspense and high drama to a story with only one human character. Rated R, 93 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — T.J. Skyline Jarrod (Eric Balfour) and Elaine (Scottie Thompson) take a trip

‘Glory’ all her own

McAdams carries old story with her fresh performance

By Boo Allen

elevates the pompous Dan Rather-like news icon Mike Pomeroy (Ford) to reluctant co-host. But, partly because of his lucrative contract, Pomeroy merely sits there scowling, refusing (to his credit) to play along with the endless inane fluff that makes up morning television. Of course, this makes everyone on the morning “team” hate him, including his narcissistic co-host Colleen (Keaton). Becky decides to go rogue and takes the show into audience-share-grabbing morning craziness, with weatherman Ernie (Matt Malloy) delivering a series of hilarious on-thestreet sequences. Her and her crew’s jobs look saved, but Pomeroy stands aloof. At that point, Morning Glory devolves into Becky wheedling,

cajoling and whining, all while in the middle of the hurricane that makes up her life. She receives painful signals that warn her of the perils of living such a life — she might end up lonely, jaded and bitter, like Mike Pomeroy. In all, the transparent story serves as springboard for clumsy messages and a large amount of obvious humor, using Pomeroy’s cantankerousness for material. But the story also allows McAdams to turn in a spirited screwball comedy performance reminiscent of the best of Carole Lombard, or, later, a young Diane Keaton. Beneath the fluff of a story about other fluffiness, McAdams’ smart turn glimmers. DR. BOO ALLEN is an award-winning film critic for the Denton Record-Chronicle.

Morning Glory

orning Glory breathes new life into an old convention by telling the story of someone who breathes new life into an old convention. It also helps that the one doing most of this breathing is a likable, talented actor acutely fitted to her role. Roger Michell (Notting Hill, Venus) again exhibits his talent for squeezing the most out of routine material, here the script by Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada). The story of combative television co-anchors could qualify for Medicare, and the basic narrative about a struggle to raise ratings is not exactly high drama. But Michell also elevates his material by reinforcing his

knack for somehow persuading his on-screen talent into looking bad, because at some point in Morning Glory, everyone takes a fall or two. Rachel McAdams qualifies as the pratfall standout, grabbing the spotlight away from high-profile co-stars Diane Keaton and Harrison Ford. McAdams plays Becky, a hard-working morning show producer who lands in New York at a last-place network with a morning show barely registering a pulse. She quickly fires one smarmy host and then

to Southern California to visit his friend, Terry (Donald Faison), but what is supposed to be a fun getaway turns into a weekend of terror. During the night, a cluster of strange, mesmerizing lights signals the arrival of a malevolent alien invasion. Rated PG-13, 94 minutes. Beachside bidding Guild hangs hopes on ‘Hang 10’ to benefit local arts By Ellen Ritscher Sackett Staff Writer

Not quite ready for summer to be over? Go ahead, be a beach bum for a night. Grab your towel and head for the Center for the Visual Arts, which will be transformed this Saturday into a ’50s- and ’60sera beach scene — complete with grass-hut snack shacks, surfboards and sand castle

AUCTION FOR THE ARTS What: “Hang Ten in 2010,” The Arts Guild of the Greater Denton Arts Council’s annual auction benefiting member arts organizations When: Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, and the silent auction begins. The live auction begins at 8:30 p.m. Where: Center for the Visual Arts, 400 E. Hickory St. Details: Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the door, or $25 for Arts Guild members. Includes wine, beer, hors d’oeuvres and desserts. For reservations, call Judy Shortino at 214-435-5395.

table centerpieces. The occasion? The Arts Guild’s annual fundraiser. This year, the theme is “Hang Ten in 2010.” The Arts Guild — or TAG, as

it’s commonly called — is “the money-making arm of the Greater Denton Arts Council,” said Sandra Robinson, the guild’s president. “Money raised at our Annual

Auction for the Arts goes to local nonprofit arts groups for a wide variety of arts programs,” she said. The benefit event relies on a large group of volunteers and contributions from local businesses and area residents. “Without them, this auction would not be possible,” Robinson said. Guild President-elect Rita Burleson is in charge of decorating — a big responsibility she called “the linchpin,” because it telegraphs the fundraiser’s theme to the community with the intent to draw

people to the event. Burleson said executing the surfing theme has been “a lot of fun” but also a challenge because many of the beach props easiest to obtain were in the Hawaiian style. But that wasn’t what the steering committee was after. “We wanted more of the California, Huntington Beach, Surf City USA kind of look, so that’s what we’re creating,” she said, “like Frankie and Annette and Beach Blanket Bingo.” “I really focused on surf boards,” Burleson said. There will be plenty of them scattered

throughout the Center for the Visual Arts, including some custom-designed by Mike Strecher, the Campus Theatre’s technical director. The decor will also include plenty of flip-flops, a beach front, beach balls, beach bags and beach blankets, sun hats, deck chairs, fish nets, an old transistor radio and faux sand made of bread crumbs — all of which “creates the ambience,” Burleson said. She made a smiling, bright yellow, cartoonish sun wearing shades to hang above the live auction merchandise. These high-value donations include vacation packages, fine jewelry, tickets to sporting events and catered meals. Bidders also have many chances to win a range of items at the silent auction, which will take place in the Meador Gallery, renamed “Surfboard Park” for the evening. The silent auction will start when the doors open and will close after the live auction ends. The silent auction provides a chance to do some holiday shopping and potentially pick up deals on goods and services that residents purchase regu-

‘HANG TEN’ TASTES Food and drink providers include Applebee’s, Beth Marie’s Old-Fashioned Ice Cream and Soda Fountain, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Cupboard Natural Foods and Cafe, Extreme Cuisine Catering, Fremaux’s Metropolitan Catering, Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, The Greenhouse, Paradise Liquor, Rooster’s Roadhouse, Round Belly Cafe and Catering, Ruby’s Diner on the Square and Sonic.

larly in addition to supporting the arts in Denton. Hundreds of items and services have been donated for the silent auction, such as a one-ofa-kind antique child’s rocking chair, lots of original art, handmade jewelry, quilts, a variety of gift baskets, Brighton jewelry and sunglasses, and wine. Gift certificates are up for grabs for car maintenance, flower arrangements, veterinary services, dry cleaning, personal care services, piano tuning, and tickets to a variety of music and arts events. A handmade bowl by Robert

Milnes, dean of the University of North Texas College of Visual Arts and Design, is featured in the silent auction as well as a basket of Capitol ornaments, donated by Sen. Jane Nelson. The Beach Book Nook is a room off Festival Hall. Here, bidders will find donated books, both new and old. Burleson said many of these are children’s books or rare finds. People spend a lot of time perusing the books, she said. Some bid on items to take home; others bid on books that they then donate to area libraries. Not only will there be plenty to bid on, there will also be plenty to eat. Numerous area restaurants are providing good eats for the occasion. It’s “kind of like a food fair. You wander around and get what you want,” Burleson said. Beyond the festivities, the evening has long-lasting value. “Last year’s auction netted $45,000 for grants,” said Margaret Edge Chalfant, executive director of the Greater Denton Arts Council. “Our specific grants go to our member organizations, and many of them go for gen-

eral, operational funding for a season,” she said. Some of the groups that received grants for seasonal support include the Denton Bach Society, the Denton Bell Band, Denton Community Band, Denton Community Chorus, Denton Community Theatre, Music Theatre of Denton and the Visual Arts Society of Texas. Other grants go for specific projects, Chalfant said. For example, the Denton Black Chamber of Commerce received grant assistance for the Denton Blues Festival, the Denton Festival Foundation Inc. received a grant for the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival, and Texas Filmmakers received funds to help produce the Thin Line Film Festival. “There’s a trickle-down from the grants,” Burleson said. “It’s not only funding arts grants to further the arts programs in this community, it is also growing the arts throughout the community” through exposure, she said. “That’s what’s exciting about the arts in Denton.” ELLEN RITSCHER SACKETT can be reached at 940-566-6845.
