he University of North Texas Wind Symphony will present one of the few American live performances of Sergei Prokofiev’s Ode to the End of War at 7:30 p.m. today in the Murchison Performing Arts Center. The Wind Symphony is under the direction of Eugene Migliaro Corporon, regents professor of music. Prokofiev’s Ode to the End of War, written in 1945, calls for an exceptional ensemble — eight harps and four grand pianos in addition to the wind symphony. “I know of no other wind band pieces with this many harps, as well as original parts for saxophone, which is highly original in orchestral writing,” Corporon said in a news release. “While saxophones were standard in a wind band in 1945, the inclusion of saxophone parts in a Prokofiev work is unique. This is a very rare performance of Ode to the End of War, one of only a few that have happened in the United States. It’s not something you see every day, and UNT’s College of Music is in a unique position of having the

Be there tonight when Denton Community Theatre uncorks the city’s first batch of Beaujolais Nouveau — a wine that isn’t famous for being “fine” in the gourmet sense, but for being fun. The vintage is the first crush of France’s Beaujolais wine country.

First crush D

enton Community Theatre will present the annual Beaujolais & More wine tasting at 5:30 p.m. today at the Denton Civic Center, 321 E. McKinney St. Each fall, the wine tasting celebrates the first crush of the Beaujolais wine region in France. The unboxing of Beaujolais Nouveau bottles is celebrated on the third Thursday of November. The wine is a fruity, light red wine meant to be drunk young.

(Beaujolais Nouveau doesn’t get better with age — it just tastes “off” if it sits too long, according to sommeliers.) Beaujolais Nouveau parties are held around the globe to celebrate the flavors and joy the later harvests will bring. In Denton, patrons celebrate the wine tonight along with goodies dished up by more than 20 area restaurants. Beaujolais & More is the only fundraiser for the his-

Fusing right into the band Mike Stern joins UNT’s One O’clock for fall concert

M

ike Stern isn’t a showoff when the moment for improvisation hits the sixtime Grammy nominee and jazz fusion guitarist. Instead, he just lets his skilled fingers do the walking, improvising sensible, earcharming phrasing in the style called for — whether it’s the groovy pop of Blood, Sweat and Tears or the attitude of rock ’n’ roll in a straightforward song of his own making. Stern will join the University of North Texas’ One O’clock Lab Band at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Winspear Hall at the Murchison Performing Arts Center. “Mike is simply one of the most renowned modern jazz guitarists on the planet, coming to the public’s attention

with the great Miles Davis bands of the 1980s and then pursuing a wonderful career as a leader and solo artist,” band director Steve Wiest said in a news release. “I’m looking forward as always to showcasing the music of the six-time Grammy-nominated One O’clock Lab Band on the first set with new music of our own as well as some classics. The second set will be all Mike Stern charts and will no doubt be an exciting show for all involved.” The fall concert is the lab band’s 52nd, and tickets tend to sell briskly. Chris Koehl, a former contestant on Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance, will lead a hiphop master class from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Denton Dance Conservatory. Bella, ‘Twilight’ series come into their own for final chapter

By Christy Lemire AP Movie Critic

Finally — finally! — the Twilight franchise embraces its own innate absurdity with the gleefully over-the-top conclusion, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2. This is by far the best film in the series. This does not necessarily mean it’s good. But as it reaches its prolonged and wildly violent crescendo, it’s at least entertaining in a totally nutso way. The first four adaptations of Stephenie Meyer’s mega-best sellers about the girl-vampirewerewolf love triangle (the final book was divided into two films for maximum box-office benefit) were, for the most part, laughably self-serious affairs full of mopey teen angst, stilted dialogue and cheesy special effects. Now, Bill Condon (who also directed last year’s Breaking Dawn — Part 1) finally lets his freak flag fly. Here is the Condon of Gods and Monsters, the one who loves lurid horror. Here is the Condon of Dreamgirls, the one with an eye for panache. His final Twilight movie dares to have a little fun — it actually makes you laugh intentionally for once, teetering on self-parody as it does. There have been teasers about a bold plot twist — and we wouldn’t dream of spoiling it here — but Condon and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg have taken a big risk in deviating from the book, and it pays off big-time from a narrative perspective. It’s kind of amazing that this thing got a PG-13 rating. First, though, Breaking Dawn — Part 2 must pick up where part one ended. No longer torn between two amorous, animalistic suitors, Bella (Kristen Stewart) has married vampire Edward (Robert Pattinson), produced his hybrid spawn and been turned into one of the undead herself to avoid actual death during childbirth. to enjoy all the perks of living forever — unstoppable strength and speed, the thrill of hunting for fresh blood and a seemingly unlimited sex drive. And Stewart seems to be enjoying herself for the first time, too. She’s done away with the sulking and lip-biting and thrives within her newfound ferocious femininity. The swoony Edward almost feels like an afterthought here: This is Bella’s time to sparkle. Jacob (Taylor Lautner), the childhood friend and werewolf

who was competing for her affections in small-town Forks, Wash., is still around and he’s assumed a new role: He has “imprinted” on Bella’s newborn daughter, the hideously named Renesmee (Mackenzie Foy), which makes him her protector and lover for life. Yes, this is creepy, but at least the film acknowledges as much. But the arrival of this beautiful child draws the suspicion and ire of the Volturi, the vampire elite living in Italy who view this half-human, half-

vampire as a threat. The bloodsucking Cullen clan and Jacob and his wolfy buddies must band together to prevent an attack, and to prove that the girl’s rare existence should be treasured. The gifted and versatile Michael Sheen unleashes the wonderfully weird performance we always knew was in him as Aro, the sinister leader of the Volturi. Meanwhile, Dakota Fanning as the powerful Volturi guard Jane maybe says one word during the entire movie, instead letting her intense, red eyes speak for her. It’s a massive cast that feels even larger during the closing credits. It’s a strangely melancholy send-off. Just as the Twilight series improves, it’s going away.

A Royal Affair (####) Gripping and beautifully rendered tale set in the 1760s about Denmark’s King Christian VII (Mikkel Boe Folsgaard), a half-witted buffoon who marries a foreigner and then comes under the influence of a Svengali-like court physician (Mads Mikkelsen). Before long, the doctor and the queen (Alicia Vikander) find refuge with each other while the king futilely battles with his rigid court counselors who fight against the Enlightenment. Stately storytelling By Christy Lemire AP Movie Critic

For anyone who cringed just a little while watching the trailer for Lincoln and worried that it might be a near-parody of a Steven Spielberg film, with its heartfelt proclamations, sentimental tones and inspiring John Williams score, fret not. The movie itself is actually a lot more reserved than that — more a wonky, nuts-and-bolts lesson about the way political machinery operates than a sweeping historical epic that tries to encapsulate the entirety of the revered 16th president’s life. That was a smart move on the part of Spielberg and screenwriter Tony Kushner, a Pulitzer winner for the play Angels in America who also wrote the script for Spielberg’s Munich. Talky and intimate but also surprisingly funny, Lincoln

‘Lincoln’ plays it safe, but Day-Lewis inhabits his role

focuses on the final four months of Abraham Lincoln’s life as he fought for the passage of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, abolishing slavery, and strove to unite a nation torn apart by the Civil War. (It is based partly on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s best-seller Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.) This tumultuous period provides a crucible to display everything Lincoln was made of, both his folksiness and fortitude. He tells long, winding anecdotes to enlighten and

charm those around him but also forcefully hammers home his points to get what he wants. Unsurprisingly, Daniel DayLewis inhabits the role fully. He disappears into it with small details and grand gestures, from his carriage to the cadence of his speech, and the Academy should probably just give him the best-actor Oscar now. Although Lincoln itself often feels too conservative, stagey and safe, Day-Lewis’ performances is full of so many clever choices that he keeps it compelling. Of course, the film has all the top-notch technical hallmarks we’ve come to expect from Spielberg: It’s handsomely staged and impeccable in its production design. But Lincoln is much more muted from an aesthetic standpoint than last year’s equally old-fashioned War Horse.

But it is unexpectedly humorous. The process of cajoling and coercing members of Congress to vote for passage of the amendment provides several estimable character actors with wonderfully showy roles. Tommy Lee Jones does a spin on his cantankerous screen persona as the quick-witted, fiercely verbal Republican congressman from Pennsylvania, Thaddeus Stevens, a strong proponent of abolition. David Strathairn is the sharp-minded and condescending Secretary of State William Seward, who was Lincoln’s foe before becoming a member of his Cabinet. There are almost too many great supporting players in juicy, tantalizingly small parts. You’d love to see more from all of them, including Lee Pace as a grandstanding Democrat railing against the amendment

on the House of Representatives floor, Michael Stuhlbarg as a conflicted congressman, Hal Holbrook as the powerful Lincoln ally Preston Blair and Jackie Earle Haley as the vice president of the Confederacy. And then there are James Spader, John Hawkes and Tim Blake Nelson as the cynical, glad-handing trio hired to lobby the toughest Democrats and secure those final, crucial votes. It gets to the point where major figures in Lincoln’s life — Sally Field as his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as his elder son who’s eager to see combat — don’t register as powerfully as they should because the script is just so packed. And that effort to contain so much history in one feature film especially extends to the ending.

Bruce Greenwood and John Goodman all give strong supporting performances. Rated R, 135 minutes. — AP Here Comes the Boom (##1/2) This comedy, with Kevin James as a tubby high school science teacher who becomes a mixed martial-arts sensation, is every bit as ridiculous as it

looks. James plays a burned-out science educator who’s roused to action when the school principal (Greg Germann) announces huge cutbacks. With Salma Hayek. Rated PG, 104 minutes. — AP

Rock Lottery’s short-lived bands go from start to stage in 12 short hours By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor

t’s been five years, but the Rock Lottery is back. Rock Lottery 11 unfolds on Saturday in front of a live audience. The event is one-part experiment and onepart mini-movement. Born in Denton in 1997, Rock Lottery is a day jam-packed with fun and frustration. Twenty-five musicians have their names drawn from a hat to form five bands that have but one mission: Spend the day rehearsing and writing songs. Twelve hours later, the bands have to perform three to five songs in front of a packed house. Only one of those songs can be a cover. Scott Porter, a member of Record Hop and Rock Lottery 11’s master of ceremonies, said the event is something that bridges Denton’s club bands and the city’s house show bands. “A while back there was — oh, whatever the nicer word for ‘schism’ is — in the scene. There was this separation of sorts between the house show people, who are very punk, very do-ityourself kind of folks, and the bands who play in clubs,” Porter said. “Rock Lottery brings those two scenes together.” Porter said the revival of Rock Lottery was

precipitated by two things: the rare block of free time in the life of Chris Flemmons, the founder of 35 Denton and the guitarist-singer of the Baptist Generals; and the green light from Rock Lottery founder Chris Weber, who was among the alumni of the Good/Bad Art Collective, an association of visual and performance artists who staged buzz-worthy shows, events and art happenings in Denton in the 1990s. It’s Good/Bad that gets the credit for creating Rock Lottery. “Maybe over the last year and a half, a conversation about bringing Rock Lottery back has been going on,” Porter said. “Once Flemmons and Weber said, ‘Yeah, you can do it,’ we got a committee together to get going on it.” The committee did the hard part. It ticked down a long list of local musicians who could handle the rigors of this bandin-a-can idea — bring creative types together, just add instruments and see what it all sounds like, Porter said. The idea is that a musician is invited just once to play Rock Lottery. The 10th anniversary lottery in 2007 was an all-star event that brought former lottery players back for a whole new gig. “We’re looking for diversity in every applicable sense of the word,” Porter said. “You want to produce a list of people that don’t really go together. You want all levels of experience, all different backgrounds, all different kinds of music. You want

something like Doug Burr, who does this quiet, pastoral, conservative music. And then you want someone like Rob Buttrum from [the now-defunct] House of Tinnitus, one of the major house show venues in Denton, who put together some of the harder, noisemusic kind of scenes.” Basically, Porter said, organizers put a premium on unpredictability. “What you hope for is having a guy like Tex Bosley, a drummer, getting into a group of musicians and doing something unexpected,” Porter said. “He’s a laid-back guy, a rock drummer. It’s not like you want to see him do some heavy metal drumming, but you’re hoping he might be like, ‘Hey, let’s try this,’ and then see what hap-

pens.” Hares on the Mountain frontman George Neal was in the second Rock Lottery, and was then invited into the 10th anniversary Rock Lottery. Why did he say yes to the invitation? “Because it’s Rock Lottery,” he said. “I’ve been to every Rock Lottery since it started in Denton. My first time was great. I consider it one of the best moments in my life.” Neal’s Rock Lottery band, Lacheenies De La Boonies, played several gigs after forming during the second event. “The second one was a struggle,” Neal said of Rock Lottery 10. “It was just harder. That, and we had to go on after [Denton jazz, pop and rock artist] Paul Slavens. He had the

experimental guitarist of all time in his band, plus that tall opera singer girl. What was her name? Yeah, Sarah Alexander. Talk about a hard act to follow. But they were very different experiences.” Porter said a goodly number of the lottery concert audience shows up the morning of the event to see what bands are formed. The bands are chosen and then taken to rehearsal spots that have been arranged for them. They return to the venue at 3 p.m. to announce the band’s name and to have a photographer shoot their band photo. The bands reconvene at

the venue at about 9:30 p.m. for the show. They arrive at a sold-out house. “That’s at every Rock Lottery. And the audience is 100 percent behind you,” said Porter, who performed in Rock Lottery 7 with the likes of Tim DeLaughter, Little Jack Melody and Emsy Robinson. “Bands do fail. Sometimes it doesn’t go well for bands. But the audience is behind you all the way.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877. Her e-mail address is cbreeding@dentonrc.com.

this comedy set in the world of competing college a cappella groups makes us fall in love with the very thing it’s making fun of. It’s ridiculous and predictable but also just a ton of fun, so you may as well give up and give into your inner musical theater geek. The debut feature from director Jason Moore (Broadway’s Avenue Q) and writer Kay Cannon (30 Rock), based on the nonfiction book by Mickey Rapkin, feels like a mash-up of Glee and Revenge of the Nerds. Bond finds and brings back the villain (Javier Bardem), but that just sets the stage for further action and adventure. Between the action sequences, director Sam Mendes takes time to build a personal drama that distinguishes this Bond film from its predecessors. Rated PG-13, 143 minutes. — B.A. Taken 2 ( 1/2) In this repetitive sequel, Liam Neeson again plays former CIA agent Bryan Mills. The father

(Rade Serbedzija) of the men Mills killed in the original now seeks revenge, which results in more of the same: Mills using his detecting and tracking skills to ferret out locations, beating up and killing an army of men, and taking part in endless car chases, this time through Istanbul. The main difference is that mother (Famke Janssen) and daughter (Maggie Grace) get to participate. Rated PG-13, 91 minutes. — B.A. This Must Be the Place ( ) This mesmerizing film slowly takes its time drawing in viewers with its story of Cheyenne (Sean Penn), a retired American rock star living in seclusion in Ireland. After his father’s death, he returns to the U.S. for a cross-country road trip to find a former SS officer and avenge his father’s humiliation during the Holocaust. Both the beautiful cine-
