n their latest show, Texas Woman’s University actors were also playwrights. The Panther’s Scream and Other Texas Tales started out as a collection of Texas and Southwest folk stories, said director Patrick Bynane. “Every member of the ensemble had a hand in the adaptation of the tales into the show,” said Bynane, a drama professor. “We had tales, written as prose, and we adapted them to the stage by using games, exercises and improvisations.” Bynane said he chose 12 stories from Texas and the Southwest that could form the basis of a playful show for all ages. He and the cast then developed them into the 80minute show. “I was not interested in finding a story with strong psychological nuance,” he said. “I wanted strong stories. I looked for the tales asking, ‘What is a

story that someone would want to tell?’ We found them. “One tale is about a coyote and cricket who challenge each other to a duel. That’s what we were looking for. We wanted stories that move. We adapted a tale about how the garter snake got his green skin. We did some cowboy stories, where a group of cowboys rid themselves of a pesky fighting rooster who is going after the horses and everybody. “I wanted stories that had a very nice sense of humor to them,” he said. Bynane said the actors move through the stories with a lot of energy and physical action, with the help of a cast member who is a musician. The musician will provide sound effects, underscore the action and move the audience from one story to the next with songs. The company uses basic costumes selected from the TWU costume inventory, and actors stand in as scenery. Shadow puppets are used in

some of the stories, and actors sometimes appear behind a screen. Each tale called for its own style, Bynane said, which means that in some scenes, actors try to evoke the animal they play. Other times, they play human characters who take on attributes of the animal

in the story. Bynane said the adaptation uses a technique pioneered by Second City comedy founder Paul Sills, the son of Viola Sporin, the mother of American improvisational comedy. When Sills left sketch comedy, he developed “story theater.” Bynane said the adaptation complements the department’s recent work with the Gaiety School of Acting, the national school of theater in Ireland. The partnership has produced two original plays — both of them ensemble shows — using games, exercises and improvisation. “There is a difference, though,” Bynane said. “The Gaiety project uses provocative visual images and creates a story from that image. Sills’ method uses a written story.” Bynane will cut The Panther’s Scream before TWU performs an international premiere at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, next summer.

After a decade on the road with the South Austin Jug Band, frontman James Hyland has blown the dust off his solo career with the release of Celestial Navigation. The album is nothing less than mesmerizing. “Being in the Jug Band the last 10 was like Triple A baseball, and now I’ve taken all that training and all that experience and I’m trying to take it to the next level with this album, Hyland said. “I wanted to do something new but be able to maintain a lot of the foundations, the sound that got me here. Hyland’s languid vocals are instantly recognizable and rest easily on a bed of countryinfused instrumentation that’s equally as soothing and melodic. Though the music is easygoing and relaxing, the lyrics aren’t always so. The opening track, “Radio City, is a noholds-barred stare-down with the music industry. That attitude of trying to create an original and free-form album seems to pervade Hyland’s psyche as well. The album was self-produced and paid for by fan contributions so the music and the money would stay where they belonged, he said. “The thing that bothers me the most about the record industry is that the money never ends up in the hands of who it should, Hyland said. “The money should either be in the fans’ hands or in the artist’s, Teasley Lane. but it always ends up in these business people’s hands. “Radio City isn’t the only track that pulls no punches. In what’s been called a fitting tribute to the U.S. Marines, the final song, “American Son, isn’t short on admiration for the military, but also digs deeper. Hyland said he was inspired to write the song on a flight back from Europe. “I was flying back overseas on a long flight and was sitting next to a kid who had just been fighting in Fallujah, he said. “It was hard for me to imagine

In writing the song, Hyland said he wanted to say something about the problems Marines face readjusting to life outside the military and how they deal with what the song calls “scars no eye could see. For Hyland, those kinds of experiences are the driving force behind his music. “I’m not going to lie, I like [touring] even when the gigs are bad and the hotels suck, he said. “We’re not here for a long time and to get to spend my time doing this, I feel very lucky.

The quartet storms the stage at Hailey’s this Sunday pushing their new album, Everybody, Come Outside! The melodic stylings of Pomegranates fall somewhere between MGMT and the White Stripes, with a hint of the Killers in the blend for good measure. Photographer who found hope at the end of the world brings experience home

VAULT: PHOTOGRAPHS BY DORNITH DOHERTY

ornith Doherty went to the top of the world to catch a piece of Genesis on film.

The result is “Vault: Photographs by Dornith Doherty,” opening today at UNT on the Square. Doherty has been on the photography faculty in the University of North Texas College of Visual Arts and

Design since 1996. She’s spent the last two years amassing what might be her most tectonic work. After she won a fellowship from UNT’s Institute for the Advancement of the Arts, Doherty packed an antique view camera, a high-end digital camera and a point-and-shoot, and traveled to Svalbard, a neutral territory in the Arctic. For two days, Doherty endured North Pole bluster to photograph the so-called “doomsday vault.” Doherty had two missions. She wanted to take documentary photographs of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, a bank that is collecting crop seeds from all over the world. Most of the seeds are collected by hand by volunteers. Once they are cataloged into the vault and suspended in vats of nitroglycerine, they are available to the nations they came from. The seed bank is the world’s insurance policy against starvation should blight or disaster kill crops.

But Doherty also wanted to dig deep. She wanted to look into the essence of human life. She did so by taking X-ray photographs of seeds in different stages of development. The result is “Vault,” a show that looks past the busy purpose of science, into the guts of seeds. “I was very much trying to show the macrocosm to the microcosm,” Doherty said. “I definitely wanted to make people think about the relationship between the two. I really, really gave a ton of thought to this exhibition. The opportunity to bring the documentary photographs into the gallery was important.

“There is that really long panel of the documentary work, showing what’s going on at the vault. It’s the first time the view camera shots have been shown with the X-ray photographs of the seed. It talks in a lot of ways about the work that the banks do, and it kind of broadened the story a little bit.” The story Doherty refers to is her interest in the way people interact with nature. Doherty has photographed a lot of landscapes, producing prints that “move” as the viewer walks past them, using either color or line to create the effect. She launched “Archiving Eden” in 2008. She worked with govern-

ment agencies and seed banks to take X-ray photographs of seeds — organic and cloned — then created collages of them, creating a poetic view of life at its most basic stages. “Vault” is a sort of extension of “Eden.” “Taking pictures of the vault at Svalbard itself was quite an experience,” she said. “It’s closed to the public except for this really short window of time. The vault has security measures in it that are interesting. When you get into the vault, they have a ‘blast curve’ that would displace a missile if someone shot it into the facility. They only open it at this one area. There’s a photo in the

“I intended those X-rays to make people think about that, about what makes us up also makes up the stars, and the food we eat. ... And then it also makes you think of death — that white glowing light.” — Dornith Doherty, photographer and UNT professor

When: Opens today. Runs through Feb. 18. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Where: UNT on the Square, 109 N. exhibition of a monitor and an ice-covered door. That monitor was in there because, for a while, only scientists could go into the vault. It’s definitely tuned into global warming. It’s built so that if the ice melts and the waters rise, it can be independent.” “Vault” escorts the viewer down one side of the gallery, showing photos of the vault, inside and out. Then, the viewer comes to the X-rays. The images are pictures of unexpected per-

fection and symmetry. “I was struck by its visual similarity to astronomical objects,” Doherty said. “People have told me, ‘Hey, that looks like a star.’ I intended those X-rays to make people think about that, about what makes us up also makes up the stars, and the food we eat. I wanted people to think how we’re just this macro to micro. And then it also makes you think of death — that white glowing light.” Doherty’s artistic expedition mirrored the work itself in at least one coincidence. Out of the three cameras she packed, Dornith said the view camera was the one she could rely on. That and the point-and-shoot. “People told me before I left, ‘Take extra batteries; the cold makes them go dead,’” she said. “But it wasn’t the batteries. It was the cold. The digital camera kept dying. We couldn’t get it to work. “It was the view camera, this 19th century technology, that got the job done,” Doherty said. OPENING FRIDAY Boxing Gym (###) Legendary documentarian Frederick Wiseman (Meat, The Store) sets his no-commentary cameras down in Richard Lord’s somewhat seedy boxing gym in Austin. The multitudes come and go, including the overweight amateur looking to impress, the borderline punch-drunk old-timer, housewives who want to learn to defend themselves, and others who simply want a good workout. Wiseman touches the pulse and captures the daily rhythms. Not rated, 91 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen The Next Three Days (###1/2) In this fast-paced action-thriller from Paul Haggis (Crash), Russell Crowe plays a man whose wife (Elizabeth Banks) is jailed for life for a murder she did not commit. He plots her escape, leading to a white-knuckle chase and a succession of close calls. Intense, fairly plausible and two good star turns. Rated PG-13, 133 minutes. — B.A. Today’s Special (##1/2) Predictable but mildly charming comedy about a New York sous chef (Aasif Mandvi) whose career takes a turn when his estranged father becomes ill, forcing him to take over the fledgling family restaurant, where he hires an eccentric cab driver (Naseeruddin Shah) in the kitchen. There’s a throwaway romantic subplot to distract from the quirky characters and tasty cooking sequences that are the film’s strength. The script could use more flavor and spice. Not rated, 99 minutes. At the Magnolia. — Todd Jorgenson Wild Target (##) A strong British cast is squandered in this comedythriller about an aging hitman (Bill Nighy), facing the constant scrutiny of his overbearing mother (Eileen Atkins), who becomes an unlikely bodyguard for an art thief (Emily Blunt) he was supposed to kill. What could have been a great showcase for Nighy is derailed by a flat and incoherent script that tries to blend French farce with old-fashioned British stuffiness, with strange and erratic results. Also stars Rupert Grint. Rated PG-13, 96 minutes. At the Magnolia. — T.J.

Going through a dark spell ‘Hallows’ looks, feels overcast

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor

In the latest film about the world’s greatest wizard, Harry Potter and his cohorts have set aside childish things. But in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, being grown up is nothing to celebrate. Director David Yates brings three young wizards back to the English countryside for a grim reunion. The evil Lord Voldemort has overthrown the Ministry of Magic. His goal? To purify the wizarding race and demonize, enslave and kill muggles — nonmagical humans. His cronies, the deatheaters, lurk everywhere. Harry is out to kill the dark lord by destroying magical objects called horcruxes, vessels that protect pieces of Voldemort’s soul and keep him immortal. Harry sets out with best friends Ron and Hermione to find the horcruxes using nothing but partial information and hunches. They’re on the run, hiding from deatheaters and “snatchers,” wizards who sell brethren of mixed ancestry to the new

Rated PG-13, 146 minutes. Opens Friday.

authorities for money or favor. Steven Kloves’ screenplay and Yates’ images, brought to life by cinematographer Eduardo Serra, set up their cast for epic adversity. Awash in inky shadows, the story is as overcast visually as it is emotionally. Long faces abound, and the landscape gets colder and harder with each scene. Yates propels the film with suspense and a sinister, creeping doom. In lesser hands, Deathly Hallows could be a plodding, boring mess. With Yates at the helm, J.K. Rowling’s novel is a spring that coils ever tighter, building to an ending that includes torture and murder. When Yates interrupts the live action to tell the story of the mysterious “deathly hallows,” shadow puppet-style animation recounts a chilling fairy tale with spooky whimsy.

Kloves’ script — written for movie fans, not readers — gives the three young stars plenty to work with. Daniel Radcliffe resumes the role of Harry with a quiet fire, while Rupert Grint and Emma Watson portray Ron and Hermione with joyless sobriety. Levity is rare in Deathly Hallows, and the protagonists deal with a menu of adult realities — self doubt, grief, isolation and fear — without any grown-up counsel. As if to drive home the post-adolescent nature of this story, Yates shows Ron’s greatest fear: Harry and Hermione in a startling, passionate (and artfully nude) embrace. In Deathly Hallows, even raging hormones live in anxiety’s shadow. Bill Nighy plays the new Minister of Magic, a twitchy Helena Bonham Carter reprises her role as the sociopath Bellatrix Lestrange and Ralph Fiennes returns as Voldemort. But the show belongs to Harry, Ron and Hermione. It’s a dour show, for sure, but the trio hints at the bigger truth: People who believe in love and loyalty can survive. They might even triumph. NOW PLAYING Due Date (##1/2) Two men must share a car and drive from Atlanta to

Los Angeles. Of course, one is a freespirited, irresponsible flake (Zach Galifianakis), and the other (Robert

Downey Jr.) is tightly wound and must be home by the end of the week when his wife (Michelle

Monaghan) is scheduled to deliver their first child. Todd Phillips (The Hangover) directs the broadly

humorous script filled with calculated detours and obvious personality clashes. Rated R, 95 minutes. — B.A.
