People celebrate Wednesday during “Les Sarmentelles,” the annual festival celebrating Beaujolais Nouveau in Beaujeu, France, capital of the Beaujolais region. Events around the world celebrate the uncorking of the new red wine.

ike Barrow said Beaujolais & More helps the Campus Theatre afford expenses that aren’t celebrated in the space’s neon marquee. “It’s not glamorous, but I tell folks it keeps us in toilet paper and light bulbs,” said Barrow, the managing director of Denton Community Theatre, which manages and maintains the historic downtown Campus Theatre. Beaujolais & More is the only annual fundraiser for the theater, which stays bright and busy every week except for a tiny moment between Christmas and New Year’s. The event is from 5:30 to

Fundraiser helps cover Campus Theatre’s everyday costs 7:30 p.m. today at the Denton Civic Center, 321 E. McKinney St. The centerpiece of the annual event is the uncorking of Beaujolais Nouveau, the first crush of the French region’s wine season. Considered fruity and light, Beaujolais Nouveau is meant to be drunk “young.” That means aging a bottle of the stuff will render it a maroon vinegar sludge after about six weeks on the shelf. (Well, it might not be that dramatic, but all bets say a three-month-old bottle of Nouveau will have little flavor.) Supporters of the theater will

find that the real showstopper will come from the kitchens of nearly 30 local restaurants. “The Campus Theatre line on our budget is a break-even line, and that’s a great situation to be in,” Barrow said. “Beaujolais pays for the bulbs in the lamps over the stage — and they are expensive. We probably spend anywhere from $300 to $400 a month on those bulbs.” The specialty bulbs are responsible for much of the mood audiences see and feel when they watch a play — from the cloying, hot shades of light seen in 2013’s August: Osage County and the perpetual shadows of

Les Miserables staged last month by Music Theatre of Denton. Barrow said the fundraiser covers janitorial supplies, and 20 percent of staffing costs — personnel who work just for the Campus Theatre, regardless of which company is presenting a show. “I know it sounds like a strange thing to say, but when we have a show like Les Mis, which sold out seven shows, our costs for those things triple. It’s pretty cool that something like Beaujolais covers that for us,” Barrow said. Tickets are a $30 donation. LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877 and via Twitter at @LBreeding DRC.

The University of North Texas Department of Dance and Theatre Arts presents “New Choreographers Concert 2014” this weekend.

Students’ work onstage

Dance concerts focus on original choreography

oth University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University present new dance concerts this weekend. TWU’s Department of Dance presents the “Dance UpClose” concert series. The concert presents the work of up-and-coming choreographers among TWU dance students. This fall, nine dance works were selected from almost 30 works that were auditioned. In Breaking Chains, a solo work choreographed by undergraduate Crineshia Mitchell, a woman overcomes the obstacles of racism. Introspection, by un-

dergraduate Ashleigh Pope, explores individuality through partnering, variations of time and reuniting in unison movement. Undergraduate Maddie Owens choreographed You Don’t Scream About the Real Thing, a trio that uses frantic gestures and deadpan expression to represent Ray Bradbury’s short story “The Last Night of the World.” Give and Take, by graduate student Melissa Johnson, is a duet that analyzes the relationships of internal and external conflict. Tiffany Bierly’s She Will represents the transference of

knowledge throughout a community. Abnormally Settled, by undergraduate student Laura Buzinski, is a collaboration that explores the challenges of compliance. Undergraduate student Aja Rose choreographed In the Midst of Darkness, a group dance that explores the desire to break out of self-constructed boundaries. Graduate student Nadia Dosal presents The Whole Is Greater Than the Sum of Its Parts. In this trio, dancers manipulate light as a way to fluctuate between memories of the past in relationship to their present identity. The show closes with

Inquitude, a work in which the choreographer, graduate student Jessica Murphy, explores the idea of physical and mental discomfort. Performances are at 4 p.m. today and 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tickets cost $6 for adults and $4 for students and seniors. Seating is general admission in the TWU Dance Studio Theatre in the Dance Building, at 304 Administration Drive. For more information, visit www.twu.edu/ dance or call 940-898-2086. The UNT Department of Dance and Theatre Arts presents its New Choreographers Concert this weekend.

Senior dance majors have created the dances that make up “Agony, Ecstasy and Floating Tanks,” and other seniors will dance in them. Fifty UNT students dance 100 roles in the piece, composed of eight dances. Group A dances at 8 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday. Group B will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets cost $5 and may be purchased by credit card over the phone by calling 940-5652428 or 817-267-3731, ext. 2428. The box office opens an hour prior to the show.

‘Mockingjay’ a dull rejoinder to series’ last thrill By Boo Allen Film Critic booa@att.net

The revolution lives on in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1, the new release based on the last novel in Suzanne Collins’ trilogy. Part 2, also based on the single novel, will end the series next November. It might seem like a mercantile approach to halve the final film inspired by a series of novels, pioneered in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and right now in The Hobbit. (Harry Potter’s last hurrah clocked in at 784 pages, and seemed to dictate its two-movie treatment. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again is a 300-page jaunt by master storyteller Tolkien, and Collins’ Mockingjay is a 400page finale.) Jennifer Lawrence returns as Katniss Everdeen, the only living hope of friends, family and followers from her downtrodden home in District 12, one of the farthest-flung (and consequently, nearly the poorest) from wealthy capital city Panem (that’s Latin for “bread,” by the

Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence, right) and Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth) bide their time in “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1.” way). In this last episode, Lawrence also single-handedly carries a film strangely lacking in any of the action or character involvement of the first two entries. Director Francis Lawrence takes Peter Craig and Danny Strong’s script and seems to emphasize its most lethargic elements. After her previous act of rebellion against the state, Katniss has now found refuge in District 13, the last and poorest of area codes that serve as slave labor to Panem. There, she agrees to the request from President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore) and Plutarch (Philip Seymour Hoffman) to serve as the rebellion’s Mockingjay, a publicity symbol for the revolution.

At that point, the movie holds promise as another exciting, thrill-filled adventure. Instead, a succession of scenes follows in which Katniss tours various destroyed areas, usually followed a crew filming her for propaganda purposes. When not touring, she sits around with furrowed brow discussing various political gambits. Half the movie seems to take place in giant green-screenfilmed sequences filled with portraits of the aftermath of destruction. Otherwise, the limited and pedestrian special effects never dazzle or amaze as in the two earlier versions. Besides the redundant scenes of destruction, most of the rest of the film unfolds in

dark chambers of underground lairs, tunnels, boardrooms and the like. Director of cinematography Jo Willems bears the thankless and fruitless task of breathing life into this succession of gloomy, energy-sapping settings.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1 Rated PG-13, 123 minutes Opens Friday.

The bulk of the plot’s remainder centers around the survival of Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and the taunting of Katniss by President Snow (Donald Sutherland) — for instance, bombing a hospital filled with rebel survivors, and showering Katniss with a deluge of white roses. If you’re new to the trilogy, be aware that director Lawrence works in a sort of shorthand that might assume full viewer preawareness since many, if not most, Mockingjay viewers will arrive at theaters having read the books. But Mockingjay accomplishes its most important task of killing time until the concluding chapter arrives. Bythewood. Writer-director David Ayer delivers a fairly standard war movie. The special effects help render a grim, realistic portrait of men in battle. Rated R, 135 minutes. — Boo Allen Gone Girl (★★★★) Ben Affleck stars as Nick, whose wife, Amy (an excellent Rosamund Pike), goes missing. Initially an object of pity, Nick becomes a public pariah when it looks like he may have killed her. Then the tables turn with a string of unexpected surprises. Director David Fincher works from the novel by Gillian Flynn, who also wrote the screenplay. Fine supporting cast includes Carrie Coon, Tyler Perry, Kim Dickens and Neil Patrick Harris. Rated R, 145 minutes. — B.A. Interstellar (★★★) Writerdirector Christopher Nolan creates a special-effects extravaganza about a crew of astronauts leaving a doomed Earth for parts unknown to

With Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine and Wes Bentley, Casey Affleck. Rated PG-13, 169 minutes. — B.A. The Maze Runner In a postapocalyptic future, an amnesiac teen wakes up trapped in a massive maze with a group of other boys and has to find a way to escape. Directed by Wes Ball. Rated PG-13, 113 minutes. — LAT Nightcrawler (★★★★) Jake Gyllenhaal’s bold, committed performance makes Nightcrawler one of the most entertaining movies of the year — though hardly the most profound. Gyllenhaal plays Lou Bloom, a forlorn petty thief who discovers the “nightcrawlers” — freelance cameramen who follow police scanner traffic to grisly scenes. Acquiring explicit footage one night of a gasping carjack victim, Lou takes it to KWLA, where Nina (Rene Russo), news director on the graveyard shift, knows she’s found a great source of sleaze. Compelling and altogether impressive directorial debut for screenwriter Dan Gilroy (The Bourne Legacy). “I’d heard stories about them growing up, and finally, after growing up, I am in charge of Rock Lottery,” Crosswhite said. Crosswhite said the day of Rock Lottery — for those who aren’t picked to play, at least — is almost a breeze. Dan’s Silverleaf serves breakfast at 9:30 a.m. Saturday for participating musi-

cians and fans who gather for the 10 a.m. drawing. In the evening, the soundboard warms up and the venue has the best barkeeps on staff manning the taps and bottles. “I would say the most laborintensive part of Rock Lottery is surprising,” Crosswhite said. “You’d think it would be secur-

ing meals and getting help, but because it’s a fundraiser, that has been really easy. The most labor-intensive part is constantly reminding people that its coming. Every two weeks, you have to remind everyone that it’s coming up. The musicians in town are super busy, and I worry they might forget about it.”
