Rare carols Soprano marks Christmas with little-heard music

“E

nter Emmanuel” is the Christmas recital soprano Beverly Hoch has wanted to do for years. “Singers usually get to do ‘O Holy Night’ and those other standards when the Christmas season rolls around,” Hoch said. “Those are great pieces. I love singing them. But there are all these pieces I’ve always wanted to do that you just never get to do.” Some of those pieces: the Moravian tune “Loveliest Emmanuel,” written in 1800 by John Antes; five selections from Diez Villancicos Espanoles by Joaquin Nin; and three selections from Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols. Hoch, a voice instructor at Texas Woman’s University, will perform those pieces Sunday, in a benefit concert for Instruments of Change, a ministry that takes musical instruments and teaching to

children in parts of the world affected by disaster. Hoch and co-founder Mike Steinel, who is her husband, have made trips to Kenya and plan a trip to Haiti in early 2011. Some common themes run through Hoch’s selections for the concert. “A lot of the selections are from a child’s point of view,” Hoch said. “I think the faith of a child is a really pure kind of faith.” She will perform “Two Shepherd Boys,” a John Jacob Niles composition that tells the story of boys visited by an angel. It’s that selection that touches on another theme that runs through the recital: the question of what gift a humble person can get for a king. “What can I give?” Hoch said. “That’s throughout the program. As corny as it

sounds, I believe dreams can come true. I believe that the humility of realizing that we are children of God, and that we still have something to give — that’s all possible.” Hoch said she knows the performance comes at a time when listeners might be considering a nice long appointment with their sofa, after Thanksgiving dinner and the Black Friday bustle. She’s planned a recital that includes Terri Sundberg on flute, Ellen Ritscher Sackett on harp, George Gagliardi on guitar and piano, David Morgan on piano and organ and TWU’s newly formed chamber choir, Pioneer Voices. Admission is free to Sunday’s concert, but all donations support the ministry. — Lucinda Breeding

Spindrift With Delmore Pilcrow and Handbrake. Doors open at 9 p.m. Sunday at Hailey’s Club, 122 W. Mulberry St. Cover is $6 for patrons 21 and older and $8 for those younger than 21.

The five outlaws take the stage Sunday at Hailey’s Club, bringing the “neo-cosmic cowboy revolution and their own genre, “spaghetti-Western psychedelia, to Denton. Like a tumbleweed soaked in LSD, Spindrift’s songs are as lonesome and rambling as the Western deserts that spawned them. Spindrift has taken to the road to raise money to produce its fourth album, Dead Meadow, songs from which will be featured during the Los Angeles band’s range-roaming. If the new album is anything like the others, it will prove to be a unique experience. On

CRAWL IV AND AUCTION

By Lucinda Breeding Brian “Beerman” Houser makes no bones about the annual pub crawl benefit he launched three years ago: The bagpipes and drums help add to the group as they march from bar to bar in downtown Denton. Saturday night, the pipers and drummers will move from Dan’s Silverleaf to Hooligans, then to Andy’s Bar and on to the Labb, then the Boiler Room and finally back to Dan’s. Seven acts play at the venues, beer taps will flow and the Michael Joseph “Billy Ray” Valentine fund will grow. Houser has been coordinating the fall fundraiser, which benefits the Denton Firefighters Memorial Fund in Valentine’s honor, since 2007. What began as a gig now includes a host of local musicians, not to mention a nice number of listeners. “I tell you what, these pub crawl crowds have been pretty good. I think we had 300 people last year. When you have 300 people come into your bar for an hour and they all buy two drinks or more than that, well, that’s a good hour for a bar,” Houser said. It’s not bad for the memorial fund, which helps the victims of fire, whether they are firefighters, families of firefighters or those who’ve lost property. The crawl usually happens the weekend following Thanks-

OPENING FRIDAY

Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer (###1/2) The latest documentary from Oscar winner Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side) chronicles the career of the New York governor who resigned following the revelation of a sex scandal in 2008. Gibney suggests that Spitzer’s downfall was perpetrated by the enemies he made on Wall Street during a successful run as the state’s attorney general, and although it seems to be missing the answers, the film offers a compelling look at the power of Big Finance. Rated R, 117 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson Enter the Void (##) The latest exercise in provocation from director Gaspar Noe (Irreversible) is an aggressively shocking story of sex and drugs set within the Tokyo club scene, about a young drug dealer (Nathaniel Brown) who dies but returns as a ghost to watch over his impetuous sister (Paz de la Huerta). The result is certain to polarize viewers, with its powerful imagery and audacious approach not able to compensate for Noe’s chronic self-indulgence and repetitious tendencies. Not rated, 137 minutes. At the Texas Theatre. — T.J. Faster Following a 10-year prison stint, Driver (Dwayne Johnson) sprints through the gates to take vengeance on those responsible for his brother’s murder. With Billy Bob Thornton as a veteran police officer and Oliver Jackson-Cohen as an eager assassin. Rated R, 98 minutes. Love and Other Drugs (##) Intriguing parts never make a satisfying whole in this 1990s romantic satire about a brash young Viagra salesman (Jake Gyllenhaal) whose attitude is placed in check by a troubled painter (Anne Hathaway) dealing with a medical condition. The latest from director Ed Zwick (Legends of the Fall) has a lively pace and strong performances, but it’s also wildly uneven, with several frustrating shifts in tone that keep the audience at an emotional distance. Rated R, 112 minutes. — T.J. The Nutcracker in 3-D (#) Cheap and ill-conceived adaptation of Tchaikovsky’s timeless ballet about a young girl (Elle Fanning) whose uncle (Nathan Lane) gives her a magical nutcracker that transports her into fantasy world of fairies and sugarplums. Everything about this version has been done better elsewhere,

Burlesque Rated PG-13, 119 minutes. Now playing in theaters.

hristina Aguilera has a fantastic voice. Most of us know that already. Those who don’t will find out by watching Burlesque, a concert film — I mean movie musical — that marks her big-screen debut. The 30-year-old pop singer makes a positive first impression with a performance that’s not much of a stretch. But the project as a whole is a predictable rags-to-riches story spiced up only by some lively production numbers. In other words, it’s a soundtrack in search of a movie. Aguilera stars as Ali, a waitress from small-town Iowa who moves to Los Angeles in search of stardom. She happens upon a neo-burlesque club on the Sunset Strip operated by a diva (Cher) on the downside of her dancing career. Just a few scenes later, she’s forcing herself into an on-stage audition, after which her voice and dance moves make her the attraction that could save the debt-ridden nightclub from an investor (Eric Dane) who wants to demolish it in favor of highrise apartments. She also

begins falling for a bartender (Cam Gigandet) who tries to keep her ego in check. Cher, in her first movie role in seven years, reveals that she still has a powerful voice at 64 by belting out a pair of big numbers, including a dazzler when Ali first enters the club. But her acting abilities — as well as those of supporting cast members such as Stanley Tucci, Kristen Bell and Alan Cumming — are squandered by a script that lacks surprise when the music isn’t playing. The movie marks the directorial debut of actor Steve Antin (The Accused), who also wrote the screenplay. He drowns the film in cliches, relying on formulaic staples such as the heroine trying to save the club from financial ruin and falling in love with the forbidden co-worker. Antin offers a sanitized glimpse into the operation of a burlesque club instead of using the setting to his advantage. The plentiful musical numbers have sporadic appeal, both in terms of songs and choreography, even if it gradu-

from the production design to the subpar 3-D effects to the excessively dark tone that might be off-putting to some youngsters. Even the musical numbers have been butchered. Rated PG, 110 minutes. — T.J. Tangled (###1/2) Energetic 3-D animated musical retelling of the story of Rapunzel (voiced by Mandy Moore), the teenage girl whose long, flowing hair possesses magical powers, causing her to be kidnapped and held in a tower until a petty thief becomes her unlikely rescuer, leading to an adventure filled with quirky characters both good and evil. It’s a crisply animated tale with a couple of standout production numbers and a strong heroine. While slow in spots, it has appeal for all ages. Rated PG, 101

minutes. — T.J. Welcome to the Rileys (###) On a convention trip to New Orleans, a plumbing supplier from Indianapolis (James Gandolfini) somehow incongruously finds himself entangled, but not sexually, with a 16-year-old hooker. He is obviously trying to somehow replace the daughter he lost some years before. In this not always believable film, the narrative may be false but the emotions are real. Rated R, 110 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas and Plano. — B.A. The Wildest Dream: Conquest of Everest (###1/2) Fascinating historical documentary about American mountaineer Conrad Anker, who attempts to discover the truth behind the mystery of George

Mallory, whose body was found atop Mount Everest 75 years after his attempt to scale the peak. Anker restages the voyage, complete with period clothing and equipment. Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) go on a grim journey to find the horcruxes that keep Harry’s nemesis, Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes), alive. Absorbing, disturbing and not for young children. Rated PG-13, 146 minutes. — Lucinda Breeding

Watson and fellow lighting association member Micah Pazoureck were quick to point out that the city does donate tables through the Denton Parks and Recreation Department. That donation, along with the county government’s waiving of fees to use the historic Square and courthouse, are essential.
