Is your home ready for winter? It’s time to start preparing your home to make sure it can efficiently handle colder weather. “There are many small, lowhassle items you can complete to ‘winterize’ your home,” says David Andreozzi, principal of Andreozzi Architects and the American Institute of Architect’s (AIA) National Chair of CRAN, the AIA’s Custom Residential Architects Network. “Prepping your home for the season ensures you aren’t dealing with major issues when they are harder to tackle, and can prevent costly repairs come springtime.” To help homeowners prepare, Andreozzi offers the following advice. Check Chimneys and Gutters Regular checks of your chimneys and gutters are both safetysmart and wallet-friendly. Fireplace dampers should be closed and functioning properly to pro-
tect against drafts and keep heating costs down. Leaving a damper open or using a broken one is the equivalent to leaving a window open when the air conditioner is running. While sometimes not as noticeable as a chimney draft, ice is another danger. It can build up in gutters quickly if there is debris there from previous seasons. In order for ice to melt and
drain properly, drains must be clear. Clean your gutters when it’s warm to prevent clogs and costly replacements. Remember Watering Systems This is especially important for new home buyers who may not think to look for this. Water trapped in an outdoor faucet, spigot or irrigation system can cause a pipe to burst if ice settles
inside. Make it part of your winterizing routine to ensure that outdoor plumbing and pipes are clear before temperatures drop. Designing for Weather In the design process of your home, it is important that your home is sealed correctly to account for local weather. An architect can advise on how to prevent unwanted drafts. If you have an older home or apart-

ment, use self-adhesive weather stripping to seal cracks in windows and doors, too. Create a Timetable The change of seasons means maintenance. Create a checklist of tasks with a timetable so you are never scrambling at the last minute. Small items that often slip between the cracks can be taken care of in a timely fashion -- like changing batteries in smoke detectors or cleaning the pilots of the heating system. Andreozzi recommends using a professional twice a year to help tick off some of the trickier items, such as sealing windows. To ensure that you’re hitting all of the pain points, an architect can help you formulate a full checklist to make the most out of your prep work. To find an architect in your area, visit http://architectfinder.aia.org/. By preparing now, you can save time and money later. -StatePoint

Go green with your campfire this fall 5 There is no hallmark of fall fun quite like a campfire -whether you’ve gathered some neighbors and friends in your own backyard or you’re on a backpacking adventure. In fact, 99 percent of campers have a campfire and 91 percent of campers “roast” over their campfires, according to research from The MindClick Group. And now there are some great ways to give this age-old tradition some innovative twists. Go Green Take care of the nature that you’re enjoying. Remember to keep the honorable principle of “leave no trace” top of mind. Regularly clear your campfire and your campsite of debris and garbage. This is also a good practice to keep bears at bay. Separate your bottles and cans, as many parks have separate bins for recyclables. You can also green your campfire by your choice of what you burn. Instead of traditional firewood, consider a cleaner-
burning roasting log to reduce your impact on the air around you. For example, duraflame Campfire Roasting Logs are made from 100 percent renewable resources and burn 60 percent cleaner than firewood in a fire pit. The logs are resource efficient. Just five pounds of Campfire Roasting Logs creates a fire equivalent to about 24 pounds of firewood. And because they are made with wood charcoal, recycled sawdust and renewable bio wax, no trees are cut down to produce them. They are also easy to transport for your camping trip, and stack and burn like wood for a robust fire that creates hot, glowing coals safe for roasting marshmallows, hot dogs or other campfire food. Old Treats Made New S’mores, a staple of campfire eats, are a delight for children and adults alike. But you don’t need to stick with the standard recipe at your next campfire. Get

Tips to grill your Thanksgiving turkey, trimmings Thanksgiving can mean too many cooks in the kitchen, so consider taking some prep outside. While grilling is usually associated with summer, more Americans are recognizing its year-round potential. In fact, 80 percent of North American households own a grill or smoker and 60 percent use it year-round, according to recent statistics from the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association. It’s no surprise that many Thanksgiving recipes can be reinvented outdoors. “Grilling your bird over lump charcoal creates a succulent, flavorful entrée,” says Don Crace, President of Cowboy Charcoal, a brand that caters to grilling purists of the charcoal variety. For a uniquely smoky flavor sure to impress the crowd, try this recipe for Cowboy’s Perfect Bourbon-Maple Smoked Turkey: Ingredients • 1 thawed or fresh turkey • 1 onion • 2-3 garlic cloves • 3 sprigs rosemary • 3 sprigs thyme • 1 bay leaf • Olive oil • Salt (at least 2 cups) • Pepper • Cowboy All Natural Lump Charcoal • Hickory wood chips • 1 cup bourbon • 1/2 cup real maple syrup Directions • Remove neck, giblets and excess fat from turkey. Make gravy from giblets and neck, if desired.
• Completely rinse turkey inside and out. • Place turkey in large brining bag that will fit in your refrigerator. • Create brine with 2 gallons water (or enough to cover turkey), 2 cups salt, 1 cup bourbon
and 1/2 cup maple syrup. • Refrigerate at least four hours. • Remove turkey from brine, rinse and thoroughly pat dry. • Add onion (sliced in half), garlic cloves, rosemary, thyme and bay leaf to inside of turkey.
Season the inside with salt and pepper. • Tie legs together with cooking string and twist wing tips under the back or cover with foil to prevent burning. • Brush outside of turkey with olive oil and sprinkle with
salt and pepper. • Soak a full package of Cowboy’s Hickory Wood Chips in a large bowl for 30 minutes. • Place a foil pan below the grate on one side of grill to catch drippings. To prevent excess smoke, fill it halfway with water. • On the other side of grill, add two pounds charcoal and light it. • Drain water from wood chips. • When lump charcoal is ash gray, add about one cup of wood chips to the fire. Place grate back on grill. Let preheat for about 10 minutes. • Arrange turkey on the grate, above the pan. • Place lid on grill and cook turkey for approximately 15 to 20 minutes per pound, until internal temperature reaches 180 degrees. • Add additional wood chips and charcoal every 30 minutes or as needed. • When done, transfer turkey to serving platter, cover with foil and let stand 15 to 20 minutes before carving. Turkey isn’t the only food to take outdoors on Thanksgiving -- impart dynamic, smoky flavors to vegetables, fruits and even desserts by grilling over charcoal. For year-round outdoor cooking tips, as well as food safety handling tips, visit the Cowboy Charcoal Blog, “The Roundup” at www.cowboycharcoal.com/blog. Cooking outdoors knows no seasonal bounds. Delight Thanksgiving feasters by grilling your bird and the trimmings. -StatePoint

Prevent your heating bills from going through the roof Heating your home can be a costly endeavor. But you don’t have to make your family suffer in shivering silence to save some money. There are plenty of steps you can take to optimize your heating efforts, as well as prep your home for several months of cool weather. • Check and maintain your insulation. Improperly insulated walls, floors, attics, basements and crawl spaces drain away heat and can encourage mold and mildew. • Add weather stripping and caulk around windows and doors to prevent drafts which waste energy and money. • Install a programmable thermostat that shuts itself off during the day when you're away and at night when you're asleep. This will keep you comfortable when you're home and save you money when you're not. • Keep vents and returns free of obstructions. Don't lay carpet over vents, place furniture over or in front of them or obstruct the flow of air.
• Keep your air filters clean. Check them every couple of weeks and change them as directed by the manufacturer. • Let the sun shine in by opening curtains on cold days. Get heavy drapes to keep things cozy at night. • Review last year's energy bills. If your heating costs are drastically higher this year, a qualified HVAC/R technician may be able to diagnose the problem. Schedule such inspections twice annually, even if you aren’t experiencing any detectable issues. • When choosing a contractor for installation or maintenance, important factors must be taken into consideration. A qualified HVAC/R technician is a skilled professional with proven knowledge who has passed specialized tests. So look for a technician certified by North American Technician Excellence (NATE), the nation's largest independent non-profit certification body for HVAC/R technicians. • Even the most eco-friendly,
high-efficiency products and appliances can waste money and energy if they're not installed, serviced, and maintained properly. Work with certified technicians to ensure your HVAC/R equipment is delivering on its promised energy efficiency. • Consider alternatives to conventional heating. For example, geothermal heating systems use the earth’s natural heat and are among the most efficient and energy-conserving heating technologies currently available. • Replacing your system? Purchase equipment with an ENERGY STAR label. High-efficiency systems reduce your impact on the environment and can also save you money. You may also be eligible for a Federal Tax Credit. Check with your local NATE contractor to determine qualifying models. Also, for optimal performance be sure to select the proper size system for your home. Simple recipes work best for holiday feasts 13 “There are a gazillion recipes in the world, but the lifesaving recipe for when times are crazy, that’s priceless,” says Anne Byrn, food writer and author of the new, “Anne Byrn Saves the Day! Cookbook.” A collection of crowd-pleasing recipes from her network of friends and family, Byrn’s book features this recipe for Kentucky Brown Sugar Pie, perfect for a feast, as it takes only about 20 minutes to pull together, less time than a drive to the bakery and back -- and is more scrumptious than anything complicated to make or store-bought: Ingredients • 1 store-bought 9-inch pie crust, thawed if frozen • 1 cup packed dark brown sugar • 1⁄3 cup all-purpose flour • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 2 cups whole milk • 3 large eggs, at room temperature • 1 tablespoon salted or unsalted butter • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract •1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar • 4 tablespoons granulated sugar Directions • Let eggs come to room temperature, taking them out of the refrigerator half an hour before making the pie. • Transfer crust to glass pie pan if leaving it in aluminum foil pie pan. If it’s not a preformed crust, fit it into a glass pie plate. • Bake pie crust following package directions until light brown. Let crust cool on rack while making filling. Leave oven

duce heat to low and continue cooking filling until completely thickened, two minutes longer. Remove from heat. • Separate eggs, placing yolks in a small bowl and whites in a medium stainless steel or glass bowl. Set egg whites aside. Beat egg yolks with fork to combine. Add 3 tablespoons of the hot filling to egg yolks and stir well to combine. Whisk the egg mixture into the saucepan of filling. Place pan over low heat and whisk until yolks are well combined and filling is thick, creamy, and smooth, about two minutes. Remove pan from heat and stir in butter and vanilla. Pour filling into baked crust. • Make the meringue: Using an electric mixer, beat egg whites on high speed until frothy, one to two minutes. Add cream of tartar and continue beating on high. Gradually add granulated sugar. Beat egg whites until stiff and glossy and sugar is dissolved, four to five minutes. • Pile spoonfuls of meringue on top of filling. Using a spatula, push meringue to the edge of crust to seal in filling. Smooth the top of the pie. • Bake until meringue is lightly browned, eight to ten minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool about three hours before serving. More information about the book can be found at www.Workman.com. This holiday, wow your guests with simple yet flavorsome recipes. -StatePoint

Decorate your home this season for under $100
15 Real Estate
11 5 14
When it comes to filling your home with fall flair and warm festive cheer, you don’t have to rely on generic décor purchased from the store, which can be pricy and forgettable. This holiday season make your home unique with a little DIY. “You’ll be surprised how simple tools, such as good, quality painter’s tape make all the difference in DIY projects,” says Carmen De La Paz, former host of HGTV’s “Hammer Heads” and 3M spokesperson. When it comes to decorating, it’s important that your ideas are fresh, unique and different. To help you get started, De La Paz is offering some craft inspirations that cost under $100 to create. • Spruce up your home. Paint an accent wall. It will feel like you made big changes. • Be the ultimate holiday host. Use recycled materials to create personable, homemade parting gifts. • Using painter’s tape to create a fabric table runner can be a simple way to skip freehand grunt work, allowing you to create a repetitive pattern with more precision and less stress. • Be dramatic and theatrical with tabletop decorations. Think of a theme and stick to it. The use of one item in different sizes and colors will make a strong statement. • Store-bought seasonal décor can be expensive. Make your own for a fraction of the cost. By using new ScotchBlue Painter’s
Tape with Advanced Edge-Lock Paint Line Protector, you can get super sharp paint lines and clean removal for your next painting project. Looking for a fun way to spruce up your Thanksgiving ta-
ble? Why not try these “DIY Thanksgiving Clipboard Place Cards” from Sarah Hearts Blog for ScotchBlue Painter’s Tape: Supplies • 5 x 7 clipboards • Chalkboard paint, any color
• Foam brush • Chalk or chalkboard markers • Mini pencils, one for each place setting • “I am thankful for” cards, printed and cut out
• ScotchBlue Painter’s Tape for Delicate Surfaces with Advanced Edge-Lock Paint Line Protector Instructions • Use painter’s tape to maskoff the bottom of the clipboard. Position the bottom edge of tape about 1.5 inches from bottom edge. • Use the foam brush to paint a coat of chalkboard paint on the bottom of clipboard. Allow it to dry completely. Add a second coat. If you’re using a patterned clipboard, you may need to add a third or fourth coat. Once your final coat has dried for about 15 minutes, carefully remove tape. • Lightly wipe the chalk-covered surface with a paper towel to remove excess dust. • Write each guest’s name on the chalkboard painted area and clip a printed “I am thankful for” card to the top of the clipboard. Slide in a mini pencil at the top and your place card is ready to display on your holiday table Feeling inspired? Channel that creativity by submitting your own home refresh project that costs less than $100 and you could win $5,000 to put towards a home makeover. Visit www.ScotchBlue.com/homecontest to enter the “Home of ScotchBlue Painter’s Tape” contest from October 1 through November 15, 2014 and see official rules. Creativity and a few tools are all you need to add flair to your home this season. -StatePoint
