is a benefit concert in two parts, McGee said. The first half will include music by the church’s youth choir and the Haynes Sisters, a 1940’s swing-era trio — performing some numbers with backup from a 100-member crew of orchestra players and vocalists. The show’s second half goes a more solemn route, offering an elaborate Nativity with live actors and multimedia. “It involves our whole church family in a way that impacts people through eternity,” he said. “It communicates the love and hope that we have through Jesus Christ.”

CHRISTMAS AT THE CAMPUS
Director Betty Kay Seibt wants theater and Christmas buffs to know that The Second Shepherds’ Play is religious. There’s no way around it. The centerpiece of the 2010 Christmas at the Campus celebration is a play plucked from the Middle Ages, when the masses depended on priests and playwrights to learn Scriptures. “There’s a possibility that we might turn people off by doing a show that is so overtly religious, I know,” Seibt said. “But I think is has a lot of appeal.” The work, which is the first half of Denton Community Theatre’s annual holiday fare, is part of a literary form referred to by scholars of medieval writings as “cycle plays.” Cycle plays told the story of the Bible — from the world’s creation in Genesis to the passion of Christ. Professional guilds of the 1400s — barrel builders, blacksmiths, tailors — would adopt part of the cycle and perform it in grand festival style during religious feasts. There are regional versions of the cycles, especially in England, with scripts specific
What: Two holiday comedies — The Second Shepherds’ Play and the Trammell Group’s performance of Christmas Pie … A Madrigal Farce and Feaste. When: 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday Where: Campus Theatre, 214 W. Hickory St. Details: Admission costs $20 for adults and $10 for ages 12 and younger. to York, Coventry, Chester, Townley, Wakefield and a traveling version. Seibt, who has a doctorate in rhetoric and a concentration in English, wrote her dissertation on Middle Ages literature. Seibt said the small company of actors are staging the play with few set pieces and rough costuming. In the play, a ne’er-do-well named Mack steals a sheep from diligent shepherds while they sleep. He whisks the sheep home, where his wife worries the shepherds will track Mack and discover his crime. They pretend the sheep is a baby when the shepherds trace Mack to his home. Comedy ensues, and before the end, Mack is convinced that God wants him for better than a
thief. The play is based on the liturgical annunciation to the shepherds. “The idea is that we all have to participate in our own redemption,” Seibt said. “You have to hear the message to come and see. And what you witness makes you reflect on your life.” The Trammell Group (Donna Trammell, Kay Lamb, Buster Maloney, Bob Rodgers, Lindsay Keffer and Mike Barrow) reprise Trammell’s Christmas Pie. It’s a typical spread of Trammell’s parodies. They are naughty in a few parts, but the theme is joy and abundance. LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877. he Gay Blades’ name might make you think of flamboyant ice skaters, but the New York band’s songs wouldn’t be at home on the rink. The duo’s kick-in-the-head drums, punk-inspired guitars and straitjacket-party style vocals are hard to dislike. That isn’t to say they can’t turn down their amps once in a while. The song “Why Can’t I Grow a Beard?” showcases an acoustic talent that Jack Johnson would be hard pressed not to recognize. The Gay Blades come to Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios on Monday. If their live show contains even a fraction of the energy present on their albums, patrons are liable to endure neck problems from aggressive head-banging.

‘Psychosis’ pulls away layers of depression When theater buffs think about the stage and mental illness, they probably think about Equus, a sober, wordy drama about a boy’s perversion with horses. Playwright Sarah Kane takes on profound depression in 4.48 Psychosis. The play’s approach is as sober as Equus, but Kane found that music and movement demanded a place in the story. The Denton-based Sundown Collaborative Theatre ends its run of the drama this weekend at Art Six Coffee House. In the play, a patient with severe depression (Olivia Emile) bares her soul to a new doctor (George Ferrie). In her purge, thorny relations with former lovers and other doctors come out. She’s influenced by voices (Joanna Wesson and Brittany Willis). The past seeps into the present, and the patient realizes her only moments of clarity are at 4:48 a.m. Kane’s script is for adults — her truth-telling calls for strong language and adult situations. Performances are at 8 p.m. today, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $10 for adults, and $8 for students and

Feet on fire for the Lord
Eight-yearolds Gary Tijerina, left, and Jiham Esquivel prepare to dance a traditional Mexican dance as part of the novenas, a nineday celebration of the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. A record number of local Catholic Latinos joined this year’s celebration of the feast, which commemorates Aztec peasant Juan Diego’s encounter with the Virgin Mary in 16th-century Mexico.

If anything, it appears that every house on the block has emptied to watch a record number of Denton’s Hispanic Catholics celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. There’s a lot to take in: scarlet costumes embellished with shiny beads, feathers and the image of the Virgen de Guadalupe — sometimes called “the dark-skinned virgin” — shining from the backs of every costume. Local Catholics of Mexican heritage are in the midst of a nine-day celebration of an ancient miracle, one that signifies the Aztec conversion from paganism to Christianity in the 1530s. “I’ve always been a dancer in the novena,” said coordinator Rubin Trevino, a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. “Now that I’m not dancing, but watching, you can really feel the vibes. You can really sense the presence of Our Lady of Guadalupe. And watching the kids, you see them getting caught up in it.” Matachines are dancers — also called “soldiers” trained in ritual dances of indigenous Mexico. Matachines dance and host celebrations throughout the year, especially in Mexico, but the most important performance season is Advent, the weeks of December leading up to Christmas. During the novenas, which are nine nights of celebrations beginning with a rosary and ending in the matachine dance, Hispanic families crowd the backyards of host families. The mood is reverent as the group answers the elder’s call-and-response rosary — all in Spanish. Monday and Tuesday night, when temperatures hovered in the low 40s, the host families cooked huge pots of posole. Dancers and spectators spooned up the spicy red broth with pork, hominy and garlic. “You don’t have to serve dinner if you host the novena,” Trevino said. “But a lot of the

hosts do.” A holy feast is still a feast, and the soup goes like hotcakes. Though the celebrants honor and venerate Mary in the feast, only God is worshipped. Many dancers at the rosaries explained that the idea that Catholics worship Mary is a misconception. When an audience watches the matachines, they watch a story of how El Monarca, Montezuma, deserted his people. Though they begin the dance with pagan steps that acknowledge the north, south, east and west, they eventually whirl in a four-point formation that signifies the cross. On a deeper level, Trevino said, this part of
the dance represents the pull toward Christ that the Indians felt. In the dance, the matachines lure Montezuma back with the tricks of La Malinche, the Indian mistress of Hernan Cortes, the Spanish explorer who is interpreted as the devil. The dancers then tell the story of the popular coup over Cortes, and the offering of his body to the Lady of Guadalupe. The Virgin rejects the offering, declaring that the fruit of her womb — Jesus — can’t be bought with dead bodies. The nine-day feast will end Saturday night beginning with the 9 p.m. matachine procession from Hinkle and Windsor drives to Immaculate Conception Church, at 2255 N.
Bonnie Brae St. The group will sing songs of praise to the Virgin and celebrate Mass. After Mass, they will sing las mañanitas, a traditional birthday song sung to a loved one in the morning and on holidays. The matachines will dance and then share chocolate and sweet Mexican bread with parishioners. Trevino said the celebration will wind down between 4 and 5 a.m. Sunday. Magda Luna, a coordinator of the local feast, said Denton’s celebration was brought to the local parish from Laredo by a church member, Jose Valdez. Luna said more people joined the local feast this year than in the event’s history.
“We started in August, making announcements from the pulpit for people to register. More than 100 people registered. Not everyone has participated, but this is the biggest group yet,” she said. Luna said she has danced in the novena almost every year since she was 12 years old. Trevino and Luna worked with parishioners Nery Puga and Evanka Beck to organize the feast. They said the celebration has attracted a lot of people who aren’t members of the church. On a recent trip the participants took to Dallas for another Guadalupe feast, See FEAST on 16

OPENING FRIDAY The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (##1/2) In this latest fantasy epic based on C.S. Lewis’ novels, Lucy (Georgie Henley) and Edmund Pevensie (Skandar Keynes) return to Narnia with an unwilling, and sniveling, cousin Eustace (Will Poulter). They join Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes) on the ship the Dawn Treader and head toward the end of the world, but not before a series of action scenes and an army of computer-generated monsters. Decent, but not equal to the first two in the series. Rated PG, 115 minutes. — Boo Allen Hemingway’s Garden of Eden (#1/2) Steamy and overheated melodrama, adapted from a posthumously published Hemingway novel, about a writer (Jack Huston) who marries a manipulative American (Mena Suvari) in Europe, then begins an affair with their mutual girlfriend (Caterina Murino). There’s plenty of sex in this love triangle, but the characters lack appeal just as the stars lack chemistry, and the exotic landscapes alone can’t save the day. It’s not Hemingway’s finest hour, for sure. Rated R, 96 minutes. At the AMC Grapevine Mills. — Todd Jorgenson I Love You Phillip Morris (###) This decidedly offbeat, not-for-everyone farce, which has been in legal limbo, features Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor in a fact-based story about
Steven Russell (Carrey), a gay con man who leaves his family when he falls for a fellow prison inmate, Phillip Morris (McGregor). When out, Russell pulls a series of outrageous scams to finance their opulent lifestyle. Alternately homophobic, silly, politically incorrect and consistently outrageous. Rated R, 102 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas and Plano. — B.A. The Tourist (##) The pairing of Oscar winners Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie lend star power to this otherwise muddled romantic thriller about a math teacher (Depp) who crosses paths with an alluring stranger (Jolie) on a train to Venice, before he realizes that she’s somehow involved in a dangerous international scheme. The actors can’t rescue a tedious mistaken-identity script that relies on formulaic cat-andmouse plot mechanics. But at least the Italian scenery helps pass the time. Rated PG-13, 103 minutes. — T.J.
NOW PLAYING Due Date (##1/2) Two men must share a car and drive from Atlanta to Los Angeles. Of course, one is a freespirited, irresponsible flake (Zach Galifianakis), and the other (Robert Downey Jr.) is tightly wound and must be home by the end of the week when his wife (Michelle Monaghan) is scheduled to deliver their first child. Todd Phillips (The Hangover) directs the broadly humorous script filled with calculated detours and obvious personality clashes. Rated R, 95 minutes. — B.A. Burlesque (##) Christina Aguilera makes a positive first impression in her big-screen debut with a performance that’s not much of a stretch. She stars as Ali, a waitress from small-town Iowa who moves to Los Angeles in search of stardom. She happens upon a neo-burlesque club on the Sunset Strip operated by a diva (Cher) on the downside of her dancing career. With Stanley Tucci, Kristen Bell and Alan Cumming, whose acting abilities are squandered by a script that lacks surprise when the music isn’t playing. — T.J.

THE STORY OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE It was 1531 when an Aztec peasant named Juan Diego was near present-day Mexico City. Diego saw the Virgin Mary, who told him to ask the bishop to build a Catholic church for her in a valley near her apparition. Diego was moved to obey because the Virgin appeared as an Indian, not a Spaniard, and spoke Nahuatl, the Aztec language. She also revealed herself at
Tepeyac, the place of the Aztec mother-god. The bishop asked for proof. When Diego returned, he opened his cloak and roses spilled out of it. The bishop was struck by the flowers found in the dead of winter. He was also struck by the image the Virgin left of herself on Diego’s mantle. Scholars say that 8 million Mexicans converted to Catholicism from 1531 to 1538.
Today, the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is seen all over the Southwest and the rest of the country. Now seen also as a symbol of MexicanAmerican pride, the Virgin is usually surrounded by a halo of fiery light. She wears a blue, starspangled mantle, is dark-skinned and is often carried by a dark-haired angel depicted as a child.

Feast Trevino said three buses carried 165 Denton Catholics to the feast. “We hope that this will bring them into the church,” Trevino said. “We have been telling people all the way through this that we want them in the church, we want them to come to Mass regularly. We want to get them involved.” The coordinators are in talks to start a ministry called the Guadalupans, an outreach to Hispanic Catholics who can bring their heritage to the church and become devoted members. People come to the feast for different reasons. A man who gave his name as Aaron, who came to Denton with his family 14 years ago, said he came to watch the dance. When he lived in Mexico, he danced with the matachines. Here, he just watches. “In Mexico, we danced, and then the people gave us food and chocolate,” he said. Edith Soriano, a dancer and a member of Immaculate Conception, said the dancers and spectators are encouraged to pray, meditate on their lives and ask a miracle of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Matachines dance during a novena, one of nine nights of celebrations beginning with a rosary and ending in the indigenous Mexican dance, at a north Denton home.“Now that I’m not dancing, but watching, I can see the passion in the dancers for this story,” said Rubin Trevino, a coordinator for the annual event. years ago. “I was diagnosed as not being able to have a baby,” she said. “I asked for a miracle of a
child. Now I have a daughter. She’s 18 months old and she runs all over the place. The Virgin is with us in our lives.”
