et you didn’t know the Mellow Mushroom had a patio. Or live music. The downtown Denton pizza joint has had both and puts them together tonight for an acoustic set featuring emerging singersongwriter talents Megan Storie (left), Dalton Kane and Ally Barnes. If you frequent the live music nights at Banter Bistro on Oak Street, you’ll find something to like about this set. The acoustic set is open to all ages, and there is no cover, but patrons can share pizza and other menu items and enjoy drinks on the patio. Mellow Mushroom is located at 217 E. Hickory St., and the music starts at 8 p.m. For menus and more information, visit www.mellowmushroom.com /store/denton.

TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend
The band born in Denton — and now based in Austin — has been gigging long enough to have honed a sound that’s just this side of raucous and soulful to the marrow. Mingo Fishtrap has performed with Sting, Blues Traveler, George Clinton (and, yes, Mingo Fishtrap brings the funk) and Jonny Lang. Trumpet player Steve Butts unloads serious sound with saxophone steward Dan Bechdolt and supporting sax man Greg Wilson. Think the Saturday Night Live house band circa 1990, when G.E. Smith cut the brass section loose in sweet spots that lasted just 10 seconds for the television audience. Add in Roger Blevins Jr.’s husky vocals and that good old R&B baroque styling and sure-handed drumming and percussion work, and you’ve a house party. Sounds like: that magical night in the city when you take a shot at a local bar and

Any Day Now (###1/2) Alan Cumming turns in an expansive, heartbreaking performance as Rudy, a drag queen in 1979 Los Angeles. About the same time he begins a relationship with a repressed but loving lawyer, Paul (an excellent Garret Dillahunt), Rudy befriends and eventually takes custody of a 14-year-old boy with Down syndrome. The two men then fight for legal custody against the era’s unfriendly legal system. Touching, thoughtful film directed by Travis Fine and led by Cumming’s powerful turn. Not rated, 97 minutes. Martin Freeman stars as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Warner Bros.
Return of the lionhearted By Boo Allen Film Critic
Many faces from the old gang turn up in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. But to keep things interesting, director Peter Jackson also adds some fresh new creations for the continuation of the franchise he built on the novels of J.R.R. Tolkien. Fans of the Lord of the Rings trilogy will recognize much in Jackson’s new prequel, while neutral observers should be entertained enough, even if the bumpy screenplay lacks the seamless stories of its predecessors. The Hobbit sports the requisite action scenes filled with extravagant special effects, all

filmed at an innovative 48 frames a second for maximum beauty and clarity. At its core, however, the story is not about a quest for a ring, but an attempt to prove bravery and worth. In addition to Jackson’s masterful filling of his screens from top to bottom, his production
is called in to rectify the situation. Later, he calls in another man (James Gandolfini). This latest film from writer-director Andrew Dominik, based on George V. Higgins’ novel, has plenty of scenes of two guys talking in cars and bars, punctuated by

crew turns in astonishing work all around, including the flavorful costumes and colorful sets. Jackson also uses his New Zealand countryside to great advantage, spreading his creations across its vast fields. Four writers provide the screenplay from Tolkien’s novel, which is then told in flashback by the older Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm). The wordy narration harks back 60 years to when young Bilbo (Martin Freeman) is tapped for action by the wizard Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen). They join a group of 13 rowdy dwarfs, headed by legendary warrior Thorin (Richard Armitage), who doubts Bilbo from the start,
forcing him to prove his worth. The challenge paves the way for Bilbo’s current and future adventure, one headed here by a generous offering of new creatures — orcs, wargs, shapeshifters and various other nightmarish monsters. The scenario lends itself to Jackson’s penchant for CGI spectacle, particularly in a cave scene near the end when everyone involved faces off over breathtaking cliffs, rope bridges and fiery pits. He compensates for earlier drawn-out scenes by finishing with rousing battles. Since Gandalf takes a greater role here than in Lord of the Rings, McKellen has more spoken lines, enabling
bursts of brutal violence. Moderately entertaining, Tarantino-lite mug fest. Rated R, 97 minutes. — B.A. Life of Pi (##1/2) Ang Lee directs from Yann Martel’s allegorical novel about a boy, Pi Patel (Suraj Sharma), who travels with his family from
India to Canada. A shipwreck lands him in a small boat with a group of zoo animals, all quickly reduced to a tiger. Man and beast coexist, supposedly giving Zen-like life lessons to the boy, who grows into a man (Irrfan Khan) who tells the story in flash-
his perfect diction to clearly and distinctly outline the proceedings, and, particularly, the names of the players burdened with Tolkien’s unpronounceable names. Freeman’s meek persona works to his advantage while playing the mousy, diminutive Hobbit. The film is a boys’ club until Cate Blanchett makes a perfunctory, brief reappearance as Galadriel. Hugo Weaving, Christopher Lee and select others reappear, as does Andy Serkin as Gollum, an unpleasant character who ominously promises to return in future installments, all presaged by the film’s ironic, last spoken words, by Bilbo: “I do believe the worst is behind us.”

Dallas band Air Review will headline the Denton installment of “A Spune Christmas” on Friday night at Dan’s Silverleaf. The band — which includes singer and pianist Douglas Hale, left, bassist Jeff Taylor and guitarist Dragan Jakovljevic — is shown performing at Church of the Incarnation in Dallas.

s Denton’s university students finish their last final exams, Spune has a show to celebrate. (Non-students whose circadian clock is synched with the university calendar might feel like a brew and a show, too, for that matter.) Spune, a Dallas-Fort Worth production company and record label, has a goodly number of Denton acts on its roster, and it is the official booking agency for Dan’s Silverleaf. That has conspired to make Friday’s show — “A Spune Christmas” at Dan’s — a mix of Dallas and Denton bands.
Some of the acts are in their formative years (or months) — Strange Towers, Mary Walker, Biographies — and the others — Robert Gomez and Air Review — are established. Chambers, a Denton trio in the process of expanding, did its first gig at Index Fest in Dallas just a few months ago. Guitarist Judson Valdez said the indie-folk band grew out of a friendship and collaboration between himself, drummer Chase Johnson and singer and keyboardist Sam Robertson. “Our manager [and Spune booking agent] Glen Farris approached us and asked if we wanted to be on this show,” Valdez said. “It was cool because we actually got to book a couple of bands on the bill.” Valdez and Robertson knew of each other from seeing each other’s solo acts. Johnson has long backed Robertson on drums for a while now as she’s built her solo performance. Valdez was a member of Denton’s Baruch the Scribe, which disbanded over the summer. Chance Maggard, also a Baruch alumnus, is now playing with Biographies. Friday’s show will be a mix of each act’s music and Christmas songs. “We’re going to do a Rich Mullins song,” Chambers’ Valdez said. “I kind of grew up with my parents playing his music in the car, listening to it. He’s always been in my head and my heart because he reminds me of my dad.” The song, “You Gotta Get Up,” is a simple song about a child’s anticipation on Christmas morning. Valdez said mutual admiration brought the musicians together to form Chambers. “I like to work with people who have something I don’t,” he said. “I like to think I know my strengths and weaknesses, and I like to work with people who complement what I do musically. I feel like I’ve got that with Sam and Chase.” When nudged to put Chambers on the spectrum of Denton’s music scene, Valdez borrowed a term from Johnson. “Chase calls it sludge pot, because it’s slow and moody,” Valdez said. It also seems to fit Chambers’ blend of sound, from Robertson’s folk to Valdez’s experimental “noisy” solo work and Johnson’s pop and worship background. Mary Walker will release her first album, Heavy Hearts, at the show. The 21-year-old singer-songwriter is unabashed about her stylings. “My music is pop,” she said. “I think pop makes the world go around. I love a beautiful melody that gets stuck in your head, and that’s what I want my music to do.” Pop is an apt brand for the record, though it’s easy to hear the jazz influences she picked up during her freshman year at the University of North Texas, where she devoted a year to getting into the vocal jazz program. She didn’t make the pro-

gram, but instead of giving up, Walker went to shows and made music with jazz students. Walker said she contacted Farris when she wanted to book a choice date to debut the album she’s been working on for the last year and a half. He suggested Spune’s holiday concert, and she didn’t hesitate. She’ll add some Christmas songs into her set — and patrons should expect roasting chestnuts to get a vocal loop treatment. Walker said she put a lot of her resources into Heavy Hearts. She recorded most of the record with Sean P. Jones, a drummer and alumnus of UNT’s One O’clock Lab Band. She also worked with McKenzie Smith, of Denton’s Midlake, in his studio. “I wanted the album to be the best it could possibly be,” Walker said.
Walker plans to donate half of the proceeds of all CDs she sells at the Spune show to the Starkey Foundation, which provides hearing aids to children in developing countries. Walker and Valdez said they look forward to the show because it means a chance to see Dallas folk darling Air Review, as well as Gomez. Gomez has just released his latest album, Severance Songs, and backed Sarah Jaffe on Tuesday on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Strange Towers is made up of Denton music scene alumni Scott Porter, Lars Larsen, Tony Wann and Cory Ward. Biographies includes Maggard, Katie Slusarski, Michael Slusarski, Kollin Weaver, J.D. Perry and Ethan McClure. LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877. Her e-mail address is cbreeding@dentonrc.com.

Daniel Day-Lewis stars as the 16th president in director Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln. 143 minutes. — B.A. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2 (###1/2) The first four adaptations of Stephenie Meyer’s mega-best sellers were, for the most part, laughably self-serious affairs full of mopey teen angst, stilted dialogue and cheesy special effects. Now, Bill Condon (who also directed Breaking Dawn — Part 1) finally lets his freak flag fly. His final Twilight movie dares to have a little fun. Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson) are now married vampires and parents to a daughter (Mackenzie Foy). With the help of the bloodsucking Cullen clan and vampires from around the globe, they must band together with Jacob (Taylor Lautner) and his werewolf
buddies to protect the half-human, half-vampire spawn from the evil and suspicious Volturi. Rated PG-13, 115 minutes. — AP Wreck-It Ralph Disney’s new animated film mixes retro eye-candy for grown-ups and a thrilling, approachable storyline for the tykes. Shorttempered, sledgehammer-fisted bad guy Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly) journeys to Game Central Station, the gateway to every game in an arcade, to prove he can be a hero. Director Rich Moore (The Simpsons) ably manipulates the action by tantalizingly shifting the characters between game worlds. With Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch and Sarah Silverman Rated PG, 93 minutes. — HR

Lincoln (####) This is more a wonky, nuts-and-bolts lesson about the way political machinery operates than a sweeping historical epic that tries to encapsulate the entirety of the revered 16th president’s life. That was a smart move on the part of Steven Spielberg and Pulitzer-winning screenwriter Tony Kushner. Talky and intimate but also surprisingly funny, Lincoln focuses on the final four months of Abraham Lincoln’s life, and Daniel Day-Lewis inhabits the role fully. With Tommy Lee Jones, James Spader, John Hawkes and David Strathairn. Rated PG-13, 150 minutes. — AP Playing for Keeps (zero stars) It is truly baffling that all these talented, acclaimed people actually read this script and then agreed to devote their time to this movie. Judy Greer, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Uma Thurman play soccer moms shamelessly throwing themselves at George Dryer (Gerard Butler, still struggling with comedy), a oncegreat Scottish soccer star who’s now divorced and in financial straits. He moves to suburban Virginia to reconnect with his ex-wife (Jessica Biel) and their young son (Noah Lomax). Director Gabriele Muccino veers wildly between wacky high jinks and facile sentimentality. Rated PG-13, 105 minutes. — AP Red Dawn (#) The army invading the U.S. in this ill-advised remake of the campy 1984 original was changed in post-production from Chinese to North Korean. With a few snips here, a few re-dubs there, the filmmakers re-edited and re-shot, fearful of offending China. In director Dan Bradley's remake, Josh Peck, Josh Hutcherson, Adrianne Palicki and Chris Hemsworth mount an insurrection on the North Koreans controlling their hometown. The implausibility is dizzying all around. Rated PG-13, 93 minutes. — AP Rise of the Guardians A very odd assortment of mythical childhood figures — the fearsome team of Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, the Sandman and Jack Frost — are thrown together as an unlikely set of action heroes in DreamWorks Animation’s attractively designed but overly busy and derivative mishmash of kid-friendly elements. Jack (voiced by Chris Pine) is hard-pressed by a muscular Santa, known as North (Alec Baldwin), to join in the battle against a diabolical figure (Jude Law) who threatens to throw Earth into darkness and provide nightmares to kids everywhere. Rated PG, 97 minutes. — The Hollywood Reporter Skyfall (###1/2) Daniel Craig returns as James Bond in the 23rd film based on 007’s exploits. Britain’s MI6 comes under attack, with M (Judi Dench) as the chief target. Bond finds and brings back the villain (Javier Bardem), but that just sets the stage for further action and adventure. Between the action sequences, director Sam Mendes takes time to build a personal drama that distinguishes this Bond film from its predecessors. Rated PG-13,
