culptor Cynthia Mitchell is adding her home studio to the growing list of neighborhood art spaces that host fall sales. The Laurel Hill Artists Holiday Sale is an annual draw for shoppers in southwest Denton. Miller will open her space, Miriam’s Studio, on Saturday and Sunday in central Denton. “I’m going to start having an annual sale at this time of year and in the spring,” said Mitchell, who teaches fine arts at McKinney High School. She lives and makes art in Denton at her home at 1512 Panhandle St. The neighborhood has long attracted the city’s artists and musicians. Mitchell said the inaugural sale will have a lot of handcrafted jewelry and a range of ceramics — clay boxes, spoons and casserole dishes. Other decorative, handmade items will be available, too.

Concert brings brash drums, warm hearts together

B

ackside Pick plans to give the Friday night Hailey’s Club crowd every reason in the world to dance.

TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend

Rocky Ottley, the band’s guitarist and vocalist, said the local funk band mean to put some swing in the Holiday Formal and Toy Drive at the downtown Denton club. They share the bill with Denton rock-ska outfit Informant and the Black and Blues, a funk-blues group out of Fort Worth. Ottley said Backside Pick will bring some heft to the stage. Drummers Tim Macon and Mike Hodges will each hold forth on their own drum kits, with Ryan Hagler on bass, Nick Groesch and Austin Byrd on keyboards, and a two-man horn section, with Ben Bohorquez on tenor sax and Evan Weiss on trumpet. The heft isn’t merely in size, Ottley said, but in sound. “A lot of our guys are from the Grammy-nominated [University of North Texas] One O’clock Lab Band,” he said. Backside Pick started making music four years ago. The group has put out an EP, I Do, and the 2009 full-length album Higher Place. “We have songs, and our songs are kind of a framework for what we do on the stage,” Ottley said. “It’s never really quite the same show twice. We do a lot of improv-

We try to keep everything fresh and new.” When the group first came together, members played charts. Over time, the band has shifted to a solo-oriented sound, ditching the charts in favor of following wherever the chemistry leads them. Ottley said the band’s funky sound took on a sort of ferocity when the band recruited Macon as a second drummer. “It’s funkier and definitely something you can dance to,” Ottley said. “This was straight from Tim’s mouth: ‘It’s hard to capture what you can do with two drum kits

on a recording.’” It’s apparent the drums drive the music. “Tim and Mike, they’re playing locomotive for sure,” Ottley said. The Holiday Formal is a nonsmoking event, so those who want to get decked out for a true, formal gala should dress to the nines. Hailey’s won’t turn away the skinnyjeans-and-hoodies crowd, however. Cover is $5, $7 for those younger than 21, and free for anyone who brings a new or gently used toy valued at $5. Doors open at 9 p.m. Friday. Hailey’s is located at 122 W. 1. BOOTS She’ll be ready for a white Christmas and the first spring gully-washer in these fashionable waterproof cowboy boots from Howe Unique, which specializes in artistic, affordable home decor, gifts and women’s accessories. Five Howe family members own and operate this latest addition to the downtown business area, which opened at the end of November. The store’s merchandise is intended to appeal to a wide variety and includes that of several Denton artists. “We wanted to feature local artists and make their work accessible to the community,” said co-owner Julie Howe, who added that featuring Denton artists was part of the store’s original concept. Howe Unique also offers free gift-wrapping services to its customers throughout the year. Howe Unique, 221 W. Oak St. 940-891-0751.

2. SMELL-GOOD, TASTE-GOOD STUFF An assortment of perishables is the solution for that someone who has too much stuff and doesn’t want more. She’ll know she’s special and will smell good too when you give her “Diva,” one of several popular fragrance product lines made by Tyler Candle Co., located in — you guessed it — Tyler, and available at the Courthouse Collection. Products can be purchased separately, so you get to choose whether to spend a little or a lot. Pictured here: Glamorous Wash laundry detergent (medium), $18; room spray, $9.95; hand cream, $6.50; Glamorous Home dishwashing detergent liquid, $13.50; and a small candle, $7. Another option? Visit the kitchen and gourmet shop in the back for ready-made mixes, jams and jellies, rubs, dips and specialty coffee beans. Courthouse Collection and Country Kitchen City Cooks, 111 W. Hickory St. 940-381-1956.

3. ORNAMENTS What’s not too big, has no calories, is light on the pocketbook and guaranteed to please? A holiday ornament — the perfect one-size-fits-all present. It’s almost impossible to have too many, which makes it great for teachers and ideal for a gift exchange or to have on hand for that unexpected drop-in guest. Garden Gate is the go-to place for all things Christmas. In addition to ornaments, you’ll find festive table decorations, knickknacks and home decor galore. If you’re not in a holiday spirit before you step into store, you most assuredly will be by the time you leave. Ornament prices start at $5. Garden Gate, 121 N. Elm St. 940-566-9090.

4. RING Whether you’re just about to pop the question or made your move years ago, you’ll sure to please her with elegant and unique jewelry from Amyx. “We offer jewelry that ranges from vintage and antique to modern, and everything we have is on consignment,” said co-owner and gemologist Joe Amyx, who assesses the quality before the jewelry is priced. Regular markdowns are taken every two weeks, which lets the merchandise find its own market value at anywhere from $15 to $15,000. Amyx does not sell costume jewelry, only pieces made of precious metals (platinum, gold or sterling silver) or with genuine stones. Featured here is an 18K white gold ring with a 1.55-carat sapphire and .60-carat total, VS2 clarity, G-color diamonds, originally priced at $2,750, reduced to $1,925. Amyx Fine Jewelry, 222 W. Hickory St. 101, 940-383-AMYX (2699), www.amyxfinejewelry.com

8. PEPPER MILL 7. PLATTER Nothing says 5. GIFT CERTIFICATE Guys are notoriously difficult to buy for — where does one begin? The ever-popular gift certificate is always appreciated and doesn’t have to be wrapped. And what man doesn’t love a clean car? Lone Star Car Wash offers everything from its basic car wash for $10 to a deluxe treatment for a large vehicle through its detail shop for $145. Owners Reggie and Lisa Hill recommend the $45 Express Wax Special for any size car or truck. Many other local businesses, such as spas, restaurants, salons and health clubs offer gift certificates for their services, sometimes at a discount. Just ask. Lone Star Car Wash, 900 Dallas Drive. 940-565-9274.

fashionistas will love these distinctly Denton wrist cuffs for both men and women, made from leather and vinyl records by two local artists. They’re reasonably priced, from $14 to $35, and are available exclusively at 2nd Street on the Square. Sift through the racks at this boutique for new, reconstructed, recycled and vintage clothes. The men’s selection is worth noting, as well as gamine jeans, affordable art and handmade jewelry. “Supporting small business at this time is really important,” said co-owner Jennifer Boncyk. And the store does its part for Denton’s arts scene, selling local art and playing music by local musicians in-store.

love like homemade, but forget the potholder idea. Time to Kiln makes it easy, even for the artistically challenged, to make something the giver would be proud to gift to a loved one. They supply everything you need — plenty of ceramic bisque pieces from which to choose, paint, brushes, stencils and books full of ideas — but if you want it by Christmas, you’d best get busy. “The baking, firing and curing process takes several days,” says co-owner Chris Price, so the painting must be completed by this weekend for pickup by Dec. 23. Pictured here: a collaboration between a 6-year-old and an adult, which includes combination of footprints, a handprint and stenciled lettering. Also available: ready-made, non-personalized gifts.

Personalized gifts are always welcome — especially practical ones, such as this custom-designed engraved wooden wine bottle pepper mill for $45. Monty Naylor, owner of M.C. Naylor Co., offers laser engraving as well as advertising and promotional products from his home-based business. Naylor can design graphics from scratch, or the customer can provide him with a ready-made JPEG or BMP image. Other ideas? Monogrammed wine glasses and drinking glasses, $12 apiece; wine tool set, $45; personalized pen and pencil set, $25; photo album, $55; or pocket knife, $16. These items “are stocked and good for the lastminute gift idea,” said Naylor. M.C. Naylor Co., montynay@gmail. com. 940-368-8034, www.onefoot engrave.com

PETS There’s nothing 9. GIFTS FOR KIDDOS 10. more adorable than a cuddly kitten

Kids of all ages can tap into their inner artist with one of four silkscreened silicone mats for $27, available for purchase at Addison June, a children’s boutique on the south side of the Square. Pry the kiddos’ hands from their video games, hand them some dry erase markers and let the coloring begin. They’ll be transfixed, filling in the designs before you wipe the mat clean with a damp cloth so they can start all over again. Looking more specifically for an infant or toddler present? You can’t go wrong with the inflatable Howdy Bouncing Rubber Cow, $35, in pink, blue, brown and white, or the Constructive Eating Set for $15, with the matching set of three eating utensils for $18. or a floppy puppy topped with a bright bow. But what happens after the holidays are over and the dog soils the carpet and gets into the trash and the kitten scratches the end of the sofa? Shelters all over the country are filled with unwanted animals that were someone’s cute gift at one time but became an inconvenience to their owners. Before you take the big step to add a furry friend to your family, take the time to consider whether you are prepared for the $110-$120 adoption fee, the altered lifestyle, the long-term commitment and the expense of food and medical bills. But if you and your family are ready, then there are plenty of dogs and cats ready and waiting at the Denton Animal Shelter who would love a forever home. Denton Animal Shelter, 300 S. OPENING FRIDAY How Do You Know (##1/2) Writerdirector James L. Brooks (As Good As It Gets) returns with another of his character-driven romantic comedies about the interconnected relationships between a top softball player (Reese Witherspoon), a smug baseball star (Owen Wilson), a down-onhis-luck corporate executive (Paul Rudd) and his crooked father (Jack Nicholson). It’s well-acted, but the meandering script feels more familiar than fresh by Brooks’ standards. Rated PG-13, 121 minutes. — Todd Jorgenson Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (###) Quirky horror comedy from Finland about an archaeological dig that accidentally unearths Santa Claus, which leads the citizens of a snowy town to suspect the worst when its children start disappearing soon thereafter. Eventually Santa’s elves try to come to his rescue. The film’s dry and subversive sense of humor is its chief strength, even if it turns more soft than edgy. Still, it’s an ambitious and darkly original fairy tale. Rated R, 84 minutes. At the Texas Theatre. — T.J. The Tempest (##1/2) Shakespeare supplies the sublime words, and Julie Taymor contributes the outlandish visuals in this stylized version of the Bard’s play. Director Taymor uses contemporary special effects to show the magical prowess of Prospero, here Prospera (Helen Mirren), the wizardly ruler of an isolated island who takes revenge on those stranded after the tempest. Unfortunately, Taymor goes for broad laughs with her cast, which includes comedian Russell Brand. It is not the stuff dreams are made of. At the Angelika Dallas. Rated PG-13, 110 minutes. — Boo Allen Tron: Legacy Rebellious Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) is haunted by the mysterious disappearance of his father (Jeff Bridges, reprising his role from 1982’s Tron), a man once known as the world's leading video game developer. When Sam investigates a strange signal sent from the old Flynn's Arcade — a signal that could only come from his father — he finds himself pulled into a digital world where his father has been trapped for 20 years. With Olivia Wilde and Michael Sheen. Rated PG,

accomplish the most difficult feat asked of their craft, that of making us believe they are real and forgetting they are actors playing parts. Their characters’ growing mutual affection rises naturally and believably. In crafting his film, Hooper sticks to recognized superlatives, throwing in Shakespeare when possible, filling his soundtrack with Mozart and Beethoven, and casting his film with British cream in every minor role, such as Derek Jacobi, Claire Bloom, Jennifer Ehle, and, in a weak link, an eye-rolling, unforgivably hammy Timothy Spall as Winston Churchill. Danny Cohen’s pristine cinematography breathes life into the drab grays and muted colors of Jenny Beavan’s costume designs, while director Hooper also graces the somber proceedings with Alexandre Desplat’s accurate mood music. ometimes, it’s not good to be king. Take George VI, the subject of The King’s Speech, a sparkling new film from director Tom Hooper. George VI (Colin Firth), like Richard III before him, also became king feeling he was “sent before my time into this breathing world, scarce half made up.” George — “Bertie” to his family — did not suffer from Richard’s bloodlust, but from a debilitating stammer. Shakespearean references come easy to The King’s Speech, with ample quotations from the Bard complementing the true story involving the death of a king, the crowning and subsequent abdication of another, and the following coronation of one who felt unworthy to assume the mantle. Unlike Richard III, Bertie never wanted the crown, fearing that as sovereign he would be forced into doing what he

most feared: making speeches. He had plenty of time as the Duke of York, second in line after his brother the Prince of Wales (Guy Pearce), to know his limitations. But when their father, George V (Michael Gambon), becomes ill, threatening to thrust the prince onto the throne and elevating the duke in line of succession, Bertie knows he must seek help for his halting speech. His wife Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter) secretly visits Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush), a supposed expert at working such cures, but one without a med-

ical credentials or distinguished qualifications. Plus, he’s Australian and has highly unorthodox methods. Over time, the would-be king and his therapist perform their laborious, montage-friendly exercises, as outlined in David Seidler’s perceptive and literate script. In Seidler’s witty yet insightful dialogues, Logue challenges his patient, forcing him to reveal some of the early, and more recent, humiliations that may have contributed to Bertie’s stammer-causing insecurities. Over time, and the course of the film, the two form an unlikely bond of trust, as much as a commoner can ever become familiar with one who wears the crown. Hooper never overplays the relationship, but paints both men as flawed humans — Logue as the domineering martinet, confident of his methods, and Bertie as the insecure royal accustomed to living in others’ shadows. As actors, Firth and Rush

MOVIES Continued from Page 10 126 minutes. Yogi Bear (##) Kids might enjoy this frenetic 3-D adaptation of the classic cartoon, which places CGI bears in a live-action story about a greedy politician who wants to close Jellystone Park just before its 100year anniversary. It’s up to mischievous Yogi (voice of Dan Aykroyd) and Boo-Boo (Justin Timberlake) to save the day. The sight gags and one-liners are sporadically amusing, but the script proves that the material isn’t meant to be stretched to feature length. Rated PG, 80 minutes. — T.J.

Christian Bale, left, and Mark Wahlberg play halfbrothers focused on boxing in The Fighter.

NOW PLAYING Black Swan (###) Natalie Portman stars as Nina, a ballerina chosen to star in a new production of Swan Lake. Her mother (Barbara Hershey) and her ballet instructor (Vincent Cassel) both seem more than a little off-balance, until Nina too starts heading over the edge. Director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler) delivers the unusual hybrid horror-ballet film. Entertaining and strange. Rated R, 103 minutes. — B.A. Burlesque (##) Christina Aguilera makes a positive first impression in her big-screen debut with a performance that’s not much of a stretch. She stars as Ali, a waitress from small-town Iowa who moves to Los Angeles in search of stardom. She happens upon a neo-burlesque club on the Sunset Strip operated by a diva (Cher) on the downside of her dancing career. With Stanley Tucci, Kristen Bell and Alan Cumming, whose acting abilities are squandered by a script that lacks surprise when the music isn’t playing. — T.J. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (##1/2) In this latest fantasy epic based on C.S. Lewis’ novels, Lucy (Georgie Henley) and Edmund Pevensie (Skandar Keynes) return to Narnia with an unwilling, and sniveling, cousin Eustace (Will Poulter). They join Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes) on the ship the Dawn Treader and head toward the end of the world, but not before a series of action scenes and an army of computer-generated monsters. Decent, but not equal to the first two in the series. Rated PG, 115 minutes. — B.A. Due Date (##1/2) Two men must share a car and drive from Atlanta to Los Angeles. Of course, one is a free-spirited, irresponsible flake (Zach Galifianakis), and the other (Robert Downey Jr.) is tightly wound and must be home by the end of the week when his wife (Michelle Monaghan) is scheduled to deliver their first child. Todd Phillips (The Hangover) directs the broadly humorous script filled with calculated detours and obvious personality clashes. Rated R, 95 minutes. — B.A. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (###1/2) Director David Yates deftly directs the

ilms about boxing almost always lack the punch of the sport itself. Yet filmmakers have invariably been drawn to it despite an inability to re-create its excitement, visceral thrills and undeniable barbarism. In The Fighter, director David O. Russell looks for some narrative thread outside the ring to go along with the requisite fight scenes. But he fails to find a consistent conflict needed to distinguish his movie. He chronicles much of the turmoil found in the lives of his main characters, but then does little to convey why we should ever care about

beginning of the end of the Potter series. Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) go on a grim journey to find the horcruxes that keep Harry’s nemesis, Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes), alive. Absorbing, disturbing and not for young children. Rated PG-13, 146 minutes. — Lucinda Breeding

The Fighter Rated R, 114 minutes. Opens Friday.

them. This personal disinterest explains the lack of engagement with the fact-based Fighter. The flawed, mostly unlikable main characters are half-brothers Mickey Ward (Mark Wahlberg) and Dicky Eklund (Christian Bale). But Russell never settles into a single dramatic focus, delivering portraits of a dysfunctional family marred fur-

Megamind (##) Visually extravagant but narratively flat 3-D animated superhero comedy about an insecure supervillain (voiced by Will Ferrell) whose attempts at world domination are always thwarted by a caped rival (Brad Pitt). Once a new villain arrives on the scene, Megamind realizes his powers might be better used for good. There are

ther by sibling rivalry, a cliche-ridden Rocky-esque tale of recovered promise, a thrown-in romance, and the inevitable, overworked, buildup-to-the-big-event sports saga. Once a promising boxer, older brother Dicky now trains Mickey, but only when Dicky’s not destroying himself with crack. Mickey’s life also looks a dead end, hindered further by his loyalty to his brother and their domineering mother (Melissa Leo). Only the spark of a romance with a local barmaid (Amy Adams, playing adequately against type) and the promise of future boxing successes give any hope for

some amusing sight gags and oneliners, but the predictable story pales in comparison to Despicable Me, for example. Rated PG, 95 minutes. — T.J. Love and Other Drugs (##) Intriguing parts never make a satisfying whole in this 1990s romantic satire about a brash young Viagra salesman (Jake Gyllenhaal) whose

‘The Fighter’ can’t land a narrative hit

Mickey. Three writers have assembled these elements of Mickey’s desultory life, which Russell juggles erratically. Russell does, however, successfully draw a Dickensian portrait of Lowell, Mass., casting locals and filming in the blighted area. When on-screen, Dicky sucks the life from the film. But Bale’s seemingly awardfocused, showy performance, and his emaciated frame only look accurate if judged by the clips of the real-life Dicky seen in the closing credits. BOO ALLEN is an awardwinning film critic for the Denton Record-Chronicle.

attitude is placed in check by a troubled painter (Anne Hathaway) dealing with a medical condition. The latest from director Ed Zwick (Legends of the Fall) has a lively pace and strong performances, but it’s also wildly uneven, with several frustrating shifts in tone that keep the audience at an emotional distance. Rated R, 112 minutes. — T.J.
