Trebuchet album weaves orchestral maneuvers with hard rock cred
D
enton’s Trebuchet plants one foot firmly into the 1990s-influenced grunge/alternative rock sound and the other into the borderlands of metal with Said A to B, the full-length follow-up to the band’s split EP with the Phuss.

“We wear our influences kind of on our sleeves,” said Justin Hawkins, the architect of the band’s vocal melodies and lyrics — part of what makes the local band a serious affair. “All of our parents listened to classic rock, and we grew up listening to classic rock. But we also came of age during the 1990s grunge rock. And in the 1990s, there were a lot of good bands coming up in the D-FW scene. One Ton Records was a big influence for us, a big deal for a lot of us.” Said A to B includes eight songs, but with most of them clocking in at more than 4 minutes, it’s a meaty record that feels complete. “Potentiometer” begins with a slow metal-worthy beat and low guitar licks. Were the tempo doubled, it might be a dead ringer for a Metallica chorus, but the tempo is blunted by a deliberate pace and Hawkins’ vocals are at their most reminiscent of the Toadies’ Vaden Todd Lewis. (Hawkins actually taught Lewis’ daughter when he was working at School of Rock in Fort Worth. “Yeah, she’s awesome. She’s loud,” he said.) Hawkins’ pipes can soar with the same insistent grittiness in the throat. And yet instead of sounding disordered or dangerous, Hawkins’ lyrics are more personal and regretful. Then, at the start of “O.L.H.” Hawkins harmonizes with himself in a run that is vintage Freddie Mercury. What makes the album such a good bet for metal fans isn’t its degree of hardness, but the orchestral way chief songwriter

Trebuchet rhythm guitarist Keith Naylor digs into a line of music. The Denton band releases its album Said A to B, on Do For It Records, with a show Friday at Hailey’s Club. Dustin Fleming composes. In “Potentiometer,” the lead guitar could easily double for violin or harp, and the rhythm guitar chips in the way wind instruments often do to supplement strings. In more than one song, John Yett’s bass adopts the resonant, space-taking character of a pipe organ. It’s the drumming that anchors the band in the rock zone. “A lot of the songs on this album are like medleys, almost,” Hawkins said. Indeed, most of the songs feel like they unfold in multiple movements. “It’s funny, because I feel like on our old records we sounded a lot harder,” he said. “This record, we’re more laid-back.” The band wrote the songs just after the release of the split EP, and Hawkins said they were ready to polish them about a year ago. An evening in the basement of Andy’s Bar on the Square produced a conversation about recording the album in a loft space where Keith Naylor, the rhythm guitarist, was living with his girlfriend before moving out. Photographer Marcus Laws and videographer Patrick Flaherty rented the spot as a studio and let Trebuchet
record over four days. “Our days were long. They started at 11 p.m. and went until 5 a.m.,” Hawkins said. “We had to get it done. That space is so amazing, sound-wise.” Fleming burned mixes, passed them out to the band, and each musician took “really, really detailed notes,” Hawkins said. Fleming revised the mixes using those notes. When Said A to B drops on Friday, Hawkins said he expects the track “Lies and Delusions” to define the record for the band. It does build, back off to drums, busy bass picking and a few yelps from the guitar, before building to the inevitable crash of sound. In spots, the song takes a side trip to British folk-rock interludes, yet the sound never feels slapped together. Each movement is intentional and meaningful. “‘Lies and Delusions’ is the pinnacle of the sound, the pinnacle of the composition we were after. That’s the one that I’m completely ecstatic about,” Hawkins said. “First and foremost, we really aren’t the radio model band, as much as that might be to the detriment of the bands in this town. We
want to tell the story of the songs we write.” How to get it: Said A to B is available on limited-edition vinyl with a screen-printed cover, plus a band sticker and a download card, for $20. The record will be available at Mad World Records and Recycled Books Records CDs on the Square, and at Good Records in Dallas. A download card, available on www.trebuchet band.com, is $8. The record will be available on iTunes. Sounds like: the Toadies under the influence of System of a Down and Lift to Experience. The intensity of Trebuchet pairs nicely with Pink Floyd or Alice in Chains. They’re with the band: Bobak Lotfipour, drums; Dustin Fleming, lead guitar and sound engineer; John Yett, bass; Keith Naylor, rhythm guitar; and Justin Hawkins, lead vocals and guitar. Details: The Virgin Wolves, Trebuchet, Mothership and the Phuss play Friday night at Hailey’s Club, 122 W. Mulberry St. Doors open at 7 p.m. Cover is $5 for ages 21 and older, $10 for those younger than 21. — Lucinda Breeding

The Creation of Autumn is a digital photo print, 40 inches by 70 inches, by Denton artist and University of North Texas professor David Blow. The image takes information from a photograph and reforms it to suggest the infinity symbol. Blow has long used his art to meditate on how humans make sense of the natural world. UNT on the Square presents a retrospective of Blow’s work though Feb. 9.
The world all around U
Artist’s works consider how humans view nature
NT on the Square has lent its wall space to University of North Texas College of Visual Arts and Design faculty member David Blow. The exhibit runs through Feb. 9 and is a retrospective of the artist’s three decades at the university. Blow uses digital photogra-
phy to entice the viewer to look closely at the natural world. Over the years, Blow has acted on the unique human impulse to make order out of the entropy of nature. He has used the image of a bird in flight to create a pattern one might find in fabric or wallpaper. He’s carefully trimmed a part of a photograph, then cre-
ated a mirror image and merged the two in a single work. The suggestion is that humankind hasn’t successfully escaped the unpredictable (but beautiful) architecture of nature. Rather, we borrow the hard and soft, the spare and luxurious aspects found in nature, and mold them into
objects that are integrated into the oh-so-affected exercise of design. Blow has carefully constructed images using the raw material he’s found in the places where civilization ends and where what writer Tony Kushner calls “the fussy vegetable preference” for light and soil begins.
UNT on the Square is open today from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 8 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. The gallery, located at 109 N. Elm St., will be closed for winter break starting Saturday, reopening on Jan. 2. For more information, visit http://untonthesquare.unt.edu.

Take two of the most irritating actors working today and have them play two even more obnoxious characters. Then put them in a car for a cross-country road trip and it adds up to The Guilt Trip. within nauseating sequences causing supreme discomfort. The Guilt Trip is the type of movie in which when Joyce (Barbra Streisand) says, “It never snows in Tennessee,” you breaking computer animation tells the story of a girl named Boo, who finds herself in the scream-processing factory. But the soft and cuddly monsters who work there (voiced by John Goodman and Billy Crystal) turn out to be scared of her. They get over it and help Boo get back to her world. OPENING FRIDAY Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away Tumbling, dancing, high-wire magic, in story form, from the artists of Cirque du Soleil. In 3-D. know that, in the next scene, she and her son Andy (Seth Rogen) will be driving through a snowstorm in Tennessee. It is the type of movie that has Joyce warning Andy never to pick up a hitchhiker, which means you know she will pick up a hitchhiker. It is the type of movie whose idea of humor is Joyce seeing a neon sign saying “topless” and thinking it says “tapas.” As Andy, the limited Rogen plays dutiful son to Streisand’s overbearing, non-stop Joyce, a
son-and-mother team driving from the East Coast to San Francisco, never mind why. She never stops talking, and much of it is in the form of correcting her son’s behavior while also dishing dirt about sensitive subjects, such as his sex life and his failed relationships. It’s a toss-up as to who’s more uncomfortable: Andy or the viewing audience. Along the way, Andy stops to pitch various outlets in his attempt to sell a new organic
cleaner he has invented, all opportunities for Joyce to embarrass her son further. Every predictable stop along the way is calculated to highlight Joyce shaming Andy, and she does it so often it’s understandable when he finally erupts, an emotional outburst paving the way for Mom’s selfserving speech on how much she has sacrificed. Such humor-by-discomfort quickly wears thin, leaving viewers dangerously carsick.
from Tom Cruise that remind us that he is indeed a movie star. OK, so maybe Cruise doesn’t exactly resemble the Reacher of British novelist Lee Child’s books, but Christopher McQuarrie’s film moves so fluidly and with such confidence, it’ll suck you in from the start. Besides being a mind teaser, Jack Reacher offers the muscular thrills of a ’70s action flick, including fight scenes and a thrilling, prolonged car chase through the streets of downtown Pittsburgh. With Rosamund Pike, Robert Duvall and Werner Herzog. Rated PG-13, 130 minutes. — The Associated Press This is 40 (##1/2) Theoretically, this moderately funny domestic comedy follows two characters, Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann), a few years after their appearance in writer-director Judd Apatow’s
Knocked Up. Here, Apatow seems to be revealing all, milking his own life for its crotch gags and bathroom humor as the couple approaches their 40th birthdays. Apatow and Mann’s two daughters even appear as Pete and Debbie’s offspring. Rated R, 134 minutes. — B.A. Rust and Bone (###) Jacques Audiard co-wrote and directed this intense French-language drama about a whale trainer (Marion Cotillard) who loses both her legs in an accident. Eventually, she meets and begins a relationship with a reckless Belgian exile (Matthias Schoenaerts). He seems to make a living doing odd jobs and fighting in brutal street warfare. The film benefits more from two naturalistic performances than from any believable or involving narrative. Rated R, 120

She plays a physician stuck in early 1980s East Germany. She labors under some kind of subtle scrutiny by the secret police, the Stasi, enough so that she refuses friendship or even camaraderie from her co-workers until finally jolted into action. Unfortunately Barbara remains as cold to audiences as she is to everyone else. Germany’s Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language film. Rated PG-13, 105 minutes. Holiday lights, camera, action!
11 Head out to the cineplex to ride out the Christmas lull
By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor
y now you’ve noticed how things in Denton have slowed down. Chilled out. Taken a break. The city is officially in the grand winter period known as the college break. Finals are over and grads have gotten their degrees. What to do with the unstructured time abounding? (And working folks, don’t pretend like you’re dashing from meeting to presentation to quarter four cleanups. You’re very likely planning the next quarter’s projects while playing solitaire or computer golf.) This is the time of year that cinema was made for. A crop of movies — for the family and for the grownups — is still at the local multiplex. And you? You’ve got the hours to burn and a good excuse to feast on movie popcorn. Our Christmas week movie guide can help you land on a title that fits your situation. Have family in with all the kids? Check out Dreamworks’ latest creation. Sick of the holiday cheer and joy to the world and sugar plums? There’s a musical that will make you think thankfully of that temperature-controlled house you gripe about.

Rise of the Guardians
North (voiced by Alec Baldwin) — you may know him as Santa Claus — employs a pair of Yetis to help him gather together children’s last and best hopes in Rise of the Guardians.
Rated PG, 97 minutes. Now playing. This bonanza from Dreamworks didn’t generate the buzz of DisneyPixar’s Brave, but it’s got everything a family is looking for in an afternoon with all ages. Children will identify mostly with the central character, Jack Frost (voiced by Chris Pine), an impish, sil-
ver-haired, elfin-eared youth who gets his jollies by freezing water and chilling the air in ways that surprise humans. Then one day, a pair of fluffy Yetis nab him and take his to see North — a.k.a. Santa (Alec Baldwin). North has brought the Sandman (Jude Law), the
Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher), Jack Frost and Bunny (Hugh Jackman) together to save children from the worst monster anyone has known. An adventure ensues. Dreamworks employs its signature sharp animation, clever gags and Aplus screenwriters (David Lindsay-
Abaire adapting William Joyce’s book) to dazzling effect. Christmas Day relevance: The scariest monsters are the monsters we conjure, but hope and courage can overcome monsters. Good for: fans of Rankin/Bass’ most charming stop-motion animated
films, and those who’d like to fit Santa’s sleigh with rocket power. Not for: those who are sick to death of noisy holiday-time movies for children. Expect a racket.
The longest-running musical on Broadway will be on the big screen starting Christmas Day. Based on the beefy novel by Victor Hugo, Les Miserables tells the story of a Frenchman Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), who is imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread, and his escape from crushing punishment that doesn’t fit the crime. Dogged by the bitter Inspector Javert (Russell Crowe), Valjean becomes the keeper of little Cosette, taken from her sickly, prostituted mother, Fantine (Anne Hathaway). Cosette grows into a sweet, beautiful young lady (Amanda Seyfried) who catches the eye of young revolutionary Marius (Eddie Redmayne). As the beleaguered French populace grows more angry and agitated against the excesses of the aristocracy, Marius is torn between his new identity and the
affections of his friend Eponine (Samantha Barks). Tom Hooper directs the epic, and retains the celebrated score by ClaudeMichel Schonberg and the English translation by Herbert Kretzmer. Families who frequent local musicals and operas are plum viewers for the film, as well as musical theater fans who have been in a lather over the film — both in anticipation and in horror at certain directorial decisions. Christmas Day relevance: Transformation can be political, but it’s love that frees us from our bondage and makes us new. Good for: literature buffs and epic movie lovers. Not for: people who like their films to have happy endings. Continued on Page 12

Warner Bros.
From left, Fili (Dean O’Gorman), Kili (Aidan Turner), Dori (Mark Hadlow), Nori (Jed Brophy) and Bifur (William Kircher) gear up for adventure in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Rated PG-13, 169 minutes. Now playing. Sci-fi and fantasy nerds have been in ecstasy for the last month. New Zealand director Peter Jackson returns to Middle Earth, this time to show us what happened before the battle of Helm’s Deep in Lord of the Rings. What happens is this: A humble hobbit named Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) is tapped by the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) to journey all the way to the Lonely Mountain. His assignment is to join a band of lionhearted dwarves and
plan to reclaim the hidden treasure from the dragon Smaug. Sounds simple, but it’s a long journey to get the diminutive miners back to their shafts, and the way is littered with danger and temptation. Bilbo, an uncle to the famous Frodo, is fit for the task because he’s got a cunning mind and a pure heart. But will his heart be corrupted? Christmas Day relevance: J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories are about the eternal wrestling match between ultimate good
and ultimate evil. Things always get interesting when the stakes include God’s creation. Good for: costume-play addicts, the Dungeons & Dragon set, and disciples of the incomparable Christian novelist and Middle Earth creator J.R.R. Tolkien. Not for: movie buffs who are weary of watching white guys save the world. Young children might get bored by the film’s length or frightened during intense scenes.
Life of Pi Rated PG, 127 minutes. Now playing.
20th Century Fox
Life of Pi stars Suraj Sharma as Pi Patel, an Indian teen lost at sea with only a tiger for company.
Pi Patel is the teenage son of a zookeeper. When his parents decide to take some of the animals from their zoo in Pondicherry, India, and move to Canada, Pi prepares for a long haul on a huge freighter. Then, a shipwreck. Pi is adrift on a 26-foot lifeboat with a menagerie: a zebra, a hyena, an orangutan and a 450-pound Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. The viewer watches the gripping journey across the Pacific, while a boy and a tiger learn to live in the same cramped quarters. Pi has time to consider his past, and his future. He encounters his deepest and best self under the canopy of the night sky and just above a world of water. What he makes of his life on land will
be the fruit of his solitary time at sea. Christmas Day relevance: Novelist Yann Martel wrote Life of Pi as a parallel story about his own experience of existential transformation. He wrote Pi as a Hindu boy who begins to practice Christianity and Islam as a way to express a love of God. Good for: animal lovers, fans of newly minted myths, and movie buffs who are tired of watching films about white guys saving the world (thanks to a fine cast of established and emerging Indian talent). Also, those who obsessively study Edgar Allan Poe. Not for: people with pea-sized hearts of stone. People who aren’t so keen on religious universalism.
Lincoln (####) This is more a wonky, nuts-and-bolts lesson about the way political machinery operates than a sweeping historical epic that tries to encapsulate the entirety of the revered 16th president’s life. That was a smart move on the part of Steven Spielberg and Pulitzer-winning screenwriter Tony Kushner. Talky and intimate but also surprisingly funny, Lincoln focuses on the final four months of Abraham Lincoln’s life, and Daniel Day-Lewis inhabits the role fully. With Tommy Lee Jones, James Spader, John Hawkes and David Strathairn. Rated PG-13, 150 minutes. — AP Playing for Keeps (zero stars) Judy Greer, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Uma Thurman play soccer moms shamelessly throwing themselves at George Dryer (Gerard Butler), a oncegreat Scottish soccer star who’s now divorced and in financial straits. Rated PG-13, 105 minutes. — AP Skyfall (###1/2) Daniel Craig returns as James Bond in the 23rd film based on 007’s exploits. Britain’s MI6 comes under attack, with M (Judi Dench) as the chief target. Bond finds and brings back the villain (Javier Bardem), but that just sets the stage for further action and adventure. Between the action sequences, director Sam Mendes takes time to build a personal drama that distinguishes this Bond film from its predecessors. Rated PG-13, 143 minutes. — B.A. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2 (###1/2) The final Twilight movie dares to have a little fun. Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson) are now married vampires and parents to a daughter (Mackenzie Foy). With the help of the bloodsucking Cullen clan and vampires from around the globe, they must band together with Jacob (Taylor Lautner) and his werewolf buddies to protect the half-human, half-vampire spawn from the evil and suspicious Volturi. Rated PG-13, 115 minutes. — AP Wreck-It Ralph Disney’s new animated film mixes retro eye-candy for grown-ups and a thrilling, approachable storyline for the tykes. Shorttempered, sledgehammer-fisted bad guy Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly) journeys to Game Central Station, the gateway to every game in an arcade, to prove he can be a hero. Director Rich Moore (The Simpsons) ably manipulates the action by tantalizingly shifting the characters between game worlds. With Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch and Sarah Silverman. Rated PG, 93 minutes. — The Hollywood Reporter
