ake a break from fa-la-laing and instead chill out with a little jazz. This Tuesday night, the Lewisville Lake International Chamber Series holiday concert will feature pianist Roberto Verastegui, who will be lending his own interpretation of a few favorites by Leonard Bernstein, Duke Ellington and Cole Porter. Lucky listeners also will have the opportunity to hear him perform a few original compositions and improvisations. The 22-year-old Verastegui started playing when he was a child, first picking up tunes by ear, and before long he was performing cocktail and commercial music around Mexico. Later, he began his formal classical training, and four years ago he moved to North Texas to begin his studies as a scholarship student in the University of North Texas College of Music. During the spring of last year, Verastegui was one of five finalists to compete in the Phillips Jazz Piano Competition in Florida, where he placed third. Currently, Verastegui is pianist for the UNT One O’clock Lab Band. The Lewisville Lake International Chamber Series features emerging artists from around the world. The concert is sponsored by the Lewisville Lake Symphony in cooperation with the University of North Texas. The free performance begins at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 5500 Morriss Road in Flower Mound. For information, call 972874-9087 or visit www. lewisvillesymphony.org. — Staff report

etty and Lee Tomboulian won’t be back in Denton long, but the musical couple has a gig planned for Tuesday’s jazz night at Sweetwater Grill & Tavern.

TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend

Longtime Denton residents and music buffs will remember the Tomboulians for their local band, Circo, which served up Latin jazz — with an emphasis on sounds from Uruguay and Brazil. The couple relocated to Wisconsin in 2005 when Lee Tomboulian got a teaching position at Lawrence University Conservatory of Music in Appleton. Lee Tomboulian has one more year on his jazz piano teaching contract and Betty Tomboulian studied and earned a certification in Quantum Energetics therapy. She works as a Quantum Energetics therapist in Appleton. Betty Tomboulian said the couple has recently started performing again. “We have been performing more in the last few months,” she said. “We have a duo where Lee plays accordion and I play keyboard or guitar — not necessarily just jazz but the Beatles and R&B, along with some jazz.” Appleton is smaller than Denton. The community is known mostly for being the place where American paper manu-

some of its songs from earlier recordings. “I’m actually writing some,” Lee Tomboulian said. “I’m trying to bring some more harmonies into our set.” “I might do some solo work during the breaks that night,” Betty Tomboulian said. “And Lee might play some accor-

hen the Christmas feast is tucked away, the winter break can hit a lull. Why not hit the cinema to check out something light, something with special effects or maybe even something deep? Tangled

Tron: Legacy

### /2 Rated PG, 101 minutes.

Not screened by press deadline Rated PG, 126 minutes.

Rapunzel (voiced by Mandy Moore) finally joins Disney’s very special sorority: the Disney princesses. In this lively remake, Rapunzel knows the world only from the tower window. When the dashing, golden-hearted rogue Flynn Ryder (voiced by Zachary Levi) gets Rapunzel’s attention, they decide to travel together to solve the riddle of the lights in the sky, which appear every year on Rapunzel’s birthday. The duo also learns just how powerful Rapunzel’s long, blonde hair really is. Who should see this: Parents and kids, grandparents and kids, and fairy-tale lovers. Flynn is an affable hero for boys, and Rapunzel is a strong figure for girls. And for those who don’t love music? Disney keeps the musical numbers to a minimum. When they happen, though, the numbers are sweet and fun.

Walt Disney Pictures has made a movie for nostalgia junkies, gamers and 3-D buffs. Tron: Legacy finds rebellious Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) sucked into a dangerous alternate universe, where his father, Kevin, is both master and prisoner of a computer — the Master Control Program. Sam discovers that his father was abducted by the program 20 years earlier. He’ll have to play the same digital games his father did — only now the Master Control Program is smarter, faster and more confounding. Kind of like real computers. Who should see this: Sci-fi/fantasy nerds for the 2.0 version of the Master Control Program; movie buffs who have an unquenchable thirst for 3-D; or anyone who has just had to spend a workday on the phone with tech support.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

Megamind

### /2 Rated PG-13, 146 minutes.

Rated PG, 95 minutes.

1

It’s the beginning of the end for the Boy Who Lived. We all knew that Warner Bros. Pictures would whittle the beefy Potter books into an inevitable duel with the dark wizard, Lord Voldemort. He’s tried to kill Harry at least four times by now, but Harry has lost a battalion of protectors. In this sober, disturbing movie, Potter relies on his endurance, his wits and those of his best pals Hermione Granger and Ronald Weasley, and a destiny he doesn’t pretend to understand. Director David Yates subjects his three stars to isolation, doubt, raging hormones and an ending filled with torture and death. Who should see this: Purists who think Potter films should follow the books closely; college and high school sweethearts; and smart girls who’d never soft-pedal their talent and smarts for any guy.

## An insecure super villain (voiced by Will Ferrell) is thwarted by a conflicted and caped rival (voiced by Brad Pitt). Megamind is no dummy. He decides to put his powers to use for good when a new villain arrives to jostle Earth’s moral compass. Unlikely bonds are forged and lots of pratfalls and one-liners ensue. Megamind is screening in regular and 3-D formats. Crisp animation and good comedic timing on the part of a competent voice cast make this a cartoon that goes down easy — without the wrenching emotional apex of Toy Story 3. Who should see this: Families with young children who need 95 minutes of spectacle without a challenging script; Ferrell fans.

Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader ##1/2 Rated PG, 115 minutes. Twentieth Century Fox presents the third installment of The Chronicles of Narnia. Two of the Pevensie siblings, Lucy (Georgie Henley) and Edmund (Skandar Keynes) return to Narnia with an unwilling, and sniveling, cousin Eustace (Will Poulter). They join Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes) on the ship the Dawn Treader and head toward the end of the world. Based on C.S. Lewis’ series, the third film lacks the energy and import of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian. Then again, Lewis’ novel is more didactic and dense. Who should see this: Anyone who wants to remember that Christmas is, in part, a deep, religious holy day. After all, Lewis penned the Chronicles to teach postwar British youth the Christian gospel.

OPENING FRIDAY Gulliver’s Travels (#) Jack Black is his typically obnoxious self as Gulliver, a mail clerk who lies his way into writing a travel article on the Bermuda Triangle. On the subsequent Caribbean trip, he accidentally lands in Liliput, land of little people feuding with their enemy. Gulliver saves the day while also expediting a romance between a princess (Emily Blunt) and a commoner (Jason Segal). This appallingly stupid insult to Jonathan Swift contains adolescent humor and primitive special effects, and should appeal only to toddlers. If that. Rated PG, 87 minutes. — Boo Allen Little Fockers (##) This third entry in the Meet the Parents series ranks as the dumbest of all, a dubious achievement. This time, Jack Byrnes (Robert DeNiro) has health problems and wants to make sure his son-in-

and cinematographer Roger Deakins easily captures the open range, but he also renders the interiors in Vermeer-like tableaux. The vast night sky also provides Deakins’ pallet with a loving canvas. Much rests on Hailee Steinfeld’s young shoulders, in her portrayal of Mattie, who acts as buffer between the effete LaBoeuf and rougherhewn Cogburn. But she must also speak the infrequent but important narration, as well as delivering Portis’ dialogue. Her preternaturally perfect diction conveys the author’s formalism: “He.Has.Abandoned. Me.To.A.Congress.Of.Louts.” The Coens have mixed their customary black humor with their penchant for action and have come up with an unusual entry in the Western genre — but a jewel, nevertheless. ow that it finally appears on screen, True Grit is not as unlikely as it first seemed. In fact, it is a polished, well-made exploration of Western mythology by those well-known cowpokes, Joel and Ethan Coen. In True Grit, the Coen brothers revert to Arkansas novelist Charles Portis’ original source. They leave their usual landscapes of urban villains (No Country for Old Men), national security high jinks (Burn After Reading), and even their earlier entries into crime-gone-wrong (Fargo, Blood Simple). The Coens mostly seem to ignore the 1969 oater that landed John Wayne a best actor Oscar and instead opt for Portis’ more nuanced observations. In this go-round, Jeff Bridges plays Rooster Cogburn, an alcoholic, slovenly U.S. marshall whom Wayne portrayed as sim-

ply the latest in his long line of Western icons. Bridges, though, uses the character as an excuse for prolonged scenery-chewing, hemming, hawing, blustering, boasting, and acting like a Western version of his memorable Big Lebowski title role. Bridges’ performance skirts the line between lampoon and flavorful coloring. Set some few years after the Civil War, the tale revolves around 14-year-old Mattie Ross (newcomer Hailee Steinfeld). She seeks revenge for her father’s murder by cowardly fugitive Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin). She enlists the services of the perpetually

drunk Cogburn to enter American Indian territory to track down Chaney and his gang. Cogburn joins forces with Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Matt Damon). Against both their wishes, the headstrong Mattie also comes along. From there, the Coens follow Portis’ story, as the threesome have a lively series of encounters with both the colorful and the dangerous. With their first shot at a Western, the Coens render shocking and captivating images: a hanged man crashing to earth from a high limb; a man covered in a bear hide; severed fingers lying on a table; a single horse and rider riding against a setting sun. They also capture the stock images. After being taunted (“I call that bold talk for a oneeyed fat man”), Rooster is captured riding into a gang of four, pumping guns from both hands. Longtime Coen collaborator

Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand appear briefly. Rated PG-13, 98 minutes. Amid all the guilt and grief, they each find their own ways to cope. It manages to bring a fresh and uplifting perspective to a familiar subject, and offers provocative insight into the grieving process, even if it wraps up too neatly in the end. 127 Hours (###1/2) Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) again shows his versatility with this harrowing true-life adventure tale about Aron Ralston (James Franco), a hiker who slipped in a narrow Utah canyon, becoming immobile when his arm was wedged between rocks. As his provisions run low and survival hopes turn slim, he becomes desperate. Franco is terrific, while Boyle manages to bring suspense and high drama to a story with only one human character. Rated R, 93 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas and Plano. — T.J. Black Swan (###) Natalie Portman stars as Nina, a ballerina chosen to star in a new production of Swan Lake. Her mother (Barbara Hershey) and her ballet instructor (Vincent Cassel) both seem more than a little off-balance, until Nina too starts heading over the edge. Director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler) delivers the unusual hybrid horror-ballet film. Entertaining and strange. Rated R, 103 minutes. — B.A. Burlesque (##) Christina Aguilera makes a positive first impression in her big-screen debut with a performance that’s not much of a stretch. She stars as Ali, a waitress from small-town Iowa who moves to Los Angeles in search of stardom. She happens upon a neo-burlesque club on the Sunset Strip operated by a diva (Cher) on the downside of her dancing career. With Stanley Tucci, Kristen Bell and Alan Cumming, whose acting abilities are squandered by a script that lacks surprise when the music isn’t playing. — T.J. The Fighter (##) In a story based on two actual half-brothers from Lowell, Mass., Mark Wahlberg plays Mickey Ward, promising boxer, who trains with his crack-addicted brother, Dickie Eklund (Christian Bale). David O. Russell directs but fails to find much of interest in the deadend brothers and their cinematically stale story. Rated R, 114 minutes. — B.A.

20th Century Fox

Jack Black’s presence isn’t quite welcome, in more ways than one, in Gulliver’s Travels. How Do You Know (##1/2) Writerdirector James L. Brooks (As Good As It Gets) returns with another of his character-driven romantic comedies about the interconnected relationships between a top softball player (Reese Witherspoon), a smug baseball star (Owen Wilson), a down-onhis-luck corporate executive (Paul Rudd) and his crooked father (Jack Nicholson). It’s well-acted, but the meandering script feels more familiar than fresh by Brooks’ standards. Rated PG-13, 121 minutes. — T.J. I Love You Phillip Morris (###) This decidedly offbeat, not-for-everyone farce, which has been in legal limbo, features Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor in a fact-based story about Steven Russell (Carrey), a gay con man who leaves his family when he falls for a fellow prison inmate, Phillip Morris (McGregor). When out, Russell pulls a series of outrageous scams to finance their opulent lifestyle. Alternately homophobic, silly, politically incorrect and consistently outrageous. Rated R, 102 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas and Plano. — B.A. The King’s Speech (####) Colin First plays the Duke of York, the next King George VI, who, before ascending to the crown, struggles to overcome a halting stammer. He enlists the help of an unorthodox speech therapist (Geoffrey Rush). Well observed, thoughtful, intelligent film from director Tom Hooper, with an excellent supporting cast: Helena Bonham-Carter, Derek Jacobi, Guy Pearce, Michael Gambon. Rated R, 118 minutes. — B.A. Love and Other Drugs (##) Intriguing parts never make a satisfying whole in this 1990s romantic satire about a brash young Viagra salesman (Jake Gyllenhaal) whose attitude is placed in check by a troubled painter (Anne Hathaway) deal-

The latest from director Ed Zwick (Legends of the Fall) has a lively pace and strong performances, but it’s also wildly uneven, with several frustrating shifts in tone that keep the audience at an emotional distance. Rated R, 112 minutes. — T.J. Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (###) Quirky horror comedy from Finland about an archaeological dig that accidentally unearths Santa Claus, which leads the citizens of a snowy town to suspect the worst when its children start disappearing soon thereafter. Eventually Santa’s elves try to come to his rescue. The film’s dry and subversive sense of humor is its chief strength, even if it turns more soft than edgy. Still, it’s an ambitious and darkly original fairy tale. Rated R, 84 minutes. At the Texas Theatre. — T.J. The Social Network (####) In a

case of better-than-it-sounds, David Fincher directs from a script by Aaron Sorkin about the creation of Facebook. Jesse Eisenberg stars as the Harvard undergraduate who wants to expand his social life and ends up creating the world’s foremost social networking website, making millions and being sued by everyone he considered a friend. Fast, funny, clever and well done. Rated PG-13, 121 minutes. — B.A. The Tempest (##1/2) Shakespeare supplies the sublime words, and Julie Taymor contributes the outlandish visuals in this stylized version of the Bard’s play. Director Taymor uses contemporary special effects to show the magical prowess of Prospero, here Prospera (Helen Mirren), the wizardly ruler of an isolated island who takes revenge on those stranded after the tempest. Unfortunately, Taymor goes for broad

laughs with her cast, which includes comedian Russell Brand. It is not the stuff dreams are made of. At the Angelika Dallas. Rated PG-13, 110 minutes. — Boo Allen The Tourist (##) The pairing of Oscar winners Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie lend star power to this otherwise muddled romantic thriller about a math teacher (Depp) who crosses paths with an alluring stranger (Jolie) on a train to Venice, before he realizes that she’s somehow involved in a dangerous international scheme. The actors can’t rescue a tedious mistaken-identity script that relies on formulaic catand-mouse plot mechanics. But at least the Italian scenery helps pass the time. Rated PG-13, 103 minutes. — T.J. Unstoppable (###) Forget that it’s supposedly based on a true story and ignore the logical side of your brain, and there’s some fun to be had in this high-octane thriller about a locomotive engineer (Denzel Washington) and a young trainee (Chris Pine) forced to put aside their differences to stop an unmanned, out-of-control freight train. Veteran director Tony Scott knows his way around an action film, and he wisely keeps the adrenaline pumping while Washington makes the most of a thin script. Rated PG-13, 98 minutes. — T.J. Yogi Bear (##) Kids might enjoy this frenetic 3-D adaptation of the classic cartoon, which places CGI bears in a live-action story about a greedy politician who wants to close Jellystone Park just before its 100year anniversary. It’s up to mischievous Yogi (voice of Dan Aykroyd) and Boo-Boo (Justin Timberlake) to save the day. The sight gags and one-liners are sporadically amusing, but the script proves that the material isn’t meant to be stretched to feature length. Rated PG, 80 minutes. — T.J.
