We're not Dallas, Fort Worth or Austin. We're
an’s Silverleaf threw a party on Saturday night. “’Twas the Night” served chef Pam Chittenden’s food and let Denton musician and composer David Pierce cut loose with an orchestra. The good stuff: Chittenden’s wasabi mustard sauce was a revelation to her well-executed salmon en croute. Pierce keeps delighting as an arranger, too. He assigned the brass section of his Christmas orchestra the twangy guitar parts from the Elvis Presley version of “Blue Christmas.” The awkward stuff: For a hot second, a party to the petition to recall District 4 City Council member Joey Hawkins was seated next to the councilman himself. The help shifted things around in a jiffy. But how Denton is that? Political protesters run in the same circles as the local power brokers. ■ Storyteller Shelly Tucker wanted to find out this week

who was Denton's naughtiest, but not to update her downtown ghost tours. Nope. Instead of a lump of coal, she’s picking up a 1,000-piece Jackson Pollock puzzle from the Dallas Museum of Art gift shop. ■ Someone got sassy with the marquee at El Guapo’s last week. It read “Mike told me to change the stupid sign, so I did.” Should we have sent a photo to PassiveAggressive Notes.com? ■ We’re all about the creative push to rebrand Denton as a hip and cool oasis of mom and pop-style restaurants and bars. But every once in a while, we notice the workaday business owners who seem to be in what the kids call “beast mode” all the time. Anyone who routinely takes Fort Worth Drive to Locust Street has noticed National Crosslink Powder Coating. This local business is always busy. It’s enough to make us wonder if they’ve powder-coated every truck, boat and wrought iron patio furniture set in North Texas. ■ Denton musician Wally Campbell only recently watched the original Star Wars, with witnesses at a screening hosted expressly for him. Does anyone know if he’s seen The Force Awakens? Did he like either? This silence is too much for us.

Rated PG, 86 minutes. — LAT The Big Short (★★★★) Comedy director Adam McKay (Anchorman) takes Michael Lewis’ best-selling nonfiction book and turns it into a fast-paced, funny, informative, originally conceived delight. McKay dissects the 2007-08 financial meltdown, using rapid dialogue, hilarious interludes (Margot Robbie explaining diffuse terms while taking a bubble bath), improbable situations, and a cast of outrageous and colorful Dickensian characters, all filled by a star cast: Steve Carrell, Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale and others. Rated R, 130 minutes. — Boo Allen The Good Dinosaur (★★★★) Pixar crafts a wonderful world where dinos can keep humans as pets, managing to shock, surprise and pack an emotional wallop in its cannon. The film features an unlikely pairing of an apatosaurus named Arlo (voiced by Raymond Ochoa) and a human toddler, Spot (Jack Bright), as they navigate a world filled with all kinds of risks and dangers. Peter Sohn conjures up a visually dazzling animated feature. The Good Dinosaur’s pleasures are on smaller scale compared to the likes of Monsters, Inc. or even this year’s Inside Out, but the film’s heart is still monstrous and beats with purpose. Will Smith stars as real-life neuropathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu in “Concussion.”
Concussion ★★★ Rated PG-13, 123 minutes. As it turns out, hard-hitting sports such as football, where players take repeated blows to the head, can lead to brain damage. Who knew?
The NFL surely did when neuropathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu (played by Will Smith) discovered and documented a degenerative brain disease he dubbed CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy). However, the truth is, the NFL probably knew much earlier. This is the idea director Peter Landesman (Kill the Messenger), a former investigative journalist, touches on. When it comes to criticizing the NFL, Landesman pulls no punches. Through Smith’s
Omalu, he explores the ugly side o repercussions of going head-to-he It’s a worthwhile discussion of an crippling the beloved sport. subject that made for a great Frontline documentary two years ago. However, as a narrative film, Concussion makes the mistake of putting too much focus on Omalu’s personal story rather than capitalizing on the bigger question at hand. While Smith turns in one of his best performances and the story occasionally dances in the endzone, Landesman fumbles from an over-thehead, cliched script that detracts from Concussion’s ultimate implications.

from opposite ends of the spectrum. One dad, Brad (Ferrell), has everything going for him: He’s a radio exec with a loving wife (Linda Cardellini) and two stepchildren (Scarlett Estevez and Owen Vaccaro) to whom he’s committed to loving no matter what life may throw at him. Then in waltzes Dusty (Wahlberg), the children’s biological father who pulls off the bad boy, cool dad that the kids eat up. Fighting to win the
affections of their children, the duo go face-to-face in this escalating daddy-war comedy. Daddy’s Home follows in the footsteps of other comedies like Step Brothers, and while there are a few well-executed gags involving humiliation and failure, it doesn’t offer much to impress or warrant leaving the house over the holiday weekend.
When it comes to raising hell at the multiplex, no one can do it better than Quentin Tarantino. He’s a master of his craft, writing profane poetry that’s hot to the touch. From characters vomiting blood to strange sexual implications, Tarantino never lets his audience out easy. But he can sure take the most uninteresting of ideas and turn them into a fully layered and complex thrill rides.
Tarantino always swings for the fences, and even when he doesn’t hit it out of the park, he always puts the ball in play. This is the case with The Hateful Eight. hunters, ex-soldiers and mysteriosos shack up for a cold night of deception and betrayal. Bullets are fired, coffee is poisoned and blood is spilt — who will be the last one standing? The story is deftly handled by Tarantino and becomes, like many of his films, a genre mash-up (in this case, a mixture of Western, comedy and mystery). At more than 2 1/2 hours, it’s aptly paced with an undeniable flow across the narrative. If you can suspend disbelief and roll with the punches, The Hateful Eight is a patient firecracker. It may not sizzle like Inglourious Basterds or Django Unchained, but it’ll have you eager in seats, lost in dialogue and amazed by its ensemble cast. It’s deliciously infectious.
MOVIES Continued from Page 6 Poehler reunite on screen to portray middle-aged siblings who are forced to confront the realities of adulthood. Sisters, directed by Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect), starts off disjointed, but once it collects its footing it’s a mile-a-minute laugh storm that hits your funny bone where it hurts. Fey and Poehler’s timing, the offbeat dialogue and gags make this film the perfect couple and sibling hangout alternative to Star Wars. Rated R, 118 minutes. — P.B. Star Wars: The Force Awakens (★★★★) For more than 40 years, parents and children have flocked to theaters to share the Star Wars experience and watch with delight. Thankfully, J.J. Abrams (Star Trek, Super 8) revives that love and creates a Star Wars film to be excited about again. The seventh installment in the franchise, The Force Awakens, is set 30 years following the events in Return of the Jedi. The Empire has returned in the form of the First Order, and it’s up to the Resistance and its allies to restore balance to the galaxy. Abrams strikes a careful balance, tipping his hat to Star Wars creator George Lucas while also never overstepping his bounds. On top of the glorious action and practical effects, the performances brought by its stellar cast are top-notch. As a dauntless scavenger named Rey, Daisy Ridley portrays a strapping and tough character worthy of our admiration. John Boyega (Attack the Block) also gives a breakthrough performance as Finn, a Stormtrooper whose conscience causes him to switch teams. With Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver and Andy Serkis. Rated PG-13, 135 minutes. — P.B.
Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro and Edgar Ramirez star in “Joy.” Twentieth Century Fox
Joy ★★1⁄2 Rated PG-13, 124 minutes. If you saw the trailer for Joy, you’re probably confused as to what it’s about. Is it a sequel to Silver Linings Playbook? An homage to The Godfather? The trailer is mysterious, much like all of
David O. Russell’s films as of late. The actors (Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro) may be the same, but you never know what he’ll cook up and serve. Like American Hustle, Joy is hard to nail down. It follows the story of its titular character (Lawrence) and her family as they navigate the business world and invent the Miracle Mop. The film starts off messy,
leading you to believe it’s a comedy about a struggling mother who’s too busy caring for her family to excel to her full potential. From there, the film builds to a wonderfully spicy and satirical drama about Joy’s self-wringing mop and a behind-the-scenes look at QVC. Eventually, Joy arrives at a finale as limp as the mops at the center of the plot. While the story itself stems from truth, Russell’s mean-
dering presentation keeps the film from ever taking off. Russell can write fun characters in a world spun with dysfunction, but with his last two films, he has struggled to zero in on the central issue, going too broad in scope. Luckily, his talented cast can occasionally carry the film through its uneven jumble.
