Denton Arts & Jazz Festival

Welcome to fun, Denton style By Kit King For the Denton Record-Chronicle

T

he last weekend in April is almost here, and anyone familiar with Denton knows what that means. For three days, cars crowd the downtown area, the population of the city almost doubles, and the sound of music can be heard throughout the blocks surrounding Quakertown Park. The Denton Arts & Jazz Festival brings more than 200,000 visitors as well as toprated musicians, artists and craftsmen and women to town. Begun in the early 1980s as Spring Fling — a small fair to raise money for the arts in Denton — the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival is the result of merger between Spring Fling and the Denton Jazz Fest, an event that pulled from the many musicians living and studying in Denton. This year, the festival is dedicated to the man who established the University of North Texas and Denton as a birthplace for fine jazz musicians in the United States. Leon Breeden, who died in August, led the jazz studies program at UNT from 1959 to 1981. He took the program to international prominence, and trained some of the leading jazz musicians performing today. While the festive weekend offers something for everyone, its focus is Denton’s long and illustrious tradition as an incubator for musicians and artists. Each year, the festival draws some of the country’s leading musicians, as well as offering a showcase for local performers. In addition, artists and artisans from across the nation bring the fruits of their talent to the park. True jazz buffs will gather in front of the Wells Fargo/ Budweiser Jazz Stage in

Welcome the area behind City Hall. The coolest jazz, the brightest stars, will perform. Headliners begins with a tribute to Leon Breeden, featuring Tom “Bones Malone, Lou Marini and Marvin Stamm. Saturday night, the Quebe Sisters Band plays at 7 p.m., and the Texas Tornados take the stage at 9 p.m. As always, Brave Combo wraps up the festival Sunday evening at 7 p.m. The Budweiser Courtyard Stage, in front of Denton City Hall, will showcase regional groups such as Bonnie and Nick Norris, Rivers West, and Little Jack Melody and His Young Turks. KNTU-FM sponsors the third professional stage, which is not a stage at all. The Roving River Stage is the base for musicians who roam the park making music. They’ll include groups such as the Chisholm Trail Cowboys, the Jazz Cats, Rhythm Tribe and Joe Tucker.

University of North Texas music students will perform on their own Showcase Stage in the northeast section of the park. Lab Bands, from the Nine O’clock to the One O’clock, will play on the Showcase Stage, along with UNT Jazz Singers, the UNT African Drumming and Dance group and the UNT Steel Drum Band. The Denton RecordChronicle Festival Stage just north of the bridge continues to be a venue for school and community acts such as Frisco’s Stafford Middle School Spartans of Swing, the Denton High School Percussion Group and Coppell’s Austin Elementary School Marimba Band. A number of dance groups, such as Ballet de Force, Denton Swing Dance Organization and Dance Fusion 2, also perform on this stage. Inside the Denton Senior Center, more student musicians take over the Denton

Benefit League Center Stage with bands, orchestras and choirs from many of the schools across Denton County. They are joined by groups such as Young at Heart, Strictly Dixie and the Fiddle Rascals. On the far north edge of the park, the Wells Fargo Celebration Stage features a mix of acts, including the North Central Texas College Jazz Band, the Lifeline Church Band, Mister Joe Trio, Polly Maynard, the 77th Army Band Jazz Combo and Bone Doggie. As the bands play, guests at the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival can indulge in an array of foods representing countries from around the globe. They will find gyros from Greece, Thai noodles, German sausage, tamales and nachos, teriyaki chicken and, of course, good old American corn dogs. For dessert, there will be Belgian waffles, ice cream, funnel cakes and homemade cookies from

the women’s clubs of Denton. The juried art from across the country displayed at the

festival draws collectors and See WELCOME on Page 6

Crowds ponder art in the Denton Civic Center.

Welcome browsers, who spend hours searching for a perfect painting, a spectacular sculpture or a captivating ceramic work. Almost 200 artists and craftsmen and women will be showing and selling their wares in three different areas. Fine arts, once solely contained in the Civic Center, has spilled over into the outdoor area directly adjacent to the building. Shoppers can find paintings and drawings in every medium, along with sculpture in wood, metal and ceramic, art

glass, photography, fine pottery and jewelry. The crafts area is equally varied, with an array of hand-crafted items ranging from soaps to toys and clothing to clocks. The Children’s Art Tent, sponsored by Target Stores and Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton, has been a feature of the festival for many years. Kids can discover their creativity through an array of media — sculpture and painting, mosaic and collage, airbrush and papier-mache. The Kid Zone gives kids a chance to play games, have their faces painted and watch balloon artists at work.

Thank You, for recognizing us as the best place to play pool!

At the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival, the list of activities for the kids grows every year. The young ones can listen to and watch entertainers, but they have the most fun when they can take part in the performance. Whether it’s making their own art in the Target Children’s Art Tent or making their own music in Steve Gryb’s Percussion Pettng Zoo, they’re sure to have a great time. Denton Arts & Jazz Festival Behind the scenes

Festival takes teamwork, planning By Kit King For the Denton Record-Chronicle

In the two and a half days of the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival, audiences can listen to professional performances involving more than 350 musicians. The man who pulls this all together is Ray Hair, president of the American Federation of Musicians, a resident of North Texas and a University of North Texas music graduate. He began outdoor shows in Denton in 1985 with the first Denton Jazz Fest, a Sundayonly show with a flatbed trailer for a stage. “Jazz Fest grew out of a program called ‘Concerts on the Square,’ featuring primarily jazz groups from the school [UNT]. The man who ran the parks and recreation program suggested we do the Sunday show, and I got together with the city and the convention and

“We wanted to bring back the best of Denton.” — Ray Hair

visitors bureau to put it on,” Hair explained. Within six years, the Sunday afternoon event was drawing 10,000 people. In the early ’90s, everything changed. Hair and Carol Short got together and merged the Jazz Fest with Spring Fling, a fundraising event for the Denton arts community, naming it the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival. They began bringing in big-name headliners and fine artists in various media, drawing even more to the festival. “We brought in headliners that complemented with the

school and community produced,” Hair said. “We wanted to bring back the best of Denton. We pull from Denton, and bring in groups that have gone from Denton to work professionally.” “Our organization pioneered the multi-stage outdoor venue, and, over the years, we’ve established relationships with every musician that appears.” Hair and his production team begin work in January for the April event. “We manage the logistics with the right kind of promptness, and now we’ve been doing it so long, everyone knows what to do,” he said. While the local and regional groups are always cooperative, Hair admits some of the bigname headliners have requirements that can cause extra work — all in a year’s work. See SCENES on Page 10

Scenes “We’ve never really had a hassle with a musician,” he said. In fact, when the PA system went out before Joshua Redmon’s concert one year, the performer went right ahead with his show.

“Everybody in the audience quieted down, and it turned into a great evening,” Hair said. “We always want to bring in great programs, so the audience will go away and say, ‘That was a once-in-a-lifetime show.’”

Volunteers ing on the next year’s extravaganza. Board members plan, raise money and put together the major elements of the festival. They line up sponsors, many of whom have provided funding since the inception of the festival. They work with the city of Denton staff, another vital element in putting together a successful event. And, they recruit volunteers for Top Hands. Once festival weekend rolls around, this group of volunteers goes to work. Wearing special badges, Top Hands serve food and drinks, sell T-shirts, man information booths and handle the numerous challenges that crop up. These dedicated members are the foundation of a successful festival. “If it weren’t for the volunteers and sponsors, we couldn’t have the festival and we certainly couldn’t have it free,” said Carrell Ann Simmons, chairwoman of the Top Hands committee. “They are critical.” Several new booths have been added this year, and Simmons said she has 632 slots to fill. At present, she has more than 200 Top Hands, but she needs more. “We’re about two-thirds full,”

Comfort II Luxury • Twin Mattress $129 • Full Mattress $159 • Queen Mattress $199

she said. A Top Hands annual membership is $15, with a $30 membership for a supporting Top Hand. “We brought in about $6,000 in membership fees last year,” Simmons said,

“and that all goes back to support keeping the festival free.” Those interested in becoming a Top Hand can call the festival office at 940-5650931, or Simmons at 940-3678311.

The Quebe Sisters Band performs this Friday in Denton.

“We love traveling and seeing new places. We’ve met some great friends on the road, and hearing so many different kinds of music really helps the band,” he said. The group will tour through the summer, playing for both large and small audiences.

“It’s our first time to play there, but we’ve heard for years about the quality entertainment, so we’re super excited about the opportunity,” said Joey McKenzie about the Quebe Sisters’ upcoming appearance at the festival Friday afternoon. McKenzie, who, with his wife, owns McKenzies’ Music & Instructional Studio in Mansfield, began giving the Quebe sisters fiddle lessons more than 10 years ago The sisters — Grace, Sophia and Hulda — had been to a fiddle contest in Denton and wanted to learn. They were 7, 10 and 12 years old at the time. They began competing, winning national championships at an early age. The band, which includes McKenzie and Drew Phelps, both guitarists, was formed and began touring five years ago While the band has scheduled its third CD for later this year, the members love to tour, according to McKenzie.

Headliners Sahm said. So, they are playing familiar songs, most from the original band’s repertoire. In its original incarnation, the band was described as a mix of “country, rhythm and blues, ballad singing, Texas rock and roll, and conjunto” — a type of music that mixes Mexican Norteño with German and Czechoslovakian polkas and waltzes.” Shawn Sahm started the idea of reviving the sound two years ago on the 10th anniversary of his father’s death. It started with an album that included an old demo of Doug Sahm, as well as the last recordings from Fender, who died in 2006. The group has toured nationwide, with performances at Lincoln Center,

numerous music festivals and smaller venues. “We can play a big place, and if the response isn’t there, it’s not as fun as playing a small place,” Sahm said. “It all depends on the crowd.”

Brave Combo As always, Brave Combo will close the festival Sunday night. It’s a concert that both band and audience look forward to with enthusiasm. “[It’s] a great festival that happens in a beautiful spot in an incredible town filled with great musicians,” said founding member Carl Finch. “What we love about it, this is one of the times when we connect with the musically inclined high school kids. It’s a big Sunday blast, and what we want them to do is have space and time to enjoy it.”

A band that can’t be classified, Brave Combo plays everything from polka to pop, from classical to chacha. “We hear things we like and work it into our music,” Finch said. Always looking for new ventures, this year the band has a new CD, Kikiriki, that won a Pace Award from the Polka American Corp. and did an album with accordionist Guy Klucevsek. They also scored a TV pilot, Taxi Dog. “It’s a kids’ show and it looks great,” Finch said. “It looks as if it might go.” He feels the band’s Denton home has a lot to do with its success. “Living in a town like Denton where we’re free to be ourselves, it’s great. We’re grateful for the environment we live in. And we feel like we’ve been ambassadors for Denton.”

PETS BELONG AT HOME We love animals, but not at the festival. Because of the crowds, the kids and the congestion, the festival grounds are no place for pets. So, please, leave your pets at home for the day.
