WE THE PEOPLE
A welcome from the new board chair By Larry Parker Chamber Board Chair 2014-2015
T
o serve as Chairman of the Board for the Denton Chamber of Commerce is a privilege and an honor. I am humbled and want to thank my Father in Heaven for the many blessings he has bestowed on me and my family through his grace and love. The Denton Chamber is entering its 105th year and along with its affiliates, stands on a threshold of tremendous opportunity. We will experience a major expansion of I-35E, which will embellish potential growth based on our prime regional location. We are closer to having a new convention center in Denton and the economic impact and benefits are unlimited. Based on research, a convention center will also drive guests to the other fine hotels in Denton.
This will be the 30th year for Leadership Denton, and this program has produced many leaders in our community at all levels. The Denton Chamber will once again Parker host the Denton County delegation during the 84th State Legislative session for 2014. The 2014 Municipal Election candidates will have the opportunity to sit before the board and answer questions from our members. A major task this year for the Denton Chamber will be the reaccreditation process. After reviewing the reaccreditation documents and the facts from five years ago, the Denton Chamber was actually operating in accordance to retain the one star we lost. This year we are going to shoot for a 5-star accreditation under the leadership of Mr. Perry McNeill.
The Chamber website continues to be the greatest asset for our member’s investment. There are many opportunities for members to come together and network. Social media is expanding daily with Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Blogs. This year’s slogan is “We the People of the chamber, investing in membership for a better Denton. “We the People means - all members everyone, not individually or as cliques, rather a sense of family and community! As Vice Chair of the Membership division for the past four years, our goal has been to enhance the experience for our members. The Denton Chamber of Commerce is the front door to our community. A major goal has been to unite our members, break away from the “clique syndrome, which was exposed in the 25th Leadership Denton Class project in 2010 (the year I was fortunate enough
to have participated). We have made a concentrated effort to change that culture and feel confident we have made great strides. The LEAD program is a model designed to encourage and allow members to step up their involvement and visibility while volunteering in one of three different coalitions. These volunteers reach out and interact with all members throughout the year. If we collectively pull in the same direction, common goals and interests can be achieved by all. The greatest asset of the Denton Chamber is its members. If you are not a member, we encourage you to join. If a member, when was the last time you spoke to someone about becoming a member? Express the importance for our city businesses to join together with common goals and interests – helping to make our community the best we can be!

Outgoing chair lists initiatives M
y primary focus during the 2013-14 Program Year has been to implement key initiatives proposed in the second stage of the chamber’s 2012-2017 Strategic Plan. I’m pleased to report that there were several notable achievements. One of my personal priorities in helping shape the Strategic Plan was the concept of a virtual “Suggestion Box” to anonymously address City of Denton development regulations. We activated a link on the chamber’s website last June allowing individuals involved in various aspects of commercial construction and development to submit input regarding specific challenges and concerns they have encountered. Originally endorsed by the chamber board in 2007, the feasibility phase for a new public convention center project was approved by the City Council and University of North Texas Board of Regents in December. The chamber’s Strategic Plan went on to propose a new off-site visitor center & Denton Store project, which ultimately connects to the convention center project in terms of added sales staff. Based on recommendations from the Leadership Denton class graduation project in 2012, this initiative is picking up speed. When completed, the chamber will ultimately expand and improve how it serves as the “front door to the city.” We had exceptional participation in the

city council candidate questionnaire and issues forum during the 2013 municipal elections. Last June, we took our annual elected officials Burroughs reception to the next level, thanks to the support of Sally Beauty Holdings. Development of the local workforce was the primary objective of the chamber’s first ever career planning fair in early November. More than 300 juniors and sophomores from all across the Denton Independent School District met directly with representatives from Peterbilt, Labinal, Sally Beauty Holdings, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton and Denton Regional Medical Center. The students also heard from panelists from Texas Woman’s University, the University of North Texas and North Central Texas College. A standing social media regimen has been implemented, including FaceBook, Linked In and Twitter. There are a lot of moving parts to this chamber; and today’s technology is vital to helping promote opportunities for each of us to plug in where we can find the most benefits, interest and support.

A note from the chamber president T
here are several clever metaphoric descriptions for defining a chamber of commerce, and how our members benefit from their investment. Some of my favorite clichĂŠs are: “Front door to the city,â€? “voice of the business community,â€? “champion of the free market systemâ€? and the ever popular “we don’t make things, we make things happen.â€? All good stuff, but fact is, by design, every membership is different. We represent a wide variety of business classifications. As a result, our programs and initiatives are equally diverse. Besides, our average membership account invests approximately $25 per month toward standing operations. The foundation of our original charter primarily focused on promoting the community as a whole first, with the idea that all boats float with a rising tide (another
classic metaphor). With today’s technology, however, we are better able to offer a more direct return-on-investment, the least of which is the chamber’s website and its Carpenter listing of our members, Denton’s primary business directory. This listing offers our members alphabetically, and by multiple business categories. Each member account, in turn, has its own mini-home page on our website. Each membership account has its own security access, allowing continuous individual modification of their products, services, personnel and locations. Because the chamber is often the first point of contact for visitors, potential new residents and prospective business, banner and rotating advertising has proven to be an attractive supplement for some of our
members. Our business directory software allows us to confirm the metrics for hits and views. This is over and above the hundreds of traditional publications we distribute, all containing exclusive chamber member advertising. As mentioned, we make a lot of things happen. We coordinate at least three direct networking events nearly every month. We also try to conduct a major trade show; this year the focus will be business-to-consumer. We also work with the Denton ISD to get member information to their new teachers every August, as well as a new event, designed to link juniors and sophomores with area major employers. The third component of this initiative is to make sure these students are aware of their training and continued education opportunities through all three of our
local higher education institutions. We have a vibrant Women In Commerce initiative, with a fall and spring menu of opportunities to enhance and showcase this expanding sector of our membership. In April and May we enlist responses from all announced city council candidates on commercial development issues and code enforcement. This process includes a forum with our board and any interested members. Later in the summer, we hold a reception for area elected officials at all levels, again, exclusively for our members. I don’t promise that we can answer every “What’s in it for me? query; but, in my opinion, we do what we are supposed to do, and we do it well. Chuck Carpenter President Denton Chamber of Commerce

Collaboration key to advocacy efforts
Although the Denton Chamber’s bylaws prohibit involvement in partisan politics, the organization does weigh in on issues at all levels of government. At the local level, the most recent public initiative addressed by the chamber was the referendum to create a natural gas utility to help supplement supply to businesses in the area near the Denton Airport. Denton voters approved the proposal by 72 percent. The chamber board formally endorsed a proposed convention center project in 2007, and has been actively monitoring progress on the negotiations with the O’Reilly Hospitality Group. Last June, a “Suggestion Box” link was activated on the chamber’s website as an anonymous service to construction and development professionals working on projects within the city limits of Denton. During state legislative sessions, the chamber coordinates joint position statements reflecting topics of mutual interest between the local business community,

Chamber members working to LEAD By Brianna Vela Denton Chamber of Commerce
Leadership skills are esteemed in and outside of the workplace. Their value doubles once the impact can be observed by the local community as well as employers. The Denton Chamber of Commerce LEAD Delegate Program has been bringing together leaders of Chamber businesses since 2011. It was created in order to improve relations among the organization, its members and the community. This volunteer-based program is divided into three coalitions: Host, Outreach and Welcome. Each serves a special purpose to build relationships with chamber members and to make members feel welcome, according to Amanda Crocker, 2013-2014 LEAD Chair. Courtesy photo

LEAD “Each coalition has specific tasks and goals,” Crocker said. “The Welcome Coalition builds relationships with new members and the Host Coalition attends and assists with events. Our Outreach Coalition is responsible for building relationships with existing members.” Crocker said the ability to get more involved within the Chamber and the business community is a great opportunity. “Not only do the delegates advocate for the Chamber and build relationships with the Chamber members, but it results in building your network as well,” Crocker said. As 2013-2014 Host Coalition Director, Monica Glenn looks forward to meeting everyone who attends Chamber events. “We (Host Coalition) want everyone to feel welcome at any event they attend,” Glenn said, “Having a small part of that is very rewarding.”
Glenn said she has developed several friendships from being a LEAD delegate and encourages anyone who loves Denton to apply for the program. The application period is usually each February and delegates are announced in March. Crocker and Glenn believe the successes from the 2013-2014 year will translate into the April 2014-March 2015 program year. Larry Parker, 2014-2015 Chairman of the Board, hopes to see the group grow and for more Chamber members to get involved. “We are extremely fortunate to have so many talented individuals involved now with this program,” Parker said. “LEAD is a model created to cultivate eager helping hands for the Chamber staff in bringing the membership closer to our core purposes.” The Denton Chamber of Commerce encourages Chamber members to apply each year. LEAD participants must be members in “good standing” and must be willing

35Express update The expansion of Interstate 35E is getting busier by the day as crews work in a number of areas to complete the first phase of the 30-mile project. The ongoing bouts of cold weather in the past two months have not impacted the project much, said Kimberly Sims, a spokeswoman for the project. “We have had some hiccups with the weather but a lot of times there are other things we can focus on,” Sims said. “But at the end of the day, we still have to be finished by mid-2017. If that means maybe the workday is extended or work schedule extended, that’s what we will do. “As of right now, we are still on schedule to meet the deadline.” The expansion will add general-purpose lanes, managed toll lanes and frontage road improvements from Interstate 635 in Dallas County to U.S. Highway 380 in Denton County. The existing lanes of the highway will remain free. Phase 1 of the project will add an additional free lane each way from State Highway 121 to U.S. 380, as well as two reversible managed lanes from I-635 to an area around Swisher and Turbeville roads. Phase 1 also includes the expansion of the Lewisville Lake Bridge. Funding for the project is a joint effort between the Texas Department of Transportation, the Regional Transportation Council and multiple regional partners. Construction that began as “grub work” last September has evolved into work on the expansion of the Bonnie Brae bridge. By now, motorists have been experiencing various nightly lane closures on I-35E at Loop 288 and Mayhill Road as crews prepare to widen those bridges. Sims said drilled shafts - which support bridge columns - are currently being placed. “Since these structures will be widened from the inside, the middle of the bridges are being partially demolished so that they can be expanded,” Sims said. Work on the drilled shafts at the Lewisville Lake Bridge continues and crews are expected to begin paving the new southbound frontage road, north of FM407, later this month.
Further south, in Carrollton, work continues on the expansion of the Whitlock Lane/Sandy Lake Road, Crosby Road and Valwood Parkway bridges, Sims said. The roadway has been re-striped and traffic shifted so that crews can partially demolish the bridges and begin widening them to accommodate the managed-lane system. Denton County Commissioner Andy Eads lauded the fact that the Lewisville Lake Bridge will be the first component of the expansion project to be completed. “The expansion and construction of the bridge first was a requirement of the Commissioners Court agreement with TxDOT,” he said. “That will be an instant improvement to mobility. It will add the access roads over the bridge we don’t have now.” The contractor on the project is AGL Constructors, a consortium that includes Archer Western Contractors, Granite Construction Co. and Lane Construction Corp. Eads said AGL was doing a great job so far, particularly in communicating the project status with the public. AGL has set up a public information office at 2420 S. Stemmons Freeway in Lewisville that is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and by appointment on Saturday. Officials also encourage people to follow the project online at www.35express.org, through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts and through an electronic newsletter. They can also sign up for text alerts. More than 1,800 people had signed up to receive the e-newsletter by early March, Sims said. She noted that the public has been very responsive to the various social media updates, particularly if there are incidents happening on I-35E. Motorists want to know what’s going on and how long it will take, she said. “We encourage people to log on and register for the daily updates,” Eads said. omen-owned-and-operated businesses are valuable assets to any city. The vast majority of revenues that women gain in their enterprises are reinvested into their communities. The Denton Chamber of Commerce recognizes the significant role that women play in Denton’s economy. It is with this insight that the Women in Commerce initiative originated in the Fall of 2010. Since its inception, the Women in Commerce programs have continued to promote the growth and development of Denton area business women through initiatives that increase access to resources, professional and personal
development and networking. These programs and initiatives include the Annual Fall Conference which features successful and inspiring speakers, a spring networking event which allows women to form new connections and occasional ad hoc opportunities to meet and interact with women of distinction in Denton. With the invaluable support of Texas Woman’s University and active volunteers from a variety of Denton Chamber businesses, Women in Commerce has made excellent headway in representing this key business segment. Partners like Sally Beauty provide strong credibility to this program as it

Small Business of the Year
The men behind new apartment projects in Denton including Urban Square at Unicorn Lake and H Squared on Hickory Street are also behind the Small Business of the Year. Links Construction, co-owned by Lee Ramsey and Brandon Martino, received the Small Business of the Year Award on Friday from the Denton Chamber of Commerce. “We’re just very humbled, first of all, that somebody would even nominate us, and two, that people would vote for us for small business of the year,” Ramsey said. “It’s our hometown, too, so it’s a big honor for us.” Both Martino and Ramsey went to high school in Denton, and Ramsey went to college at the University of North Texas. After college, both worked in other areas but decided to start a business in Denton in 2007.
Now the company has 21 employees and 11 of those are full-time positions added in 2013. Other projects by the company include the Hickory Street Lofts, apartments at 1119 W. Hickory St. and apartments at 1512 Elm St. As the company grows and starts working on more projects outside of Denton, Ramsey said they will always consider Denton home, and this award solidifies their place in the community. “I think it just establishes us more in Denton, and shows that we’re a company that’s growing and very active in our community,” Ramsey said. “Even as we move to more statewide, and hopefully, more national projects, we are happy to be based here.” By Jenna Duncan Denton Record-Chronicle

Partnership with NCTC part of help for small businesses The Small Business Development Center is a partnership between the Denton Chamber of Commerce and North Central Texas College. It provides answers to questions about small business, from planning a business to improving a business. It has offices in Denton, Gainesville and Flower Mound. The center offers free business counseling on a range of topics, from writing a business plan to social media to financial issues. It also offers training and seminars for people looking to get into business.
Chuck Fremaux, a former chairman of the chamber’s board of directors, said the center helped Little Guys Movers when it was first starting out. Pam Livingston, a certified small-business development specialist, helped them put together a business plan, he said. Chamber keeping up with new technology By Brianna Vela Denton Chamber of Commerce
Since its beginnings in 1909, the Denton Chamber of Commerce has prided itself on being the “front door” to the Denton business community. Within the past two decades, this “front door” mentality has evolved into to an online phenomenon. Fewer people are looking up businesses in the yellow pages, but are searching the World Wide Web for the latest information. The Denton Chamber of Commerce is using social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and WordPress, among others, to improve the search and provide the best quality online service to our businesses and the community. Social media sites are powerful communication tools. They are a platform in which stories can be told, awareness can be created and new ideas can be presented. The Denton Chamber of Commerce continues to increase its social media activity in order to utilize all these tools to their greatest advantage. Facebook and Twitter remain the strongest sites for the Chamber. Not only are they being used to promote events and celebrate businesses by sharing pho-

tos and information, but they are being utilized as a source for news including event reminders and occasional cancellations. WordPress and LinkedIn have been recent additions to the Denton Chamber of Commerce social media plan. Chamber news is beginning to unfold through WordPress blog posts by sharing stories from our chamber businesses. LinkedIn allows the Chamber to connect with professionals in the community as well as allow Chamber businesses to network with one another. Whatever the next innovation in technology will be, the Denton Chamber of Commerce is sure to keep up with it in order to remain the “front door” of this great community.

Denton. Original. Independent.
Mull it over for a minute. Look at the image; think about the words. What does it mean? What is it saying? A brand is not a logo or a tagline or a moniker. Rather, a brand is designed to capture the essence of a product. And the idea of branding is certainly nothing new. Ranchers have used brands to mark their livestock for centuries. No two are the same, each rancher having created his unique brand, many of which have remained solid and unchanged through generations. The brand is more than a mark on an animal, though. It makes a statement about the rancher, the size and scope of his herds, the quality and integrity of his product. Our brand is just like the rancher’s. It is conveying in a single image, the essence of our product, this place Denton, Texas. The brand development process is not a quick and easy one. Especially when attempting to brand a city as interesting and diverse as Denton is. Input from many community arenas over an extended period of time was essential. When the Denton Convention & Visitors Bureau rolled out this brand into the marketplace in
January 2012, our primary, external audience got it immediately. Those are prospective visitors who perceived from this image what they would feel about their experience when they visit Denton. Feedback was swift and continues to be positively right on the mark. The other important audience, perhaps more vital even than the visitors we work to attract, is us Dentonites. How we see ourselves is absolutely foundational to delivering the Denton that visitors believe they will find when they get here. If we don’t believe and
embrace it, why would they? Again, this brand image captures our sense of place so well that Dentonites see it and understand the message because every one of us is individually a part of it. The word “original” is a broad application in this brand. It’s more a description of spirit than physical attribute, though the spirit is manifested in the physical fabric of our city. The creative energy fueled by our universities, our arts community, the music industry, small business community, horse country - it drives originality and we embrace it into an original whole. Our downtown isn’t faux. We hold fast to our history while progressively moving ahead. We value originality within our place and among one another. Independent is more of the same spirit and springs from the same attributes as original. Consider the music scene, for example. Denton is known around the world for the music movement that’s been evolving for many years. Interestingly, though, there is not a specific

WE THE PEOPLE Vice president of economic development
New face in Denton for economic seat at the local chamber The Denton Economic Development Partnership has new leadership in the Denton Chamber of Commerce — Adam Gawarecki is now the vice president for economic development at the chamber. A graduate of the University of North Texas, Gawarecki said he is happy to be back in the area and a city he has loved for years. His passion for the city will help him in his new job, where he will primarily work to attract new business to the area. “I like the people, I like the quality of life and I honestly feel like it’s going to be a pretty easy sales pitch to companies who are expanding and looking at Texas, he said. Before coming back to Denton just a few weeks ago, Gawarecki served as vice president of business recruitment for the San Antonio Economic Development Foundation. The foundation in San Antonio is similarly structured to what exists in Denton, which gives Gawarecki an advantage here, said Aimee Bissett, director of economic development for the city. “He started a week ago and he’s just been a huge asset to the team immediately, she said. “He’s very proactive, has been coming up with new ideas and he’s ready to really step out there and start recruiting companies to Denton and updating our marketing plan. Prior to working in San Antonio, he spent six years working as a consultant with the World Economic Development Alliance, where he represented different communities and helped with marketing for new business attractions. “Having just moved to Denton this
month, I am excited for the opportunities that lie ahead in Economic Development, Gawarecki wrote in an e-mail. “I was a college graduate from UNT and moved away for several years. Obviously Denton has some characteristics that brought me back. “As the Denton Chamber’s economic development department’s role is to promote Denton’s exciting attributes to expanding and relocating businesses across the world, we plan to conduct many marketing initiatives including traveling to visit site location consultants and company executives in all regions of the country, attend conferences, tradeshows, and forums, conduct email marketing, and web and print advertising. “We will continue to keep getting Denton’s message out and plan to work many new expansion and relocation projects in the year to come, he wrote. He can be reached at vp@dentonedp.com. In his new position, Gawarecki said, he hopes to help with advertising and creating a new website, and start getting more businesses into spaces at the airport and industrial park by the end of the year. To do this, he plans to pitch the Denton story by explaining the culture and infrastructure to businesses across the country. “We’re like the marketing arm for the city, so it’s my job to attract new businesses here, he said. “Since I’ve started, we’re already looking for new prospects. By Jenna Duncan Staff Writer Denton Record-Chronicle

Career Planning Fair educates future workforce By Brianna Vela Denton Chamber of Commerce
The 2013-2014 program year marked the first annual Career Planning Fair for the Denton Chamber of Commerce. In November, local high school sophomores and juniors filed into the LaGrone Advanced Technology Complex to begin their adventure of exploring local colleges and career options. Since the initial planning stages, the Chamber’s goals of the fair were to educate students on careers offered in Denton by highlighting top industries and to promote programs available to obtain those careers at our local universities. Thanks to the combined educational partnerships of Denton ISD, Texas Woman’s University, University of North Texas and North Central Texas College, the pilot Career Planning Fair took flight. Booths from the educational sponsors as well as professional sponsors - Peterbilt, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton, City of Denton, Denton Regional Medical Center, Labinal and Sally Beauty Holdings Inc. surrounded the technology complex’s lobby. District 4 Denton City Councilman Joey Hawkins
FAMILY A LLERGY & ASTHMA CARE
served as keynote speaker. Hawkins began working as a businessman when he was 18 years old. Since then, he has managed and owned several businesses including local cafes like Jupiter House and Royal’s Bagels. “This event might change one of these kid’s lives and that’s the whole goal of this thing,” Hawkins said. “Start thinking about things younger and younger.” As he spoke and interacted with the students, Hawkins provided details about how he began his career while he was in high school. “Get going now. Don’t wait. Get to school. Work hard and have fun,” Hawkins said. “There is joy in that exhaustion.” Following the keynote address, high school sophomores and juniors were directed to various classrooms where they had the opportunity to hear from panelists in a wide variety of professional fields including business, healthcare, creative arts and humanities, education, law enforcement, social services, science, technology, engineering and math. Students also heard from panelists representing UNT, TWU and NCTC. Not only did the teens gain educational and professional career advice through these panel dis-
cussions, but they were encouraged to ask any questions they had. Ryan High School junior Mitzy Gonzalez said she has already been thinking about her future career, but has needed help on deciding what college to attend. “If you start thinking about your career too late, then you won’t be able to take the right tests or register for the right classes,” Gonzalez said. “Events like this are helping me make up my mind about college and figuring out a class schedule.” The opportunities for an excellent education and a future career in Denton are immense. The Denton Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all of the sponsors, panelists, moderators and volunteers who participated in this event. The Denton Chamber of Commerce looks forward to growing this initiative in future years as a means of helping Denton ISD students make better informed decisions about their future as well as providing Denton businesses with a strong and qualified workforce. Those interested in participating in the second annual Career Planning Fair are encouraged to contact the Chamber at 940-382-9693.

Denton “Denton sound” that anyone can identify in a word. That is the result of original and independent. The sound is a combination of individual sounds where writers, musicians, poets and venues have their own messages, rhythms, tunes and atmospheres, and listeners get the entire breadth, as varied or not as they choose. DentonRadio.com has evolved into a vital vehicle for serving up the original, independent music scene in an experiential way not possible in our marketing efforts before. In the surrounding horse country, we have the most diverse equine population and disciplines all in one area than anywhere else in the world. That’s independent. We each do what we do and we all do it here, beside and almost in tandem with one another, creating a vibrant and lively culture. And people come from around the globe to see the North Texas Horse Country up close. The weathered appearance of the brand is also a statement. Think about your favorite pair of jeans. They’re probably a bit worn-looking because they are your favorites and you wear them often. And they fit you perfectly, comfortably. So do mine. And they wouldn’t fit anyone else in just the same way. Our brand says that’s how Denton fits, too. During 2013, more areas across
Denton have embraced the original independent brand. Golden Triangle Mall, for instance, incorporated the brand’s essence into their new image after an extensive renovation. DentonRadio.com pipes original Denton music through the mall’s corridors and local artists entertain in person now and then. The original tunes remind shoppers that this mall is unique because it is yet another part of the cool Denton sense of place. Unicorn Lake began a music series last summer much like the Main Street Association’s long-running Twilight Tunes Series on the courthouse lawn. Coordinated by DentonRadio.com, business owners seek to identify with the original independent brand through Denton artists who deliver new audiences again and again to enjoy the music and discover Unicorn Lake’s offerings and amenities. Rayzor Ranch got in on the action with its own version of live local music Friday nights. The brand is widening its belt and permeating the entire city. That is our brand at work and working like it should – for the whole of Denton. Denton is a place where people are invested and engaged and have been for 150 years. We have grown together into this place. And together we will grow Denton into the future, hopefully never losing sight of who we are: Denton. Original. Independent.

WE THE PEOPLE
On Denton’s Horizon By Kim Phillips Denton Chamber of Commerce
convention center suitable to a city with the population and scope of Denton has been an initiative for the Chamber of Commerce and for the City of Denton for nearly a decade. Finally, on December 10, 2013, the Denton City Council, the University of North Texas and a private developer, O’Reilly Hospitality, formally approved an agreement, a partnership, to build a 100,000-squarefoot convention center with a full service hotel attached. This facility is a game-changer for Denton, one that will absolutely advance Denton tourism with remarkable impact. The Denton Convention Center (DCC) will be built on UNT land next to the Apogee Stadium. For Dentonites familiar with this location, the Radisson Hotel once stood there. The center, along with a multi-story Embassy Suites by Hilton full-service hotel, will overlook Apogee — its topography and design complementary to that which is already there. Outdoor space and verandas will offer guests coveted views of the stadium and beau-

tiful vistas of Denton. The Denton Convention & Visitors Bureau will play a major role in the convention center piece of this new amenity. Already, CVB staff members are actively involved in shaping the floor plans for the convention space, offering advice on everything from ballrooms to break-out rooms. Input regarding office space is key since a prime role of the CVB sales team will be marketing the convention center to attract meeting planners and conventioneers to hold their events in Denton — the most exciting, up-and-coming Texas destination. The CVB’s emphasis is always to tout the entire city. The size of the convention center will allow CVB sales to
focus on meeting and event populations of 1,500-2,000, unheard of in Denton until now. Conventions of this size will impact many more than the one convention hotel, making guest room overflow and overall economic impact a city-wide benefit. This project will open the door to convention business currently directed to other cities due to lack of adequate space in Denton. As magnificent as the DCC will be, it is still just a building. What attracts delegates to utilize a building is its location. Denton is the draw, so furthering our brand and delivering it upon arrival will continue to be the secret of our success. Along that line of reasoning and on the near horizon is an experiential visitor center for Denton. This vision was born from the Leadership Denton class of 2012. For their class project, these future leaders elected to benchmark Denton against cities of similar size and proximity to major metropolitan areas specifically relative to their visitor interaction points. Their final presentation was an

Horizon impressive business plan for a Denton CVB official visitor center and Denton store in the downtown district. The CVB team seized the project with enthusiasm. An effect of being an original independent destination often lost on Dentonites is the fact that visitors seeking the Denton experience are not always astute at finding it. Our brand promises this cool, customizable vibe. So, how do they get into it? A truly experiential visitor center is the perfect solution. Since the class presentation, CVB staff has been on a quest to find a location in the downtown area that allows space and visibility to accomplish this mission. The vision set forth in the business plan encompasses much more than brochure racks on a wall. The class envisioned a Denton store selling found-nowhere-else Denton-centric souvenir items, local artists’ wares and tickets to local events as revenue to fund the project. The concept involves fun and engaging visitor experi-
ences that introduce guests to the Denton vibe and leaves them hungry for more. Additionally, the center will engage Dentonites, injecting knowledge and pride about Denton, thereby enhancing local engagement and developing ambassadors for Denton at every level in the community. The Denton Visitor Center project has evolved to be inclusive of other Denton organizations with similar missions: DentonRadio.com, the Denton Main Street Association and Denton Economic Development for starters. And the project has feet. The collaborative agreement that Denton is long overdue for such a venue is openly acknowledged across city leadership. Like the convention center project, it has become an initiative of the Chamber, the City and even our citizens. It is in the works and will definitely come to fruition when the right place meets the right time. That time is sooner than later. These are two grand initiatives for the CVB as we look to the future. Already, the world is naming us the Texas destination to watch. Denton has an original independent sense of place that our brand

The CVB’s goal is to provide the best possible access to and management of the Denton experience for every guest. The convention
center and visitor center projects are the optimum vehicles for growing tourism in Denton and plugging all visitors into their own Denton adventure.

WE THE PEOPLE Reaccreditation process underway for chamber The Denton Chamber of Commerce reaccreditation committee recently kicked off for the current year’s accreditation process with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The purpose of the U.S. Chamber’s Accreditation Program is to facilitate continuing excellence in the chamber industry and to foster a probusiness environment across America. More than 800 chambers have participated in the program since 1964, among which only 217 currently remain accredited — approximately 3 percent of all of the 6,936 chambers of commerce across the United States. The chamber, which has earned threeand four-star ratings, is working with a new format this year and broadening the scope of what they provide for review with additional committee members. From technology to programs to collaboration, the chamber provides information that will earn it a star rating for the next five years. The process, committee members say, is a healthy way to review what the
chamber is doing. Jerry Mohelnitzky, who has worked on reaccreditation for the chamber in 2009, said the process gives the board and staff a chance to review what they are doing and the impact it has on the community. “By sitting down and doing this process, you really get into the purpose of it, he said. Achieving accreditation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is a prestigious honor that distinguishes high quality, expertise and strong leadership displayed by local chambers of commerce. The Denton Chamber of Commerce achieved its original accreditation in 1975, and is one of only 21 to maintain it continuously the past 40 years. “It says so much about an organization if you’re accredited, said Perry McNeill, who is chairing the reaccreditation committee for the Denton chamber this year. “It gives us credibility that we’ve gone through the process of an outside organization review of what we’re doing, he added.
