2016 Nissan Maxima sports bold new design Created by driving enthusiasts for driving enthusiasts, the dramatically styled 2016 Nissan Maxima looks like nothing else on the road today – and drives like nothing in the segment. The all-new Nissan flagship not only resets Maxima's iconic "4-Door Sports Car" positioning, it sets a new standard for style, performance and technology in the large sedan segment. The 2016 Maxima is offered in five well-equipped grade levels, including new SL, SR and Platinum grades. A virtual clone of the stunning Nissan Sport Sedan Concept, the new Maxima is 1.3 inches lower and 2.2 inches longer than the previous generation design. It is also lighter and offers greatly increased torsional rigidity, all of which help Maxima push the performance envelope in its segment. While the new Maxima's exterior projects a distinctive upscale look through its lower profile and wide stance, the heart of this newest generation 4-Door Sports Car is its completely revised 300-horsepower 3.5-liter VQ-series V6 engine and new performance-oriented Xtronic transmission. The engine utilizes more than 60 percent new parts (compared to the previous generation 3.5-liter V6), applying
lessons learned from the Nissan GT-R such as sodium filled valves, to achieve a high specific output of 85.7 horsepower/liter. The comprehensive re-engineering effort also resulted in a considerable 15 percent increase in highway fuel economy to 30 miles per gallon***. City fuel economy is rated at 22 mpg. Well-matched to the new powerplant is a new Xtronic transmission, which, with its lack of fixed ratios, affords the specific advantage of always being in the right gear at the right time. A wider gear ratio range allows for stronger acceleration from a standing start and an all-new DStep shifting logic allows rapid shifts at high throttle openings. An all-new shift logic holds rpm
when it detects high-G cornering, allowing for seamless re-acceleration on corner exit. The all-new Maxima also features for the first time a Drive Mode Selector (Sport and Normal modes) that adjusts throttle response, transmission tuning, steering feel and Active Sound Enhancement tuning. In Sport mode, the engine throttle response increases, the Xtronic transmission programming changes for more aggressive shifting under braking and gear holding, the steering weight increases and the Active Sound Enhancement system further amplifies the engine note in the cabin. The foundation for the new Maxima's enhanced handling
and ride comfort starts with a redesigned platform that features increased use of high strength steels, including the first use of 1.2GPa high strength steel in a Nissan sedan. This allows the 2016 Maxima to not only boast a 25 percent improvement in torsional rigidity, but also contributes to an 82-pound weight reduction (versus the previous generation), giving Maxima a better power-toweight ratio** than a BMW 335i or Acura TLX V6. The suspension is an indesubframe-mounted pendent strut/coil spring design in front. In the rear is an independent multi-link double wishbone design with ZF Sachs dampers. The rear dampers features a
monotube design, often found in performance applications, for enhanced performance and fade resistance. Large stabilizer bars are found front (26.0 mm) and rear (26.5 mm). Responsive braking is provided by 4-wheel power-assisted vented disc brakes, standard 4wheel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. Steering is provided by a vehicle speed-sensitive hydroelectric power-assisted steering (HEPS) steering system. Maxima comes with standard 18-inch machined finish aluminum-alloy wheels with painted inserts and 245/45R18 all-season tires. For the ultimate 4-Door
Sport Car enthusiast, the new SR trim was conceived with the specific goal of pushing Maxima's performance boundaries further than ever before. The Maxima SR-exclusive hardware starts with unique suspension damper tuning and a larger front stabilizer bar. Monotube rear dampers, which provide better high-temperature fade resistance than twin-tube designs and are typically found on higher-end sports cars, were originally specified for the SR grade only. The development team found that the benefit of the monotube dampers was so significant that the damper design was carried across to all grades of Maxima. The Maxima SR-exclusive performance upgrade also includes a Performance Chassis Damper, which is installed on the front section of the chassis to help quell high frequency vibration in the body that can result from the stiffer suspension. A similar damper is used on the Nissan 370Z NISMO. In addition, the Dual Panel Panoramic Moonroof offered on Maxima SL and Platinum grades was eliminated to help lower the SR’s center of gravity and further enhance torsional rigidity (versus moonroof-equipped models). -nissannews.com
Steps to keep your car up and running Getting your vehicle ready for winter while temperatures are still mild is a proactive approach to preventive maintenance that helps ensure safety, reliability and fewer unexpected repairs when severe winter weather strikes. Whether you do it yourself or take your car to a professional service technician, the non-profit Car Care Council recommends 10 basic maintenance procedures during Fall Car Care Month to keep your vehicle operating at its very best. 1. Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, brake and transmis-
sion as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant. 2. Check the hoses and belts to make sure they are not cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or showing signs of excessive wear. 3. Check the battery and replace if necessary. Make sure the connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free. 4. Check the brake system annually and have the brake linings, rotors and drums inspected at each oil change. 5. Inspect the exhaust system for leaks, damage and broken supports or hangers if there is an unusual noise. Ex-
haust leaks can be dangerous and must be corrected without delay. 6. Check engine performance to make sure it is delivering the best balance of power and fuel economy and producing the lowest level of emissions. 7. Check the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system as proper heating and cooling performance is critical for interior comfort and for safety reasons such as defrosting. 8. Inspect the steering and suspension system annually including shock absorbers, struts and chassis parts such
as ball joints, tie rod ends and other related components. 9. Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots. 10. Check the wipers and lighting so that you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and replace worn wiper blades so you can see clearly when driving during precipitation. Ford F-150 continues to innovate The 2016 Ford F-150, part of Ford F-Series, America’s bestselling truck for 38 years, continues to innovate with the addition of breakthrough towing technology, new Special Edition Appearance Packages, SYNC 3 and alternative fuel capability. ll-new Pro Trailer Backup Assist makes it easier for drivers of all skill levels to back a trailer up to launch a boat or park in a driveway. The segment-first technology allows customers to steer a trailer instinctively by turning a knob left or right to indicate direction; the truck controls its steering and limits vehicle speed. Ford engineers developed the system leveraging advanced camera technology and tested it for almost a decade. Ford earned five patents for the technology along the way, with 10 more pending. The Special Edition Packages for XLT and Lariat further personalize F-150 to customer tastes, adding all-new unique 20-inch premium anodized dark-painted aluminum wheels with red sport lettering, black running boards, smoked headlamps, unique bodyside graphics and badging, special edition seats with Alcantara® inserts, red contrast stitching and red bolsters, and unique red stitching on the steering wheel, transmission gear selector boot and instrument panel. This package also features a dark anodized
grille with black mesh on XLT while the Lariat dark anodized grille receives red accents. F-150 also features SYNC 3 – Ford’s newest communications and entertainment system that
features enhanced voice recognition, high-speed performance and capacitive touch screen and easier-to-understand graphical interface. Responding to customer re-
quests, the 2016 Ford F-150 with the 5.0-liter V8 engine will offer a gaseous-fuel prep option, making it the only light-duty pickup capable of running on compressed natural gas or pro-
pane. New features • Other changes for the 2016 F-150 include: • Shadow Black replaces Tuxedo Black
• Lithium Gray replaces Guard Metallic • 20-inch machined aluminum wheels with painted silver pockets available on XL -media.ford.com
Safety features you may not know about Today’s vehicles come with an abundance of new features and technologies that can aid drivers, make passengers more comfortable and provide real-time information about a vehicle’s health. Most importantly, many vehicle technologies today are designed with safety in mind and have the potential to save lives. The trouble is, too many drivers do not realize these features exist, or know how to use them to their full potential. A recent University of Iowa study found 40 percent of drivers have been startled or surprised by something their vehicle has done -- a troubling finding given that car crashes are a leading cause of
preventable death in the United States. “Technology can be a game-changer when it comes to safety,” said Deborah A.P. Hersman, president and CEO of the National Safety Council. “In order to fully recognize the benefits of these new systems, drivers need to be aware of them and also understand their limitations.” With this need in mind, NSC partnered with the University of Iowa to launch “My Car Does What” -- a virtual owner’s manual that demystifies the latest, most cutting-edge vehicle features. The campaign’s website, www.MyCarDoesWhat.org, highlights technologies such as: • Back-up cameras that provide a view of the
blind zone directly behind the car when the vehicle is in reverse • Blind spot monitors that alert drivers when something is in their blind spot • Forward collision warnings that warn drivers when they are closing in on the vehicle ahead too quickly • Automatic emergency braking systems that apply the brakes if the system detects an imminent collision • Anti-lock braking systems that prevent wheels from locking up, helping to avoid uncontrolled skidding and providing some steering control in slippery conditions
• Rear cross traffic alerts that warn drivers if traffic is approaching from the left or right when the vehicle is in reverse • Adaptive cruise control that maintains the speed set by the driver and a pre-set following distance • Lane departure warnings that alert drivers if they drift into another lane when the turn signal is not activated. “The driver will always be a car’s best safety feature; no technology today will change that,” Hersman said. “But these features can help mitigate errors before they result in deaths and injuries.” -StatePoint

Maxda CX-3 ready for adventure Smartly designed and capable of handling many of life’s adventures, the 2016 Mazda CX-3 is the fifth vehicle introduced to the U.S. with KODO—Soul of Motion design and showcasing the full suite of Mazda’s signature SKYACTIV Technology. Debuting at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show, CX-3 was developed to “Create the standard for the next era.” It’s a vehicle designed to meet the needs of a new generation of car buyers, supporting creative, adventurous lifestyles wherever – from the urban sprawl to the weekend getaway. “The 2016 CX-3 is the next evolution of our mission to meld style, driving enjoyment and efficiency into a vehicle that demonstrates drivers don’t need to compromise to get what they want,” said Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO). “CX-3 was designed to deliver all of the fun and technology of our larger models but at a price in the market where it will be a draw for buyers of all backgrounds. It is truly a vehicle that will help set the pace for its newly emerging segment.” CX-3 is shorter and lower than Mazda’s best-selling CX-5 and delivers uncompromised versatility with available predictive i-ACTIV all-wheel drive, a punchy 146-horsepower, 2.0-liter SKYACTIV-G engine and Mazda’s full suite of i-ACTIVSENSE safety features optional-
ly available, including lane-departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, Smart Brake Support, rear camera, Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) and Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC). Yet, CX-3 is more than the sum of its parts. It is a vehicle tailored to deliver a rich, inviting experience not just for its driver, but also for its passengers, with rear seats set slightly inboard to ease conversation between front and rear passengers. It is a vehicle with interior details and materials that look and feel as elegant as they are forward-thinking, from the dark red seat stitching to the soft touch materials. And it is a vehicle that carries
itself with style, with a long hood, short overhangs, large wheels and a slim cabin, presenting proportions that lend themselves to a sense of strength and vitality. It’s a design that looks as though it’s in motion even when it’s not. Attention to detail sets CX-3 apart The subcompact crossover segment is growing quickly, but CX-3 stands alone with its attention to detail and purposeled ergonomics. Standard inside CX-3 is a push-button starter and Mazda Connect infotainment offering Bluetooth phone pairing, audio streaming, USB ports for phone charging and entertainment connectivity and
Commander control knob, as well as a seven-inch color touchscreen interface – all means of keeping connected in a quickpaced environment. Mazda Connect also features SMS text message audio delivery and reply, voice command and Aha/Stitcher/Pandora/HD radio connectivity. CX-3 feels distinctly “Mazda,” from its materials to its layout that puts the driver and passenger comfort and control above all else. Yet, it charts new territory with an intimate environment designed to feel timeless and personalized, catering to those who sweat the details and crave not just a mode of transportation but an experi-
ence and expression of their personalities. Curb appeal aplenty CX-3 exudes a sense of confidence and maturity with bold looks and beautiful proportions. Upfront, a pronounced grill borders in a signature wing. This element lends a sense of flow to the body and looks as though it were formed from a single piece of metal, and the body’s overall proportions are not fettered by conventional classifications of vehicle type. Achieving CX-3’s design involved an uncompromising approach to refining the proportions that form the foundation of its beauty and painstaking efforts to eliminate every unneces-
sary element. For the interior, a concerted effort to achieve the appropriate ambience and fine textures of the materials lends itself to a high-quality cabin. Exterior The front view of the CX-3 is designed to present a bold look that suits the model’s stylish proportions. The grille stacks seven fins with available silver-painted front edges to create an expression of concentrated energy that flows horizontally. The signature wing grille surround is stout and three-dimensional, as if machined from solid metal. It forms the starting point for a powerful sense of speed that flows across the entire body. The headlamp layout positions the turn signals outside the main headlamp unit to create a narrow, sharp design that as if they were eyes gazing forward. The tips of the signature-wing extend into the headlamps with an integrated available LED illumination line. This connects seamlessly with the lighting signature that surrounds the low beams, accentuating CX-3’s taut lines. With the peak of the front fenders pushed rearward to lie beneath the base of the A-pillars, the side view of CX-3 conveys a sense of extended body size. Careful attention was devoted to creating the rich expression and subtle changes in each of the body surfaces. -mazdausamedia
Lights out? Check vehicle lighting Fall is here and its arrival means fewer hours of daylight and upcoming holiday travel. Before hitting the road, it is a wise idea to make sure your vehicle’s lights are in proper working order, says the non-profit Car Care Council. “Lights play a critical role in safe driving, as the chance of an accident increases if you can’t see or be seen,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “From the driver’s seat you may not notice a light that isn’t working, so inspect all of your car’s lights and replace those that are out.” Lights are normal wear items that require periodic inspection and replacement. The vehicle
lighting system provides nighttime visibility; signals and alerts other drivers; and supplies light for viewing instruments and the vehicle’s interior. In addition to replacing dimming, rapidly blinking and non-functioning lights, the following tips can help keep you safe: Keep headlights, tail lights and signal lights clean. External dirt and debris can dim operational lights from being seen by others. Make sure that your headlights are properly aimed. Misaimed headlights blind other drivers and reduce your ability to see the road. If there is any doubt on whether or not your
headlights should be on, turn them on. Lights not only help you see better in early twilight, they also make it easier for other drivers to see you. Don’t overdrive your headlights; you should be able to stop inside the illuminated area, otherwise you are creating a blind crash area in front of your vehicle. “Some states have laws that require the headlights to be on with the wipers,” said White. “Keeping your vehicle’s lights properly cared for and replacing wiper blades periodically will help ensure a safer ride, keeping the road ahead well-lit and giving you a clear view.”

Cadillac ATS-V expands product line The first-ever ATS-V – offered as a coupe and sedan – introduces class-leading twin-turbocharged power and a comprehensive suite of design and performance systems, expanding the ATS product line and advancing the V-Series legacy with its first turbocharged entry. Since its inception in 2004, Cadillac’s V-Series has driven remarkable power and performance capability into the brand’s growing luxury car range. Building on the strengths of the award-winning ATS product line, the V-Series adds impressive track capability to what was already the lightest and most agile-driving car in the luxury compact class. The result is a dual-purpose luxury performer – a car with true track capability right from the factory that is also a sophisticated luxury car on the road. “Cadillac’s V-Series is the best
example of Cadillac’s emerging product substance – and the purest expression of the passion at the core of the brand,” said Johan de Nysschen, Cadillac President. The ATS-V is powered by the first-ever twin-turbocharged engine in a V-Series. Rated at an SAE-certified 464 horsepower (346 kW) and 444 lb-ft of torque (601 Nm), the engine is the segment’s highest-output six-cylinder and enables 0-60 performance in 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 189 mph. It is backed by a six-speed manual – with Active Rev Match, no-lift shifting and launch control – or a paddle-shift eight-speed automatic transmission featuring launch control and Performance Algorithm Shift. The Cadillac Twin Turbo engine supports comprehensively redesigned chassis, suspension and drivetrain systems devel-
oped to make the ATS-V one of the most agile, responsive and confident luxury performance cars on the market. An interior with high-performance seats and ergonomics focused on the driver’s interfaces with key features for performance driving.“As the smallest and lightest V-Series ever, the ATS-V forges a great connection with the driver, with exceptional nimbleness and responsiveness,” said David Leone, Cadillac executive chief engineer. “It’s adaptable to the driver’s preferences, with every selectable mode developed to deliver the best performance for all types of driving scenarios, including the track.” A Performance Data Recorder onboard the ATS-V allows drivers to record high-definition video, with data overlays, of their driving experiences on and off the track, enabling sharing on social media.
First twin-turbocharged V-Series With a more powerful iteration of Cadillac’s Twin Turbo 3.6L V-6, the ATS-V represents the first twin-turbo powertrain in the history of the V-Series lineup. Exclusive features for the ATS-V version of the Twin Turbo are designed to make power faster and sustain it longer. A high-performance lubrication

2016 Kia Soul adds style The extremely popular Soul ups its “wow” factor for the 2016 model year with a host of new style and convenience features, some of which actually debuted on the K900 luxury sedan. In addition, owners can further express their unique individualism through a new Designer Collection that plays up the Soul’s funloving attitude with a two-tone paint scheme. Three unique trim levels (Base, Plus, and Exclaim) remain, and each one adds new features for the 2016 model year. Alloy wheels now come standard across all models. Meanwhile, Base models equipped with the Convenience Package add a 4.3-inch color touchscreen, SiriusXM®2 satellite radio, and integrated Rear Camera Display3. The standard features list grows for the Plus model, which now gets gloss black bumper
“tusks,” fog lights, and integrated Rear Camera Display3. A new Designer Collection package, inspired by its all-electric sibling, brings new style with two visually striking two-toned color combinations: white with a red roof, or red with a black roof. In addition, the Designer Collection also adds 18-inch alloy wheels with black spokes, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearshift knob. The Exclaim
now comes standard with leather-trimmed seats. Also new to Exclaim is the Premium Package, which elevates the driving experience with desirable convenience features including Forward Collision Warning System (FCWS)1 and Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS)1, both of which are new to the Soul. The camera-based LDWS helps to monitor the Soul’s position and provides visual and auditory
warnings to the driver when the vehicle begins to drift too close to the lane markers. Other creature comforts that come as part of the Premium Package include navigation4, an upgraded Infinity®5audio system, string-LED front speaker surround mood lighting, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front driver and passenger seats, seat heaters for all four outboard positions, a 10way power adjustable driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped and heated steering wheel, and a leather-wrapped gearshift knob. The optional interior Umber Color Package, which is available with either the Shadow Black, Titanium, Fathom Blue or Cloud White exterior colors, now benefits from HID projector headlights for the 2016 model year. Also included with the option package is premium Nappa leather seating surfaces. -kiamedia
rotating inertial load by 51 percent, compared to conventional Inconel turbine wheels. That means less exhaust energy is wasted in stored inertial loads. In practical terms, that means the relatively small size of the turbochargers and their lightweight turbines foster more immediate “spooling,” which virtually eliminates lag. -media.cadillac.com
