Editor’s note “Success in business requires training and discipline and hard work. But if you’re not frightened by these things, the opportunities are just as great today as they ever were.” — David Rockefeller
T
o Our Readers: Welcome to the 22nd annual edition of Best of Denton, a guide to the most outstanding businesses in our fair city. Earlier this year, more than 10,000 people cast ballots to propel their favorite businesses into the winner’s circle. Undoubtedly, you’ve seen the Denton Record-Chronicle’s blue-ribbon plaque or banner displayed at dozens of businesses across the city. Owners of those establishments are proud of the recognition, and rightly so. We understand that satisfaction is not always guaranteed when you patronize a business, but experience tells us that the winners listed in these pages provide consistent value to their customers day in and day out. As Mr. Rockefeller pointed out, they have worked hard, trained their em-
ployees well and are now reaping success. And, most importantly, they are creating satisfied customers. We hope you will put this magazine in a prominent place in your home. Use it as a guide to finding a good meal or a good cocktail. Use it to find the best place to repair your car or take your loved one for medical care. Need a day care center? Get a recommendation here. In the mood for a night of live music? You’ll find a “best bet” in this magazine. The Best of Denton is one of many ways the Denton Record-Chronicle provides you with valuable information about life in North Texas. Finally, for those of you who prefer to get your information online, go to DentonRC. com to find Best of Denton. You can also find it on our website as a PDF document, which is an exact electronic replica of the magazine. Thanks to those of you who took time to vote. Most of all, thanks to the hundreds of businesses that make Denton a better place to live. Scott K. Parks, Managing Editor

The word “wash” appears twice in The Wash Factory Car Wash’s name, so you can pretty much rest assured that your car will come out sparkling clean when it runs through Denton’s only ride-through car wash. Since opening just four years ago, The Wash Factory has evolved as a Denton favorite because it offers a simple service: a high-quality car wash at a reasonable price. A ride through The Wash Factory takes just minutes and you drive away knowing your vehicle has been thoroughly cleaned and dried top to bottom. Maybe the best part of The Wash Factory experience is the free vacuum service that comes with the purchase of a car wash. Pull your freshly cleaned car into a vacuum bay, and you can use one of their powerful vacuums to make sure the interior of your ride is as nice as the sparkling clean

BARS & NIGHTLIFE BEST BARTENDING STAFF & BEST PATIO OAK STREET DRAFTHOUSE & COCKTAIL PARLOR 308 E. Oak St. 940-435-0404 http://oakstreetdrafthouse.com
Oak Street Drafthouse & Cocktail Parlor is long on charm. The downtown Denton bar is set inside a Victorian house, with its rooms made into comfortable sitting areas furnished with antiques and an eclectic collection of art and knickknacks. Readers gave the bar a thumbs-up for both the bartenders and the incomparable patio. The bartenders serve from a bar with 48 taps inside, and about 22 from the patio bar. OSDHCP serves about 100 bottled beers and a changing menu of cocktails. The bartenders are ready with suggestions, and the first 24 taps are reserved for Texas brews. The bar has been the host for the unveiling of local brews from Armadillo Ale Works, and it promotes craft brews with a passion. Readers have a special spot in their hearts for the sprawling patio, a quaint spot behind a white picket fence.
East Side Denton Locals especially love the patio because it’s open to their dogs (a patron recently mentioned on Twitter that there were “more dogs than people” on one of the first sunny days of spring). And it’s not uncommon for the patio to be fairly full during warmer months. Runner-up: East Side Social Club Bragging rights: Paschall Bar Best Patio Runner-up: East Side Denton Bragging rights: LSA Burger Co.
BEST BEER SELECTION & BEST BAR EAST SIDE DENTON 117 E. Oak St. http://eastsidedenton.com
East Side Denton has a lot going for it. The Oak Street bar has a cool patio, friendly and attentive barkeeps and a nice selection of beers — out of nearly 90 taps, 60 of them dispense Texas beers. Drink local and drink often, as the say-
ing should go. East Side is a small, manageable joint. It’s a popular destination for the college set, as well as a spot where the young professionals (and the not-so-young professionals) congregate for a cold drink — and sometimes a special brew from an infuser behind the bar. (Ever had a beer infused with fresh peppers?) Readers voted East Side as the city’s best bar because the bartenders are quick with recommendations (we asked for a savory brew with a buttery taste and got an excellent pour) and the rounds are affordable. East Side supplements its hefty rows of taps with roughly 130 bourbons, whiskeys and scotches. If you’re lucky, you might be able to pair your drink with a treat from one of Denton’s food trucks — Austin Street Truck Stop is just over the back fence. East Side is a smoke-free space inside. Dogs are welcome on the patio. The taps are open from noon to 2 a.m. Runner-up: Oak Street Drafthouse & Cocktail Parlor Bragging rights: The Abbey Inn Restaurant & Pub Best Bar Runner-up: Oak Street Drafthouse & Cocktail Parlor Bragging rights: LSA Burger Co.

Just about every night for the last 13 years, Dan’s Silverleaf has been both a coveted venue for established musicians and bands from all over the country and an incubator for the local indie music scene. It’s not the biggest bar in town, but between smart booking by owner Dan Mojica and staffers Nate Peirce and Isaac Hoskins and a keen sound engineer in Jimmy Smith, Dan’s Silverleaf will give you a good show. Dan’s was among the first local music venues to push smokers outside, and it guards the work of local creatives fiercely — A Taste of Herb developed a razor-sharp live set in tribute to Herb Alpert & Tijuana Brass at the bar, and Denton’s Day of the Dead Festival was born at the humble space where founder and composer David Pierce started staging Cirque du Horror, an original Halloween musical variety show.

Enjoying a taste of wine these days is much more than popping a cork — or maybe unscrewing a cap for those on a more restricted budget! — and grabbing a glass and taking a sip. Nope, these days enjoying wine has become an experience. And nobody does it better, according to our voters, than Wine Squared. For nearly 10 years, the good folks at Wine Squared (they’re located on the downtown Square, get it?) have been providing customers with not only a top-shelf selection of great wine options, but also a depth of wine knowledge that’s hard to match. The small shop’s friendly staff has a passion for wine and will help customers select just the right wine in a fun, relaxed experience. Their expertise on wine lists will help you pick the perfect wine for a special occasion or meal. And don’t think you’ll run into any wine snobbery either, as the Wine Squared staff’s goal is simply to create a fun and informative wine experience. Thank You Denton!
There’s no shortage of music lessons in
Denton. The city is, after all, home to a large music school at University of North Texas. Without leaving the city limits, locals can study voice and just about any instrument that suits their fancy. Readers rate the UNT String Program as the best place in town to wrap your brain and your hands around a violin, viola, cello or double bass. The program’s scope is limited to children in second through eighth grade. “Learning to play a stringed instrument and belonging to the UNT String Project opens up a whole new world of friendship and fun,” director Rebecca Roesler says. “The opportunities for playing a stringed instrument in school and even after high school are abundant, with many universities offering scholarships just for orchestra participation.” The string program teaches more than music. Children in the program learn selfdiscipline, cooperation, problem-solving, goal-setting and self-expression. The program’s officials said they’ve gotten praise for both the music and the relationships formed with their young students’ families. “We’d like to think that we are doing a good job educating the community’s children and providing a wonderful musical experience for them,” Roesler said. “However, it’s important to note that the families we work with have always been so support-

They want their customers to feel welcome and a sense of comfort when they order a meal to start their day. The owner says that two things make Old West Cafe unique: the people, from the management team to the guests; and that the cafe is family-owned and operated. The livelihood of Old West is the livelihood of its employees, and this translates into its unique warmth. Without the people, they say it would just be a big, empty building with no one to serve.

It hasn’t taken long for pizza lovers to establish Mellow Mushroom Pizza Bakers as a downtown favorite, where the restaurant’s namesake offering is just one part of what makes lunch or dinner a special event there. Sure, their pizzas are the main attraction. But in the four years that it has been baking specialty pies in Denton, Mellow
Mushroom also has become quite proud of its menu, which it unashamedly boasts of being nothing short of “amazing.” A full range of salads, hoagies, calzones, soups and appetizers are also available for those not in the mellow mood for a pizza. Located just east of the Square, Mellow Mushroom makes sure its customers feel welcomed the moment they step in the front door. If the smell of all those freshly baked pizzas doesn’t get you in a good — mellow? — mood, then the friendly atmosphere will surely point you in that direction. Hoochies has been a staple in the Denton community for about two and a half years, and the move last July to Hickory Street is what Sam Solomon, one of the eatery’s three owners, said put their eatery on the map. “We are very, very proud to have won,” Solomon said. “We’ve been a runner-up in the past so we are really honored to win this year.” Solomon said the restaurant prides itself on dishing up “made from scratch daily” menu items one could expect from South Texas, Louisiana and even south of the border with its Mexican shrimp cocktail and ceviche. “We have a good product, good service and there is a zaniness fun factor that washes over the customer as they come in that

Longtime Denton institution Andre “Frenchy” Rheault for years has worked sun up to sun down keeping local lawns looking great as owner of Frenchy's Lawy and Tree Service. In fact, he said he tries “to make sure every yard we do looks as good as mine when we are finished.” He and his orange-clad staff have been doing just that for decades now, establishing themselves as Denton's most experienced and accomplished business when it comes all things related to lawn maintenance services. Frenchy's, of course, offers much more than merely mowing grass or trimming trees. In serious need of some edging or weed eating? Frenchy's can handle it. Planning a flower bed or garden that
needs to be tilled? Frenchy's can do that, too. Got some fertilizer to spread? Not a problem for Frenchy. Or may you simply want to plant some new flowers or bushes — Frenchy's does that, also. For years, Frenchy's Lawn and Tree Service has prided itself on more than its unique stable of orange-painted vans and trucks. Frenchy believes treating his customers with reliable and professional service while paying close attention to detail and never cutting corners is what's made his business a success. One thing’s certain: Whatever type or brand of wine you’re looking for, it probably can be found among the aisles and aisles of offerings at Metzler’s. Sure, they still offer hungry customers great food in a comfortable surrounding at both of their Denton locations, but Metzler’s also has on display one of Denton’s most extensive and exciting lineup of wines. In fact, don’t be in a rush when shopping for an old favorite or a new challenge at Metzler’s because the variety of wines you’ll find there deserves a patient search through the well-stocked aisles. Metzler’s prides itself on being a onestop food and beverage store with good products at fair prices. But it’s the selection that will win wine lovers over. Longtime customers who cast their ballots already
know this, and new customers will quickly agree once they check out the many wine options awaiting them at Metzler’s. Runner-up: Wine Squared Bragging rights: Vigne Wine Shop
