If you want things to stay the same, Denton County is not the place for you. The city of Denton and the expanse of North Texas prairie that surrounds it is dynamic and rapidly changing. Sherry and Rick Cunningham, a retired couple, recently moved from Kerrville to Denton to be close to family. They love it despite the heavy traffic and highway construction. "All of us know to keep improving, new improvements must be made," Sherry says. "Sometimes we just have to 'suffer to be beautiful,' as my mother used to say. It's the end result that counts." Sherry and Rick are building a house in Denton. They've found their bank, church and favorite restaurants. They appreciate the A Train that connects Denton to Dallas and to all points in between. The most important thing to know about Denton is this: Interstate 35E connects Denton to Dallas. Interstate 35W connects Denton to Fort Worth. But Den-

ton is not a suburb of either big city. It has stood alone and independent for more than 150 years. The historic courthouse on the square has become Denton's heart. But the city's brain can be found at the University of North Texas and at Texas Woman's University. One can almost see the youthful, creative vibrations as they emanate from those college campuses and radiate throughout North Texas. As the Cunninghams have discovered, Denton has much to offer newcomers of all ages. The annual Arts and Jazz Festival at Quakertown Park draws more than 100,000 visitors to the city. The eclectic music scene reaches a crescendo each year with 35 Denton, a showcase of local, regional and national indie bands, The city’s growth marches upward. Denton's population reached 125,000 last year, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates. The county population has soared to

730,000. As the national economy continues to improve, so does Denton. New businesses seem to spring up daily. Peterbilt and Sally Beauty, two internationally known companies, call Denton home. Major companies have placed regional distribution centers in Denton, and more are considering relocation to Denton County. Downtown continues to blossom with business and residential mixed-use developments, offering an opportunity to live, work and play in the center of the city. But Denton is not just about work, play and college educations. A robust roster of nonprofit organizations, led by United Way and Serve Denton, offer opportunities for volunteerism and assisting those in need. Denton is much more than a destination. For some, it's a great place to visit. For others, like the Cunningham's, it's a place to call home.

What you need to know By Randy Cummings

For the Denton Record-Chronicle

If you're reading this it probably means you're a newcomer to Denton. So, first things first: welcome to Denton! Denton is a great place to live. It's a growing community that offers a wide variety of friendly neighborhoods and all the urban conveniences you could want. Throughout the year Denton hosts numerous events covering all areas of interest, most notably the annual North Texas State Fair and Rodeo along with the Denton Arts and Jazz Festival. Denton's most recent estimated population stands at 123,099, making it the 26th most populous city in Texas and the 13th largest city in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Whether you have arrived here from another part of Texas or are coming here from out of state, there are some things you'll need to do to get settled in and make it feel like Denton truly is home. Whether it's a matter of getting your driver's license changed or figuring out where the nearest post office is, we're here to make your "todo" list a little easier. DRIVER'S LICENSE If you're new to Texas, a trip to the Department of Public Safety office is neces-

sary. A list of offices can be found on the agency's web site, www.txdps.state.tx.us. Bring your out-of-state license if you have one and proof of a Social Security number, which can be a Social Security card or one of many other official documents. Also, proof of Texas vehicle registration and liability insurance is required if you own a vehicle. If the out-of-state license is valid, the only required exam will be an eye test. If the license is expired, a written exam and driving test will also be administered. The standard fee for a Texas license ranges from $16-$25. Under Texas law, though, drivers who have accumulated at least three major moving violations or who have caused two or more accidents must pay a surcharge to renew their licenses. If moving within the state of Texas, you have 30 days to report the address change to the DPS. The paperwork can be obtained by visiting any DPS office, by emailing customerservicedl@txdps.state.tx.us and requesting a form, or by downloading the document from the DPS website and mailing it to the state. A $10 fee will be charged. VEHICLE REGISTRATION/INSPECTION Texas requires that all vehicles must be

registered and inspected annually. They must be inspected in the county in which they're registered. Inspections can be done at any number of local oil change businesses and repair garages. New legislation passed in 2013 now requires that registration of a vehicle is now dependent on obtaining a passing inspection. And in lieu of an inspection sticker, car owners now receive a vehicle inspection report (VIR), which is required to register a vehicle. To register a vehicle, you will need to go to the Denton County tax office located at 1505 E. McKinney St. in Denton with proof of vehicle ownership, inspection and insurance. If the vehicle is not in your name, proof of purchase must be provided. After the proper documentation is shown and the forms have been filled out, a fee will be charged based on the vehicle's year, make and model. License plates and a registration/inspection sticker will then be issued. Even if you have only moved within the state, you must notify the county tax office. Local universities educate students, entertain residents

By Britney Tabor Staff Writer

Denton County’s local universities and colleges wear several hats.

In addition to educating students, the county’s two state universities and community college host several concerts, exhibits, lectures and other events for local residents to attend throughout the year.

Texas Woman’s University

Texas Woman’s University, which has been in the Denton more than a century, has something to offer residents of all ages. The university is home to an art collection of more than 200 pieces that are available for viewing online and by tour on the Denton campus. Little Chapel in-the-Woods is considered TWU’s crown jewel by most locals. Constructed and dedicated by first lady Eleanor Roosevelt in 1939, the 110-seat interdenominational chapel features artwork designed and created by university students including stained-glass windows of “women ministering to human needs,” according to the university website. The facility was designed by architect O’Neil Ford and is designated “one of Texas’ 20 most outstanding architectural achievements by the Texas Society of Architects,” according to the TWU website. Unless reserved for a wedding or an event, the chapel is open to the general public, according to a university spokesperson. Hubbard Hall on the TWU campus in Denton houses a collection of photos and biographies of women who’ve been inducted into the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame. Also on display in Hubbard Hall are the gowns and clothing worn by Texas first la-

dies, dating back to the 1800s. Events hosted annually at the university include Global Awareness Month activities in the fall, the Boo at the U Fall Festival in October and the TWU Arts Triangle Walking Tour in the spring. For more information on attractions and events at TWU, visit www.twu.edu.

University of North Texas

UNT was first established in 1890. Annually more than 1,000 concerts are hosted on the Denton campus, according to a university spokesperson. From concerts featuring university student musicians to big names in music, the university offers a variety of performances. Throughout the year, several art pieces are on display at the university and at its gallery, UNT on the Square, located at 109 N. Elm St., in downtown Denton. UNT is home to Mean Green Athletics, and throughout the year hosts several sporting events including football, basketball, soccer, softball and track and field. As part of its continuing education offerings, the university offers opportunities for individuals to travel the country and the world with a UNT faculty member through its Travel-Learn program. For more information on offerings available to the public at UNT, visit www.unt.edu.

North Central Texas College

North Central Texas College has two Denton County campuses. They are located at 1500 N. Corinth St. in Corinth and 1200

Parker Square in Flower Mound. For more information on events hosted at the campus and open to the general public, visit www.nctc.edu.

Whether it’s high school, college or professional sports, Denton is home to top-tier talent for high schools, college athletics and is about 30 miles from the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, Dallas Stars, Dallas Mavericks and FC Dallas. The University of North Texas can be clearly seen from Interstate 35E with the fairly new football stadium Apogee Stadium. Texas Woman’s University is also located a few miles away from UNT. At UNT, recent success in football was truly seen after defeating University of Nevada Las Vegas 36-14 in the 2014 Heart of Dallas Bowl. Across from Apogee stadium is the Snake Pit, where the UNT men and women’s basketball teams compete, as well as the volleyball team. Texas Woman’s University has the large Kitty Magee Arena to catch a Pioneers’ basketball and volleyball game. Their prestigious gymnastics program also competes there as well. Denton offers year-round visual, performing arts By Lucinda Breeding Staff Writer

One thing you should have a hard time feeling in Denton is bored. The growing college town is home to a growing group of creative people who paint, sculpt, make music and storm the live theater stage with big ideas. Music Denton has drawn comparisons to Austin for decades not just because it’s home to a major state university. Denton is likened to Austin because it incubates so many professional musicians and refines the musical palate of thousands of fans. Between the Winspear Hall and the Lyric Theatre inside the Lucille “Lupe” Murchison Performing Arts Center, the University of North Texas presents up to three student recitals a day, in addition to faculty and guest performances. Elsewhere on campus, a similar schedule keeps recitals and concerts churning in the Paul Voertman Concert Hall, Stan Kenton Hall, the university recital hall and Merrill Ellis Intermedia Theatre. Even in the summer, UNT keeps performance spaces busy. A keyboard percussion symposium had pianists performing and presenting on campus the week of June 16. The keyboardists shared the campus with the conductors collegiums, a conference for emerging orchestra and symphony leaders. Both events produced public concerts. Texas Woman’s University keeps its faculty and students busy on stage at Margo Jones Performance Hall – lending the spotlight to instrumental and voice students, choirs and ensembles. Indie rock music is alive and well in Denton, too. A thriving indie-folk movement has nurtured the likes of Doug Burr, Seryn, Chambers and Hares on the Mountain. The local hip-hop scene is exploding, and the experimental artists can usually find a spot on a show, either at one of the city’s principal live music venues, or at one of the many house show venues in the city. Venues All of Denton’s venues book a sampling of music, but some of the city’s venues are known for attracting emerging stars and luminaries of a particular sort. Rockin’ Rodeo, 1009 Ave. C., boasts the biggest live music stage in Denton. Located right off of the UNT campus, the club plays top 40 music on several nights a week. On Thursday nights, Rockin’ Rodeo gives the stage to Texas, Red Dirt and Country bands and artists. Dan’s Silverleaf, a popular downtown venue, has a showcase for every taste. The bar and venue, located at 103 Industrial St., brings some of the most respected musicians and bands – Eleven Hundred Springs and Wayne “the Train” Hancock, Bill Fri-

sell, Susan Gibson and even Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger (a duo made up of Sean Lennon and Charlotte Kemp Muhl). Dan’s Silverleaf has also let some serious Denton talent serve up libations from behind the bar when they aren’t on the stage performing: Sarah Jaffe, Robert Gomez and Isaac Hoskins. Andy’s Bar books a healthy slice of its calendar to hip-hop crews – Fab Deuce, D. Smiley, S. Goode, the Brain Gang and Av the Great. Its seen its share of electroni dance music (Subsonic Indulgence, a regular electronic dance music bash held at Andy’s Bar, had its last dance on June 12. Audacity Brew House serves up a frosty beer with a side of music at 1012 Shady Oaks Dr. Music isn’t the pub’s first priority, but the parties who book musicians have brought solid acts to the venue, from Denton’s chill-pop singer-songwriter Kaela Sinclair to local ska-punk outfit the Holophonics. Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios is the best-loved dive bar in Denton – and owner Josh Baish is the first to use “dive” to describe the well-worn bar and snug, battered stage. National and international touring acts seek out the sticky bar that sits

literally on the other side of the railroad tracks, at 411 E. Sycamore St. Modest Mouse, the Mountain Goats and Death Cab for Cutie have played at the club. A bonus: Rubber Gloves devoted some surplus space to become La Meme Gallery, which staged one-night-only art exhibits sporadically. Hailey’s Club boasts the biggest stage and dance floor next to Rockin’ Rodeo. Patrons can sit at the bar or claim one of the few but coveted booths nearby. But most patrons spend an evening at Hailey’s Club on the dance floor near the stage. There are a few pool tables in a far corner, but most of the folks who visit the bar are there for the theme nights. Now under new management, the bar hosts a local hip-hop showcase most Friday nights, officiated by DJ Spinn Mo. Take note: The Friday night hiphop showcases include a dress code, but doesn’t explain what constitutes “proper attire.” The downtown venue is at 122 W. Mulberry St. Harvest House opened during this year’s 35 Denton music festival. The Hickory Street pub is mostly about selling seasonal coffees, craft beer, cocktails and eventually “farm to truck” cuisine. But its also

about staging local bands on its expansive and hip patio on Hickory Street. The stage hosts everything from local indie folk to the occasional Led Zeppelin tribute band. The venue is at 331 E. Hickory St. Music buffs in Denton can also hit up The Labb, at 218 W. Oak St., and the Abbey Underground, at 100 W. Walnut St. The Old Dirty Basement at J&J’s Pizza, 118 W. Oak St. on the downtown Denton Square is famous for its loud and rowdy shows. Sweetwater Grill & Tavern had developed a fierce following for its jazz series on the popular patio in downtown Denton. The series is on tenterhooks now, though, as new owners prepare to re-open the restaurant and bar in August – new owner Ryann (CQ) Reid said on the tavern’s Facebook page. Mabel Peabody’s Beauty Parlor & Chainsaw Repair is known as Denton’s gay bar, with space for a stage and a busy schedule of shows. The venue pours wine, beer and spirits while patrons watch a rock show or take in the latest of Denton’s burlesque scene. The bar is among the stores in the strip center at 1125 E. University Dr. Mulberry Street Cantina takes a page from Beale Street: the local bar has an open-air spot where music -- often by Denton skunkgrass outfit the Boxcar Bandits -spills out on the street. The bar also plays host to indoor community market at 2 p.m. on the second Saturday of the month. The arts & crafts fair includes vendors and plenty of cool drinks. The visual arts do a brisk business in Denton. The lone public gallery is the Appleton-Patterson Center for the Visual Arts, at 400 E. Hickory St. The larger Meadows Gallery is the setting for the Greater Denton Arts Council’s flagship annual exhibit, Materials: Hard & Soft. The show is a national American contemporary craft competition, and is the first exhibit of the year. The smaller Gogh Gallery is booked throughout the year, too. Both universities find a host of spaces for exhibitions throughout the year. Both students and working artists show their work in local coffeehouses, restaurants and businesses. Three Denton companies produce complete theater seasons. The longest-running companies in Denton, Denton Community Theatre and Music Theatre of Denton, stage plays and musicals on the Campus Theatre stage. Denton Community Theatre’s outreach to children and young people – Denton Community Theatre’s Theatre School – produces several productions a year. Sundown Collaborative Theatre, the city’s actor-driven company, produced devised and traditional theater. See ARTS on 33

Arts Festivals Denton knows how to throw a party. The Denton Arts & Jazz Festival marks the beginning of Spring, and the North Texas State Fair & Rodeo is the city’s unofficial start of fall. There’s more to Denton’s festival calendar than these two major, historical events. Thin Line Thin Line, the sole documentary film festival in Texas, brings more than 60 documentary films to Denton each February – and each year, some of the films are related to Denton, made by local filmmakers and include Denton residents. This year, the festival grew into a film and music festival. Keep tabs on the event at www.thinlinefilmfest.com. 35 Denton This festival is the wunderkind of the local festival scene. Though the festival began about 15 years ago as a Denton-specific party and showcase in Austin during South By Southwest Music Festival, it grew in what felt like a single bound in 2010. The four-day walkable music festival is concentrated in downtown Denton venues, with two outdoor stages. It’s a smorgasbord of music – experimental, rock, pop, indie

June 28, 2015 and hip-hop – that has brought international attention to the event and to the culture in Denton that made the city a viable setting for a notable music festival. Newcomers to town might have noticed colorful, music-oriented murals on Hickory and Fry streets. Those murals are part of the partnership between the festival organizers and Denton businesses. Denton Arts & Jazz Festival is held on the last weekend of each April. Hundreds of fine artists set up booths to sell their wares, a community stage and children’s art tent keeps families busy and six stages keep the music going Friday night, and all day on Saturday and Sunday. The headliners play everything from blues to jazz. The festival has drawn record numbers – in part because of the music, in part because of the art – and in part because the festival is free. Denton Cinco de Mayo fills Quakertown Park with lots of culture and the best authentic Mexican food you can get each year (homemade tacos to fresh fruit sprinkled with chili powder) at Quakertown Park. The event starts with a parade and then moves on to the park, and is held the Saturday before May 5 each year. The family event includes music, art, children’s activities and vendor boots. North Texas State Fair & Rodeo starts on August 15 and continues through Aug. 23 at the North Texas State Fair-

Discovering Denton County grounds, 2217 N. Carroll Blvd. The rodeo, livestock show, exhibition and concert series takes place over two weekends. The family event features traditional bull and bronco riding, as well as mutton busting and other contests for the younger set. The music lineup features: Jason Eady, Will Hoge, Mike Ryan, Uncle Lucius, Spivey Crossing, Cody Johnson and JB and the Moonshine Band. Oaktopia Music & Cultural Festival was born two years. Organizers have yet to announce the 2015 lineup, but last year’s was impressive (Aesop Rock with Rob Sonic; XXYYXX; Immortal Technique; Baths; Brave Combo and more.) In other words, Oaktopia is aimed at a college age audience, but is sure to attract serious music fans and festival lovers. The fest is scheduled for Sept. 25-26 in downtown Denton. When compared to the priciest music festival in Denton, 35 Denton, Oaktopia clocks in at an affordable $25 to $30 for early bird patrons. Tickets are on sale at http:// www.oaktopiafest.com/. Industrial Street International Pop Festival is a small, one-day concert that celebrates the music of the ‘60s and ‘70s. Also known as “Geezerpalooza.” The 2015 festival hasn’t been announced just yet, but if organizers bring it back, expect tribute bands and more than one joke about rocking while being “old.” Details are still in the works. Denton’s Day of the Dead is a cele-

33

bration of Halloween and Dia de los Muertos in music, a street fair and – racing coffins. The free festival features a pumpkin patch of carnival games for children, vendor booths, concerts and a circus freakshow. The most popular part of the festival? The coffin races. Competing teams make soapbox cars – some look more like coffins than others – and race for bragging rights down Hickory Street. The event ends with Cirque du Horror, a Halloween musical variety show, after a twilight parade. Holiday Lighting on the Square is the city’s official celebration of Christmas and the winter holidays. For decades, the event has followed a simple formula: gather residents for a sing-along and a treelighting, and then let the music andwassail flow freely. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of December on the downtown Denton Square, 100 E. Hickory St.

Denton produces a lot of talent Many well-known musicians are still creating their art here, kept happy by Denton’s music-savvy audiences. Other renowned musicians spent their formative years in Denton and return to perform on occasion, thanks in part to the long tradition of excellence at the University of North Texas College of Music. All of these artists may not be as well known as Pat Boone, Don Henley, Sara Hickman and Roy Orbison, who called Denton home at one time, but this primer of who’s who and what’s what should boost basic music literacy for natives and newbies alike. Brave Combo. The ageless ensemble mixes up polka with other genres like no other band on earth. Whether nabbing a Grammy or a feature spot on The Simpsons, their intelligent and fun-loving approach to music makes the party when they are there, and thankfully the band is still based in Denton. The band is famous in town for their annual performance on the final day of the Denton Arts & Jazz Fest in which Denton youths gather for a massive “Chicken Dance” and “Polka Mosh”. Bob Dorough. Jazz fans know him as an extraordinary pianist and vocal stylist,

1971 Miss America Phyllis George

and millions more don’t realize they know him as composer of “Conjunction Junction,” “I’m Just a Bill” and the many other ABC Saturday morning cartoon hits of Schoolhouse Rock. This former UNT jazz student started writing the education jingles in the 1970s. One O’Clock Lab Band. It’s hard to know whether this group is the headwaters or flagship of Denton music, so influential is this incubator for jazz artists. Named for the time of day that the band rehearses in Kenton Hall inside the UNT Music Building, the band forever renews itself by asking members to audition for their spot each semester. Wherever good jazz is being made in this country or abroad, there is likely an alumnus of this band. Norah Jones. A graduate of Booker T. Washington Performing Arts High School in Dallas, Jones spent just two years at UNT in the jazz program, but her Texas roots run so deep that her music, like Brave Combo’s, crosses genres. Jones included UNT alumnus Tony Scherr on her highly successful album Feels Like Home and was even named an honorary chairman of the “Save Fry Street” campaign.

Brave Combo Tom Malone. A former member of the Two O’Clock Lab Band, Malone stood in the back row of the band on The Late Show with David Letterman. Sometimes dressed as outrageously as bandleader Paul Schaffer, Malone plays trombone in the band, although he also played saxophone in the Two O’Clock. It was a call from Saturday Night Live that got his television and movie career launched. Malone wrote the chart for Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi’s first Blues Brothers skit on SNL, and Malone stayed with the Blue Brothers. Lyle Mays. The piano behind the guitar in the Pat Metheny Group, Lyle Mays was also the genius behind the band when the One O’ Clock Lab Band received Grammy nominations for its Lab ’75 and Lab ’76 albums. His solo album, called Solo Improvisations for Expanded Piano, (Warner Bros.) capitalizes on his intuitive strengths, but he can also be heard along with Meryl Streep’s narrative on Tale of Peter Rabbit/ Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher (Windham Hill). Polyphonic Spree. Tim Delaughter is the brain behind this choral pop group that got its start at the Fry Street Fair. The group, whose total membership is an evermoving target (including famous Dallas artist St. Vincent), has managed to tour with the likes of David Bowie and The Divine Comedy. They continue to make a splash wherever they are by taking the stage dressed in choir robes and performing psychedelically happy music. Patricia Racette. She came to the University of North Texas aspiring to be a jazz singer, but after a voice faculty member, the late Pattye Johnstone, heard her sing, she coaxed Racette toward classical training. She left as the school’s most promising opera star, landing roles as Violetta and Mimi

with the New York Metropolitan and San Francisco operas. Her performance in the title role of Emmeline, an opera by Tobias Picker, was broadcast on PBS. Others of Note Phyllis George. Crowned Miss America in 1971, this former Denton resident is one of three Miss Texas contestants who went on to win the national title. George went on to work for CBS as a sportsbroadcaster, the first woman to do so, and also has written several books. Shirley Cothran-Barret. This former Denton resident won the Miss America title in 1975. She made Denton her home until recently. She now lectures for Christian women’s groups. Larry McMurtry. He graduated from The University of North Texas with a bachelor of arts in English in 1958. The author of several well-known books, including The Last Picture Show and Lonesome Dove, he has returned to Archer City and runs a large bookstore. Anne Rice. Another best-selling author who attended UNT, Rice was at the school from 1960 to 1962. Now a New Orleans resident, Rice is known as a teller of supernatural tales. “Mean” Joe Greene. Football Hall of Famer Green was the top defensive line pick in the 1969 draft after he finished his studies at UNT. His nickname is somewhat prophetic, as UNT has changed its mascot from the Eagles to the Mean Green. Dr. Phil McGraw. Best known as one of Oprah Winfrey’s gurus, McGraw managed to get his own television show after several appearances on Oprah. But long before he became a guest in millions of homes, he received his master’s degree and his doctorate in psychology at UNT.

Transportation options are plentiful in Denton County By Bj Lewis Staff Writer

Looking to get in and around Denton County, the choice is easy: the well-oiled transportation machine that is the Denton County Transportation Authority. Approved by Denton County voters in 2002, DCTA has come to offer a number of services to the public, including local bus service in Denton, Lewisville and Highland Village, campus shuttles to the University of North Texas and North Central Texas College, van pool and ondemand transportation service in Denton, Lewisville and Highland Village. “We’re always looking to expand our services and continuing to improve options for the citizens of Denton County,” said DCTA president Jim Cline. The highlight of DCTA’s transportation offering is the A-train, a commuter rail service that connects Denton to downtown Dallas. The rail is convenient way for people going to and from Denton to avoid the continued expansion work on Interstate-35E that often leaves the highway clogged with traffic. To make it even easier for passengers to plan trips and purchases bus and rail passes, DCTA staff implemented that the Go Pass Mobile Ticketing app. Users are able to plan trips and purchase day passes or regional passes that give them access to both DART and DCTA services using their smart phones. For additional information on DCTA services, trip planning assistance or disability services, visit https://www.dcta.net or call 940-243-0077 Monday through Friday, 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Many four-legged residents call Denton home By Peggy Heinkel-Wolfe Staff Writer

Denton loves its four-legged friends. The city opened a new, state-of-the-art animal shelter in 2015, and continues to support a dedicated park and long-running festival for dogs, too.

Shelter

The new Linda McNatt Animal Care and Adoption Center makes it easier than ever for people to find a pet that will be a good fit for their family. Located at 3717 N. Elm St., the new center has four get-acquainted rooms in addition to ample facilities – kennels, rooms and yards – where dogs and cats can live and play temporarily. Staff and volunteers care, and help find forever homes, for lost and surrendered pets that sometimes includes chickens and pot-bellied pigs and other less-common animal companions. Denton holds lost pets a little longer than the state requires, a full 96 hours, to give owners time to reclaim them. Thanks to help from the Denton Animal Support Foundation fee, the city can keep adoption fees low. For $60, pets receive on-site veterinary care and can go home the same day with shiny, new tags. Residents looking for volunteer opportunities can work directly with the foundation, Denton animal services or the many rescue group partners who care for feral cats, or help foster dogs and until they can find their forever homes.

For more information, call Denton Animal Services at (940) 349-7594.

Park

Denton’s dog park, Wiggly Field, is lo-

cated in Lake Forest Park at 1760 E. Ryan Rd. Two fenced areas, slightly less than an acre for small or shy dogs and two acres for large dogs, offers plenty of room to be off the leash, run and play. There are no restrooms at Wiggly Field, but the park does have drinking fountains for both humans and pets. Dogs must display current tags — both the rabies vaccination and a city registration tag — to use the park. Denton Animal Services charges $4 to register a spayed or neutered animal and $25 to register an unaltered pet. For more information on registering your animal, or the rules and etiquette for Wiggly Field, visit the city’s website, www.cityofdenton.com.

Festival

For more than 20 years, the city has played host to the Dog Days of Denton festival, an event for canines and their human pets. This year, the event will be held September 26 at the North Texas Fairgrounds in Denton. One lucky canine will be named “Spokesdog” of the year. The event includes demonstrations by dogs and their trainers, contests, food and other entertainment. For more information, visit www.dentondogdays.com . Denton offers shoppers plenty to choose from By Jenna Duncan Staff Writer

From boutiques to big brands, Denton shoppers can find the latest trends and individual styles without leaving the city limits. The retail scene has been growing since Rayzor Ranch Marketplace began opening stores in late 2010. Now, shoppers can find major retailers Kohl’s and Ross Dress For Less alongside Famous Footwear. The final retail spot in the development is currently being developed into a Guitar Center. The adjacent property recently began construction, bringing a Cinemark Movie Bistro and, hopefully, more retail, said Stephanie Whitlow, director of marketing and communications for RED Development, the company overseeing the development. “Rayzor Ranch Marketplace is setting the stage for what will be a brand-new super-regional shopping destination — with the addition of Rayzor Ranch Town Center, the two properties will offer 1.2 million square feet of retail, dining and entertainment to serve this rapidly growing area,” she said in a statement. Current stores at the Town Center development focus more on food and services, like Envy Nail Spa, but RED Development officials said they expect retail to join on soon. Golden Triangle Mall has continued to expand its offerings and longtime tenants such as Dillard’s and J.C. Penney have expanded their spaces and offerings, like J.C.

Penney adding in a Sephora make up department. The mall is also adding a 23,000 square foot H&M store, set to open this fall. This means Denton is retaining the tax base and keeping money in the city instead of shoppers going to Lewisville or Frisco, said Matt Ludemann, the mall manager. “It’s convenient and a fresh new environment,” he said. “There are lots of extra amenities like all new interior seating and some new food options along the way. I think we’re created a pretty good shopping experience and are in the process of creating a very exciting shopping experience.” Throughout town there are also dozens of independent store fronts that exist only in Denton. The area around the downtown square is packed with retailers that specialize in everything from jewelry to shoes to antiques. Just off the square but still in the downtown area are many other retailers, including Sleeping Lizards and the DIME Store. "Downtown Denton has an eclectic mix of boutiques and shops ranging from shabby chic furniture, vintage clothing and antiques to fine furnishings, appliances, art, books, music and clothing,” said Christine Gossett of the Denton Main Street Association. “Locally-owned shops and galleries provide a local touch with their handmade or hand-crafted, recycled, or brand items, and personal customer service.” Other independent retailers, including J.T. Clothiers and Small Fry Children’s Clothing, are also located in the city.

Aubrey embraces its rural roots By Jimmy Isbell For the Denton Record-Chronicle

Aubrey sits 12 miles northeast of Denton, and developed its early reputation based on a rich history of farming. In the early 1800s, it found prosperity with its main cash crop, the peanut. Peanut farms surrounded the town. Today, Aubrey residents celebrate each year with the Aubrey Peanut Festival, which includes a parade and multiple family-fun activities. By 2009, Aubrey had acquired the nickname “Horse Country USA” because of the many ranches that have sprung up to serve the equestrian community. Horse training arenas and breeding operations are plentiful in and around Aubrey. In 1920, Aubrey was a tiny rural community of 700 people. Today, it supports an estimated population of 2,800 and is surrounded by residential communities such as Savannah, Paloma Creek and Providence Village. Many of these newer neighborhoods are home to commuters who work throughout the D/FW region. The nearby U.S. Highway 380 and Dallas North Tollway give residents easy access to shopping centers in Denton, Frisco and Lewisville. Aubrey’s children attend school at Au-

Convenience to I-35 leads to growth in Corinth By Jimmy Isbell

For the Denton Record-Chronicle

Corinth lies between Denton and Lake Dallas, just off I-35E and perfectly positioned for the city slicker looking for a change to a small-town country home. Located near the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, Corinth offers a wide variety of things to do and places to see. Founded in 1880, most children in Corinth attend Denton ISD or Lake Dallas ISD schools. The community is home to a North Central Texas College campus, which serves Cooke County, Denton County and Montague County. There are many features that draw outsiders to Corinth. Oakmont Country Club, which boasts 170 acres of rolling hills and a par 72 golf course, is a big asset. A 182-acre community park borders Lewsiville Lake a few minutes outside town. Over the years, the city has grown considerably with a multitude of new housing projects, apartments and commercial living. The Atrium Medical Center of Corinth opened seven years ago as an acute-care hospital that focuses on the needs of older patients. Corinth is often listed among the Top 25 places to live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Cross Roads is located at the convenient intersection of U.S. Highway 377 and U.S. Highway 380, four miles east of Denton and near Ray Roberts Lake and Lewisville Lake. It may be small, but its location virtually assures that heavy growth is on the way. Just under a total of seven square miles, the population sat at 865 as of 2013. The small town has the luxury of not paying property taxes, although county tax and school district taxes do apply to its residents. The town has a city government and police department. D Magazine recently named Flower Mound, a town of 50,702 residents, as Number 8 on its list of best suburbs. CNN Money Magazine has it at No. 2 in its list of Best Places to Find a New Job. And, marking 20 consecutive years, the Arbor Day Foundation named it Tree City USA. Needless to say, Flower Mound offers a variety of activities for visitors and residents. It might be a fishing trip to Lake Lewisville or a day of boating. Or you might go shopping at one of the city’s many specialty stores. How about a meal at one of Flower Mound’s recently opened restaurants -- Mellow Mushroom, Pie Five, Penn Station East Company Subs or The Table. Just take a drive down main road FM 1173 to see Krum’s rolling pastures, prairie skies and spacious country living. At one point, Krum reportedly held the record for being the world’s greatest inland wheat market. According to the Krum Heritage Museum website, more than a million bushels of wheat were hauled in by wagon and shipped by the Sante Fe Railroad in 1900. Lake Dallas known for its community spirit By Jimmy Isbell For the Denton Record-Chronicle

Just 10 miles south of Denton on the shores of Lewisville Lake, Lake Dallas is the oldest of the four Lake Cities communities. Lake Dallas reported a population of 7,337 as of 2013. The growth is fueled by new small businesses, lakeside housing developments and commuters looking for a more relaxed lifestyle. Back in the 1920s, the Garza Bridge linked Lake Dallas and Little Elm together, but was torn down and replaced by a new bridge in 2009 to connect Swisher Road in Lake Dallas to Little Elm’s Garza Lane. Since the bridge linked to the two cities, it has given Lake Dallas’ downtown area new development opportunities and additional jobs. The city is home to a Boys and Girls Club of North Central Texas. Lake Dallas also is know for annual events such as a Mardi Gras parade and a July 4 celebration. It partners with local businesses for events in the summer and the holiday season. Families love taking their kids to the city’s five parks: Willow Grove Park, Community Park, City Park, River Oaks Park and Thousands Oak Park. The community is served by the Lake

Pilot Point mixes old with new

By Jimmy Isbell For the Denton Record-Chronicle

Pilot Point may be the oldest town in

Denton County, but its new shopping centers, well-equipped library, top-flight medical facility and newly developed neighbor-

hoods have made the city a reinvororated hub of northeast Denton County. The town has such a rich history that the Texas Historical Commission recognizes it as a historical site in Texas. The Commission administers the National Register of Historic Places. A stroll through the town square reveals multiple memorial markers that commemorate those who sacrificed their lives in military service during the 20th century. The city got its name based on its geographic position at the highest elevation in the area. The town’s population surpassed 1,100 in the 1930s and now sits at about 4,000 and counting. Like Aubrey, Pilot Point and the surrounding area benefit from a burgeoning ranching industry based on horse breeding and equestrianism. Pilot Point is served by the Pilot Point Independent School District, which is made up of Pilot Point High School, Pilot Point Elementary, Pilot Point Intermediate and Pilot Point Middle School. Each school is known for its solid academics. In 2013, the Bearcats softball team added another souvenir in their expanding trophy case, winning the Class 2A state title. The football team, which last won a state

Ponder’s colorful past leads to promising future By Jimmy Isbell

For the Denton Record-Chronicle

Ponder is one of many popular rural areas in Denton County with a colorful past. Community leaders hope to attract more residents to create a promising future. Fun Fact About Ponder: Legendary bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde attempted to rob Ponder State Bank, but they found it empty because it had gone out of business several days earlier. Next door to the old bank building, the Ranchman Cafe remains a North Texas institution with great steaks and terrific pies and cobblers. The town was originally named Gerald. But city leaders changed the name to Ponder aftter realizing another Texas city already had been named Gerald. Ponder covers about 3.2 square miles and boasted a population of 1,458 as of 2013. On the city website, there are 20 business, not including the various churches and the five schools. The community is served by the Ponder Independent School District, Lil Einstein’s Academy and Little Lions Learning Center. Ponder ISD is home to Ponder High and Ponder Elementary. Ponder’s mascot is the Lion. The high school’s boys basketball team has won five Class 2A state titles since 2001, including a three-peat from 2008-2010.

Shady Shores offers quiet lifestyle By Jimmy Isbell For the Denton Record-Chronicle

Shady Shores covers 2.9 square miles -smallest of the four Lake Cities communities. The town does not have a stoplight, but boasts a large population for such a small area at 2,758 (2013). Homes began spring up in the area in the early 1930s and the area came to be known as Shady Shores. But the city wasn’t officially established until 1960. In 2000, general fees, business and franchise fees, as well as donations from the residents funded road repairs and police and fire departments. Shady Shores feeds into the Denton and Lake Dallas Independent School Districts. It is home to Stephens Elementary, Shady Shores Elementary and Bettye Myers Middle School.
