Classic of Denton All-Area Boys Basketball Team FIRST TEAM
MOST VALUABLE PLAYERS
Ty McGhie Guyer, G, Jr. McGhie was one of the state’s top shooters and served as a valuable perimeter weapon for Guyer. He averaged 11.4 points and shot 41.2 percent from 3-point range to earn first team all-district honors.
Jackson Maupin Argyle, G, Jr. Maupin became Argyle’s most consistent shooter this season and was instrumental in the Eagles’ deep run. The junior averaged 13 points per game and will take on an expanded role next year.
MJ Leslie Braswell, G, Jr. Leslie was Braswell’s premier scorer and averaged a team-high 15.1 points per game. The junior was efficient from the perimeter with 103 3-pointers, and he was a first-team selection in District 8-5A.
Hayden Smith Aubrey, G, Sr. Averaging 17.5 points and five rebounds per game, Smith was a constant force for the Chaparrals’ offense with his ability to both attack the rim and shoot from 3-point range. He was the 11-4A Offensive MVP.
Jalen Wilson and De’Vion Harmon
Mason Sheppard Pilot Point, G, Sr. Sheppard, the sharpshooter for Pilot Point, used his 3-point shooting to make a crucial impact during the Bearcats’ Cinderella run. Sheppard averaged 10.9 points per game and was a first-team all-district pick.
Guyer De’Vion Harmon and Jalen Wilson have dominated the Class 6A level since first donning the Guyer uniform back in 2015. The duo finished their careers with a 125-16 record and two appearances in the 6A Region I final, leading the program out of the second round for the first time. Harmon, an Oklahoma signee, averaged 20.3 points, five assists and 4.4 rebounds as a senior and Wilson, a Michigan signee, averaged 18.1 points, 7.5 rebounds and three assists. Wilson and Harmon will now shift their focus to Division I basketball but will undoubtedly go down as two of the best high school players to come through Denton ISD.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Austin Carter Aubrey, G, Sr. Carter was tough to stop once he got going for Aubrey with his dynamic scoring prowess. Carter averaged 15.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game and was named the District 11-4A Newcomer of the Year.
SECOND TEAM Oscar Martinez Ponder, G, Jr. Ponder graduated just about its entire roster after the 2017-2018 season and Martinez emerged as the Lions new go-to guy. He averaged 13.1 points and 2.7 rebounds and was a first-team all-district selection.
Tashawn Banks Ryan, G, Sr. Banks was one of the few constants for a Raiders’ roster that seemed to always be in flux because of youth and inexperience. The senior averaged 14.4 points, four assists, 2.7 rebounds and 2.4 steals.
JaKobe Coles Guyer, F, Jr. Coles stepped up in a big way as a junior for Guyer, controlling the paint and emerging as one of the top prospects in the Class of 2020. Coles averaged 15.1 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game for the Wildcats, who advanced to the Class 6A Region I final for the second consecutive year and finished the season with a 32-5 record. Coles exceeded the 1,000-point mark in his career (1,119) and was the Co-Offensive Player of the Year in District 5-6A. With Jalen Wilson (Michigan) and De’Vion Harmon (Oklahoma) off to college, Coles will be the go-to guy for Guyer next year.
Brandon White Argyle, G, Sr.
Pilot Point, G, Jr.
While Brandon White’s offensive production dipped slightly during his senior year, he remained a dominant defender with length on the perimeter that was hard for opponents to match at the Class 4A level. White, who also played football this year as a wide receiver, averaged 8.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.5 assists for the Eagles, who advanced to the third round of the playoffs before falling to Graham in heartbreaking fashion. White was a first-team all-district selection in District 8-4A and earned TABC All-Region honors for the second consecutive season.
A physical guard for the Bearcats, Pitts made a difference on both ends of the floor. He averaged 10.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists for the season to take home first-team all-district honors in 9-3A.
Lezeric Bailey Braswell, F, So. Bailey served as a reliable inside scorer and rim protector for Braswell. The sophomore forward shot 55 percent from the field while averaging 8.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.3 blocks per game.
Hunter Lavelle Argyle, G, Jr.
Krum, G, Sr.
Liberty Christian, G, Sr. Grigg helped a struggling Liberty Christian program do a complete 180 this season thanks to his consistent and reliable presence on the court. Grigg averaged 13.3 points, 2.7 rebounds and two assists per game.

Smith, the Newcomer of the Year in District 8-5A, showcased his ability while leading Braswell to its first playoff appearance and an overall record of 27-8. Second on the team with 11.1 points per game, Smith used a high basketball IQ to find different ways to score and create his own shot. Smith grabbed 4.3 rebounds per game and dished out a team-high 3.3 assists. With the Bengals losing just one starter to graduation, Smith will look to lead Braswell to the program’s first playoff victory next season.

CO-IMPACT PLAYER OF THE YEAR Carter Marquis

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Jacob Pitts
Lavelle helped solidify the Argyle backcourt on a team that advanced to the third round of the playoffs. Lavelle averaged 7.4 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists and was a first-team all-district selection.
NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR
It’s difficult to argue Carter Marquis’ impact on the hardwood this season. Not only did the senior guard help guide the Bobcats to the second round of the Class 4A playoffs, but he also turned in one of the better stat lines in the entire Denton area. Marquis averaged 18.2 points and hauled in 6.3 rebounds, 2.5 steals, and 2.1 assists per game while coming up with big play after big play at the most crucial times. Marquis was a first-team all-district pick in District 8-4A, and his presence as the go-to scorer will be sorely missed next season in veteran head coach Doug Boxell’s offensive attack.
Argyle, G, Sr. There’s plenty of reasons why Argyle was as dominant as it was while advancing to the third round of the playoffs. A loaded roster is tops on that list, and the guy who led the charge game after game was senior Max Valentino. Valentino, who played a small role for the Eagles in their run to the state tournament three seasons ago, stepped up the last two seasons and capped his career averaging 13.3 points and 7.2 rebounds. Valentino was the District 8-4A Offensive MVP in his final season at Argyle.

Pilot Point was a long shot to even make the playoffs before Price led the Bearcats to seven straight victories. Pilot Point, the No. 4 seed out of District 9-3A, advanced to the regional semifinals for the first time since 2001 and was the area’s Cinderella story this season.

Classic of Denton All-Area Girls Basketball Team MOST VALUABLE PLAYER
FIRST TEAM Chloe Malone Sanger, G, So. Malone was a star on both ends of the court to help lead the Lady Indians to the playoffs for the second straight year. She averaged 12 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 3.4 steals and was the 11-4A MVP.
Dorian Norris Lake Dallas, F, Jr. Norris led the Lady Falcons with 12.2 points and 9.3 rebounds per game while also starring on the defensive end, where she averaged 2.7 steals and 1.7 blocks. Norris was a first-team all-district pick in 8-5A.
Jade Thompson Guyer, G, Jr. Thompson was again an explosive weapon on both ends of the court, averaging 15.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.3 assists per game. She was a first-team all-district pick in District 5-6A.
Aminah Hall Braswell, F, Jr. Hall demonstrated a presence in the paint and showed her ability to shoot from outside. That versatility led to a team-high 12.1 points per game and helped Hall draw more than two charges per game.
Rhyle McKinney
Callie Boyles
Argyle, G, Jr. McKinney first captured the attention of those across the state when she knocked down a jump shot at the buzzer to defeat Dallas Lincoln in the third round of the playoffs last year. But her stardom only grew this season, as the Argyle junior became one of the state’s most lethal scorers at any level. McKinney stepped up to fill the void left by the graduation of Gabby Standifer and an injury to Sydney Standifer by averaging 23.9 points, 2.2 assists and 2.9 steals per game. McKinney was the District 8-4A MVP and the 4A state tournament MVP, solidifying herself as the latest in a long line of stars for the Lady Eagles.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Kaia Saylor
Denton, G, Sr.
Aubrey, F, Jr.
The averages of 20 points, 10 rebounds and five steals per game only begin to show the importance of Scott on this year’s Denton team. The senior scored in a variety of ways to haul the Lady Broncos into a tie for second place in District 8-5A, and in her lone playoff game, Scott put up 26 points including four 3-pointers. Whether it was from deep, a transition bucket at the rim, an offensive rebound, or an isolation score, Scott was seemingly always able to make a play for her offense and lead the way with her savvy play. Scott, the District 8-5A Offensive MVP, will be playing at South Plains College next season.
Aubrey pieced together one of the more dominant playoff runs the program has had in recent memory, and a big piece to that success was Kaia Saylor. The junior was a consistent presence inside the paint on both ends of the floor while averaging 14 points and 10 rebounds per game. But she really made her mark on defense while averaging an eye-popping seven blocks. Saylor led Aubrey to a district title and the Lady Chaparrals cruised to two solid wins in the playoffs before losing to Lincoln.
Bella Hughes is one of those players whose versatility appears to have no limits. The senior guard averaged 12.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and just shy of 2 assists per game for the Lady Warriors.
SECOND TEAM Miranda Nowak Aubrey, G, Sr. Nowak was another Lady Chaparral who cobbled together an impressive final season. Nowak, a guard, averaged 10 points per game to go with five assists and five rebounds per game.
Mackenzie Buss
C0-DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR Brooklyn Carl
Kaia Williams Ponder, G, Sr.
NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR
Williams made everything go for Ponder in her final year with the program, whether it was pushing the tempo or getting the offense into its sets. When she wasn’t setting others up to score, Williams had little issue taking matters into her own hands and averaged 16 points, five rebounds and five assists as a senior. On defense, she was the head of the Lady Lions’ full court press and had five steals per game. Williams was the District 9-3A MVP.
Argyle
Buss was instrumental in Lake Dallas’ successful run in District 8-5A as the freshman averaged 9.7 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists in her first season with the team. She was the 8-5A Newcomer of the Year.
Argyle, G, Jr. Carl is the only player to have started on each of the last three state championship teams for Argyle, and the junior was a vital part of the Lady Eagles’ run to a fifth straight state title this season. Carl was Argyle’s best defender and consistently locked up the best player on opposing teams. She also served as the distributor for the Lady Eagles’ offense, using crisp, well-timed passes to set her teammates up to score. Carl averaged 5.3 points, 9.0 assists, 3.0 steals and 3.0 rebounds, and was the District 8-4A Co-Defensive Player of the Year. Carl also earned TABC All-State and All-Region honors.
After leading Argyle to its fifth straight state championship, Westmoreland now has four state titles in eight years as a head coach. This year’s run was likely the most impressive yet as Argyle overcame the loss of star Sydney Standifer and beat the state’s top four teams to close the season.
Bella Hughes Liberty Christian, G, Sr.
Lake Dallas, G, Fr.
IMPACT PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Chance Westmoreland
Boyles was a vocal leader and played a key role in Guyer’s run to a district title. The Tarleton State signee averaged 11.3 points and 8.7 rebounds in her final season and was a first-team all-district selection.

COACH OF THE YEAR
Guyer, F, Sr.
Kelley Akins Ponder, G, Jr. Akins helped Ponder win a share of the District 9-3A title as a junior, averaging 11 points, four rebounds and four steals. She was a first-team all-district selection and earned TABC All-Region honors.
Abby Williams Argyle, G, Jr. Williams was the Lady Eagles’ leading rebounder and consistently impacted the game by crashing the boards. She averaged 3.2 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.6 steals, earning first-team all-district honors.
Kamryn Gibson Braswell, G, Jr. Gibson’s motor seemingly never stopped as the junior made countless big plays for Braswell while averaging 9.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.2 steals per game. She was the 8-5A Defensive Player of the Year.
Bella Earle
Alisa Williams Guyer, F, Fr. The expectations inside the program were high for this year’s Guyer team thanks to the return of several key players and the addition of Williams, who shined as a freshman. The Lady Wildcats were not projected to make the playoffs but went on to win the District 5-6A title, with Williams playing a key role in that run. The freshman averaged 8.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game and had a knack for hitting big shots in clutch moments. Williams was the District 5-6A Newcomer of the Year.
Guyer, G, So. Earle averaged 9.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists as a sophomore on a Guyer team that went 23-12. Earle was a first team all-district pick and will be a key part of the Lady Wildcats’ plans next season.
