Center for Women at all stages hether a woman is going through adolescence, planning to have a baby or experiencing the challenges of the mid-life years and beyond, she will find the services and support she needs at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton.

Doctors can use the visit to provide a teen with early and accurate information about sex, including how to use condoms and other forms of contraception. If a teen is already sexually active, she can be screened for certain STDs.

Physicians on the medical staff of Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton provide care in such specialties as obstetrics, gynecology, internal medicine, cardiology, gastroenterology, urology and reconstructive surgery.

CHILDBEARING YEARS

W

Following are some tips of what women should look for at different stages in life. TEENAGE YEARS Developing an open dialogue with a trusted physician should begin in the teenage years, according to Gayle Walsh, M.D., PhD, an OB/GYN on the medical staff of Texas Health Denton. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), teenage girls should see a gynecologist when they are 13-15 years old. “Teenagers develop rapidly and may have a lot of questions about their changing bodies they may not want to ask their parents,” Walsh said. “A trusted physician specializing in women’s health can have an open discussion about sexuality, menstruation and healthy eating habits.”

During the 20s and 30s, women can be concerned with fertility issues. “Some women are looking to prevent pregnancy and others are looking to get pregnant,” said Walsh. “It is also a time to take a look at a woman’s genetic history and begin monthly breast self-examinations.” An annual physical should include a Pap smear, a breast exam and a discussion about the woman’s reproductive goals. “Even if a woman is not planning on becoming pregnant immediately, there are still some actions she can take to help her prepare for a pregnancy in the future,” Walsh said. Women should also be familiar with their local hospital and the types of services they provide. For example, Texas Health Denton has the area’s only Level III NICU, a vital services for women who are or plan to get pregnant. The hospital offers a full range of classes, newslet-

ters and all the information and support needed to make the experience as rewarding as possible, including a full-time lactation specialist. For unexpected issues, Texas Health Denton’s Women’s Imaging features digital mammography, ultrasound, stereotactic and bone densitometry suites. The hospital also has a Women’s Resource Library to offer information on just about any issue relating to women’s health. AFTER CHILDBEARING YEARS As women reach their 40s and beyond, they begin to face new issues, such as bone loss, incontinence, and increased risks in certain types of cancers. “Regular mammograms begin in your 40s,” Walsh said. “It is also a time to address issues around problems such as pain during sexual intercourse, menopause or bone loss. “Some tests may be needed to determine the best course of action to help women overcome these problems and live their life to the fullest.” Regardless of which stage of life a woman finds herself, The Center for Women at Texas Health Presbyterian has comprehensive services necessary to cover every stage of life. For more information on physicians on the medical staff or the services offered through The Center for Women, call 1-877-THR-WELL.

04 Bringing community back to banking

ringing community back to banking is more than a slogan at First Access Capital Bank. The bank was founded by people in the Denton community. Members of its management team are veteran Denton bankers, and the majority of the board are long-time community members. Even 86 percent of the stockholders live north of Lake Lewisville. “The ownership and management are people who have been here for a long time and are going to be here for a long time,” noted President and CEO Randy Robinson. “Our board members all have a long-time record of community involvement, either from business or volunteer and charitable work.” Robinson, who had been a Denton banker for more than 30 years, saw more and more local banks being taken over by large, national institutions. “I had had several people over the years asking me to do something like this. I saw the options for working in locally owned banks was narrowing, and I felt that was creating a void in the market. “I just felt that taking ownership and management out of the local community was not good.” In 2006, Robinson felt the time was right to make a move. “I reached a point where I thought, ‘I’ve been in banking long enough to have the experience, and to have the desire to start from scratch.” He began talking to people, looking for support, and got a lot of encouragement. One of his staunchest supporters, and an organizer of the bank, was Phil Gallivan. A retired banker, Gallivan serves on the bank’s board and is a strong proponent of the community banking idea. “Starting with our president, Randy (Robinson) is a product of Denton and a product of the University of North Texas. In fact, many of the bankers have been in the local banking community all their careers,” he said. He noted that Robinson had built up a group of local bankers who wanted to work with him. These bankers, with their experience and connections throughout the community, have been an important part of Access 1st Capital’s success. The bank jumped into community activities from the beginning. The doors were barely open when it sponsored the first Wild Beast Feast on the grounds where the bank building now stands. The event featured wild game dishes from duck to alligator and benefited the Greater Denton Arts Council. It also was an underwriter of the Denton Chamber of Commerce’s 100th Anniversary video, sponsor of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and You’re Beautiful Luncheon, the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival, the Denton Chamber’s Mega Mixer and the University of North Texas Athletics. President Randy Robinson serves on the Denton Public Utility Board and the City of Denton Charter Revison Committee, while George Highfill is chairman of the board of governors of the Denton Community Theatre and Jason Adamson is a member of the Fred Moore Day School Nursery board. The community involvement is more than just getting into and supporting the community, it’s the way the bank does business. Robinson said he feels that many of the large, national banks look at their business as a commodity. “It’s not relationship based,” he explained. “When the people who make decisions for the bank live here and work here, it’s always done from a community perspective. That’s how we run our bank.”

Weimer’s practice is for adult individuals desiring the foundational truths of a Biblical-based, professional counseling. “My faith in Jesus Christ is the dynamic of everything I do as a therapist,” said Weimer, who was born and raised in Texas and has resided in Denton and Tarrant County since 1990. She has worked in the mental health field since 1993 and opened private and group counseling offices in February 2009. In addition to Weimer’s professional private practice counseling, she serves as the Executive Director of Unto Others, Inc., a non-profit, faith-based organization serving members of our community touched by traumatic life circumstances and those in need of restoration and inner healing of mind, soul and spirit. Unto Other’s website address is www.unto-others.com. “I was born with compassion for others. Young children are often asked what they want to be when they grow up. I knew,” Weimer said. “It is challenging to

describe your profession when you are called to it. It’s as close as your heartbeat and as natural as breathing.” After serving six years in the United States Army and obtaining my Bachelors Degree in Psychology, Weimer graduated in 2002 with a Masters Degree in Weimer Marriage and Family Counseling from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Additionally, Weimer earned a Masters Degree in Christian Education. In the future Weimer hopes to be part of a community wide movement to help women in need. “I envision, with Denton’s finest community support and private contributions, the construction or acquisition of a unique Christian residential campus for women coming out of abuse and tragic circumstances,” Weimer said. “This will help (women) discover the purpose for life beyond abuse, bringing healing and longterm health to both (women) and her community.” For more information, please contact Susan Weimer, MAMFC, LPC at (940) 239-7740. Pinpoint information fast and easy at DentonMarketplace.com, the area’s best online directory of local businesses.

Especially for Seniors offers a five-day meal program delivered once a week to seniors in the Denton area. Business owner Karen Goodson Portillo’s mission is to provide nutritious meals and reliable services for the senior community, she said, by removing the burden of having to shop and prepare healthy meals. Portillo, who has lived in Denton County since 1979, graduated from the University of North Texas in December 1989 with a bachelor’s degree in hotel and restaurant management. She’s a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Denton. While attending college, a guest speaker sparked her interest in catering. While at home with a new born, Portillo picked up side jobs to make extra money and one of those was working for a caterer. In September 1990, Portillo started Especially for You Catering Services serving the surrounding community. Now, after nearly a 20-year career as a caterer, she is expanding her businesses to

include a special focus on meals to seniors. “Since I was a child I have always loved older people. So I created ‘Especially for Seniors,’ which will bring together my love for cooking and my love for seniors,” Portillo said. Portillo earned recognition by being named Southwest Grand Champion at 1996 Texas Restaurant Association in Houston. The following year, Portillo was awarded another accolade. “One of my greatest moments was being recognized as the outstanding alumna in 1997 from University of North Texas division of Hotel/Restaurant, she said. In addition, she judges for the Texas State Fair cookie competition. Portillo hopes to develop a thriving business and hopes clients appreciate this service and will spread by word of mouth but also plans to launch www.mealsespeciallyforseniors.com soon. 08 Service swift at Sticker Station Accent On Business

Sticker Station/Xtra Lube strives to make auto maintenance convenient for its customers. Alvin Whaley and his son, John, opened the Sticker Station in 1986. That’s 23 years of experience and customer service. You can’t beat longevity as a mark of customer satisfaction. Sticker Station started as an auto inspection center, and lube services were added later. “Oil changes are necessary for proper maintenance, and auto inspections are required,” Alvin Whaley said. “But it can be difficult for people to work them into their busy schedules.” At Sticker Station, the staff tries to take some of the hurt out of the process with prompt and quality service, he said. “Customers should feel that they have been treated well and that their service was a good value,” Whaley said. “That aspect of our business is just as important as the services physically performed on their car.” The Whaley family has been a vital part of the community for more than 30 years. Alvin was principal at Denton High School in the 1970s, and he and John were homebuilders in the 1980s before opening Sticker Station.

“Customers should feel that they have been treated well and that their service has good value. — Alvin Whaley, owner Sticker Station/Xtra Lube strives to get the customer out in a timely manner. “The emission inspections are much more time consuming than the old safety inspections,” Alvin Whaley said. Although Sticker Station still places a premium on customers’ time, the wait can be considerably longer. Customers with time constraints are welcome to drop their cars off with staff, he said. “Auto maintenance is not an activity a lot of people look forward to; we work hard to make the service a good experience,” he said. “Regular oil changes and other maintenance help keep auto emissions lower and help to ward off expensive repairs.” When it’s time to change your car’s oil or get it inspected, bring it to the Sticker Station/Xtra Lube at 813 S. Locust St., at the corner of Eagle and Locust streets, or call 940-382-2116.

care possible on a very personal and individual basis. “We want our patrons to feel that these services have been provided by a learned friend,” said Kelly. What is compounding? Compounding combines an ageless art with the latest medical knowledge and state-of-the-art technology, allowing specially

trained professionals to prepare customized medications to meet each patient’s specific needs. Preparation of these specialized medications requires chemicals and equipment that are not available in most pharmacies. “We have filled prescriptions for every family member. “From cats and dogs, to pediatrics, to women’s hormone treat-

ments, to hospice care, even a zebra and a snake or two for a zoo. “We work together with prescribers to solve medication problems by compounding specialized medications which meet the unique needs of each patient or animal,” said Kelly Selby. Kelly grew up in Union City, Okla., and graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 1981. Nancy Selby grew up in Edmond, Okla., and received her bachelor of science in pharmacy degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 1982. Their two children are 17-yearold Emily and 13-year-old Erin. The family belongs to the First United Methodist Church in Denton. Kelly and Nancy Selby are members of the Denton Chamber of Commerce, the Texas Pharmacist Association and the

National Community Pharmacist Association. Kelly is also the only Denton County pharmacist who is a full fellow with the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists. Kelly was awarded the Innovative Pharmacist of the Year by the Texas Pharmacist Association in 1993 for his work in compounding. “There is nothing more satisfying than helping a patient find the solution to their problem. “We really enjoy working with the people,” Kelly said. “In the last quarter of a century we have seen many and improved changes in pharmaceutical care, and we intend to stay on the cutting edge of your care. Our employees will assist you as you seek quality pharmaceutical care.” The pharmacy is currently located at 2500 Lillian Miller Parkway.

Foundations strong at Selwyn School 13 “As a teacher, being at Selwyn means that I get to teach beyond the normal day to day curriculum. “I have the freedom to include additions, extensions and deeper research into all aspects of the curriculum,” said Connie Miller, former public school teacher and current Selwyn teacher, Lower School Division Head and parent. “As a Selwyn parent, it means that my child is continually challenged.” Miller continued, “Since I don’t have to devote class time to TAKS preparation, my students have no trouble getting through their lessons and having time for more challenging things.” Selwyn College Preparatory School has recently refocused commitment to its mission of preparing students for acceptance and success at universities across the nation. This goal is met through a challenging curriculum, low student-teacher ratios and a full enrichment program comprised of foreign language, music, art, drama and physical education. Additional benefits of a Selwyn education include the Perspectives program. Beginning in First Grade, students take part in educational adventures including day trips to local museums, and progressing to trips to Y.O. Ranch in Lower School, Colorado or Corpus Christi in Middle School, and varying locales in Upper School. This past spring, half of Selwyn’s Upper School students traveled to Washington, DC, while the other half ventured to Montreal, Canada. The Perspectives program provides the opportunity to enhance the core curriculum, encourages team-building and gives students a gradual sense of independence. As a Selwyn parent noted, “Perspectives helps the students see things not just from a family perspective, but from an educational one. It feels like a vacation, but they’re learning. “They don’t mind it being educational because it’s fun.” Each February, Selwyn students celebrate International Week through indepth study of countries around the globe, guest speakers and performers. The event is capped off with a schoolwide evening of dinner and student presentations and performances. Through International Week, Selwyn students understand their place in the global community. While Selwyn’s classes are small by design, there are some openings.

Personal attention and years of experience allow Bonduris “to target teaching in the most effective and efficient manner toward students’ individual needs.” In addition to teaching, Bonduris also performs at

private parties, outdoor concerts and restaurants. Bonduris began teaching music classes out of a local music store while attending NTSU in 1975. “By the time the store closed in 1982, I had built up enough business to open a private studio,” he said. He moved around Denton’s downtown square for about a decade prior to settling in his present location for the last 15 years. He recently opened a second satellite location to hold band rehearsals for students. “This way I can apply my other 25-year vocation of being a bandleader and professional performer to my teaching.” In an effort to teach people to teach themselves, Bonduris has authored four different music instruction books and occasionally teaches workshops in Chicago and Austin. He grew up in San

Antonio and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1969 and Trinity University in 1974. Bonduris attended NTSU from 1974 to 1979, and went back in 2003 and recently finished his master’s degree in music education at the University of North Texas. Bonduris received a plaque of appreciation for his 20 years of service teaching UNT minicourses, a program that ended a couple of years ago. Bonduris is involved in many local organizations including Denton Music Teachers Association, Music Educators National Conference, Texas Music Teachers Association, Texas Blues Society and Texas Fingerstyle Guitar Association. Business hours are by appointment. For more information, please call 940-320-6023 or visit www.bondurismusic.com.

Celebrating 33 years of service to the area In 1922 the Rev. August Hoeger was serving as a pastor in Arthur, N.D. A fellow pastor put a challenge in the church newsletter for readers to donate two pennies to finance treatment for a young boy with polio. Money flowed in, and a surplus of $2,000 remained. The Rev. Hoeger suggested that this money be used to help other individuals with disabilities, and to that end, the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society was formed. The society is first and foremost a Christian organization. Although it began as a facility for persons with physical and mental disabilities, the society soon expanded its services to include older adults. While the society has grown during the past 87 years, its mission has remained the same: to share God’s love in word and deed by providing shelter and supportive services to older persons and others in need, believing that “In Christ’s love, everyone is someone. The society owns 240 facilities in 24

states. Good Samaritan Society was asked to come to Denton by a group of foresighted individuals who recognized the need for retirement housing in this community. In 1973, a community fund drive, chaired by Tom Harpool, raised the funds to purchase the land at 2500 Hinkle Drive. It was the hard work of well-known community members such as the Rev. Fred Cassell, Frank Hall, Tom Harpool and Tom Noel, who were part of the original planning committee, which resulted in the establishment of Good Samaritan Society-Denton Village. The facility opened in September 1976.

This month, the Denton Village celebrates 33 years of service to seniors in our community.

New twin home Good Samaritan has offered the unique retirement housing option of twin home living since 1980. We now have a total of 60 units. Large units from 1,200 to 2,000-plus square feet are offered. Residents give up lawn care and home maintenance but keep a sense of being in their own home, according to Virginia McDaniel, director of Resident Services. “They also give up property taxes and homeowners’ insurance, Virginia emphasizes. One resident says that she and her husband chose living in a twin home because they could downsize from their large home, yet still keep all of their important furnishings.

She also appreciates the fact that a security attendant is always on duty and will quickly respond in case of an emergency. There are many activities to enjoy at Good Samaritan. Exercise classes, interesting and informative lectures, outings in Denton and throughout the metroplex are just some of the offerings. Restaurant-style dining is also available each day for all three meals. Since the units have large, well-equipped kitchens, some residents cook most of their own meals. To schedule a personal tour, contact Virginia McDaniel at 940-383-6347.

18 Flooring America has best of both worlds Accent On Business

09 29 09

Kelby Frederick’s earliest memories are of working with his father at wholesale trade shows, setting up displays and flooring samples. After 21 years in the wholesale carpet business, his father opened a retail store on March 11, 1987. Against the long odds of surviving as a start-up business during a recession and real estate bust, the company thrived because of the hard work and dedication of his parents, Roger and Margy Frederick. They decided they wanted to control their own destiny and chose to enter the retail segment of the flooring industry. “Watching my parents start a business from scratch and quickly become the leading flooring company in North Texas was a terrific experience,” Frederick said. “I saw the tremendous opportunity to take over the family business and build upon the solid foundation they created. It is an enormous responsibility to own and operate your own business, but it is also very rewarding.” After Kelby Frederick entered the family business, they joined a buying group, CarpetMAX. This gave them all the advantages of a national company, yet they maintained the uniqueness of a locally owned company. CarpetMAX changed names in 2000 to Flooring America and merged with the world’s largest retail flooring company, CCA Global Partners. As a new member of Flooring America, the Fredericks are now represented by a management team that oversees more than $6 billion worth of flooring business around the globe. The relationship put Flooring America of Denton in the position of being the largest buyer and seller of floor covering in the world — and yet remain locally owned and operated. This combination gives them a very unique market position that has enabled them to provide the best value to their customers in the entire industry. “We give our clients the best of both worlds — national buying power and family owned and operated service!” he said. Flooring America of Denton was selected by corporate as one of two pilot stores in the country for a new showroom concept. A world-renowned architect firm was hired to design a state-of-the-art showroom environment. The interior work on the new showroom was completed last year in August and the exterior work last September. “We hope everyone in North Texas will stop by to visit our new showroom,” Frederick said. “It’s truly one of the nicest retail showrooms in the entire country. Customers will love working in this new

Kelby Frederick, owner of Flooring America, stands in the showroom which offers a wide variety of quality products. environment and will appreciate the comfortable atmosphere as they select the flooring of their dreams.” Frederick has lived in Denton County since 1979. He attended school in Lake Dallas and graduated from high school in 1989. His wife, Kristi, was born and raised in Flower Mound and graduated from Marcus High School in 1990. They both attended the University of North Texas. They have four children who were all born in Denton — Rylie, 10, Cooper, 7, Kenlie, 4, and Marlie, 2. Flooring America of Denton is a member of the Denton, Lake Cities and Aubrey chambers of commerce and the Denton Home Builders Association. Frederick is now serving on the board of directors for the World Floor Covering Association (WFCA) and also serves as the chairman of the Quality and Standards Committee within the organization. He is also a trustee and an adult discipleship teacher at GracePointe Church, which meets at Hero’s. He was also the recipient of the Flooring America National Award for Leadership in 2001, 2003 and 2004. The Flooring America of Denton store also received the Flooring America National Award for Merchandising in 2001. Flooring America of Denton is in the business of helping people create a beautiful home. As the business has grown, Frederick’s energies have shifted from working directly with the clients — to developing a successful working team. “It is a lot of fun to help people create the home of their dreams, because it is typically the biggest investment they will ever have,” he said. “It is a blast to work

with such great people [the team] and help them reach their dreams and goals while satisfying clients.” In the Retail Division, Flooring America of Denton’s typical client is someone who owns a home and is interested in redecorating or upgrading it to reflect his or her own unique taste. The store also has a large Outside Sales Division that provides service to a very diverse client base. It works with custom homebuilders, commercial contractors, designers, architects, churches, retirement centers, real estate brokers, foreclosures and property management companies, both commercial and residential. Flooring America of Denton also has a dedicated division that specializes in insurance claims — the business has a special program designed to provide service to a homeowner during a loss. The company is an approved vendor with State Farm, Farmers, Allstate, Nationwide, Encompass and USAA. “The bottom line is that our typical customer is anyone who needs flooring in just about any circumstance,” Frederick said. Flooring America of Denton provides materials and certified professional installation of carpeting, hardwood, ceramic tile, natural stone, laminate, vinyl and all flooring items. “The biggest misconception is that people think they can save money buying from home centers, national outlet chains and the Internet,” he said. “These companies do a fabulous job of advertising they are the low-price leader. However, when a client goes through the exercise of obtaining a full estimate to complete their floor-

ing project — the final result is a specialty store is the same price, if not cheaper.” Flooring America of Denton is unique as a specialty store because it has the largest buying power in the world, yet it offers the specialized service that only a locally owned company can provide. The store also uses only certified installers who undergo a criminal background check as well as an immigration check, which gives clients the most professional experience possible — along with the best warranties. The store offers an installation warranty for the life of the product, which is unique in the industry. Also, due to its massive buying power, the store offers clients exclusive products and warranties that are unmatched in the flooring industry. Its Downs Decade carpets have a 15year, no-exclusion, non-prorated stain warranty. All other 5 Star carpets also now carry a 15-year stain warranty, although there are some exclusions. All 5 Star hardwood, laminate, tile, and carpet products come with an exclusive Confidence Plus Warranty. This provides a 90-day full replacement warranty on material and labor if the customers are not happy with the style and color of the product they chose. Flooring America of Denton also has a Design Gallery full of the highest fashion products in the entire market. If someone needs flooring for any project — from a rental house to a million-dollar custom home to a commercial building — Flooring America of Denton can provide the best price, selection and installation possible. “Our tag line is ‘With you every step of the way,’” Frederick said. “Our objective is to provide our clients with the best possible experience — from shopping through installation. “We are not perfect, but our commitment is to stand beside our clients and take care of anything they need. Our business has been built on repeat and referral business. We do not believe in giving up after the installation. “Our desire is to create a relationship with our clients that lasts a lifetime and spans generations.” Flooring America of Denton and the Frederick family prove there is no reason to leave Denton for quality flooring. Flooring America of Denton is located at 3008 S. Interstate 35E, next to Achiever’s Gymnastics and near the Cinemark theater at Unicorn Lake. “Am I crazy to install a new furnace and air conditioner in your home... and give you an all new $2500 duct system?” (Plus, if you quality, you pay nothing for 6 months and I promise that your utility bills will be lower than they’ve been in a good long while. Guaranteed!) This may sound crazy, but… I am making a calculated business gamble. It will be a GREAT opportunity for you, if you can act quickly. And it will help me solve a minor seasonal (or inventory) problem I have. What’s it all about? Just this. I try to run a pretty ship shape business. I measure everything daily to see how we’re doing. I weigh advertising costs compared to results. I track how fast we can “turn” our inventory. I hire only the best technicians who are polite and “drug free” to install and service the heating and A/C systems in your home. And finally, I try to predict the weather. Why? Because if the weather is extremely hot or extremely cold, my phone rings off the hook, And we’re busy, busy. Antsy Technicians. But if the weather is mild, the phone doesn’t ring and my technicians get a little antsy. I hate to send them home when it’s slow. But I have no choice. That’s why I’ve come up with this plan that may sound “crazy” … but I think you’ll love it. Here’s my plan. I have 22 brand new air conditioning units and 22 new furnaces in stock right now. That’s too many. The weather is mild enough that I’m a little nervous about “inventory turns.” So, here’s my offer… I’ll install BOTH the A/C unit and the heater in your home if you call in time… for a great price and including manufacturer’s rebates of up to $1000. And, with your good credit, you don’t pay for 6 months.

Now, a new high efficiency heating and cooling system attached to a dirty, dilapidated, leaky duct system is just money going out the attic. With your new system I’ll include new, R-8 insulated (you probably have R-4) flexible duct with an airtight mastic seal

. This is normally a $2500 service that is FREE. The new, properly sealed ductwork alone could save you as much as 25% on your heating and cooling bill.

Act Now And Save. So, if you’re a wise homeowner… And you’re A/C unit or furnace is nine or 10 years old or older… Pick up the phone and CALL NOW… you could get a new A/C unit, a furnace, an all new duct system and save money on installation and utility bills. If you put this off, you might regret it later this summer when you end up replacing your system anyway and prices are back up to normal and the free duct system is not available. Don’t let someone else steal your opportunity, pick up the phone and take advantage of my situation while helping me at the same time. As always, my work is guaranteed. Parts AND labor. This new furnace and air conditioning system will give you years of trouble FREE service. Thank you in advance, for giving me the chance to serve you. You’ll get a great ivestment. And we’ll keep our crew busy again, and it will all even out. Hurry. Don’t miss this unique opportunity. Call now for your free home survey and offseason quote.

Tommy’s Auto Shops: Quality and Honesty 21

Tommy and Kathy Drisdale, owners of Tommy’s Hi Tech Auto and Tommy’s Honda and Toyota Shop in Denton have been providing quality service to Denton area customers for the past 17 years. Located at 620 and 219 Fort Worth Drive, respectively, these businesses are dedicated to providing top quality auto repair in a comfortable family atmosphere. An amazing 93% of Tommy’s customers come from referrals because people know that Tommy does all he can to provide the best solutions for repairing their vehicles. We know most of our customers personally and many have been with us since the day we opened. Tommy says that his customers can always count on him to “do the right thing.” As you may have noticed from his advertising he is a voice for the consumer trying to prevent people from spending money on services they do not need. His motto is “WE DO NOT SELL UN-NEEDED SERVICES” and he points out many of these services in his advertising. With ASE certified techs –Platinum Level GM tech, 2 Ford Certified techs and a tech certified by both Ford and GM, Tommy’s Hi Tech Auto provides up- to-date knowledge with the latest in diagnostic technology. A lifelong car buff, Tommy has worked as a mechanic most of his life and as a service manager at two dealerships. “I love the challenge of figuring out a problem when everyone else has thrown in the towel.” You will almost always find Tommy in the shop working on vehicles. Studying electronics for two years at DeVry in Dallas

Tommy and Kathy Drisdale, owners and working on electronics in the Army, Tommy has extensive knowledge of today’s computerized cars and technology. Kathy’s mother recalls Tommy putting circuit boards together on her living room floor when Tommy and Kathy were dating in high school. In 1991 Tommy opened his first shop on the corner of Bell and Prairie. His business grew steadily and five years later he needed more space. That is when he moved to his existing shop on Ft. Worth Dr. Then in 2006 he opened Tommy’s Honda and Toyota specializing in Honda’s, Toyota’s, Acura’s, and Lexus. With two shops, Tommy and Kathy have built a steady clientele who have come to appre-

ciate their business philosophy: “To give the best service on a professional level, using the finest parts and equipment available, finished on time, at a fair price and with all work guaranteed.” Tommy’s first love is airplanes. After reading and learning all he could about aircraft and with a little help from a pilot friend from Southwest Airlines, the duo designed and built one of the first ultra-light aircrafts in 1980. He moved to California to work in the research and development department of the largest ultra-light aircraft factory in the world. Participating in some air stunt shows, Tommy was one of the first to loop and roll an ultra-light, and has performed in air shows from Mexico to Oshkosh. The couple also enjoys the Halloween season, which is right around the corner. Several of their customers can relate to some of Tommy’s scare tactics which he has created for the haunted house that they put on every year at their home. Unfortunately there won’t be a haunted house this year for lack of space. They have located a larger area, but it just wasn’t available in time this year. It takes two or three months to set it up and they have hundreds of people go through. “Last year we had 400 people lined up in front of our house waiting to see my new creations. We put on a pretty good show.” Their haunted house was featured on “Texas Tales” WFAA Channel 8 a few years ago. Next year it will just be bigger and better. We look forward to seeing you then. invite you to come and talk with one of our personal bankers or lenders about how we can help you with any financial need you may be experiencing now.” PointBank’s current commitment is to be a “Better Way to Bank” through an investment in the same technology customers can find from larger banks, but keeping the Personal aspect of banking, which is considered the cornerstone of community banking. PointBank made a significant investment this year alone on new Deposit ATMs to offer both personal and business customers the flexibility of deposits before and after banking hours with added benefits like multi-check deposits, no envelope convenience and on-screen verification for accuracy and security of the customer’s funds. This is a big bank product, and PointBank is the only community bank offering this service in Denton County. PointBank is dedicated to community through its activity in the Denton Area Chamber, supporting local causes like the United Way, American Heart Association,

schools and non-profit organizations across Denton County. “We’re strong” David said, “and we’re focused on our customers – investing (over 2,500 hours and over ($200,000.00) last year in the communities where we live and work.” PointBank is built upon a strong foundation of good people, partnering in our customers’ personal and business financial growth, and is committed to the success of the community through programs like the Free Business Success Kit, which enhances the marketing opportunities for the small businesses in Denton County. For more than 117 years, through both thriving and uncertain economic times, PointBank has remained dedicated to our customers’ financial safety and growth. PointBank allows you to do banking whenever it is convenient for you, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and offers a variety of accounts to meet your specific banking needs. Woods of Mission Timber offers one-of-a-kind items Sanger business features quality showroom, uncommon woods, sawmill and shop operations

“I had no idea all this was here.” A phrase often said by first-time visitors to the showroom at Woods of Mission Timber in Sanger. The cozy showroom and gift shop features handmade items such as jewelry, art, rugs, pottery, and furniture. These one-of-a-kind items showcase many customers’ talents, and the majority of the items is also regionally or nationally award winning. Gay Pugh has a fabulous eye for handpicking items that she knows are unique and breathtaking. She strongly encourages well-known and beginning artists to push themselves in their work in order for their talents to become more known. Woods of Mission Timber highlights woodwork, sculptures, carvings, photographs, paintings, jewelry and more to spotlight the talents of customers who also happen to be master craftsmen and artists. “Many master craftsmen and artists do a great job of enhancing their talent and pieces with a special piece of wood,” Bob Pugh, owner, said. Gay has completed a Sanger Area Artist Directory that is available at local

Chamber of Commerce offices and the showroom for new and current residents to be more aware of the immense talent available in North Texas. After a breath-taking stroll around the showroom, one can enter the world of specialty woods right from this region via the Board Room. Bob Pugh can tell you anything you need to know about any kind of wood. His knowledge came from a passion he honed while building a lake house in East Texas. Using various woods, techniques, and finishes, he began the second career he never intended after hanging up his Delta Airlines wings 10 years ago. But he realized there was a need for gorgeous, specialty hardwoods, and Woods of Mission Timber was born. With the housing market gearing toward more individuality in every home, Bob realized that he can be that special supplier to the custom home builders, and provide everything from posts, sawmill and shop operations, and even a kiln to vacuum-dry woods that is high grade to be used for furniture and other custom projects.

“We have the ability to saw, dry, and mold the customer’s own logs,” Bob Pugh said. “Or, we sell rough cut lumber green [fresh], dried, tongue and grooved, beaded or center-matched.” Customers throughout North Texas and Southern Oklahoma have come to appreciate the uncommon woods available at Woods of Mission Timber, which is also now an associate member of the Greater Dallas Home Builders Association. In fact, Woods of Mission Timber carries mesquite - straight grain or burl, - bois D’Arc, eastern and western red cedar, cypress, black walnut, long leaf pine, and red and white oak. Many customers have custom mantles from their very own trees by having logs from their property cut into lumber for their home or other special projects. As a company, Woods of Mission Timber does not cut trees down, but salvages logs that would have otherwise gone to a landfill, burn pile, or other means of disposal. One prime example, which has turned into a major sector of business for Woods of Mission Timber, is recycling telephone

and electric poles that are made into lumber for trailer flooring or fencing. “For the rancher/farmer, we have reclaimed poles for trailer floors, fences, and stalls,” Bob Pugh said. “And, the quarter-rounds off these poles are often used as livestock fencing.” Also, cedar or cypress chips are available to purchase for livestock stalls, and the sawdust is recycled. Every bit of wood is used in some way at Woods of Mission Timber. From sawdust to mantles to fabulous art, Woods of Mission Timber is to educate, supply and fascinate all who walk through the doors. Be sure to stop by Woods of Mission Timber, 4203 West FM 455 in Sanger. For those unfamiliar with the region, go north on Interstate 35E to Sanger. Turn left on FM 455 West, exit number 478. Drive for one mile, and you will come to Woods of Mission Timber on your left. The business is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Call 940-458-4750 or visit www.woodsofmissiontimber.com for more information.

24 Ruby’s Diner: The place to be in Denton Accent On Business

Nancy and Ken Willis continue the tradition of service known by those who’ve been around Ruby’s Diner on the Square since it opened in 1987. Owners of the eatery for the past 13 years, the couple has become as much a part of the diner as it is to the community. Known for its breakfast coffee clique where old-timers stop in to trade quips, the restaurant at 111 N. Elm St. is also the place to be at lunch, where businessmen and businesswomen mingle with young families and older residents alike. The buffet-style lunches attract a steady crowd — the diner’s menu is a well-known topic of discussion around town. “What’s on Thursdays?” “It’s barbecue day, don’t you remember?” “Count me in then.” The conversations around the long group tables and the smaller four-person tables make the experience of dining at Ruby’s one to cherish. It’s not uncommon to see a City Council member, a sheriff ’s deputy, a police officer, a local attorney and even a journalist or two — all sharing bits of the day’s news. Owner Ken Willis often tops coffee cups and tea glasses, as time permits, chatting

Ruby’s patrons sip on coffee and chat around the table as part of a daily routine in the diner. with customers who have become more like family. “Every day always brings something different,” he said. “I get to see people I grew up with and have known all my life. I also get to watch the kids as they come in and grow up.” The restaurant’s walls feature photos

and news clippings depicting the flavorful mix of folks who make Ruby’s Diner on the Square a regular routine. Dishes popular among Denton residents range from the comforting chicken dumplings to the must-have chicken-fried steak — the same chicken-fried steak recipe once produced at the Charcoal Broiler, a Denton restaurant once owned and operated by Ken’s dad. “I grew up in this business,” Ken said. “It’s in my blood.” Nancy and Ken Willis are the third owners of the restaurant started by Ruby Faught. A longtime resident of Denton, Ken says he has always loved the city and the Square. “That’s why we bought Ruby’s,” he said. Members of the Willis family all are a part of the restaurant, with Ken overseeing operations and Nancy handling the accounting. Their children, Ralph and Kayla, have grown up as part of the business. In addition to the home-style fare, Ruby’s also serves up exotic game. The restaurant offers catering services for special occasions and has been a part of the many events around the Square each year.

Open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday through Saturday, the restaurant only closes twice a year — Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. On the other 363 days each year, the restaurant’s dedicated, longtime staff is willing and ready to serve the award-winning dishes at Ruby’s Diner. Honors have run the gamut from best home-style, most affordable awards from the Taste of North Texas to Best Breakfast and Best Pie awards from the Denton Record-Chronicle’s annual Best of Denton competition. In their spare time, members of the Willis family are very involved in the community as co-owners of Beth Marie’s OldFashioned Ice Cream Soda Fountain, in addition to their service with a number of organizations, including the Denton Main Street Association, Denton Chamber of Commerce, Denton Holiday Lighting Committee, University of North Texas athletics and much more. If you’re looking for a place to enjoy both a good meal and good company, be sure to stop by Ruby’s Diner on the Square. We’ll see you there.

Adams Furniture carries pieces for every room in the home. They also sell lamps, accessories, mirrors, armoires, home office furniture and bedding. “We strive to have unique pieces of furniture and accessories that you just don’t find everywhere,” says owner Jim Smith.

Adams Furniture keeps Justin cozy Adams Furniture is a fixture in local history, having furnished Justin homes for 78 years. Founded in 1929 by Mr. B.R. Adams, the store began as a complete smalltown full-line department store. “Adams moved to Justin from Navo and bought a general store that had everything — shoes, clothing and furniture,” current owner Jim Smith said. Over the years, Adams’ son and son-in-law took over the store, evolving with the times, carrying furniture and electronics such as radios and televisions along with appliances. “They sold the first refrigerators,” Smith said. Smith, a Justin resident since childhood, began working parttime at Adams Furniture in 1969 during high school and continued throughout his college years at the University of North Texas. In 1980, Smith became partners

“We’re committed to keeping up with the latest trends, styles and colors, but we’ll always maintain our quality.” — Jiim Smith, owner, Adams Furniture with Adams’ sons, and by 1982, he bought the store outright. Adams Furniture continues to be familyowned and operated, but has finetuned its store through the years by becoming solely a furniture store, carrying pieces for every room in the home. They also sell lamps, accessories,

mirrors, armoires, home office furniture and bedding. “We strive to have unique pieces of furniture and accessories that you just don’t find everywhere,” Smith said. Smith said their goal is to offer quality furniture at unbeatable prices, while establishing relationships with their customers that span generations. “We’re committed to keeping up with the latest trends, styles and colors, but we’ll always maintain our quality,” he said. While Justin is booming with new homes and an influx of new residents, Adams Furniture prides itself on “down home” service. “Service is very important,” Smith said. “We talk and spend a lot of time with our customers, giving them a real personal service.” Another advantage the store has is that two of Smith’s employees

have worked for the business for more than 10 years. Darrell Field and Eddie Romie, salespeople for Adams Furniture, have come to know the community well. “They’ve built a great rapport with our customers,” Smith said. Adams Furniture offers many name brands of furniture including Lane, Broyhill, Sealy, Riverside, Davis, Hickory Hill, Howard Miller and, most recently, Tempur-Pedic. Having been located in the same building since 1938, the business is able to sell furniture at greatly reduced prices because of its low overhead, Smith said. Also to help maintain low prices, Adams Furniture is part of a buying group, a 40-store cooperative that allows small dealers to purchase in truckload quantities at truckload prices. The co-op includes small independent furniture stores scattered

across the South. Smith said Adams Furniture has an advantage in the co-op because the main warehouse for the group is in Terrell. “This allows us to access a huge inventory,” Smith said, “and we can get something in tomorrow from the warehouse if a customer needs it.” The buying power of the co-op combined with the individualism of being independent keeps Adams Furniture customers’ shopping experiences personal. Adams Furniture offers delivery and complete set-up and is located in Justin approximately 4.5 miles off Interstate 35W, at the intersection of FM407 and FM156. Business hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and Friday and Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday. For more information, visit www.adamsfurniture.biz.
