Brave Combo expands group for Festival By Kit King For the Denton Record-Chronicle

As if Denton’s Brave Combo doesn’t offer enough magic as they close the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival each year, they’ve added a bonus, expanding the quintet to include Jennifer McLaughlin and Danny Jerabek. “We got rained out last year,” Carl Finch, founder and guitarist for the group said. “So we’re going to add something extra to the show this year.” Hometown heros, Brave Combo always has audiences doing the chicken dance, the hokey pokey and the polka. They are an integral part of the Denton scene, not just for music, but for their many contributions to the community. Many in Denton, however, may not realize their international status. The band has won two Grammy Awards and been nominated for their work 7 times. They provided music for numerous films, including Fools Rush In, The Personals, True Stories and more. TV audiences saw their avatars on The Simpsons, heard their music on Ugly Betty and Bakersfield PD and

PBS’s first animated series, As the Wrench Turns, based on the popular Click and Clack automotive columns and radio show. Next up, they hope, is an animated series, Taxi Dog, based on a children’s book about a New York taxi driver who found a dog. “We have our fingers crossed,” Finch said. They did the music for the pilot, produced by the same people who did the Click and Clack series. The band isn’t sitting around waiting for news. Their summer tour schedule is daunting, with 20 performances scheduled for June alone, in locations from New York to Houston. Finch claims the band’s strategy is “to wait around for famous people to discover us. And it’s worked. Record companies come to us … Drew Carey invited us to do shows at the MGM Las Vegas.” He makes it sound as if all that success was a happy accident. “Bob Dylan covered one of our songs on his Christmas album. We didn’t know that was going to happen.” Formed more than 30 years

ago, Brave Combo has maintained its base in Denton, despite its worldwide audience and performances. Band members include Finch, guitar, keyboard, accordion and vocals; Jeffrey Barnes, woodwinds, saxophone and vocals; Danny O’Brien, trumpet and vocals; Little Jack Melody, bass guitar; and Alan Emert, drums. Known first as the band that made polka cool, Brave Combo’s repertoire includes an unbelievable variety of styles: Rock, blues, classical, salsa, meringue, cumbia, conjunto, polka, zydeco, cha cha and more. You’ll hear it all at the closing of the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival.

Denton Arts & Jazz Festival

Festival offers something for everyone For the Denton Record-Chronicle

The economy is still tough and prices are rising everywhere. But the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival remains the best bargain around. This weekend you can enjoy great music, great art, great fun, all without an admission charge. The 20 acres of Quakertown Park will be filled with sound and color, with dancers and artists, and with audiences that range from stroller size to senior citizens. Begun as Spring Fling, a small event to raise money for the arts in Denton, the festival now draws more than 200,000 visitors on the last weekend in April. It offers something for every age and every taste—from kid’s games to fine art, from fair food to smooth jazz. With seven stages around the park, folks can listen to music ranging from the professional sounds of Lee Ritenour to the clear voices of the Woodrow Wilson Elementary All-Star Choir. They can watch dance performances by high

school drill teams, tiny ballerinas, even sultry Middle Eastern dancers. The juried art show includes more than 60 fine artists and crafters, whose work was chosen from more than 100 applicants. Oversized sculptures, delicate glass birdfeeders and metal yard art will appeal to those with a love of outdoor living. More than a dozen jewelry makers will show off their wire work, beading and metalsmithing skills in pieces that complement looks from casual to elegant. Potters and glass workers combine form with function in rustic clay vessels, delicate blown glass vases, stained glass windows, and the ever-popular tableware adorned with Texas bluebonnets. Woodworkers use exotic woods to create distinctive pens, cutting boards much too beautiful to actually touch with a knife, and richly patterned bowls and vases. Wall art takes the form of boldly colored acrylics or oils, stark pen and ink drawings,

Photographer Todd Adams’ canal scene delicate watercolors and intriguing collages incorporating fiber, metals, wood and other unusual materials. The youngsters can spend time on any number of games and activities. There is a

bounce house and a ferris wheel, train rides and mechanical bull, which might draw those who’ve left childhood behind. The food at the festival is typical fair fare, with a few

exotic twists. You’ll find cotton candy and roasted corn, turkey legs and hot dogs. If you want a more interesting taste, try crawfish or gyros, with a funnel cake for dessert.

Denton Arts & Jazz Festival

Festival offers fun for the youngsters By Kit King For the Denton Record-Chronicle

The Denton Arts and Jazz Festival offers kids a chance to romp around the park, play games, listen to music and create art. It’s a full weekend of fun for the youngsters. The Denton Festival Foundation members work hard to keep the festival an event designed for the whole family. Each year new entertainments attract the younger festival goers, while young performers take the stage to show off their accomplishments. The Children’s Art Tent gives the kids a chance to explore their creativity, with projects that range from working with clay to turning wood. This year, student members of the National Art Education Association from the University of North Texas, will oversee the tent and lead the children in their projects. “We’re going to do some recycled projects,” said Catherine Hamrick, who is heading up the activities. “They’ll be making bottle beings, figures made from plastic water bottles.” In addition, the kids will work with clay, print making, stamping and collage projects. “They will all make something they can take with them.” Hamrick is expecting around 5,000 children in the tent over Saturday and Sunday, and she will have 12 students each day to help and

guide the little budding artists. Again this year, members of the Golden Triangle Woodturners will be in the tent to help aspiring carpenters create bird houses and other wooden creations. Two long-time festival favorites will be entertaining the children as they create their art. Magician Al Curlett will be fascinating the kids with his tricks and balloon sculptures, and Joel Reese, the singing cowboy, has a bag full of songs to perform. A jazz educator and performer, Steve Gryb will once again bring his percussion petting zoo to the festival. This hands-on exhibit of percussion instruments gives the kids a chance to try out instruments, both traditional and most unusual. In addition to the familiar drums and xylophones, Gryb’s collection of more that 2,000

The Wrenchophone is a variation of the xylophone with tuned wrenches, and the Glockenfish is a fish-shaped xylophone. The Clatterpillar is a set of dominos made to create

rippling sounds, while the Spring Drum creates the sound of thunder. Youngsters will show off their musical talents, as well as. On the Target Center Stage inside the Denton Senior Center, and the Wells Fargo

Veteran festival goers will see a big change at the 2012 Denton Arts & Jazz Festival. Stages are moving from one end of the park to the other, all in the name of safety and comfort for the audiences. Filled with music, art, food, fun and games, the festival brings more than 200,000 to Quakertown park on the last weekend in April. “We’re making these logistical changes because our crowds just keep getting larger and larger,” explained Carol Short, executive director of the Denton Festival Foundation, which sponsors the event. “This new arrangement will make more room for audiences, as well as make the park safer for all.” The Wells Fargo/Budweiser Jazz Stage will move to the north side of the park, while the south area outside the Civic Center will hold the Budweiser Courtyard Stage, where professional rock and blues musicians perform. The Wells Fargo Celebration Stage, home to community, school and university bands will stand on the lawn in front of Denton City Hall. The other four stages will remain in their usual positions. The KNTU-FM Radio Roving River Stage with its ethnically diverse and acoustic music sets up behind the Emily Fowler Library. The Denton Record Chronicle Festival Stage will be next to the Denton Senior Center, and the Target Center Stage will be inside the Senior Center. Both these stages feature community and school groups. The University of North Texas Showcase Stage, where UNT

School of Music performance groups appear will be located next to the Civic Center Pool. The Denton Police Department will be working to ensure the safety of audiences. As many as 30 officers will be patrolling the park in a 24 hour period, according to Denton Police Chief Lee Howell. “The festivals have historically been very safe, fun events with very little problems. I think we may have to make only two or three arrests a year at most,” he said. This year, the police will be enforcing city ordinances strictly: No glass containers in the park. No exotic animals such as boa constrictors, iguanas and monitor lizards (all of which have been seen in past years). “These animals are prohibited from being kept in the city limits under our prohibited animal ordinance,” Howell noted. More conventional pets are discouraged by festival officials, in fact, they have contemplated requesting a ban on dogs at the event. The huge crowds and noise can cause stress for the most gentle of pets. “There have been a few minor incidents regarding unsocial animals in recent years,” Howell said, adding that leash laws would be strictly enforced. “It gets so crowded at times … that people are stepping over or around both people and dogs, and this is sometimes hard to manage. People may be asked to remove their pets or leave the park if they do not keep (the animals) restrained.”

Nine years ago, Los Lonely Boys literally burst onto the music scene, selling millions with their first album and winning a Grammy. Saturday at 9 pm, they will burst onto the Jazz Stage at the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival to bring their signature Texican rock ‘n’ roll sound to the audience. While 2003 was the beginning of a career that keeps getting better and better, the three brothers were no strangers to the stage. Henry, Jojo and Ringo Garza grew up playing behind their father in cantinas and clubs around Texas. In their teens, the brothers moved to from San Angelo to Nashville to take a shot at recording. They returned to

Texas and worked the club scene before they released their first album in 2003. In 2008, PBS aired a documentary on the band titled Cottonfields and Crossroads, described as a “moving account that brings to life Los Lonely Boys’ incredible personal musical journey. The film merges live performance video with intimate conversations to tell the story. The boys took a look back in 2009 with 1969, a record that brings to life their roots in songs by The Beatles, The Doors and Buddy Holly. This year, they have released Rockpango, their first self-produced album. It combines fandango, huapango and TexMex American rock to produce a rollicking party sound. It is a demonstration of their maturing musical talents.

Featured festival artist has original, colorful style

Arts & Jazz Fest

Travelling from show to show across the country, the went from New York to Key West, from Minnesota to Arizona, doing about 30 shos each year. Early this year, the couple bought a house in Colorado, but they haven’t given up their RV or their traveling. Quaglino says his favorite artists are Picasso, Calder, Warhol, Matisse, LeRoy Neiman and Peter Max, and people often say they see these influences in his work. It is not intentional, he said, but is probably inevitable. He set out to develop an original, colorful style. “The primary subject in a piece is overlaid by a set of carefully designed straight and/or curved lines.

By Kit King For the Denton Record-Chronicle

Andy Quaglino, a selftaught painter from Lubbock was chosen as the featured artist for the 2012 Denton Arts & Jazz Festival. His vivid montage of musical instruments will be seen aon all the printed materials for the festival, as well as the front of the 2012 festival T-shirts.

Quaglino was particularly pleased to be selected because he said the arts & jazz festival was, “one of the ones we enjoy the most. The whole feel of the show was that it’s a community event. And, we loved listening to the music.” Quaglino had been painting while holding down a fulltime job, but he and his wife Debie had discussed buying

an RV and traveling the US doing shows. After Debie had a successful battle with breast cancer in 2005, they decided it was time to follow up on their dream. In January of 2006 they acquired an RV and began three months of travel across the Southwest. In 2008, they sold their home in Austin and began a nomadic life.

earns 22 Festival two awards Arts & Jazz Fest

04 25 12

By Kit King For the Denton Record-Chronicle

The Denton Arts & Jazz Festival always gets top billing from enthusiastic audiences and supporters. Now, it has received recognition from two outstanding organizations. The American Business Association (ABA) named it one of the Top 100 Events in North America, and Texas Woman’s University (TWU) gave it the prestigious Founders’ Award. In the ABA announcement, the festival was described as offering “excellent entertainment value to both tour groups and individual travelers from around the world.” “The attractiveness of the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival … is only part of why its selection is such a distinction for Denton, said Peter J. Pantuso, ABA president and CEO. “The real news is that the (festival) has been recognized as a potential magnet for tourism dollars. (It) gives Denton an important boost in visibility among professional tour planners.” In selecting it from the hundreds of events nominated, judges considered its accessibility to motorcoaches and skill in handling large groups, along with a variety of other criteria. The TWU Founders’ Awards recognize both the support for the education mission of TWU, and the leadership in and dedication to the Denton community. Dr. Ann Stuart, president and chancellor of TWU, presented the award at the annual Founders’ Day Awards Scholarship luncheon on April 5.

It takes thousands of man hours to put together the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival, and for the most part, those man hours come from volunteers. Planning for the next year begins almost immediately after the close of the festival. Denton Festival Foundation

board members begin the task of setting up for the following year. From arranging for headline performers, inviting some of the top visual artists in the country to apply for places at the show to applying for grants and seeking sponsorships, the board’s work continues all year. At festival time, hundreds of enthusiastic workers, called

Top Hands, show up to man booths and do the myriad other chores required to make

the festival run smoothly. This year, the need for volunteers is even greater than in years past.

Lee Ritenour set to perform on Friday By Kit King For the Denton Record-Chronicle

Jazz, Latin, rock and blues. Lee Ritenour does it all, and does it with a distinctive sound. This celebrated guitarist will perform Friday at 9 pm, with a group that includes Academy Award and Grammy winning arranger and pianist Dave Grusin. A Los Angeles native, Ritenour began his career early. At age 16 he was working with greats such as the Mamas and Papas, Lena Horne and Tony Bennett. Over his 40year career, his collaborations have included some of the biggest names in music. Grusin is his most frequent collaborator. In the 70s, Ritenour plaed at the famed Baked Potato with a band that included Grusin, Patrice Rushen, Harvey Mason and Ernie Watts, drawing such names as Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell in the audiences. He was a founding member of Fourplay, a contemporary

jazz band, with Bob James, Nathan East and Harvey Mason. Fourplay’s first album in 1991 stayed at the top of Billboard’s chart for an amazing 33 weeks. He has recorded more than 40 albums, had 18 Grammy nominations, a Grammy win and 35 chart songs. But live performances are his joy. “I’ve played all over the world, and I love connecting with people, from small clubs to big festivals,” he said. “I love the traveling.” He also loves giving back, and he does it through the Six String Theory, a competition he established with Yamaha, the Berkley College of Music and others three years ago. Open to students of guitar, bass, piano and drums 16 and older, it awards scholarships to Berkley College of Music, along with other prizes. “We’re giving out four full scholarships, along with a number of other prizes,” he said, adding that the total value of scholarships and prizes has reached $625,000.

“Because we’ve extended the hours to 11 pm on Friday night, we’ve added another shift,” said Carrell Ann Simmons, who is in charge of volunteers for the festival. “That means we have 687 slots to fill.” A daunting task, but one that is essential to the production of the event. “Without the Top Hands, the festival couldn’t be free. There is no way we could afford to pay all those workers,” she said. In addition, the dues from Top Hand members raise significant funds, amounting to about a $6,000 contribution to the Arts & Jazz Festival

treasury. With membership, Top Hands have reserved parking, coupons for food and drink, a $1 discount on festival Tshirts, and access to the Women’s Club Building. “One of the problems we’ve had in the past was a lack of parking,” Simmons noted. This year, festival officials have arranged for reserved parking about a block from the festival grounds, almost doubling the spaces for festival volunteers. If you would like to join this enthusiastic group of workers, you can sign up on the festival website at www.dentonjazzfest.com, or call Simmons at 940-367-8311.
