Car care tips prepare vehicles for fall, winter driving It’s foolhardy to head out in a poorly maintained vehicle in the dead of winter, of course, but even vehicle owners in temperate zones need a car care check as the days grow shorter, note the pros with the nonprofit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), an independent group that tests and certifies the competence of auto technicians. “Regular, routine maintenance can help improve your gasoline mileage, reduce pollution, and catch minor problems before they become big headaches,” says Tony Molla, vice president of communications at ASE. ASE offers these car care tips to give you peace of mind during fall and winter driving: • Before you do anything else, read your owner’s manual and follow the manufacturer’s recommended service schedules. • Get engine performance and driveability problems —

hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc. — corrected at a reputable repair shop that employs ASE-certified repair professionals. Cold weather makes existing problems worse. • Replace dirty filters, such as air, fuel, and PCV. A poorly running engine is less efficient and burns more gasoline. • As the temperature drops below freezing, add a bottle of fuel deicer in your tank once a month to help keep moisture from freezing in the fuel line. Keeping the gas tank filled also helps prevent moisture from forming. • Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual — more often if your driving is mostly stop-and-go or consists of frequent short trips. A poll of ASE Master Auto Technicians revealed that regular oil and filter changes is one of the most frequently neglected services, yet one that is essential to pro-

tect your engine. • The cooling system should be flushed and refilled as recommended. The level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically. A 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water is usually recommended. Do-It-Yourselfers: Never remove the radiator cap until the engine has thoroughly cooled! The tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps, and hoses also should be checked regularly by a professional technician. • The heater and defroster must be in good working condition for passenger comfort and driver visibility. • Replace old blades regularly. If your climate is harsh, purchase rubber-clad (winter) blades to fight ice build-up. Stock up on windshield washer solvent — you’ll be surprised how much you use during the winter months. And don’t forget to always carry an ice scraper. • Have your battery checked.

The only accurate way to detect a weak battery is with professional equipment. However, most motorists can perform routine care: Wear eye protection and protective rubber gloves. Scrape away corrosion from posts and cable connections; clean all surfaces; retighten all connections. If battery caps are removable, check fluid level monthly. A word of caution: Removal of cables can cause damage or loss of data/ codes on some newer vehicles, so always check your owner’s manual first. Be sure to avoid contact with corrosive deposits and battery acid. • Inspect all lights and bulbs. Replace burned out bulbs; periodically clean road grime from all lenses. To prevent scratching, never use a dry rag. Clouded lenses can be refinished by many service outlets or by using a DIY kit found in major auto parts outlets. • Exhaust fumes inside your

vehicle’s cabin can be deadly. Have the exhaust system examined for leaks and problems while the vehicle is on a lift. The trunk and floorboards should also be inspected for small holes. • Worn tires are dangerous in winter weather. Examine tires for remaining tread life, uneven wearing, and cupping; check the sidewalls for cuts and nicks. Check tire pressure once a month, letting the tires “cool down” before checking the pressure. Rotate as recommended. Don’t forget to check your spare, and be sure the jack is in good working condition. Under-inflated tires or poorly aligned wheels makes your engine work harder and thus use excess gasoline. • Have your brakes checked periodically for safety and to prevent costly repairs that can be caused by neglect. • The transmission is often neglected until a major failure. Routine checks and fluid chang-

es at prescribed intervals can prevent very costly repairs down the line. • Always carry an emergency kit with you: extra gloves, boots and blankets; flares; a small shovel and sand or kitty litter; tire chains; a flashlight and extra batteries; and a cell phone and extra car charger. Put a few “high-energy” snacks in your glove box. The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) was founded in 1972 as a nonprofit, independent organization dedicated to improving the quality of automotive service and repair through the voluntary testing and certification of automotive technicians. ASEcertified technicians wear blue and white ASE shoulder insignia and carry credentials listing their exact area(s) of certification. Their employers often display the blue and white ASE sign.

2014 Ford Fusion heads into sophomore season with more features New colors inside and out Since its debut at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the new Fusion has been acclaimed as a design leader in the midsize sedan segment and honored with numerous awards including Autoweek magazine’s Best in Show and the EyesOn Design Award for Design Excellence – Production Vehicle. For 2014 several new color combinations are available starting with two new exterior colors, Dark Side and Sunset. Fusion SE customers who prefer the carryover Sterling Gray exterior can opt for the Dune interior with either cloth or leather seating surfaces. The new Interior Appearance Package for Fusion Titanium includes premium leather seating surfaces and vinyl door inserts finished in Brick Red along with premium floor mats. No matter what the climate, Fusion helps to keep things comfortable in the cabin. Titanium customers can add cooled

seats for the driver and front passenger for those steamy summer days. When the temperature drops, the available heated steering wheel will keep the driver’s fingers warm. Fusion SE drivers who get the Luxury Package can now open doors and start the engine without reaching for a key thanks to Intelligent Access with push-button start. Helping to keep passengers safe Safety experts acknowledge that the back seat is the safest place for children and Ford is committed to keeping all vehicle occupants safe. The optional inflatable rear seat belts that Ford debuted on the 2011 Ford Explorer are now available on Fusion for the first time. In the event of a collision the rear belts inflate, distributing the load over a larger area and reducing the risk of abdominal, chest and shoulder injuries for rear passengers. More choice of power

“EcoBoost is a technology that’s really resonating with customers around the world and especially in the United States,” said Joe Bakaj, vice president of powertrain engineering. “Since introducing EcoBoost to the respective lineups, more than 40 percent of F-150, 51 percent of Fusion and nearly 90 percent of Escape vehicles have been sold with one of these advanced engines.” The 1.5-liter is the fifth member of Ford’s family of fuel-efficient EcoBoost engines. Like the other engines in the lineup, this new powerplant features turbocharging, direct gasoline injection and twin independent variable camshaft timing. The 1.5-liter also adopts several design features that debuted on the award-winning 1.0-liter threecylinder EcoBoost engine coming to the 2014 Ford Fiesta. Just as with the 1.0-liter, the engineers focused on reducing internal friction and weight of the 1.5-liter while improving specific output.

Reducing unnecessary work has been a major focus on all Ford vehicles in recent years, and the 1.5-liter EcoBoost adds a major new innovation with a clutched water pump. Instead of pumping coolant through the engine continuously even when it is cold, this is the first Ford engine that decouples the water pump until it is needed. This enables the engine to warm up faster for reduced cold-start emissions and fuel consumption and more comfort on cold winter mornings. Like the 1.0-liter, the new 1.5liter EcoBoost engine features a water-cooled, integrated exhaust manifold. Casting the cylinder head and exhaust manifold as a single unit reduces overall weight, simplifies assembly, and gets the turbocharger closer to the exhaust ports for improved responsiveness. Integrating the manifold also enabled the engineers to run cooling circuits alongside the hot exhaust passages, further speeding warm-up.

A liquid-cooled charge air cooler on the 1.5-liter further simplifies the engine packaging while shortening the path from the turbocharger to the cylinder for improved response when the driver presses the accelerator pedal. Even with a smaller displacement, the 1.5-liter engine is projected to deliver approximately the same power and torque as the 1.6-liter in the 2013 Ford Fusion, while improving fuel economy and providing improved driveability. More grip for enthusiast drivers

Since its debut in 2012, the Ford Fusion has been widely praised by reviewers and customers for its outstanding driving dynamics including excellent balance between ride quality and handling, as well as exceptional steering feel. For 2014 enthusiast drivers can up the ante with an optional summer-only tire package with 19-inch alloy wheels. The Ford Fusion is produced at Ford’s Hermosillo, Mexico, manufacturing facility, soon adding production at Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Flat Rock, Mich.

Redesigned global best-selling Mazda3 offers all-new technologies in fuel efficiency Highly-anticipated and much-speculated, the 2014 Mazda3 is all-new, representing the third generation of Mazda’s best-selling vehicle worldwide. With more than 3.5 million vehicles sold, Mazda3 is the brand’s most recognizable nameplate, one that carries as much ardor as it does expectations. As the first vehicle in North America to launch SKYACTIV®[1] TECHNOLOGY, Mazda’s breakthrough engineering and manufacturing philosophy, the 2012 Mazda3 achieved the new segment-defining number of 40 miles per gallon (mpg) with nary a vehicle evolution but a definitive engineering revolution. SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY presented impressive numbers on paper with its high fuel economy to fun-factor performance ratio being 1:1, and met or bettered those figures in real-world experience. For 2014, Mazda3 not only receives the full suite of SKYACTIV technologies but a complete KODO “Soul of Motion” makeover as well as offers all-new active safety technologies with iACTIVSENSE and introduces an all-new “heads-up” HMI/infotainment system known as MAZDA CONNECT™. “No doubt one of the most important launches for Mazda in recent memory, if not the most important, the all-new 2014 Mazda3 is as eye opening as it is door opening,” says Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO). “Mazda3 introduced SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY to North America with great success. Mazda3 again is the leader in new product technology with i-ACTIVSENSE and MAZDA CONNECT, two all-new technology suites to further push the envelope of expectations in vehicle safety and comfort.” On sale now, the 2014 Mazda3 is 100-percent removed from its non-SKYACTIV predecessors. Shedding pounds, gaining efficiency and outfitted in a new wardrobe of KODO sheet metal, Mazda3 is poised to chal-

lenge its competitive-natured compact car colleagues. Available in four-door and five-door forms, Mazda3 is offered in four trim levels – SV (sedan only), Sport, Touring and Grand Touring. Pricing starts at less than $17,000[2] MSRP for sedans and less than $19,000 MSRP for five-door configurations. Measured Balance Lower and leaner, the 2014 Mazda3 sits on a wheelbase of 106.3 inches, which is 2.4 inches longer than the previous generation, yet the sedan is 0.6 inches shorter in overall length at 180.3 inches. The five-door extends to a smaller 175.6 inches, a savings of 1.8 inches from the previous model. With a height of 57.3 inches and a width of 70.7 inches, the Mazda3 reduces its overall height by 0.6 inches and gains 1.6 inches in its toned hips, all while retaining similar headroom space and offering comfortable a rear legroom are of 35.8 inches. The rear seatbacks were lengthened nearly 2.0 inches for added passenger comfort. Front and rear shoulder room also was increased – 2.3 inches to 57.2 inches in front, 0.4 inches to 54.4 inches in the second row. Conceived with efficiency of space and engaging comfort in mind, the all-new Mazda3 packs a powerful punch far above its weight class. Evidence is a first glance at its aggressive-yet-refined character lines courtesy of KODO. Whether outfitted with the standard 16-inch full-cover steel wheels or higher trim-equipped 16-inch and 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels each set expresses fluid motion, one tire rotation at a time. The vehicle’s cab rearward posture and highly raked profile further emphasize its sophisticated agility. The new familial face that is KODO design leaves little to the imagination and much to be desired as every nuance and twist of each purpose-filled sheet metal stroke creates an ever-attractive feast for the eyes. From the dynamic signature wing of the five-point grille to the expansive hood cresting over sleekly slanted

headlamps, and through the wide-stance muscular fenders flexing into taut character lines from panel to panel, KODO begets the Mazda3 a presence like no other. And each chiseled feature is not without reason as both sedan and five-door models achieve a best-in-class coefficient of drag (Cd) at 0.255 and 0.275, respectively, when equipped with active grille shutters and i-ELOOP, the world’s first capacitor-based regenerative engine braking system to power all of a vehicle’s electrical components. Sedans without iELOOP have a Cd of 0.26 while five-door versions have a 0.28 Cd. All figures are improvements over the previous model year. Mounted in front of the radiator, the active grille shutters automatically open and close in accordance with driving conditions to improve aerodynamic performance while contributing to real-world gains in fuel economy. Both are all-new features for the Mazda3. With its name derived from “Intelligent Energy Loop,” iELOOP is a capacitor-based regenerative engine braking system that converts a vehicle’s kinetic energy into electricity as the car when the accelerator pedal is released. The electricity captured is then stored for later use to power all the vehicle’s electrical components, such as headlights, climate controls and audio systems. This reduces the need for the engine to burn extra fuel in order to generate electricity and, therefore, improves fuel economy without sacrificing driving performance. While the increased engine braking caused

by the hard-charging alternator is too small for drivers to feel, the smooth power delivery coming from the capacitor means the electrical systems do not operate differently with i-ELOOP. Exact fuel savings will vary based on electrical load and individual driving habits. Inspired Interior The interior is just as expressive and purposeful, starting with the driver-oriented cockpit. In following with Mazda’s Jinba-Ittai philosophy of a rider and horse connected as one, everything from the arrangement of switches and knobs to the physical location of driving controls such as the shifter, the driver (rider) and Mazda3 (horse) perfect an understood dance to the melody of winding S-curves and long straightaways. For example, the pedals have been laid out symmetrically to the left and right of the driver’s center-line for further precision and comfort. A new hinged organ-type accelerator pedal is now standard equipment for added safety as well as lessens the natural fatigue associated with frequent pedal pressure, such as during stop-and-go commutes. Another example of Mazda’s design and engineering teams’ attention to detail is the location of the A-pillars. Repositioned 3.9 inches rearward increases the range of vision for all occupants and adds precision to driving maneuvers. The outside mirrors also are mounted onto the doors instead of the industry-norm placement being at the base of the A-pillar post. This location allows for an expanded scope of visibility when looking over mirrors at what was once a

blind spot. Designed not only to appeal to the senses, each control and function has been specifically placed with intuitive utility in mind. The less time spent focusing on adjusting switches and tapping on-screen touch-display commands, the more time a driver is engaged in the act of driving, remaining alert to what is on the road ahead, which allows for quick, accurate and less impulsive reactions to everchanging road conditions. A seamless and instinctive interior makes for a safer, more enjoyable driving and riding experience. The 2014 Mazda3 also is the first vehicle to feature Mazda’s all-new Active Driving Display, a clear pop-up panel that is vertically mounted behind the meter hood to provide vehicle speed, navigation directions and other pertinent driving information safely and directly within the driver’s line of sight. This feature not only decreases the amount of time a driver is focused away from the road ahead but the virtual information display being located beyond the instrument panel falls in line with where a driver’s eyes would naturally be looking. The Active Driving Display automatically folds back into a hidden position when the ignition is shut off. The redesigned meter cluster features a centrally-positioned analog gauge flanked by a pair of wing-shaped digital displays. The dial face for the center gauge is characterized by threedimensional metallic numerals while its red-ringed border pulses in brightness when the driver’s door is opened, a flirty wink to the vehicle’s inescapable sporty DNA. From the gauge clusters extends a decorative dash panel outfitted in satin chrome with piano black trim pieces adorning select areas of the center console and front door inserts. The superior feel of the various textures, grains and touch points provides an unexpected yet definitive above-segment feeling of quality. The seat architecture and

materials also have been paid close attention to. A two-toned almond-colored leather seat trim is new for 2014 and features contrasting gray stitching to emphasize craftsmanship in the needlework patterns while red thread is used with the black leather seat trim. The seats’ structure was reshaped with an added focus on comfort, space and weight yet did not sacrifice its sporty look and feel. For example, a minimalist approach to the front seatbacks reduced their width and thickness, providing more knee room for rear seat passengers when compared to the previous model year. Shoulder room for all occupants was increased as well. Additionally, the driver’s seat cushion was made larger and the seat back optimized to create a more natural seating position with ample lateral support, a welcome modification for those entertaining long commutes. Available in cloth (Black, Sand), leatherette (Black) and leather (Black, Almond) seat materials, the multitude of exterior and interior color combinations and accents further showcases the attention made to the finer interior points and to the varying degree of consumer preferences. Unplugged Yet Connected All new for Mazda vehicles and being launched with the 2014 Mazda3 is a new HMI (Human Machine Interface) approach and MAZDA CONNECT, a next-generation infotainment system. Based on the heads-up cockpit concept, the new HMI system aims to help drivers maintain proper posture, concentrate on the road and drive more safely, even while handling larger amounts of data. The information used is divided into groups, and an innovative screen layout is employed to let the driver safely balance their primary job of driving while obtaining other peripheral information. MAZDA CONNECT was developed to be a less distracting in-vehicle operating system.

Toyota Texas produces one millionth truck It’s been said that the stars at night are big and bright, deep in the heart of Texas. However, in San Antonio, Toyota trucks are shining bright. Recently, the 2,800 team members at Toyota Texas, on the city’s South Side, celebrated the milestone of assembling the plant’s one millionth truck – a Sunset Bronze Mica colored, 1794 Edition Tundra - with one thing in mind: satisfied customers. “We are grateful for our loyal customers across North America who tell us they love driving Texas-built Tacomas and Tundras,” said Chris Nielsen, president of Toyota Texas. “It makes me incredibly proud of our team members and 21 on-site suppliers every time I see one of our trucks on the road knowing that safety and quality are built into every one of them.” Toyota Texas produces the Tacoma and Tundra trucks and will celebrate its 10 year anniversary since groundbreaking this fall. The new 1794 Edition Tun-

dra is a tribute to the ranch, founded in 1794, on which the truck plant is located.

Some notable facts and stats about Toyota Texas and the one millionth truck milestone:

• If you lined up the one million trucks Toyota Texas has produced, it would stretch approxi-

mately 3,700 miles; or approximately from The Alamo to Honolulu, Hawaii.

• The redesigned 2014 Tundra is among Toyota’s most American vehicle ever. Styling was completed by Calty Design Research centers in Newport Beach, Calif., and Ann Arbor, Mich.; and it was engineered by the Toyota Technical Center, also in Ann Arbor. • V6 and V8 engines for all Tacomas and Tundras are manufactured at Toyota’s Huntsville, Ala., engine plant; all transmissions are manufactured in Durham, N.C. • Production at the plant began in October 2006 with the Tundra. Tacoma production was added in the summer of 2010. • 21 on-site suppliers, who employ 2,900, have had a big hand in ensuring that quality, durability and reliability are built into every truck. Explore the tradition and experience the innovation behind the best trucks in the world. Free weekday plant tours at Toyota are available to the public. 2014 Corolla focuses on aerodynamics By Casey Williams I pity the fool who thinks the Toyota Corolla is an exciting car. I’ve seen built-in refrigerators with more spunk. However, I venture to guess excitement is not high on the list of millions of very satisfied Corolla owners. Heading into its eleventh generation, Toyota’s famous compact is ready to reward those who love it along with a few actually looking for a little fun - all without losing anything that makes the Corolla an industry benchmark. Rattling off the car’s accomplishments takes some time. It has been on the market for 47 years, is built in 16 locations, sells in 154 countries, and over 40 million have been sold, making it the world’s best-selling auto-

motive nameplate of all time. That’s about 8 million more cars than the venerable VW Beetle and nearly 25 million more than Old Henry’s Model T. A true global car, it accomplishes the mission stated by Tatsuo Hasegawa, Corolla’s first chief engineer, “to develop a car that brings happiness and well-being to people around the world.” Refined Style Apparently, at least one of Corolla’s satisfied customers asked for more style. Its chiseled exterior design was previewed with the Corolla Furia Concept at this year’s Detroit auto show. Compared to the last couple of generations, which appeared tall and narrow, the 2014 model has wheels pushed to the corners, short overhangs, and a notice-

ably squatter stance. Focus on aerodynamics, to enhance fuel economy and reduce wind noise, yields an impressive 0.28 drag coefficient. An expressive front view is highlighted by a trapezoidal grill, thin air intake below the hood, and compact LED lamps assemblies. Corolla is the first compact sedan to come standard with LED headlamps, which not only look beautiful, but reduce weight and allow for more creative designs. Moving rearward, there is more body surfacing and a sloping C-pillar for a more upscale appearance. Around back, sculpted taillights and optional rear spoiler continue the sportier, richer theme. Designers clearly had an

epiphany inside as well. Gone is the mono-tone bland plasticiness, replaced by stitch-look dash coverings, piano black finishes, and style copied from the Avalon. Rear seat passengers will notice much more legroom. Nobody would call the last Corolla noisy, but engineers paid attention to road and wind rumble to enhance the traveling experience. Push button starting, auto A/C, heated front seats, and Toyota’s Entune™ infotainment system hit the options list. Spirited Performance Kicking this style fest down the road is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 132 horsepower. An optional enhanced 1.8-liter four-cylinder increases output to 140 horsepower. To maximize fuel economy

and to finally send the fourspeed automatic to its permanent reward, the engines connect to a continuously-variable transmission with seven pre-set shift points when in manual mode. Drivers can choose ECO or SPORT driving modes, depending on their mood. Fuel economy has not been released, but should touch 40-MPG in ECO mode. My absolute biggest complaint about the outgoing Corolla was its susceptibility to wind and the vague video game feel of its electric power steering system. Crosswinds would blow and you couldn’t dial the car back in line, causing over-correcting and oscillations. It was frustrating because the car otherwise rode and drove very well.

Engineers made the body more rigid, which allowed them to better tune the independent front/torsion beam rear suspension system. Attachment points for the rear suspension were also changed to improve rear handling, grip, and stability. Corolla’s new electric power steering was calibrated to enhance feel and add the impression of weight (although, the car weighs less than 2,900 lbs.). Optional 17” alloys and a wider stance should also help. Toyota clearly received the message as the Honda Civic, Chevy Cruze, Ford Focus, Dodge Dart, Hyundai Elantra, and many others are quite excellent. Prices have not been announced, but are expected to be very close to current stickers.

Limited • New color LCD information screen between the tachometer and speedometer standard on SE and Limited • New ventilated driver seat standard on Limited • New LED dome light - optional on GLS and standard on SE and Limited • New carbon fiber trim standard on SE NVH IMPROVEMENTS HAPPEN AT HYUNDAI SPEED Since the launch of the current generation in 2010 as a 2011 model, Sonata has undergone significant changes to reduce cabin noise. These engineering changes will be noticed immediately by driver and passengers: • New 17- and 18-inch wheels to reduce road noise inside the cabin • Improved carpet insulating properties to block road and engine noise • Additional foam in the A and B pillar to reduce road noise • Additional dynamic damper to improve road noise ADVANCED POWERTRAINS Sonata continues to be powered by the acclaimed Theta II GDI 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. This engine continues to lead the mid-size segment in specific output more than three years after its initial introduction. Much of its advantage derives from its advanced Gasoline Direct-Injection (GDI) fuel delivery system, which contributes to increased horsepower and improved fuel efficiency. This higher pressure, more direct path of fuel delivery allows for greater control of the fuel mixture at the optimum moment, thus improving efficiency. The fuel is injected by a camshaftdriven, high-pressure pump that operates at pressures up to 2,175 psi. Direct injection also enables a higher-than-normal 11.3:1 compression ratio for increased power. The pistons are “dished” to increase combustion efficiency in the cylinder.

Sonata delivers an impressive 24 mpg city/35 mpg EPA estimated highway fuel economy rating with the standard sixspeed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC®. The Theta II GDI engine produces 190 horsepower and 179 lb.-ft. of torquei. In the SE trim, which includes a standard dual exhaust, the engine delivers 192 horsepower and 181 lb.-ft. of torque. This high-tech, all-aluminum, 16-valve engine also features Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (DCVVT) and a Variable Induction System (VIS) for better engine breathing. With the 2.0-liter Theta II turbocharged GDI engine, the 2014 Sonata offers an unprecedented combination of fuel efficiency and power – with 274 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 269 lb.-ft of torque from 1,650 4,500 rpm and an EPA estimated 21mpg city and 32 mpg highway with regular fuel. Hyundai’s turbocharged engine features a twin-scroll turbocharger that when combined

with the GDI system, results in instantaneous power delivery. The 2.0T engine is available on the SE and Limited trim levels. The Sonata 2.0T SE adds a sport tuned exhaust for the 2014 model year. All 2014 Sonatas feature a six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC® manual control. ADVANCED STANDARD SAFETY TECHNOLOGIES: PART OF HYUNDAI’S ASSURANCE COMMITMENT The 2014 Sonata now offers Hyundai’s Blind Spot Detection system (BSD). Using advanced sonar sensors, this system continually monitors traffic around the Sonata and if another vehicle is detected within a set distance, audio and visual elements alert the driver to the issue. A driver’s blind spot mirror also arrives on the 2014 Sonata and is standard on the high-volume GLS Popular Equipment Package and all SE and Limited models, replacing the traditional side view mirror, and features an integrated convex spotter mirror aimed di-

rectly at the Sonata’s blind spot. All models now have a standard Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system, which optimally manages Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and the Motor-Driven electric Power Steering (MDPS). VSM works to control two effects. The first is when a driver accelerates or brakes on a split-mu surface (slippery on one side, dry on the other) and the vehicle tends to pull in one direction. VSM detects this condition and sends a signal to the MDPS to apply steering assist. VSM counters the pull and automatically provides counter-steering. VSM reacts the same way during sudden lane changes or fast cornering. The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) has also been updated for 2014 to a system that identifies the specific tire with low pressure. Standard 2014 Sonata safety technologies include: • Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) (New) • Electronic Stability Control
