Every year, residents select their favorites among the many small businesses and chains alike, selecting those that provide top quality and strong customer service. If you’re looking for someone to cook up that special lunch, someone to cater an event, a place to find that special outfit, or someone to help you buy a new car or fix an old one, this list is for you. original Frilly’s Seafood Bayou Kitchen has been serving up tasty meals with a Cajun flair. With its flavorful Creole sauces — the secret to this cuisine — the restaurant menu offers a treat for the taste buds, from its blackened catfish St. Charles to its grilled salmon St. Andrew. And no Cajun eatery would be complete without the requisite jambalaya or the Cajun combo of blackened catfish and crawfish etouffee. If you’ve never tried alligator meat, it’s worth a shot. Denton’s location of the renowned Outback Steakhouse has long been a popular place, with its parking lot packed on Friday and Saturday nights. It seems the secret is out for this restaurant where many go for a special night out with family and friends. This makes the 10th year that the Cupboard has captured top honors in the Best Veggie Fare and Health Food category. No other business in the Denton area can lay claim to the offerings available at the combination shop and cafe that keeps residents stocked with healthy fare. The cafe offers special treats for anyone — vegans looking for a wider selection or others seeking a tasty, healthy alternative to fast food. We became a convert with
the vegan chili years ago and still find time to pop by on a cold, rainy day to pick up a hot entree. During the spring and summer, with its outdoor pergola dining area, fresh salads and other lighter fare are made available on the ever-changing menu as the restaurant continues to experiment with different dishes to bring only the best to its customers. Try the veggie tacos with organic black beans and brown rice with Colby Jack cheese and pica de gallo, or the open-face marinated portobello mushroom with sweet bell pepper, shallot and balsamic vinegar saute topped with smoked mozzarella cheese melted on organic cracked wheat toast. BEST DENTON BAND
Even if it’s no surprise that singer-songwriter Sarah Jaffe earned the highest honor Best of Denton can give to a performer, it’s still well-deserved. Jaffe is riding a creative high that took off with last fall’s release of her debut album, Suburban Nature, surged with invitations to open on tour with Midlake, Norah Jones and Lou Barlow, and ended with a spot on all the right year-end lists — USA Today, Paste magazine, the Denton Record-Chronicle and Amazon.com. Jaffe saw her groundbreaking EP, Even Born Again, reissued on Kirtland Records. When it came time for Jaffe to take a main stage spot at 35 Conferette in March, she proved she’s not one to ride creative inertia. Instead, she reinterpreted the high fliers from her album and shared some of her upcoming electronic numbers. Runner-up: Karyna Cruz
Brave Combo www.brave.com/bo
Adam Reese has leadingman looks and the heart of stagehand. The combination probably ranked high for local audiences, who have seen him on stage with Music Theatre of Denton. If they haven’t seen him on stage, they’ve still benefited from Reese’s work managing the house at the Campus Theatre, or from his work keeping local productions very much on the promotional grapevine. In our memory, Reese will always be a standout as Spider, the sinister master of the Red Rat in Jekyll & Hyde. Music Theatre of Denton did the show ages ago, but we won’t soon forget Reese’s charisma and the dark sexiness he brought to the role. Runner-up: Justin Harmon Bragging rights: Maribeth Ayer

Denton’s own Brave Combo is the heart and soul of this community — from the funfilled chicken dance many of us learned years ago to the hot polka replete with a lively beat. The familiar tunes of this band have been a part of our landscape for more than three decades. We are proud of our favored band for its multiple Grammy wins and for its continued mission to keep polka alive and well across the country. You just can’t sit still when listening to their music. It’s impossible. Runner-up: The Wee-

BEST PLACE TO HEAR AND SEE LIVE BANDS Dan’s Silverleaf 103 Industrial St. 940-320-2000 www.danssilverleaf.com Get ready to take off your tie and kick off your shoes — relaxation and libation beckon. Dan’s Silverleaf regulars come in thirsty — for good music, good friends and freeflowing booze. Here’s you’ll find a mix of all ages and backgrounds who are drawn to Dan’s for its laid-back, let-loose-and-be-yourself atmosphere. Since opening in 2002 just
east of the downtown Square, Dan’s Silverleaf has set the pace for development of what is now a budding entertainment hub. The first to set roots, this comfortable, hometown bar set its sights on re-establishing itself as the place to hangout for Denton residents. Not only has it succeeded, but it has brought a lot of friends to put down roots nearby. It’s also the place to take in some of the best bands touring through Denton on almost any night of the week. Dan Mojica himself is the host-with-themost who makes each person feel like a personal friend — and many of his customers are. Dan’s Silverleaf is nothing fancy, but come as you are and you’ll be welcome. Runner-up: Hailey’s Club Bragging rights: Denton Arts & Jazz Festival

Cafe Du Luxe 3101 Unicorn Lake Blvd. 940-382-7070 www.cafeduluxe.com
We already knew Cafe Du Luxe was a great place to meet friends for conversation and a cup of coffee, a light meal or a glass of fine wine. But who would bet it would be the best place in Denton to view art or to take your significant other? Obviously, Denton voters did, because it topped the list of venues in town. Customers can’t miss the two-dimensional art displayed against a black background filling the north wall while they partake in something yummy. The show, which features North Texas artists, changes on a monthly basis, and patrons can meet the artist at an evening reception on the third Sunday of the month. Cafe Du

Chuck E. Cheese’s 341 S. Interstate 35E 940-591-6670 Always a favorite among the young set, this combination pizza eatery and game funhouse is the perfect place to take your kids, nieces and nephews, grandchildren or those you are baby-sitting (with parental permission, of course). Youngsters have a hard time deciding whether to take a bite out of their yummy meal or dart off to play a game. Fortunately, there’s time for both. Just plan to stick around a while. Downtown Square In Denton, we love our Square. During the day, it’s the place for an afternoon of music during the spring and summer as well as the spot to pick up an ice cream cone, eat from among a smorgasbord of lunch offerings, spend hours shopping, and sip a cup of java at any of several coffee shops. At night, a sense of transformation occurs and Denton’s Square becomes the happening hot spot for music, dinner and a late evening stroll. It comes alive with the white lights draped on the trees outside the Courthouse on the Square and the neon lights shining from the Campus Theatre marquee. The sounds of music waft from nearby hangouts, downstairs at the Abbey Inn, J&J’s Pizza or Andy’s Bar or from down the street at Dan’s Silverleaf, Hailey’s or Banter. Runner-up: Water Works Park
