02 Chamber 101: Message from the Board Chair
Denton Chamber of Commerce
03 24 10
This past year was an historic one for our Denton Chamber of Commerce as we celebrated our centennial. The strong leadership provided by Stan Morton, our immediate past board chair, helped navigate us through a tough economic year on the national level, while still allowing our Chamber to enjoy many fine moments. One of the highlights Dickenson was our annual Star Awards which was not only a celebration of the many community-minded “stars” in our city, but also an effective fundraiser for our maintenance fund operating budget. One of my favorite Chamber leaders, Priscilla Sanders, organized the Star Awards (again) with her usual flair. The evening of the event she remarked that San Francisco has it’s Golden Gate bridge and Paris has the Eifel Tower. Meanwhile, in Denton we have great people. It is what sets us apart! As we head into our Chamber’s 101st year of existence, those same stars exist and new ones are always getting ready to shine. My evolution to this board chair position is humbling to say the least and has been shaped in large part by Chamber of Commerce stalwarts such as Michele Barber, Tim Crouch, Phyllis Pittman, Marty Rivers, Sanders and Morton, just to
name a few. In fact, they are the ones who taught me “Chamber 101” - which is what we will go with as our theme in this new year. What is “Chamber 101”? To me, it begins by understanding what your Chamber of Commerce membership means to YOU as well as knowing what your membership means to the CHAMBER. You and your business, large or small, benefit from membership by taking advantage of the best business to business networking opportunities in Denton, provided by our staff, volunteer board and our Chamber Ambassadors. It is now, and has been for over 100 years, what you decide to make of it in terms of maximizing your involvement. We have a lot of room for NEW involvement and will be seeking some “fresh faces” to get involved. Businesses who support the Chamber with their membership help us to create the best possible business environment in Denton. Membership dues are the life-blood of a budget that supports an umbrella structure to administer services such as Economic Development, Convention and Visitors Bureau, Small Business Development and Leadership Denton. Speaking of Leadership Denton, last year’s class worked on
a project that will help us define many of the initiatives of our “Chamber 101” efforts. The group took a hard look at what our membership wants to see out of its involvement with the organization. And we plan on listening! Our President, Chuck Carpenter, likes to say, “you can’t always put what the Chamber does inside a box” and he is dead on. This year we will be providing some items for the box anyway. Things that will provide a more tangible benefit for our members. Watch for the new “Hot Deal” icon on the chamber web site or take advantage of special discounts available through the “Shop Denton Chamber First” key fob program. So, please get ready for “Chamber 101”. It is a course that will be taught in between our two great campuses in Denton. And plan on plenty of mentions on Mean Green athletics too. I’m not wasting the opportunity at that! Just like your business, we have few things to sell as well. Besides, that’s why I am joined the Chamber of Commerce in the first place. Hank Dickenson Chair of the Board 2010-2011 Chamber Year
Chamber: 2009-2010 major achievements report The Denton Chamber of Commerce celebrated its 100th Anniversary last March. Much emphasis was naturally placed on past accomplishments and key leaders. We made it a point, however, to equally address the importance of making the chamber a relevant and effective organization to promote and support the Denton business comMorton munity in the 21st Century. The most credible process for legitimate review and evaluation is the Accreditation program sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. This exercise requires an extensive internal and external assessment of the organization, comparing structure, program, services and initiatives to best practice models across the country, as identified by the U.S. Chamber. Before we could begin the formal appraisal, we had to prove that we complied with 52 minimum standards in eight different categories. From there, Jerry Mohelnitzky and Tommy Caruthers co-chaired the five month process of comparison and validation. Unique exhibits and response to essay questions allowed for additional credit, and, subsequently higher ratings, over and above the basic Accreditation. Sections on technology, communications, human resources, governance and program development queried the Denton Chamber team on the latest trends, dynamics and perspectives for representing the collective interests of the local business community. Each of these sections were headed by individual volunteers, based on their current or previous involvement in the chamber, and included: Michele Barber, Mark Burroughs, Paul Chandler, Sheri deWet, Eriq Neale and Marty Rivers. In August, the Denton Chamber earned its 35-Year Reaccreditation, with a three-star supplemental rating.
Participating chambers must conduct this process every five years to retain it certification; the Denton Chamber was originally accredited in 1975. There are currently only 284 out of nearly 7,000 local chambers in the entire nation that have conducted and retained their original Accreditation. The Denton Chamber is one of only 17 in the state of Texas to be Accredited. Chambers may earn up to five stars, and, we would obviously have preferred to have gained a higher ranking. Our board agreed, however, that simply subjecting our organization to a legitimate self-evaluation was more important than being driven by extra points and ratings. We established a new Executive Committee division this year, headed by Chuck Fremaux, to review, evaluate and coordinate all major membership events and projects, including the Business-to-Business EXPO, Denton ISD New Employees event, membership mixers, and luncheon meetings. This division piloted a an expanded variation of the Business-to-Business event, The Green Business Conference , jointly sponsored with the City of Denton and held at the Environmental Education, Science & Technology building on the UNT campus. Phyllis Pittman and the Marketing Committee initiated, reviewed and screened Requests-for-Proposals, which were originally sent to nine different professional publishing companies for a new chamber map and community resource magazine/relocation guide agreement. The Board approved a two-issue contract with Frisco-based Community Matters, Inc. The map will include a regional geographic context and be inter-active on the chamber web site. Speaking of web site, the board approved a new contract with ChamberMaster, to manage the membership database, in conjunction with a new web site designed to implement
specific services and benefits. Leads, referrals, and “Hot Deals” will be available and tracked per membership account, carrying the “Shop Denton Chamber First” philosophy to a whole new level. The Ambassadors Council, made up over 100 loyal volunteers, continues to be the face of the Denton Chamber at over 50 internal as well as public events. I want to thank Sheri deWet for initiating the original concept and heading the Membership Development Division. Terry Nobles and James Parker served as Co-Chairs of the Ambassadors Council. Colette Yetka headed the Air Force Team; Marti Kay Hill was captain of the Navy Team. Gina Atkinson lead the Army Team. Misty Links was in charge of the Marines. An average of 17 individual Ambassadors attended every new business opening. The Small Business Development Center, housed at the chamber office, in cooperation with North Central Texas College and the U.S. Small Business Administration, conducted 259 counseling sessions with clients during its 2008-09 program year, as well as coordinated a monthly series of breakfasts meetings featuring topics to address small business needs and issues. In June, Priscilla Sanders brought back the Star Awards Recognizing over 100 individuals in 17 different community service categories. Net proceeds replenished the chamber’s Building Improvement Fund by $11,000. The Government Relations Division, headed by Mark Burroughs, helped coordinate personal visits to targeted legislators to deliver joint position statements on behalf of the chamber, City of Denton, Denton ISD, North Central Texas College, Texas Woman’s University and the University of See ACHIEVEMENTS on Page5

Annual Awards A key component of any Denton Chamber annual membership meeting is the public recognition of dedicated individuals and presentation of awards. The Otis L. Fowler Award is the highest and most prestigious honor annually presented by the Denton Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Fowler was the first paid executive to serve the Denton Chamber of Commerce, a position he held for 30 years; he retired in 1959. According to the criteria originally established in 1960, the Otis L. Fowler Award is bestowed upon a deserving individual “who by regular engagement in (his or her) business, profession or calling ... (has) made a marked contribution to the progress and welfare of the community.” Membership in/or affiliation with the Denton Chamber of Commerce is not required. The 2009 Otis L. Fowler Award was presented to Mike Trimble, the Opinion Editor for the Denton RecordChronicle. Another formal recognition at the annual membership meeting is the Volunteer of the Year. Individuals are considered based on a genuine, personal effort to actively carry out specific responsibilities pertaining to the goals and objectives of one or more of the various standing committees and task forces, or those affiliate organizations which are directly or indirectly associated with the Denton Chamber of Commerce during any given Program Year. David Layton received the Volunteer of the Year Award for the 2008-09 Chamber Year. He is the Marketing Manager at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton. See AWARDS on PAGE 13

Leadership Denton Class #25 officially convened with 14 members in August. The class graduation project will be presented April 8 and focus on membership perception and retention. The 2009-2010 Leadership Denton Steering Committee was headed by Mary Garcia ’07. Program Co-Chairs were Pamela Barnes ’09, Cameron Cox ’08 and Lisa Miller ’07. They will graduate April 30 at the UNT Coliseum. The chamber’s Economic Development Partnership with the City of Denton is now in its seventh year. Select Medical completed construction on its 44-bed, 52,000 square foot rehabilitation and long-term acute care hospital and has begun operations at the site. Marty Rivers and Virgil Strange, the chamber’s appointees to the Joint Economic Development Partnership Board, are currently serving as Chair and Vice Chair respectively. We want to thank the City of Denton City Council and Public Utilities Board for their continued financial support of the partnership and confidence in the chamber as the external marketing arm. We are equally gratefully to the 80 chamber members who help fund the private marketing budget. We were flattered to have Ross Perot, Jr. as the speaker January 22 at the final Economic Development Investor Briefing of the current program year. Michele Barber headed the chamber’s Investor Relations Committee. The chamber’s Convention & Visitor Bureau (CVB) entered into a partnership with the Mayborn Graduate School of Journalism at the University of North Texas for production of the Denton Live magazine beginning January 2009. attraction publication remains 120,000 issues per year and is now accomplished completely within Denton, utilizing local writers, publisher, photography, and printing. The CVB held the fourth annual Planner Zone Trade Show in October. Developed to be a venue for exposing meeting and conference planners in the Denton area to the facilities and services available to the meetings industry in Denton, the show attracted over 40 exhibitors and 300 plus participants including members of the North Texas Society of Human Resource Managers. The Planner Zone is now a partnership between the CVB and the UNT School of Hospitality. Through 2009, the CVB assisted with 36 definite convention bookings for a total of 24,470 attendees. Additionally, the CVB has bid on and/or serviced over 35 conventions and meetings since last January. The Greater Denton Sports Commission (GDCS), assisted by the CVB Sports Marketing Manager, in partnership with the Texas Bicycle Racing Association, held a cycling event for Denton for the fourth consecutive year. The race was held in downtown Denton on Saturday, September 26 and at CH Collins Athletic Complex on Sunday, September 27. The event drew about 700 riders for the two days. The Greater Denton Sports Commission, assisted by the CVB Sports Marketing Manager, hosted a 5K Run and 1Mile Walk named “Run to the House” on March 21, 2009. The event hosted over 350 participants for the first year event. The CVB Sports Marketing Manager and the GDSC, helped host the Amateur Softball Association State Championship in Corinth and Denton on June 19–21. The event was bid on while at the ASA State Meeting in January 2009 and had over 400 participants along with fans, parents, and officials. Despite a questionable economy, the chamber membership base appears to have leveled off at approximately 850. We anticipate the tangible benefits associated with the new web site will help solidify this base again, as well as influence a small but steady net increase through the next program year. Please know that we are genuinely grateful to those of you who continue to loyally support the organization. I pledge my personal support of our new Board Chair, Hank Dickenson, and encourage your on-going involvement and participation.

Alphagraphics nets small business award Staff report
Not only is AlphaGraphics focused on quality, it also is focused on giving back to the community. The printing company was honored by the Denton Chamber of Commerce as the Small Business of the Year for 2009. Lynn and Joni Chatwin, who have been married 36 years, have owned the almost 11-year-old business for about eight of those years. The business is part of a franchise but each location is independently owned. Their company on Loop 288 provides design work, printing and copying for other businesses, but the Chatwins said they also have walk-in traffic such as contractors or college students. In addition, the company does booklet binding, blueprint work, lamination, banners and puts pictures on compact discs and DVDs to go along with its brochures or booklets. A year ago the company began offering a mailing service, Lynn Chatwin said. The Chatwins have received awards from AlphaGraphics’ corporate office. It is “nice for corporate to recognize you but they are supposed to recognize you,” Joni Chatwin said. But it means more to them that the community recognizes what they’re doing. Winning the chamber award is an honor since it is from their peers, Joni Chatwin said. The Chatwins’ philosophy is to “treat our employees like we want customers to be treated and they will in turn treat customers that way,” Lynn Chatwin said. Joni Chatwin said they retained

Awards
The Chamber’s Ambassadors Council is made up of over 100 dedicated volunteers who represent the chamber at special events for both the organization and community, as well as grand openings for new businesses. Divided into four teams, Ambassadors earn points for individual and group participation. The top point-earning team and individual Ambassador will be recognized at the annual membership meeting on March 25. Sue Johnson, representing Ray of Sunshine, was the top individual Ambassador last year. At the Denton Chamber membership luncheon in February, Lynn and Joni Chatwin, co-owners of AlphaGraphics, were presented the Small Business Person of the Year Award for 2009.
Volunteer of the Year The Volunteer of the Year Award honors the individual efforts of a Denton Chamber volunteer for a particular program year. The first award was inspired by the late James Wood, the former owner of Lake Dallas Flowers & Balloons. Prior to his untimely death in 1991, James helped organize and was a top-producing participant in the PACERS, the Denton Chamber’s unique and successful volunteer membership sales committee. The following are the recipients for the volunteer of the year award: 2008-09 2007-08 2006-07 2005-06 2004-05 2003-04 2002-03 2001-02 2000-01

New Web site offers and tracks referrals There have been several variations of chamber-sponsored Shop Denton First initiatives over the years, including a Leadership Denton class project and a couple of consumer behavior studies commissioned through the University of North Texas College of Business. The current Shop Denton Chamber First program is designed as a discount incentive to enable chamber members to increase their customer base and raise the profile of the local business community. Existing and potential customers are offered discounts when patronizing Denton Chamber businesses. Key FOBs imprinted with the Shop Denton Chamber First logo and Denton Chamber web address will be issued to participating merchants for distribution to customers. The key FOB can be used by the customer to receive exclusive discount offers or incentives at all participating Denton Chamber businesses. Merchants can promote their discount or incentive through a listing on the
Chamber Web site called Hot Deals. Merchants may offer more than one discount or incentive simultaneously. Approved in November, the current Shop Denton Chamber First promotion is directly linked to a new chamber web site that will better track referrals. The web site upgrade and key FOBs were made possible and supported by a group of chamber businesses and individuals called the Chair’s 100 Club: AlphaGraphics Axiom Commercial Company, Ltd. They also installed full-spectrum lighting in the shop so the colors are more accurate to how they will appear outside, he said. Part of their focus is to be environmentally friendly because they know that is part of Denton’s initiative as a community. They have a printer that is set up to be environmentally friendly. “Which means that everything in this machine is recyclable,” Lynn Chatwin said. They are Forest Stewardship Council certified, meaning their paper has a logo that certifies that it came from an environmentally friendly-managed forest.
