Wassail Fest returns to downtown Square By Megan Gray Staff Writer mgray@dentonrc.com
T
he Denton Holiday Lighting Festival will light up the downtown Square on Friday evening for the 25th time. The lighting festival kicks off with a sing-along and the lighting of the community Christmas tree at 5:30 p.m., organizers said. Music, dancing, arts and crafts, food and a visit from Santa continue the festivities until 9 p.m.
The Wassail Fest, a separate event that runs concurrently, will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on the downtown Square, offering the hot cider served by downtown merchants. Micah Pazoureck, co-chairwoman of the Denton Holiday Festival Association, said the festival began in1988 with just a few hundred people in attendance. The festival now draws an estimated 13,000 to 15,000 people from all over Denton County, who gather at the historic courthouse to enjoy what
Pazoureck calls “the official start of the holiday season.” Pazoureck attributes the growth of the event to good weather and a “wise decision” to move the festival from a Thursday night to a Friday night in 2011. “Since it was no longer a school night — or even a work night for some — this allowed people to come out and stay longer,” she said. “They could then really enjoy themselves. It’s just a familyfriendly way to kick off the holiday sea-
son.” One of the things she said many festivalgoers still don’t realize is that the DHFA is a nonprofit organization governed by a volunteer board of directors. “We run solely off donations and sponsorships to put this festival on,” Pazoureck said. “Donations are always appreciated to keep it going. … This really is an event put on for the community by the community.” See FESTIVAL on Page 9

nder the artistic direction of Eldar and Lilia Valieva, the annual production of the Festival Ballet of North Texas’ The Nutcracker will continue its tradition into a 26th holiday season. This year’s performances are slated for 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, and 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 15 at the Margo Jones Performance Hall on the Texas Woman’s University campus. Ticket prices range from $11 to $36 for the production which will feature two new principals — Alexandru Glusacov and Melissa Zoebisch. Born in Moldova, Glusacov trained at the Academy of Ballet of Republic of Moldova from 1992 to 1998. He earned a diploma from the International Ballet Competition in Constanta, Romania in 1997. Upon graduation, he joined the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet of Republic of Moldova where he became a soloist dancer. In 2003, Mr. Glusacov joined the Russian Classical Ballet. In 2004, Glusacov danced with the Russian State Ballet. With these companies, he toured extensively throughout Europe with soloists from the Bolshoi
Theatre. His repertoire includes soloist and principal roles in ballets like Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty and many others, as well as contemporary performances. Currently, Glusacov is a freelance dancer guesting throughout the country and teaches as well. Melissa Zoebisch grew up in Mexico and studied at the Chamber Ballet of Jalisco. She was awarded a scholarship to attend for a year at the Kirov Academy of Ballet in Mme. Sizova’s class, and returned to Mexico to graduate in 2004. Throughout her school years, she participated in many workshops around the world in Cuba, Canada, Austria, Spain, and the United States. In 2005, Zoebisch joined the National Dance Company, where she obtained soloist roles in her first year in ballets including Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty and Carmen. Highland Village: Santa Day The annual Santa Day will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 14 with the help of the Highland Village Firefighter’s Association. Santa will make a visit to the Highland Village Fire Department so children can make their requests for Christmas. Activities range from a fire engine bounce house and face painting to having pictures with Santa. Children and adults are encouraged to attend. The fire department is accepting new, unwrapped toys through Dec. 14. Donations will benefit a local charity. Lake Dallas: Holiday lighting The 2013 lighting of the Lake Dallas Christmas tree is slated for Saturday. Attendees can enjoy an evening full of free holiday entertainment beginning at 5 p.m. at the Lake Dallas City Hall. There will be plenty of live music, crafts, refreshments and the annual visit from Santa Clause. Lewisville: Holiday stroll The annual Old Town Holiday Stroll will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday in Old Town Lewisville, featuring a wide range of free family events. After the parade, Santa Claus will meet with children for photos and to hear their Christmas requests. At 5:15 p.m., Mayor Dean Ueckert and Mrs. Claus will join forces for the “Lewisville Lights!” Old Town Christmas Tree Lighting, flipping the switch to turn on the city’s Christmas tree and tens of thousands of lights along Main and Church streets, on Lewisville City Hall and on MCL Grand. Little Elm: Santa around town The Little Elm Fire Department will be teaming up with Santa again this year for the Santa Around Town Program beginning on Dec. 9. Volunteers for the Denton State Supported Living Center will partner with KRLD-AM (1080) this week for the annual Christmas is for Caring fundraiser. This is the 35th year that the center’s Volunteer Services Council and the crew at the Dallas radio station partner to help raise money for things that the state of Texas doesn’t pay for, including Christmas gifts for the residents and other needs. The phone bank will be open all this week, and all contributions are tax-deductible and go straight to the council. Susan Dean, spokeswoman for the council, said this year the goal is to raise $150,000 to help pay for a walkway that connects the residences to both pavilions on campus. About half of the 400 residents use wheelchairs and currently cannot make full use of the center’s grounds, which are located in southern Denton on State School Road. “We have all kinds of events in those pavilions — picnics and music,� Dean said. Not only would the walkway allow residents in wheelchairs to attend those events, but it would also be available for use by residents who enjoy riding bicycles, she said. Each year, the council raises money for a major improvement that wouldn’t be funded by the state. Last year, the council bought two wheelchair-accessible vans so that residents could take trips. The Christmas is for Caring season will conclude with the center’s traditional Christmas party Dec. 19. Residents will open their gifts and those who are able will also come together for a dance party, Dean said. Janie McLeod, now the community events coordinator for the city of Denton, said she was involved with the festival when it first began while she was working with the Convention and Visitors Bureau. “This event has so many positive impacts on the community — it is a fun, family-friendly
event with a variety of great entertainment; is good for the downtown businesses and brings everyone together regardless of ages,� she said. McLeod said that the festival is a tradition that she shared with her family and now shares with her grandchildren. She toured extensively throughout the Europe with stars of Bolshoi and Kirov ballets. In addition to teaching for Jennifer Austin at Arts in Motion in Kingston, Tenn., Lilia Valieva performed duties as the Assistant Dance Director and Ballet Mistress at the Cumberland County Playhouse from 1998 to 2011. Lilia Valieva, who moved to Denton in August 2011 to assume the position of Co-Director of Festival Ballet of North Central Texas, also serves as ballet mistress of Denton Ballet Academy.

Nativity collection celebrates holiday beauty for couple By Pam Rainey
skirts. The collection outgrew their home and quickly became items to be dusted as well as adored. Klein’s husband Monroe is retired, but won’t let a speck of dust rest under his feet. In 1999, Monroe Klein presented an idea to his wife that delighted her. He proposed that he put his University of North Texas industrial technology degree to work by building a room onto their farm to house her collection. That way, he said, she would be able to share the collection with the public year round. She was thrilled to watch him design a building — an 18-by-30-foot gallery — that they named Bethlehem of Denton County. There, all the nativities could be properly displayed and stored year-round. Monroe didn’t just build a building. He made something special. He added doors of leaded glass and hung with stained glass. He put sun catchers in each panel of the garden door. The building is heated and cooled for enjoyment in all seasons and for the protection of the collection. Soon the nativities that had been packed away came out for display. “I inherited my mother’s collection of over 300 nativities,” Judy Klein said. “So one corner of the room is ‘Mimi’s Corner,’ because it is one of my favorite areas of the gallery.” A large tree stands before the window, by the main door, and 800 nativity ornaments are displayed. Two smaller trees are themed by color. One tree is decorated only with gold and brass ornaments and covered with fine golden angel hair shimmering in the lights. It is topped with a golden crown for the King of Kings. “The golden color represents the majesty of the Lord.” Klein said.

At Christmas time, we often see the talents of artisans displayed. Sometimes it is in beautifully crafted stockings that go to the hospitals, all made by the loving hands of grandmothers to welcome new babies during the holidays. Or crocheted caps and gloves to warm children who need clothing. I recently received a beautiful Santa Claus designed and handmade by Joyce Fuller, who lives north of Denton. Beautifully handcrafted ornaments from all over the world adorn Mr. Claus’ attire and the stocking thrown over his shoulder. I cherish him, and he holds a place of pride in my living room year round. Judy Klein of Denton County began collecting creches and manger scenes more than 35 years ago. She displayed many of them in every room of her and her husband’s farm home, also just north of Denton. Many were packed away as her collection grew. “When friends and family learned of my collection, I received manger scenes for every occasion,” Klein said. She made an inventory of every nativity so she could keep up with them before deciding which to display and which to pack away. They were made all over the world — Russia, Alaska, Hawaii, Austria, El Salvador, Colombia, Switzerland, Germany and elsewhere. They come in different forms: lighted, musical, turning, talking, huggable, serious, whimsical and in the form of a puzzle. Some sit there and do nothing. Some have kings and shepherds, and some have angels. There are bears and mice. There are snowmen. Some are multipurpose, made as candles, mugs, plates, spoons, stockings and tree

Holiday events are plentiful in North Texas Train exhibit brings holiday cheer, aid to local non-profit agency An “Everything Trains Christmas” exhibit presented by the Wood House of Denton is back for the third year to benefit Denton County Friends of the Family. Steve Davis, owner of the Wood House, built the train exhibit in a special display area of his unfinished furniture store, located at 516 N. Locust St. Visitors of all ages are invited to visit the business to see the elaborate train exhibit and donate canned food items for Denton County Friends of the Family. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and the display will be available for viewing through Dec. 31. The business is closed on Christmas Day. The display features five trains rolling across tracks that travel past replicas of national landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, and there are 200 holiday-trimmed buildings aglow with neon signs and electrical lights. Holiday programs on tap at local museums The Denton County Office of History and Culture has announced holiday programs including a Santa collection on display at Denton’s Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum and seasonal music at both the Bayless-Selby House Museum and African American Museum. Kay Copeland’s Santa Collection, installed by Darien Orr, will be on display during the holiday season, according to a press release from the county. The collection had its start over 50 years ago and has grown through the years with purchases from Christmas stores, antique shops,
church and school bazaars and other sources. Also currently on view at the museum is an exhibit titled “Big Wheels Turnin’: The Evolution of Transportation in Denton County.” Holiday music will be offered at the African American Museum and the Bayless-Selby House Museum during the Denton Holiday Lighting Festival from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday. The American Legion Senior Center Choir will be featured from 6 to 7:50 p.m. at the African American Museum. Scheduled performances at the Bayless-Selby House are: 5:30 to 5:50 p.m., First Denton Praise & Worship Team; 6 to 6:20 p.m., Larry’s Angels; 6:30 to 6:50 p.m., Sing Texas!; 7 to 7:20 p.m., Bonduris Music Student Bands; and 7:30 to 7:50 p.m., Sing Texas! Students from the Sing Texas! troupe will perform popular holiday songs in several rooms of the Bayless-Selby House Museum as guests tour the facility. The group is made up of 24 singers who live in Denton County. The Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum is located at 110 W. Hickory St., and the BaylessSelby House and African American museums are located in the Historical Park of Denton County at 317 W. Mulberry St.
Sunset hike and ‘Wild Christmas’ program planned at state park PILOT POINT - A sunset hike and a holidaythemed program will highlight activities at the Johnson Branch Unit of Ray Roberts Lake State Park this weekend. The hike will begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Pavilion 1 and will cover half a mile along a concrete trail. Participants are advised to wear sturdy shoes and bring water and a flashlight. Staff members will host a program titled “Dreaming of a Wild Christmas” from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday in the park amphitheater. Participants will learn about old-fashioned campfire cooking techniques and sample a dessert prepared in a Dutch oven. There also will be hot chocolate and a traditional Christmas craft. Keep Aubrey Beautiful to present tree lighting Dec. 5 AUBREY— Members of Keep Aubrey Beautiful will present the annual Hometown Tree Lighting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at the festival grounds located at 301 S. Main St. Santa will arrive on a fire truck to visit with the children. Free photos with Santa will be provided by Jackie’s Hardware. Attendees are asked to bring an unwrapped toy to donate for Toys for Tots. Toy collection will be available in the tin barn with Santa. Members of Aubrey Girl Scout Troop 8667 and the Aubrey 380 Area Chamber of Commerce will present free hot cocoa. HOPE food bank will provide a concession stand and accept food donations.

Company starts local holiday season with annual ballet, now in 15th year EDITOR’S NOTE: Even though the chance to see the annual “A Gift for Emma� has already passed, we’d be remiss not to include a story in the annual Christmas in Denton County edition.

Lisa Racina admits that Denton City Contemporary Ballet is starting the holidays off a little early. The company’s annual holiday fantasia in dance, A Gift for Emma, officially kicked off the season in November. “It’s the only time we can get the space,� Racina said in an interview before the performances. The space is the performing arts center at Krum High School, an auditorium that’s inspired a growing fondness among Denton performing arts companies. Even though the company tells its story before Thanksgiving, Racina said her dancers are ready. With this year being the 15th performance of the annual dance, Racina’s students at Denton Dance Conservatory have grown up with the show. Performances were held during the weekend of Nov. 22-24. “This year, all of my soloists knew the choreography,� Racina said. “Every single soloist knew it. First of all, a lot of them have been watching the video since they were little. And the company could finally afford some assistants to teach the choreography to the new dancers.� Emma is a simple story, really. A young street urchin, Emma, sneaks into a dance studio near Christmastime to get warm. The lessons end, the dance teachers leave and lock up. Emma — like Clara before her in The Nutcracker — curls up under the Christmas tree and falls asleep in the studio. She goes on a journey in her dream and receives a gift. During her dream, she meets “swinging elves,� toys that come to life and Poseidon and the Arctic Wind. She meets creatures on land (dancing flowers and spiders) and under the sea (jellyfish and seahorses). Racina casts children from her studio and other studios in town, but the principal and solo roles are performed by

members of the contemporary ballet and guest artists. “We’ve added some parts this year, like spiders who do an elaborate dance with a web,� Racina said. “And this year, we also created seaweed for the ocean scenes.� Emma has long shown Racina’s gift for integrating the things that catch her attention outside of the studio into the dance. Under the sea, scallops zip onto the stage on skateboards, and in a dark corner, dancers sling and shoot on black bands to weave spider webs. Umbrellas festooned with lights and scarf-like tendrils become jellyfish. Emma has also engaged the dancers’ imaginations. With props like these, the dancers have convincingly embodied creatures who float and climb. After 14 years, the company has had to refresh some of its standards, too. A crafty company board member is building a new Christmas tree that expands to 16 feet tall. Like most North Texas dance companies, Denton City Contemporary Ballet includes professional guests in the piece. Hip-hop dancer Chris Koehl returns to dazzle as the robot doll. Koehl is a former faculty member from Denton Dance Conservatory and was a contestant on season eight of TV’s So You Think You Can Dance. “Last year, he got mobbed by all these girls during intermission,� Racina said. Koehl signed autographs for the audience during intermission and the fans were enthusiastic. Koehl will sign autographs again this year. He’s appeared on the popular television series Glee and also appeared in Jermaine Jackson’s music video for “Blame It on the Boogie.� It’d be sacrilege to stage a holiday ballet without a pas de deux, and Racina would hardly betray her years of devotion to classical ballet and skip it. Kiev Ballet School alumna Iuliia Ilina dances the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy with her cavalier, a role danced by Dallas Blagg, a member of the Tulsa Ballet. The pair dances the pas de deux in the traditional Russian style. Brandon McGee returns to the ballet, this year performing the role of Poseidon. LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877.
