Blast from the past From the Past...

By Jason Priest

For the Denton Record-Chronicle

Whether searching for taffy or nostalgic knick-knacks, Atomic Candy fills Dentonite’s sweet cravings. Nestled between More Fun Comics and Chestnut Tree at the corner of West Hickory and Locust, you might find storeowner Tim Loyd enjoying his favorite candies; Cowtales or Napoleon Sours. The new candy shop on the Square opened in December of last year. Tim Loyd, owner of Atomic, is not the average candy man. A former Mercedes mechanic of 20 years with plans to open his own repair shop, Loyd said he had always wanted to own his own company and would eventually get to do something. Little did he know his life would change after making a joke to a friend who owned a popcorn shop. “I told him I had money saved up and I jokingly asked him if he would sell me his popcorn business. He wouldn’t sell me his shop but he would teach me the trade,” Loyd said. With his friend’s mentorship and the saved money, Mom and Popcorn came to life in downtown McKinney. Machines were bought, the process was learned and Loyd started producing gourmet popcorn in-store. He decided to add nostalgic candy brands because he felt it a better fit. He has since moved the shop to the Denton Square. Atomic is creating good foot traffic for the downtown square and keeping things busy, said Julie Glover, Economic Development Program Administrator for Denton. She said he is a seasoned store owner and is doing very well at staying on top of it. “It appeals to a lot of the market. It’s aimed at high school and college that think it’s cool and the baby boomers who remember the candies from childhood,” said Glover. “It has a different target audience than usual.” His new candy shop is a vintage blast from the sweet tooth past featuring 192 candy dispensers and bins full of bulk candy, four refrigerators stocked with 160 different sodas including 35 different bottles of root beer, displays filled with a variety of wrapped candy as well as shelves piled with assorted trinkets and gag gifts. Loyd puts in a lot of work researching and sampling candies before he sells them to

the public. Loyd said he used to just drive through Denton and never really stopped to look around until it was suggested by a friend when he was hunting a location for his future business. “Denton is a gold mine,” said Loyd about his new found home. “It’s more than just a college town, it’s a melting pot. I live here … all my money is in Denton.” Loyd and Atomic Candy had a warm welcome from other businesses on the Square despite the long presence of The Candy Store. Loyd said he respects their business and tries to avoid stepping on any toes by trying to stay away from chocolates. Loyd has been investing a lot of time into his new shop. He works Monday through Saturday from open until close and is still there after hours, going over product orders, stocking inventory or working on a new display. His girlfriend has been helping when available and recently started full time. Although not everyone has a sweet tooth, almost everyone can relate to certain candies from their childhood. Loyd enjoys the vocal customers who are excited about seeing candy from their hometown or from when they were a kid and watching them leave with a smile. “Candy covers all age groups,” said Loyd. “It triggers a part in the brain that remembers when life was simple.” “I love all the choices that they have here. It’s a good price and I can try a little bit of everything,” said sophomore Matt Hackler as he perused the pleasure dispensing bins that lined the wall. As he surveyed the assortments of candy dispensers, he filled his bag with a variety of gummy, sour, sweet and chocolate treats. “This place is perfect when I get my fat kid candy cravings,” said Hackler. Loyd said he enjoys the retro nostalgic styling and is a self-proclaimed sucker for auctions, garage sales and Craigslist. He has an eye for things that will make people stop and look. Some of the standouts are the old card catalog, mail sorter, chicken coop and hardware store nail bin he stripped and painted to hold a variety of sweet water taffy. “[The retro styling] is obviously working for him,” said Glover. “I think he really used unusual items in a creative way.”

Former Dallas Cowboy gives back to communities

By Allison Miller

For the Denton Record-Chronicle

Standing six feet tall in his worn cowboy boots, Walt Garrison, former Dallas Cowboy and rodeo star, welcomes friends and family into his log cabin with a tip of his hat and a deep, southern “howdy.” With a nickname like “The Cowboy’s Cowboy,” his southern twang and fitted jeans with a permanent indentation of a Copenhagen ring in the back pocket are no surprise. Take a walk to his back room where four walls guard his woodworking shop or step outside of the log cabin and wander through the 32 acres of land surrounding the Argyle home. About 10 roping steer and eight horses — two of which belong to his grandsons — wander about. An arena for his practice sits in front of the gravel drive lined with a few smokers and grills for his cookouts and his horse trailers. While some celebrities shield their homes from others with gates and security systems, Garrison has found a practical use for his. The arena in Garrison’s front yard has been home to the Bill Robinson

Memorial Rodeo for more than 20 years. The first year, the rodeo took place at Smith Brothers in Denton. There was one scholarship of about $200 awarded. “It started out as just a roping to remember Bill,” Garrison said. “Everything was donated. We didn’t have any expenses.” The following year, the rodeo was held at an arena across the road from Garrison’s home. By the third year, the building of his home was complete and it was the new home of the rodeo. Many people donated their time and concessions and the money raised was put toward the 11 Bill Robinson Memorial Scholarships of which two are academic and nine are athletic. Coors has donated 40 to 50 cases of beer each year since the beginning of the rodeo. “It was a pleasure to donate to such a great cause,” said Coors marketing manager Marvin Branch. “[Garrison] is such a nice individual. Garrison standing, it was just the right thing to do.” Garrison also has a softer, more artistic side. Walking into his home, eyes are immediately drawn to the large, southern-style chandelier hanging from the tall ceiling above the living room coffee table. Each surrounding wall is made of beautifully crafted logs; some with detailed carvings created by Garrison. Aside from the enormous collection of knives sitting on the table in the entryway, he has a few stored out in his shop. But the knives are not a demonstration of his southern upbringing. They are used to whittle little statues, toys, trinkets and flowers from chunks of wood. Four large bookshelves can be found around the house cluttered with his creations as well as a shop full of complete and in-the-works pieces: some painted, some burned and some untouched. His comedy is just another one of his hidden treats, every conversation riddled with puns. Many of the little wooden creations are

a symbol of the humor Garrison finds in life. Garrison even uses his downtime dur-

ing his retirement to contribute. When he is not out roping or going to physical therapy for his torn rotator cuff, he can be found whittling his creations into masterpieces. He does not sell them for a profit, but he does use them for charitable purposes, he said, including many things that he sends to Oklahoma State University for their silent and live auctions. Garrison said the last whittling he sent sold for $3,900. OSU Vice President Gary Clark spoke highly of Garrison. Clark worked with the football team during his freshman year at OSU, Garrison’s senior year. “I was in awe of him right off the bat,”

he said. Clark always enjoyed Garrison’s “self deprecating humor.” Now the vice president of university relations and an alumnus of OSU, Clark has had the opportunity to work with Garrison and his charitable contributions. “As the old saying goes, if you ever have to be stuck in a fox hole with someone, he’s the one you want to be with,” he said. “He’s somebody that’s always going to do more than his share. He is a genuine, exceptional guy.” It is an honor to do things for OSU, Garrison says, because everything he has is because of his time there. Fame and fortune have changed his life and, from that, he has affected the lives of many.

A-train key part of UNT student’s day

By Katie Engstrom

For the Denton Record-Chronicle

It’s 7 a.m. Monday. Everyone’s favorite time of the week. Ara Andonian wakes up to the sound of a beeping digital fire alarm. Although not a morning person, he drags himself out of bed and dresses in the clothes he laid out the night before. He skips breakfast at home, hoping to have time to grab a bagel at school for a dollar. He jumps in his car and heads to Hebron Station, and hops aboard the 8:03 a.m. A-train to make it to his 9 a.m. class. He settles in among dozens of fellow passengers on the fairly antiquated, but still functional, Budd Rail Diesel Car that was built sometime between 1949 and 1962. This is not Grand Central Station, and there is no morning bustle like that of the New York subway where morning passengers clamber over one another like a plague of locusts. Andonian is a typical North Texas native. He grew up in Carrollton, and now

attends college at the University of North Texas in Denton. The junior, who is a Radio, Television and Film major, has attended UNT since fall 2011. He gets up in the morning and gets ready for school, just like most of more than 33,000 of his peers. He has found a more economical way to get to class. The 27-mile distance between his front door in Carrollton and the UNT campus creates a veritable nightmare for anyone who’s ever traversed Interstate 35E. A trip that should take about 20 to 30 minutes can take anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour or more, Andonian said. His solution: the A-train, which opened on June 20, 2011, and allows passengers to travel from its DART Trinity Mills station in Carrollton to the Downtown Denton Transit Center, running along I35E. The train was determined by the Denton County Transportation Authority to be the most cost-friendly and efficient solution to Denton county’s population growth concerns. Andonian says it only See A-TRAIN on Page 20

A-train takes him about 35 minutes each way. Stemming from a formal Alternatives Analysis study conducted in 2004-2005, plans to break ground on the train’s six stations commenced in May of 2005. According to the U.S. Census Bureau report in 2010, Denton County’s population was 662,614, a 53 percent increase from 2000. By comparison, Texas’ population increased 20.6 percent in that 10 year period. Dee Leggett, vice president of communications and planning for DCTA, said that the anticipated population growth facing Denton County was a significant factor in their decision to build the train. Andonian says that although he has the option of driving his car to school, he instead chooses the train due to the rising cost of gas. “Even though driving…would free me of planning my day around bus and train schedules, gas can easily run up to $10 to $14 per day depending on its price,” he says. “Not to mention the cost and hassle of parking (at UNT).” A student pass for one semester on the

June 24, 2012

A-train is $175, “which is a really great deal,” he says. Leggett says that along with population concerns, pollution, traffic and access to health care facilities were also factors in DCTA’s decision to build the train. In addition, she says, the planned expansion of I-35E helped spur its implementation. While the DCTA looks to expand the Atrain, Leggett says that it will have to find funding partners before going beyond current cities. For now, she says that the DCTA’s goals are to focus on current investments like A-train and bus services in Denton, Lewisville and Highland Village. In 2011, the American Public Transportation Association determined that an average of 1,500 people ride the A-Train on an average weekday. Andonian says he’s not really surprised that more people haven’t done the math on the savings the A-train could bring them. “People generally don’t look into other things unless someone else they know directly tells them about it,” he says, also noting that since the train only runs in the mornings and evenings, it might not be convenient for everyone. DCTA plans to add mid-day rail service

in August and just debuted its new Stadler GTW vehicles on the rail last week. At the end of a long day at school, Andonian finally arrives at the Hebron Station between 5:30 and 6 p.m. He walks in the front door of his house 20 minutes later, and slings his backpack

down like a railroad worker from the chain gang throwing down his gear. And although he sets to laying out his clothes so he can do it all over again the next day, he has the satisfaction of knowing that the pains he takes for public transportation have made his wallet just a little bit fatter, and the earth just a tiny bit greener.

Students find home away from home By Julia Tsai For the Denton Record-Chronicle

Students scurry to class or linger with friends past a trophy case near their dorm’s entrance. Golden eagles, winged humans and genie lamps stand atop miniature towers erected in tribute to the winners’ achievements. They’re a familiar sight to the students. Likewise, the attention they receive in the press is no surprise. They’ve reached finals and semifinals in nationwide competitions such as the Siemens-Westinghouse Science and Technology Competition. The University of North Texas’s Green Light to Greatness billboards along Interstate 35-E attest to their fame, displaying the faces of several Barry M. Goldwater scholars. One student beat contestants from Columbia, Stanford and Vanderbilt universities on Jeopardy!’s College Championship this year. In UNT, they’re known as TAMSters, or just TAMS students – short for the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science. In this two-year program, high-achieving

Texas students forgo their last two years of high school to take college courses and engage in research. Their academic and competition successes come at personal expense. They must leave behind family, friends and classmates two years earlier than most high school graduates and live in McConnell Hall, or the TAMS dorm, on the UNT campus. Many have to learn to cope with failure or study hard for the first time in their lives. But they aren’t alone. Together, the TAMS students endure hardships and help each other survive – and have fun – while in the program. Sometimes they do prefer to be at home because they miss Mom’s cooking and their friends, said Dr. Patrick Turnock, the TAMS academic psychologist. Once a month, the dorm would close on a weekend. Residents get the chance to return home, although they can also do so on any weekend, after filling out paperwork. A few from from El Paso and Odessa would stay with the host family of

a roommate or friend. Being so young and smart, they do face some college jesting. TAMS students have drawn fire from fellow school mates on the UNT Meme Facebook page. In comments and in memes – pictures accompanied by a slogan – they’ve been called annoying, nerds, Asian, anti-social. One February post escalated into an online war, in which the students, with some

help from their college peers, fought to defend themselves from disparaging remarks. TAMS students also retaliated with its own meme page as a parody of the UNT version. “I think it’s like teasing your little brother or sister,” Turnock said. Ironically, most of the Facebook users See TAMS on Page 25

TAMS who click the Like button of the so-called anti-TAMS memes are from TAMS students, said Anne Base, a TAMS junior. No need to get serious when they’re just jokes. Like normal high school students, they get to enjoy prom, club activities and volunteering. They can perform in musicals in Academy Players, write articles for ION TAMS newspaper and build up community service hours through HOPE – Helping Other People Everywhere. “It’s more fun here than back in high school,” senior Janani Sundaresan said. “I don’t have to ask my parents to drive me to clubs and events.” In what used to be the dorm’s cafeteria, which still retains the name ‘Mac Cafe,’ students lounge, chat, snack, study, play and even sleep. Members of a robotics team were found sleeping on the floor one morning, their robot half finished. One guy dozed off with a wrench in his hand. On a normal day, a few students sit at their own table and stare at their laptops, their earbuds plugged in. Two occupy a couch and discuss a paper together.

When it is not quiet, some guys place a stereo on the floor, turn on the hip hop music and start breakdancing. Close by, two challengers engage in a fencing duel, each wielding a several-feet-long PVC pipe with both hands. Every forward thrust elicits a cracking noise that reverberates throughout the room. One of the fighters pauses and steadies his opponent’s weapon: “Whoa, be careful not to break it.” The pipes, after all, were among a collection of materials given to them and their teammates to build a robot for a competition. Hall Director Candice Graning can be found at the front desk, where students often meet with each other and hang out with the building’s staff. Out of three dorms she has worked in so far, McConnell Hall is the best. “I couldn’t ask for a better job,” she said, after noting how the residents take care of the building and of each other. She keeps in contact with them. Although they part ways after graduation from TAMS, the connection remains. Alumni keep in contact and plan a 20th class reunion in July.

Students work on robotics as part of their course work in the Texas Academy of Math and Sciences program for gifted students at UNT.

Student ministry makes mark on campus By Julia Tsai For the Denton Record-Chronicle

The night air buzzes with the plucking of electric and acoustic guitars, the booming of drums and the singing of worship lyrics: “Yahweh, Yahweh, we love to sing your name, oh Lord!” The human chest vibrates with the cadence. Bodies sway, eyes close, arms rise and heads tilt upward. A young man shouldering a blue backpack joins the crowd and begins nodding his head to the beat. Others walk past and wonder at the rare sight, an outdoor event hosted by the Baptist Student Ministry at the University of North Texas. Before it began, the worship leaders summed up the reason for the event with a prayer: May God’s name be made famous in this campus. The BSM usually holds its Thursday worship services in its modest, one-story, low-roof brick building directly across from the University Union. Sometimes it features a guest speaker. This particular early-April night concludes one of ministry’s many major out-

reaches during the school year. In 72 Hours of Prayer, a tent is set up in the exact spot where the concert later plays. Small sheets of paper dangle from a few clotheslines. On each are written names and prayer requests, taken from a plastic jar labeled “Need a Prayer?” A couple more posters repeat the call. One girl notices a sign and approaches the table. “I’m pressed for time, but I really need this,” the girl says, her voice shaking, eyes watering, hand holding a phone to her ear. Not secluded to its Christian niche, the BSM welcomes anyone of any faith, philosophy and nationality into the Baptist Student Center. Members and visitors bond through various activities and food. And the ministry expands beyond the building’s walls. In the hour leading up to the outdoor worship, plastic-gloved hands dumped cigarette butts, paper and plastic bits and stray foam peanuts into trash bags. Ungloved hands sported cardboard

Ministry always being watched. They’re supposed to be light in the world. They shine in her life as well. Fellow BSM friends hang out in the dorm room she recently moved into, watching “Fantastic Mr. Fox” on a 19-inch TV. Several of them helped haul up Turner’s belongings to the third floor, after she sprained her ankle. On her desk sits a laptop, on which she edited clips of 72 Hours of Prayer and of BSM member’s testimonies as part of the video ministry. Turner found out about the BSM through its First Flight Week event in late-August. There she met her mentor Amanda Ratheal, a UNT alumna and one of two BSM campus missionaries, whose jobs are to connect with students and share their faith. Ratheal has also fostered relationships with other students. She invited an international student from Hong Kong, to stay in her home in Amarillo for the winter break. No matter the charitable deed, she guards against boasting herself. “I’m a Christian because I follow Christ, not because I do good things,” she said. She still confesses her downfalls and failures to fellow believers and to college students. Being a leader means being willing to share both good and bad experiences. BSM Director Stephanie Gates said Christians do fail, constantly. Because of flaws like selfishness, pride and anger,

The Baptist Student Ministry has other ways to connect with students with food. Local church members bring in meat and vegetable lasagnas, salad and garlic bread for a free lunch Wednesdays, they need Jesus to restore their relationship with God. When someone asks why Christians don’t do what they preach, she believes that’s a time to apologize and explain who Jesus is and why they need Him every day. Like Ratheal, fellow campus missionary Randy McSwain eats out with students, mostly international students who aren’t of the Christian faith. He said he can recognize at least 115 of them but not all their names, so he sometimes cheats by checking Facebook or just asks them again. He said he loves each person. Once, an international student called him at midnight because her friend was drunk and asked him to pick them up. McSwain did so. “You never know when that one moment, they will get to know Jesus.” And the ministry has other ways to See MINISTRY on Page 32

Ministry connect with students with food. Local church members bring in meat and vegetable lasagnas, salad and garlic bread for a Wednesday free lunch. They cater chili – with and without beans, white rice, shredded cheese, sour cream, Fritos, fudge brownies and vanilla ice cream for a Friday dinner during what’s called WorldLife. It invites international students to conclude their school week with food, chats and Bible study with BSM regulars. A blend of accents fills the air: Chinese, Nigerian, Indian, French, Georgian, Pakistani, Korean, Brazilian, Texan. One Wednesday afternoon, standing under the sun in the long line that snaked out of the BSM’s front doors was worth the wait. Donna Lumpkins served the shredded lettuce and cheese, standing behind a pan of the remaining taco meat. She and her congregation of First Baptist Church of Argyle catered on the UNT campus for the first time this April. She laments that going to church isn’t on the top priority of many students. According to the Baptist General

Convention of Texas website, 70 percent of high school graduates stop attending church. Lumpkins’ pastor, Brad Elsom, takes a short break from cleaning and packing up. He smiles at what the church has done for the students. “We wanna let ‘em know God loves ‘em.” On a normal day, refuge-seekers study, surf the Internet, take naps, play pingpong and chess, give each other an occasional piggyback ride, refresh themselves with drinks, pray together, and talk about life and Jesus. They reminisce on kayaking in Manitoba on a high school trip and pulling three all-nighters in a row for a school project. One remembered walking around school with a makeshift dragon tattoo because some eleventh grade classmates wanted to play Connect the Dots on her freckled arm. The Baptist Student Center also serves as a rest stop for bus drivers who shuttle UNT students and personnel across campus all day. The BSM didn’t always have a building.

Two volunteers meditate beside the 72 Hours of Prayer tent. Denton Baptist students first gathered in a cornfield since 1890 before they moved into homes that served as student centers. More than half a century later, the Baptist General Convention of Texas, which represents at least 5,000 Baptist churches, built and still owns the BSM center that

now stands. The building will give way to a new structure once the funds have been raised. It will continue fostering believers and welcoming non-believers through its Wednesday free lunches, Thursday worship and Bible study, and Friday WorldLife.

The history keeper

Krum resident works to save past for next generations By Michael Hutchins For the Denton Record-Chronicle

KRUM — The sound of footsteps clatter through the old building that once served as Krum’s only bank, years after it gave up that life. The brass teller cages, antique wooden signs, and bank vault all remain, but have been given a new purpose. The building now serves as the home of the Krum Heritage Museum. Today, instead of being visited by a crowd of adults eager to make deposits and withdrawals, a group of excited third graders have come to get a taste of Krum’s 125year past. The children spread out across the building like kids in a candy store rather than a museum, eager to see the old photos on the walls, the flat-screen television hanging nearby that shows movies about the city’s past, a scale model of the town circa 1940, the crank record player, and the box baby grand piano. The children avoid the vintage, sawdust-stuffed dolls that sleep in a crib that had been passed down for generations because of the

strange expressions and half-closed glass eyes. Della Davis, the 70-year-old mind behind the Krum Heritage Museum, feels a tug on her sleeve as she takes a moment to rest her bones at the worn front desk of the museum. Della looks down at the boy with a bright smile, ready to answer any question he might have. “Miss Della, how did the people carry those phones in their pockets,” he asks, pointing to one of the vintage wooden crank phones leaning against the wall. While Krum has been around for over 100 years, the majority of the population has lived in the community for less than a decade. As Krum moves away from its past as a ranching and agricultural center, its identity is shifting away from these industries, becoming what some have called a “bedroom community” where people spend little time in the city itself. As the city is reborn in a new form, much like the bank building, the heritage and history of the community risks being for-

gotten as the population gradually loses its ties to the past. Della is not quite sure why she started collecting the trinkets that would later make up the museum pieces. However, she can still remember starting her collection at the age of 16 in 1958. Her first piece was an old steel box of vintage glass negatives from a local photographer who was moving out. The negatives showed Krum at the turn of the twentieth century, with the images straight out of the old west with wooden storefronts, horsedrawn carriages, and dirt roads that flooded with a heavy rain. The photos continue up until the 1930s, showing the transition from the horse and carriage to the Model T and the growth of Krum. Despite not knowing why she started, Della knows why she continues to work into her retirement. “I do this now for my kids, for all of the kids,” said Davis. “I want them to know the history of their home.” In the 54 years since she began, her col-

lection has grown to a massive collection of photo albums, obituaries, newspaper articles, school yearbooks and local business letters along with other trinkets and relics from estate sales as members of the community passed away. These days, many people simply donate pieces ranging from dresses to flour sacks when the time comes to clear a home. Janice Callarman, a volunteer at the museum, jokes that Della would sometimes get annoyed if someone cleared out a home without letting her know first. The museum opened in 2010 when the bank and the other buildings in the complex were donated to the Krum Historical Society, the city of Krum and the Krum Police Department. The museum kept the original bank teller cages and restored them to their previous shine, while the vault serves as an impromptu office and safe house for some of the museum’s more fragile pieces like Della’s glass negatives. See HISTORY on Page 46

From Page 45

History “We know we are not the only museum with teller cages,” says Janice. “But we laugh when they ask where we found ours.” The museum is funded by donations and fundraising by the Krum Society for Historical Preservation, to which Della belongs. Many of the officers, such as Janice, give up their Saturdays to volunteer at the museum and give their take on the history of the city. To push the money as far as she can, Della cuts costs where she can. While working during the week, she will often give up air conditioning and florescent lighting in exchange for free natural lighting through the museum’s front glass windows. Della has been trying to educate the newer residents of Krum, starting at a young age. She has worked with Bonnie Barthold, a third grade teacher in Krum, to make local history a part of the curriculum. Barthold was one of only a few teachers to include local history as a part of their lessons. In this push, Della donated copies of two of her four books written on the city’s history to the third grade classes and

June 24, 2012

invited the students to visit the museum each year around May. Many times, the children will return to the museum, bringing their parents with them. Della has a special collection, among the other documents in the museum. While it does not tell the history of the town, it carries a special meaning to Della. In a folder tucked away in the front desk, Della keeps every thank you letter she has received from the third graders. While the art is different on each, with the student’s favorite part of the museum, the same message is scrawled in multi-colored pencil: “Thank you.” Della’s most prized piece is the personal diary of Hattie Dyer, a teacher who was a center for the community for over 30 years. The diary describes Hattie’s trip across North America in the late 1920s. Hattie wrote on her visits to Upstate New York, Niagara Falls, Cuba, and Florida. Hattie described Florida as large and completely empty. “If she could go back on that trip, she’d find a lot of things have changed since back then,” Della said. Della feels a connection to Hattie, as she was her teacher in elementary school. The museum has an entire wall dedicated to Hattie and her contributions to the city

Denton Record-Chronicle

and the school system. Janice Callarman enjoys the model town, but cannot help but critique some of the inaccuracies in the layout. “It isn’t very accurate. These windmills were not here, and these houses were a bit further down,” she says, pointing to the three extra windmills in the diorama. She remembers that the town only had one windmill on the main road in town. As a child in the 1940’s she used to explore the town, memorizing the features. Included in the museum are photos dating back to the 1900s, a railroad switch and rafter from the long extinct Santa Fe rail depot that created the city, sickles, scythes, and cattle yolks from when Krum was one of the biggest grain and livestock producers in the state, and finally basketball trophies from Krum’s recent history as a powerhouse in AA division sports. With the donations of photos, part of Della’s work becomes piecing together the tattered pictures into a full picture of the community from one generation to the next. One mystery that Della is investigating to this day is a picture of a family outside one of the houses in the town. The house sports two front doors which stand perpendicular to each other, meeting at

the bottoms of two twin sets of steps at the ground level with potted plants sitting at the base. “We think this might be the Lang house,” she said. “But anyone who would know is gone.” Many times Della will spend some evenings driving down the well-traveled and familiar streets of her home trying to match clues from the photos to current locations, but decades of wear and repair make the job impossible in some cases. “The places I knew as a kid are gone,” she said. “I mean, the building is there but the name and the face have changed.” The museum itself is hoping to expand into the second floor of the building. “History establishes identity, so the history of a town determines its identity,” said Dr. Mike Campbell, chief historian with the Texas State Historical Association. “If the people do not know what their town has been, they do not know what it is now, and they have less of a basis for knowing what they should try to do next for their town.” Despite this, she isn’t worried about the future of the museum she helped create. S“There will always be someone to come along,” Della said. “Some kid might come around and pick up my work where it stopped.”
