His point is this: if you want to see something change, you can’t just sit back and wait for it to happen on its own. In order to make a change you have to be proactive and deliberate in your actions. Not only do you have to decide you want change, you have to work to make it happen.

Being proactive in making change – positive change – often means stepping out of your comfort zone, getting your hands a little dirty, doing something that, at first, you don’t really want to do, but know you should. Sometimes though, positive change is achieved by doing something you both want and need to do. Whatever the reasons, helping our members take the steps necessary to make positive change for themselves, for their families and for the greater community is what the Birmingham YMCA is all about.

“Round up” at JCPenney; benefit three YMCA afterschool programs August and October initiatives support Alabaster, Shades Valley, and Trussville branches

On August 5-16 and October 16-25, “round up” your JCPenney purchases to the nearest whole dollar and donate the difference to the Alabaster, Shades Valley, and Trussville branch afterschool programs.

JCPenney stores that are “rounding up” for Afterschool are located in Alabaster’s Colonial Promenade, Trussville’s Colonial Tutwiler Farm Promenade, and the Riverchase Galleria.

The JCPenney Afterschool Fund is a public charity that provides at-risk children access to life-enriching after school programs that inspire children to be smart, strong and socially responsible. To date, more than $70 million has been given to local Afterschool programs in every JCPenney community through partnerships that include YMCA of the USA. “The generous support of the JCPenney Afterschool Fund enhances our efforts to serve as many children as possible with meaningful, high-quality after school programming,” said Gwen Hatcher, Birmingham YMCA

Crunk isn’t like an old-fashioned stepbased aerobics class that can be hard on the joints. The movements involve more flowing motions, allowing for a great full-body workout, with plenty of cardio, that is also easy on the knees and other joints.

Have it your way!

The movement of your routine doesn’t have to be exactly what I’m doing. It’s your workout and you can put your own rhythm into it if you like. Everyone dances a little different from each other, which is great.

A lot of people say ‘I can’t go to that class because I can’t dance.’ Let me tell you, anybody can do this class. If you don’t have any rhythm when you come in, you will have some when you leave. It’s very easy for kids also. It doesn’t matter how old you are, anyone can do it.

Over 240 running enthusiasts braved the scorching temperatures on June 20, to compete in the 2009 Ronnie Noojin Race to the Courthouse through the streets of downtown Birmingham.

Sponsored by Hare Wynn, Newell & Newton and the Birmingham Young Lawyers Association, the Downtown Branch raised over $5,600 for Strong Kids & Communities programs.

Volunteers from the Young Lawyers Association, Hare Wynn, Y Acheivers teen program, and the UAB Medical School, gave their time to help the 2009 Race to the Courthouse be the most successful to date.

e joined the Y to improve our fitness, but we had no idea that it would save my husband's life. Tuesday, March 3, he had a cardiac arrest during tennis clinic. Thanks to the unbelievable response by both staff and members my husband is alive and well today.

“He spent (a) week in CCU at UAB Hospital. He has 7 stents and an implanted defibulator, but we (were able to come) home.

“We are so grateful it is hard to put into words. Every step of this potentially dreadful situation (from the ability to recognize, identify and take the appropriate actions) were handled in the most professional and caring manner.

The sharp rise in obesity has accounted for 20-30 percent of the rise in healthcare costs since 1979.

Here are some of the leading reasons we are fatter:

>>> The Trust for America’s Health recently released the 2009 edition of “F as in Fat: How Obesity Policies Are Failing America” and to no one’s surprise Alabama ranked 49th, It’s not a matter of vanity or pride that should concern us about this fact – it’s the economics of the situation that should sound like a fire alarm in our heads collectively. In a state that can barely afford to fund education – our healthcare costs are being accelerated in a way that pushes us toward insolvency.

Small changes can have a big impact on your health. During September the Birmingham YMCA will be spreading the word about the 2000/100 ratio; just 2000 additional steps of activity; and 100 fewer calories per day can make a difference. We will have a variety of activities in your branch like: fitness challenges to make your steps count, educational information on healthy lifestyles, nutrition and exercise and how to incorporate healthier alternatives in your lifestyle each day.

There’s a worn out joke about getting healthy that goes something like this: “I had to lose weight before I could join.”

Only thing; it’s no joke.

Plenty of people who want, and need, to improve their health and well-being, join the YMCA, but are then unable to overcome that very stigma. They simply stay home.

Enter teacher and photographer Mary Gray Hunter. With every good intention and goal, she rejoined the Mountain Brook Branch last year.

“I wanted to get back in shape, back in life,” she said. But her first efforts were thwarted. “When I went in for the first time, I got on the first piece of equipment I saw, a treadmill.” She was fumbling through getting started when a member walked up and asked if she had signed up for the machine. “You should have,” she was told.

Hunter wandered out of the branch, did not return, and on the very day that she was planning to cancel her membership, she received a call from PressPlay coordinator Caroline Bundy.

“I believe in synchronicity,” Hunter said, so when she heard the description of a program to help remove obstacles from new members, she decided that she was “open to giving it a try.”

Under the tutelage of Bundy and Carol Kutik, Hunter and the group gained the confidence that they could “get back in shape again.

“I wanted to garden, ride a bike, walk, look good in my clothes,” Hunter said of her goals.

Reflecting on her results following the six-week program: “I lost ten pounds. I feel better. My clothes feel better. I have a new passion for life. I believe in myself again,” she smiled.

The Birmingham YMCA is one of three associations nationwide helping develop a program that will position the YMCA as “an attractive gateway to health and well-being” for people not currently engaged — like Mary Gray Hunter.

Through Project: Big Shoulders, a process being spearheaded by YMCA of the USA Strategic Innovation, Ashley Bear-Snow and Michelle Oliver from the Mountain Brook Branch have worked alongside colleagues from the Pittsburgh and Los Angeles associations to develop the prototype program, PressPlay.

Ultimately, the group’s work will become a national program that can be easily shared with and adopted by local YMCAs across the country.

Victor and Christian Jackson Youth Center

Raising a child with a special need, like autism, is challenging. Multiply those challenges by two, and you might begin to understand the issues facing YMCA member Victoria Jackson.

The mother of a pair of boys with autism, Victor and Christian, Jackson has trusted the staff at the Birmingham YMCA Youth Center to not only care for her boys, but to also play a major role in their overall development.

Victor and Christian Jackson arrived at the old Five Points South Family Branch when they were 3 and 5 years old respectively. Now 9 and 11 and attending Afterschool and summer programming at the Youth Center, Jackson said she found a place that was open to accepting her sons and was also up to the challenges of caring for two children with autism.

“We came to the Y because no one else wanted to take them on,” Victoria said. “They understand the subtleties about the condition and have always been willing to make accommodations for them.”

For instance, the Youth Center staff takes special care to make sure the boys’ special dietary needs are met, and Jackson says she greatly appreciates the positive male role models on staff, a real concern of Jackson’s since her husband is away from home occasionally on military service.

In addition, Jackson says the Youth Center has made a huge difference in one seemingly small matter: tying shoes. After three years of working with her sons, even seeking out additional occupational therapy, Victor finally jumped that hurdle with the help of one of the Youth Center’s young counselors.

“Shatanna Holley taught Victor to tie his shoes. We’re still teaching Christian, but Victor has it,” Jackson said. “She told me and I began crying. She didn’t understand how important this was.”

e all know if we don’t do much, we’ll end up stuck in a chair watching television. It’s very good for a person to be able to feel like somebody cares about you.’

Being a member of the YMCA isn’t just about being physically fit - in large part it’s about belonging. For Isabel Palmer, coming to the Shades Valley Family Branch is about connecting with friends - old and new- while sharing the experience of water aerobics three days a week.

“It’s about friendship. I know people who have said ‘why don’t you go to such-and-such a pool.’ But, by that time I had made a lot of friends here and I don’t want to leave,” Palmer said. “I have met wonderful people here. It’s a friendship thing and I really do enjoy it.”

After moving to Birmingham from New York in the early 1950s, the Illinois native began coming to the Shades Valley Branch in the 1960s. Now 91, Palmer has been a vital part of the branch’s family for over four decades.

Palmer understands better than anyone how important it is to be part of a close-knit group of people. Over the years, She and her group of like-minded peers have welcomed newcomers with open arms to their class and have kept in touch with those who no longer make it on a regular basis.

Additionally, Palmer and her friends, such as Freda Welch, have celebrated birthdays with their fellow class mates, complete with lunch on the town and homemade birthday cakes. Palmer says taking care of each other emotionally and spiritually is just as important as taking care of yourself physically. It all goes hand-in-hand.

“It’s more than exercise. I think you don’t exercise as much if you don’t have a reason to come and be part of a class,” Palmer said. “We all know if we don’t do much, we’ll end up stuck in a chair watching television. It’s very good for a person to be able to feel like somebody cares about you.”

Marina Angus alabaster

In early July, 15-year old Marina Angus returned home from several weeks working as a volunteer Counselor In Training at a summer day camp in Manatee County, Florida. Having shown considerable leadership skills during her time as a CIT, Marina was asked to come back next year as a paid counselor, a fact she’s very proud of.

For Marina, the path to respect and grown-up responsibility was a little rocky at times. The oldest child, Marina began acting out following the divorce of her parents, occasionally getting into fights with other kids and arguing with her mother.

By the sixth grade, Marina was attending programs at the Alabaster Community Branch. With the help of executive director Gwen Hatcher and her staff as well as her involvement in the Leaders Club teen development program, Marina has developed into one of the shining stars of a group of already impressive young men and women at the Alabaster facility.

“I used to get into a lot of trouble,” Marina admits. “I think I’ve grown up a lot. Gwen and Emily (McClain) were so nice to me. They really helped me grow and become more mature since I started coming to the Y.” Through Leaders Club, Marina learned to exemplify the character values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility, through a variety of community service projects, including volunteering at a homeless shelter last summer. Marina said this and other experiences in Leaders Club helped prepare her for her role as a volunteer camp counselor.

“I’ve learned how to work with other people and how to approach working with these kids,” Marina said. “These kids showed me so much and I hope to continue to grow from what I’ve learned.”

Supporting the y

My life was changed – again – today.

T

hat’s the way it is when you’re associated with the YMCA, no matter if you’re a donor, volunteer, member, program participant, or staff member – it doesn’t matter. When your life’s journey intersects with the Y, your life will be changed. For the better.

Today, I read a letter from a woman who is serving time at Julia Tutwiler Prison. She has four children “on the outside” and wrote to ask if the YMCA could help take care of just one of them this summer. Her son had participated in YMCA Youth Sports in the past and this mom knew that if her son could remain a member of the YMCA family during her absence, he might bear the pain of her being gone just a little more easily.

Thanks to contributions received this year for our Strong Kids & Communities Campaign, the YMCA will provide the financial assistance and the safe, nurturing environment this little boy will need to weather the storm of his family’s crisis. He’ll be a “Y Kid” all summer long.

to Change a Life?

Many things drift across a Chaplain’s desk, not the least of which are numerous solicitations for magazines. Often these advertisements contain excerpts from the pages of past issues. Recently, one included an interview with a fellow named David Edwards. The magazine is The Sun from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and the title of the interview is “Nothing To Lose But Our Illusions.” It goes like this: David Edwards: It’s not enough to just sit there and have compassionate thoughts. Your compassionate thoughts need to be reflected in what you do. … You need to help other people.

Derrick Jensen (interviewer): What do you say to people who feel they are busy struggling to get by and don’t have time to help others?

Edwards: Once you start to see through the myth of status, possessions, and unlimited consumption as a path to happiness, you’ll find that you have all kinds of freedom and time. It’s like a deal you can make with the universe: I’ll give up greed for freedom. Then you can start putting your time to good use.

Jensen: And if someone says, “But the problems are so big, what can one person do?”

Edwards: Once you realize that helping others is also helping yourself, the size of the overall problems becomes irrelevant. You’re not a one-man or onewoman army out to save the whole world. You help simply because it does good and feels good.

Pretty good conversation! Sometimes we are overwhelmed by the size of the issues that demand our attention. But, as we have noted before, Michelangelo did not carve his magnificent “David” in one day. Nor, did Beethoven compose all nine symphonies in one evening. And, my suspicion is that Harper Lee did not write To Kill a Mockingbird in one relaxing weekend. But each of them started somewhere, with a chip, or a note, or a thought, and most of all with a vision.

No life is ever changed without a vision of what it can be. So, if you are so compelled, imagine what could be, what is not good but could be good, what human need stares you in the face. That human need may be only one person, but if you reach out and touch that person with compassion, then a life will be changed.

Greystone Family Branch welcomes new fitness director Scott Hults, also known as “Old Navy” across the association, has joined the Greystone Family Branch as Fitness Director. Scott, a retired U.S. Navy Captain, has been a personal trainer for five years and has worked with clients at Mountain Brook for nearly two years. He is a certified personal trainer, a master fitness trainer and holds a certification in nutrition.

Scott is also a Master Professional Bodybuilder who has competed in more than 30 bodybuilding competitions, including five Pro shows. He has won more than 50 bodybuilding trophies. In his last amateur contest, Scott won the NPC Mr. Alabama Masters title and in his first Pro show, Scott won the FAME North American Masters Pro Championship. (By the way, Scott is 66 years old.) The children in Summer Day Camp at the Vestavia Xpress branch wasted no time putting into action lessons they learned about getting along. During the first week of camp, campers learned about sportsmanship and the importance of working as a team.

Campers Abby Hager, Cassidy Geeslin, Karissa White, Maya Ruffin, Kenedi Jones, and Kyra Joyner, decided to put these ideas into practice, creating their own team banner - The Fantastic Four - and hanging it in the branch. Counselors Victoria Quarles & Helen King helped out with the project.

Earlier in the summer, campers at the Vestavia Xpress Branch were visited by a pair of four-legged friends. Childcare Director Dani Cato arranged forthe horses from a nearby farm. Dozens of kids had the opportunity to ride one of the horses in the upper parking lot at the Vestavia branch, many of whom had never seen a horse in person before.

normal day in the life of 12-year-old Amanda Bradley is nothing like that of the average middle schooler. During the summer, Amanda wakes up between 6-6:30 a.m. then heads to the pool for a two-hour practice session.

In the evening, she is back in the water at 6:30, working on her skills for up to two hours. In the fall and winter, Amanda can usually be found in the pool from 6-8 p.m. brushing up on her skills.

Since the age of seven, he Trussville Family Branch member has been a standout athlete on the swim team, spending 20 plus hours a week in the pool, setting a standard of dedication for her fellow team members. Somewhat shy and quiet but possessing a clever sense of humor, Amanda enjoys being in the water for a variety of reasons, some of which might be surprising.

“I just love being in the pool everyday. It’s one of my favorite things to do, because I just don’t like to sweat,” she said with a laugh. “It’s a really good and safe sport. I mean, I can eat as much as I want and still be skinny. I want to do it for the rest of my life.”

Swimming as a sport is a family tradition in the Bradley household. Amanda’s father was a competitive swimmer and her sister, Emily, and brother, Will, are also members of the swim team. For Amanda, the pool is a test of her character and discipline. and is an arena in which she comes alive.

“When I get up on the block and feel that tension of going off and in the flip-turn seeing all of these people ahead of me,” she said, “I just want to catch up and hit that wall as hard as I can.”

Amanda is currently working to make the cut for Southeasterns in the 50-Meter Freestyle and 50-Meter Fly. She will also be a part of the association-wide Swim Birmingham YMCA swim team, which will begin competition this fall.
