All of us involved with childcare want to help make attending a YMCA day, specialty, or overnight camp possible for all children, especially during these tough financial times. The Birmingham Metropolitan YMCA has been serving kids and families in our communities for 125 years. We have been here to help during good times and bad. Here are some suggestions: Financial Assistance Should financial situations jeopardize your child attending a Birmingham YMCA summer camp, let us help you through the association’s financial assistance program. Scholarships to attend day, sports, specialty, overnight, and residential camp are available on the basis of financial need. We’ll make the application process easy.

Life Notes

Flexible Payment Plans For many families it is easier to pay monthly than to pay the entire balance at one time. Let us work with you to create a payment plan that is right for your family.

‘Let us help you through the association’s financial assistance program. Scholarships are available on the basis of financial need.’

Tax Time If you will be getting a tax refund, what better way to use that money than to invest it in your children? Sign up today and pay the balance when you get your tax refund. Do you have industrious children? Here are 10 ways your camper can raise money for YMCA summer camp. 1. Create a “good works” network and promote it throughout the community….walk dogs, wash cars, mow lawns. 2. Make a plea to Pastoral staff to help you raise necessary funds…see if he’ll shave his head if you reach your goal! 3. Sell lemonade and cookies. 4. Hold a pie/baked goods auction. 5. Pet sitting. 6. Baby Sitting. 7. Help family and friends with random chores. 8. Contact local businesses and see if you can help in their business. 9. Yard work (pulling weeds, gardening, etc.) for neighbors and family members. 10. Running errands for others.

3 ways to help your kids make the most of summer camp Ask specific questions

Know what your child is doing during the day, and ask specific questions about those activities. “Did you shoot the bow and arrow today? What was it like?” “What’s your counselor’s name? Do you like him/ her?” “What are the names of some of the campers in your group? By asking specific questions you will stimulate meaningful conversation with your child.

Know the camp’s goals

Find out the goals of the particular camp in which your child is participating, and determine whether or not those goals are being met. If the goal of the camp is spiritual growth, ask your child what he’s learning during chapel or values time. If the goal is skill development, determine if your child is indeed learning a new skill. Don’t hesitate to contact the camp director if you are unsure of a camp’s goals or unsure if they are being met.

Coach your child on how to deal with new experiences

Camp is often very social – more so than school. This may present new challenges for your child. Ask your child questions about the experience, and coach them on ways to deal with these new, and sometimes difficult, situations in the future.

downtown Birmingham YMCA pays respects to longtime board member, friend

He was a leader and provider for his family and those with whom he worked and volunteered for. Former Birmingham YMCA board member, James Evan Simpson, died on March 10. His leadership is visible in the organizations he represented, including serving on the board for the UAB English department and the Samford University College of Arts and Sciences. Simpson’s love for history would bring him to serve as a Trustee and Docent of the Birmingham Museum of Art, Vice Chairman of the Alabama Department of Archives and History, and had served in leadership positions with Independent Presbyterian Church, The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, the Metropolitan YMCA, Eye Sight Foundation of Alabama, and Lyman Ward Academy. He represented these organizations over the course of his life and had a day job too. After attending Birmingham University School, Lyman Ward Military Academy, Webb School, Simpson graduated from Loomis Institute. He continued his studies at Princeton University and the University of Virginia Law School. Simpson was fluent in several languages, served as a Lieutenant in the Field Artillery in Germany for two years and visited the battle fields of Europe, South Africa and the United States. James Evan Simpson was a working man and a leader to the greater Birmingham area. He practiced law for over 50 years with the firm of Lange, Simpson, Robinson and Somerville and its successors. He is survived by his son, James Evans Simpson, Jr. and wife Jill; his son, Karl Alexander Simpson; and their mother, Sandra S. Simpson; two grandchildren; brother, Henry Simpson; his nieces and nephews; and his beloved companion, Mary Steiner.

Body Kids

R

emember the after school program you attended as a kid? You most likely spent time watching cartoons, playing four-square or pick-up basketball, eating sugary snacks, and generally killing time until your parents returned to rescue you. The Birmingham Metropolitan YMCA has always strived to program after school a little differently than most, offering a structured environment for continued learning and positive role models for area children. Now, thanks to a grant by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs, and the Alabama Department of Education, Afterschool at the Birmingham YMCA is about to get even better. Beginning this May, the YMCA will offer a curriculum-based fitness and wellness program called Catch Kids Club in all branches offering Afterschool. The CATCH (Coordinated Approach To Child Health) Kids Club is an activity and nutrition education program designed for elementary school aged children in an after-school or summer setting. The program is composed of nutrition education materials, including snack activities, and a physical activity component, teaching kids how to eat smart and develop lifelong physical activities that promote fitness in a fun environment. Catch Kids Club was piloted at three Birmingham YMCA branches during the 2008-09 school year – Trussville, Shelby County, and the Birmingham YMCA Youth Center. The program comes with all the equipment, tools and instructions necessary to incorporate the program’s activities in a way that gets kids moving and working out while having a great time. “What I really like about Catch Kids Club is that it gets our kids playing and having fun, but they don’t realize they’re exercising in the process,” said Bethany Davis, Childcare Director of the Birmingham YMCA Youth Center. “There are a couple of games that have become their favorite games to play,” Bethany added. “When they request certain activities on a regular basis, it’s just a great thing. They are asking me to exercise but the just don’t realize it. It’s really pretty amazing.” The CATCH program was proven effective scientifically through a four-state clinical trial, to endorse healthier actions in kids. Results show that participating children over the years maintained lower fat levels and higher levels of physical activity compared to children who had not participated in the program. YMCA staff will begin CATCH training on May 1. Contact the childcare director at your neighborhood branch for more information.

Flush with pedestrian areas and color-coded biking lanes, this photo shows a futuristic view of Cahaba Road near the Birmingham Zoo and Botanical Garden near the Mountain Brook Branch YMCA. The photo is part of a presentation by Dan Burden of Walkable Communities, a Florida-based company charged with investigating ways to transform Birmingham's roads into - well - walkable communities.

F

ocused on making the YMCA’s vision to transform our community into one of the healthiest in America a reality, the Birmingham YMCA is currently working on initiatives to transform our community into one of the most “walkable” in the nation. Since being selected as a 2009 Pioneering Healthier Communities (PHC) location the Birmingham YMCA and partner coach The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham are actively working with other community leaders pursuing policies and changes to the built environment that promote healthier eating and active living. Recently the PHC team had a chance to share the story of what some of these changes can look like with a larger audience through the Jefferson County Health Action Partnership’s annual Health Action Summit. “Realizing the potential for improving the health of our community through cityscapes that invite increased physical activity YMCA’s HEALTHY COMMUNITY VISION is one of the key messages of our YMCA Pioneering Healthier Communities initiative,” said Lisa Jones, Director of Association INCLUDES WALKING CITYSCAPE Advancement for the Birmingham YMCA. “Our PHC group of community leaders has learned over the past few months the critical role that policy and the built environment play in supporting lifestyle health through increased physical activity and healthier eating; it was only natural that we would want to bring that message to a broader audience locally.” Delivering the message of walkability was Dan Burden, founder the aptly named Walkable Communities, a non-profit organization with a mission of promoting

A glimpse of the future

walkability as the cornerstone of successful, vibrant communities. Burden’s presentation used technology he called ‘morphing’ in which a current photo of a basic busy road is gradually transformed into a healthier pedestrian-friendly street, complete with color-code bike lanes, wide sidewalks, grass and tree-lined traffic barriers, and shops and restaurants. The concept illustrates how inefficient community design over the last 50 years has had an adverse effect on our overall well-being, but how these mistakes can be corrected over time. “The way that we design our neighborhoods and especially coming back to the central cities, people are going to have so many more friends and associates that they’re going to become healthier,” said Burden. “We know there is a direct correlation in health with how many people you know and how many people you can go to if you need help. Social health, psychological health, emotional health and physical health are all tied together. “One thing we know about obesity and Type II diabetes is, that the more street connectivity, the healthier the people become, the safer the streets become, and the lower the crime rate,” Burden said. “Everything improves as we see a return to proper street making and the way we orientate our buildings.” Burden, a nationally recognized authority on bicycle and pedestrian facilities and programs, and his company have worked all over the nation since Walkable Communities founding in 1996 and has many success stories, including a stretch of highway in San Diego. Once a typical five-lane highway, with no sidewalks, traffic signals and little economic activity; the area is now one of the city’s crowning achievements. Burden calls the process going on a “road diet”. Burden and his associates redesigned the area with roundabouts at intersections, removing the four-way traffic signals, installed green medians in the center, built up new sidewalks and crosswalks, and added bike lanes, among other improvements. The area went from a section of town where new businesses closed on an average of 18 months to one of the brightest commercial districts in San Diego. This is the hope for our area: to transform the community into one that encourages walking and biking, spurs new economic activity, and better connects people to the community in where they live. “Fifteen years ago these tools didn’t exist. We didn’t know how to build streets correctly. We were only making them bigger, wider, fatter and faster. We were destroying social mixing of people, and entire neighborhoods, by doing that,” Burden said. “We need to stop building communities for cars and start building for people.” 8 www.ymcabham.org

Top A current view of West Boulevard in the Roebuck area near the Northeast Family Branch. Below A 'morphed' view of what West Boulevard could look like if plans to transform the area are carried out. Burden showed theoretical transformations of four areas of Birmingham: Cahaba Road, West Boulevard, 3rd Avenue North in West End, and 2nd Avenue South near Pepper Place.

Body Wellness

I

ncorporate physical activity into your life and talk with your physician about what types of exercise are best suited to your health. That’s the simple, but yet unfulfilled, message of The American College of Sports Medicine’s (ACSM) Exercise is Medicine™ month. The Birmingham YMCA is supporting the initiative by waiving the joining fee for new members who bring in a physician referral prescribing exercise as medicine (can be printed from website www.exerciseismedicine.org within PUBLIC section, toolkit). Research has proven that exercise helps to prevent or cure numerous chronic conditions and diseases, such as Type II diabetes and high blood pressure. Physicians play a crucial role in presenting this information to their patients. Exercise is Medicine™ encourages physicians and healthcare professionals to discuss exercise with their patients, and conversely, it urges patients to feel comfortable starting the same conversation with their healthcare provider. "If there is one single thing you can do to improve your health, there is no doubt it is exercise," said Dr. Sophia Lal, local Sports Medicine physician. "Regular physical activity is so powerful in maintaining and improving health that it should be prescribed, just as medicine or any drug would be. This idea deserves the attention of the month of May. We hope people will pledge to be more active this month in an effort to gain that positive impact on their health." It’s true: exercise is medicine! Let a membership to the Birmingham YMCA be your prescription.

Exercise is medicine Research has proven that exercise helps to prevent or cure numerous chronic conditions and diseases, such as Type II diabetes and high blood pressure. Bring in a physician’s referral for an exercise regime in May, and we’ll waive the Birmingham YMCA membership joining fee

EXERCISE IS MEDICINE™: The Facts

• Regular physical activity can help prevent chronic disease and lower mortality rates. • Healthcare systems -- physicians -- must begin to think of exercise as a medication that should be prescribed to patients. • When healthcare and exercise merge, patients can be better helped to find a beneficial exercise regimen. • For more information on Exercise is Medicine™, log onto www.exerciseismedicine.org • Ask your primary care physician if you can be medically cleared for exercise and have them fill out an Exercise is Medicine™ prescription (the form can be printed from the website) to get you started! • If you have a specific musculoskeletal concern that you think may limit your activity, Dr. Sophia Lal is available for consultation / appointment through www.fagansportsmedicine.com. My Mission:

I

. . . to be friendly and dependable. Ralphe Locke

26 www.ymcabham.org

n every walk of life, we find those quiet spirits that routinely and dependably perform their duties to the best of their abilities without pomp and circumstance. We have several of those spirits at the YMCA, each unique, yet similar. Today, we choose to spotlight Ralph Locke of the Downtown Branch. Ralph has served the Birmingham YMCA membership for 22 years in different capacities, but mostly serving the Downtown Branch. Some of the membership and staff remember Ralph as part of the YMCA’s uniformed and armed security team. Pat Rookis, YMCA member since 1957 stated, “I remember Ralph was parking security for the YMCA. He was never a big talker, but would always go out of his way to help the members and solve problems. Ralph has always been nice and friendly whenever I have seen him and that’s rare to find over so many years.” He said he couldn’t imagine this place without Ralph. In 2005, the Birmingham YMCA made an investment that garnered four new branches and a program. The YMCA “world” was changing rapidly. One of those changes was centralized maintenance. We added three maintenance staff members to our four staff members for a total of seven. Ralph is the only original staff person still working for the YMCA. According to Gary Lovelady, Maintenance Director, Ralph knew the Downtown Branch like the back of his hand. So to expand his knowledge, Ralph was assigned to different branches within the association. He made the changes without any questions, and still has that can do, quiet approach reminding Gary of his first day meeting Ralph. He was changing T12 lights to T8 to save money, to which Gary said, “I wish all maintenance staff knew how to do that.” Caring, respect, responsibility and honesty — those are our character values and Ralph has them on display every day.
