United I.S.D. will hold it’s premiere League of UISD Legends ---Alumni Recognition Program on May 8th at Paseo Real. This 2013-14 school year we instituted a new tradition that will acknowledge special alumni who represent each of our four high schools, who have excelled both academically and professionally, and who today and for years to come are making a difference in society.

We take pride in that these individuals played a very important role at their respective campuses and as part of our United I.S.D. family they continue to be an inspiration to current and future generations of Bulldogs, Panthers, Longhorns and Wolves. We celebrate the positive impact and contributions that each of them has made to communities across the country, as well as, ours. We congratulate all of them on their induction into the pantheon of distinguished League of UISD Legends.

Maria Aurora Garcia, MD United High School Class of 1990

Dr. Garcia was born in Nuevo Laredo and raised in Laredo, Texas. She attended United High School 1988 and was then accepted to join the charter class of the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science, formally graduating from high school in 1990 having earned two years of college credit. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Science from Texas A&M University in 1992 and a medical degree from the University of Michigan medical school in 1997 both on full scholarships. During her medical training, she volunteered at a pregnancy counseling center that helped women with unplanned/unwanted pregnancies find alternative options to abortion. Dur-

Linda A. Garza-Martinez United High School Class of 1994 Linda Garza-Martinez is a local practicing attorney for over 12 years and a graduate of the United High School Class of 1994. As a student at United High School, Linda participated in many activities including cheerleading, mariachi band and student government. She then attended the University of Texas at Austin on scholarship and graduated in 1997 with Honors with a Bachelor of Journalism and a specialization in Public Relations. During her college career, she had the distinct opportunity to work at the Texas State Legislature as a House Sergeant, as a Legislative Aide for State Representative Roberto Gutierrez and as a District Aide for then State Representative Henry Cuellar. After graduating from the University of Texas, she was accepted into the University of Houston Law Center and obtained her Doctor of Jurisprudence in 2001.

ing her summers while in medical school she was a camp counselor at Camp Blogett, a United Way Camp for under-priviledged, inner city children.

Dr. Garcia then completed a residency program in Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center in 2001 and earned her board certification in 2003. During her residency training she participated in medical mission trips to Nicaragua that provided women with free pap smear screening.

She moved back to her hometown of Laredo in September 2001 and served the women of this community as a practicing obstetrician/gynecologist thru June 2010. She was a church member at the Church of the Crossroads, volunteered for educational outreach programs for the women of El Cenizo, and financially supported Alegria, a day camp in Nuevo Laredo that provides food, clothing, and education to poor children.

In June 2010, Dr. Garcia closed her practice to pursue further medical training. She is currently completing a second residency program in anesthesiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. She will stay on as a faculty member with the Department of Anesthesiology upon completion of her residency in June 2014.

She is married to Mark McPherson, a US Marshal supervisor and has two children, Ava Marina (age 6) & Levi Mark ( age 3). ony Division. As an Assistant District Attorney for nearly 9 years, Linda handled thousands of cases and distinguished herself as a skilled trial attorney. She was able to secure the conviction of several individuals in high-profile felony cases. After leaving the DA’s office, Linda worked at the Webb County Public Defender’s Office, representing indigent individuals charged with felony crimes. As an Assistant Public Defender for two years, she was selected to serve as a committee member and defense counsel of the 406th District Court Drug Court and Sobriety Treatment Court programs.

She is currently in private practice, handling criminal cases, family law cases and general civil litigation. In November of last year, she was selected to serve as the defense counsel for our veterans participating in the newly created 406th & 341st District Court Veteran’s Treatment Program.

Throughout her career, Linda has participated in several organizations. She was a board member and secretary for the Webb County Children’s Advocacy Center. She has served as Treasurer for the Laredo Young Lawyers Association, President of the Webb County Women’s Bar Association, and is currently the Continuing Legal Education Director for the Laredo-Webb County Bar Association. She has served on the Executive Committee of the Webb County Democratic Party as the elected Chair for Precinct 239 and she has recently been chosen to provide continuing legal education to her fellow attorneys by being a seminar speaker for the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. She is a member of San Martin de Porres Church and an ACTS retreat team member.

She is also part-owner of local gym, G7 Athletics with her parents and siblings.

Linda is married to local attorney and current Webb County Democratic Chair, Silverio Martinez. Together they have 4 children, Rebecca, Abigail, Ana Gabriela and Andres.

he enjoyed the privilege of working for Laredo’s oldest civil engineering firm. He went on to begin his own firm, Gilpin Engineering Company. He credits Jack Foster for influencing his most significant career choices.

Mr. Gilpin’s experience as a project manager of large scale developments is an asset since this School District constantly faces significant growth demands putting an emphasis on planning and construction. “I believe that overwhelming challenges such as development and security can distract from the primary mission of a school and my experience in planning and management will help lessen that burden,” said Gilpin.

Dr. Dagoberto I. Gonzalez, Jr. United High School Class of 1988

Dr. Dagoberto Gonzalez is a native Laredoan. Dr. Gonzalez attended United High School graduating as Salutatorian of the Class of 1988. During high school, he developed an interest in health care being a Doctors Hospital Junior Volunteer. He also participated in varsity basketball, track, tennis and baseball. As a senior, he was selected to the All District Team, District All Academic Team and the All City Team in baseball under Coach Alfredo Espinoza.

After graduating from high school, he attended Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, where he graduated in 1992. He graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelors of Science degree in Biomedical Science making the Dean’s List every semester. While at Texas A&M, he was a member of Company D-2 of the Corps of Cadets. He was inducted into the General O.R. Simpson Corps Honor Society and was the Scholastics Officer for his company. While a freshman, he was chosen as the Outstanding Academic Freshman for the entire Corps of Cadets.

After graduating from Texas A&M, he continued to further his education by attending the Texas A&M Health Science Center Medical School in College Station. It was at this time that he was awarded the Health Profession Scholarship by the United States Air Force. His military career began while he attended medical school and he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He graduated with a Doctorate in Medicine in 1996. While in medical school he attended the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine graduating with honors.

Dr. Gonzalez was selected by the USAF to attend a residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. He was awarded the rank of Captain and was the first Hispanic to attend this prestigious residency graduating in the year 2000. While

there, he was chosen as the Outstanding Obstetrics Chief Resident and the Outstanding Gynecologic Surgeon for his graduating class. While in residency, he published multiple research papers and presented at national conferences. It was at this time in his career where he developed an interest in humanitarian assistance being chosen to provide healthcare to underdeveloped countries in South and Central America.

After graduating from residency, he was awarded the rank of Major and was chosen to remain on staff at Wilford Hall Medical Center to serve as an attending physician teaching residents the practice of Obstetrics & Gynecology. He became an Assistant Professor for the Uniformed Services Health Consortium Medical School. He continued to publish research papers and present at national conferences. He was then selected as a Special Experience Identifier for the Air Force continuing his love for humanitarian assistance by providing his services to missions in Chile, Easter Island, Nicaragua, Guatemala, the Galapagos Islands, and El Salvador. Dr. Gonzalez completed his military career and was honorably discharged in 2004 with the rank of a Major.

Dr. Gonzalez began his private practice in Laredo in 2004 opening Obstetrics & Gynecology Associates of Laredo, P.A. He advanced the medical care in Laredo by paving the way for minimally invasive surgery in gynecology. He has served in multiple leadership positions to include Chief of Obstetrics & Gynecology for Doctors Hospital, Chief of Staff for Laredo Medical Center in 2013 and was appointed to serve on the Governing Board of Laredo Medical Center. He has been awarded the Compassionate Doctor Award and Top Doctor by his patients. In addition, he was selected as Laredo Morning Times’ Best Ob/Gyn in 2012 and 2013. He continues his love of teaching by allowing Alexander Magnet High School students to rotate through his clinic and get a glimpse of the life of a local physician.

Dr. Gonzalez is married to a pharmacist, Patricia J. Gonzalez, who also attended United High School and Texas A&M University. They have two children, Alejandro and Nicole. Alex attends the Alexander Magnet Program where he plans on following in his father’s footsteps.

Nicole is a 7th grader at United Day School.

Doctor of Physical Therapy, Carla Gutierrez has been a practicing physical therapist in Laredo, TX for approximately 7 years now. She graduated with honors, as a junior, in the top ten percent of her class from United High School in 2000. She was then accepted to the Laredo Community College Honors Program under a 2 year academic scholarship. In 2002, Carla graduated Magna Cum Laude with Honors from LCC and transferred to the University of Texas at San Antonio. While at UTSA, Carla worked on completing her prerequisites, admission requirements, and selection process for acceptance to the University of Texas Health and Science Center at San Antonio Physical Therapy program. Carla was selected for admission to the UTHSCSA PT program in August 2004 and received her Masters Degree in Physical Therapy in May 2007. She then returned to Laredo, TX to begin her physical therapy career with her mentor of many years PT, Aleth Oaferina; this career choice that has allowed her to serve her community by promoting physical independence and health amongst the geriatric population of Laredo. After several years in practice, Carla decided to pursue her Doctoral Degree and was accepted, to the inaugural transitional DPT class at her alma-mater; coincidentally, on the most blessed day of her life, Dec. 7, 2011 (the day her precious angel was born). Carla was able to work as a full time physical therapist, care for the loves of her life, her son Caleb, and husband, Dorian, all while completing her Doctoral degree in May 2013. All of this could not have been done without the unconditional love and support from her rocks-her mother and father, Carlos and Cordelia Orengo.

Steve E. Landin United High School Class of 1988 Chief Landin is a proud 1988 graduate of United High School.

He is the Fire Chief and the Emergency Management Coordinator for the City of Laredo. He credits his alma matter for providing him with a first class educational experience that has helped him throughout his career.

In high school, Chief Landin was a member of the UHS “Mighty Longhorn Band” where he played the trumpet. He competed in UIL All-City and All-District Bands throughout his four years in high school. He was also a member of the UIL Region Jazz Band in his Junior year and was a member of the UIL All-Region Band, his Junior and Senior years in high school.

Chief Landin holds an Associate’s Degree in Fire Technology from Pikes Peaks Community College in Colorado and a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance and Economics with an emphasis in Fire Administration from Empire State College in New York. Chief Landin is a graduate of the City of Laredo Employee Leadership Development Program. He is a Certified Public Manager and holds various Master level certifications from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection which include Master Firefighter, Master Airport Firefighter, Master Arson Investigator, and Master Fire Inspector. His other certifications include Rescue, EMS, Haz-Mat, Peace Officer, and Fire Service Instructor.

In his spare time, Chief Landin enjoys volunteering and encourages others to donate their time to the community. He also enjoys spending time with his family.

Crystal Holstine Nieto United High School Class of 2002 Crystal is a proud graduate of the United High School class of 2002.

While attending United, she was a varsity cheerleader, member of the National Honor Society and president of the Interact club. She graduated as Salutatorian and was accepted into the University of Texas Pan – American, Baylor College of Medicine Premedical Honors College which included an 8 year scholarship for undergraduate and medical education. While at UTPA, Crystal was also on the cheerleading squad who participated in numerous community outreach events. She was a college tutor at a local elementary school and provided private tutoring for elementary and middle school students. She graduated

Jose Abraham Lopez, MD United High School Class of 1984 Jose Abraham Lopez, MD is a 1984 graduate of United High School. Dr. Lopez attended classes here at Laredo Junior College for two years before moving to San Antonio to attend UTSA. Although starting out as a pre-med biology major, Dr. Lopez changed his degree to Clinical Laboratory Science.

Following graduation, he proceeded to work in that field performing flow cytometry analysis of breast cancer tumors and blood at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas. Following this period Dr. Lopez attended and graduated from University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas in 1999. During medical school, he continued his interest in research and was involved in publications regarding resuscitation of hypovolemic shock. At this time, Dr. Lopez accepted a military scholarship and committed to service upon graduation as a physician in the U. S. Army.

After completing a year internship at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Dr. Lopez served as a General Medical Officer with the First Cavalry Division for five years. During this time, he was assigned as the Division Support Command Surgeon for the First Team (1ST CAV). He participated in numerous field exercises to include 4 trips to the National Training Center in the Mojave Desert that would prepare him for deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom II in March 2004. Dr. Lopez served as the brigade surgeon and senior medical officer for the 515th Forward Support Battalion (FSB), a newly formed battalion of the First Cavalry stood up to enable the execution of their mission in Baghdad. Dr. Lopez’s team treated and stabilized over 350 casualties, both military and civilian, for transfer to higher level of care. Dr. Lopez received the Bronze Star for his service during this year long deployment. Dr. Lopez left the Army in 2005 after rising to the rank of Major.

At this time, he returned to El Paso for his medical residency at Texas Tech University Health Science center (TTUHSC), El Paso campus. Here, he completed an Emergency Medicine residency in 2008, serving as academic chief resident in his final year. Dr. Lopez today is a board certified Emergency physician and is the medical director for the emergency department for Providence Memorial Hospital in El Paso. He continues to work with TTUHSC-El Paso where he is involved in residency training and teaching 1st and 2nd year medical students in case simulations and clinical case correlations.

Dr. Lopez is the son of Jose Alfredo Lopez, Sr. and Rosa Maria Lopez of Laredo, TX. He has 5 brothers and sisters. He is married to Sheila M. Bennett from Fredericksburg, TX. They have two sons, Francis Christian, 15 and Abraham Augustin, 14. They currently live in El Paso, TX, however they look forward to moving back to the San Antonio area.

Magna Cum Laude in May 2006 and moved to Houston to continue her education at Baylor College of Medicine.

While in medical school, she participated in organizations such as the Baylor Pediatric Student Association, the National Network of Latin American Medical Students and the American Medical Student Association. As a part of these groups, she was involved in community health fairs and high school outreach programs specifically for the underserved populations of Houston.

It was after her first year in medical school that she married her husband Roman, whom she met in college as both were recipients of the Premedical Honors College scholarship. After beginning clinical rotations in her second year of medical school, it soon became clear that the field of pediatrics was her calling. She matched for a residency position through Baylor College of Medicine with affiliations at Texas Children’s Hospital and Ben Taub General Hospital. One week after her medical school graduation she gave birth to her first son, Roman Nieto, III. For the next three years, Crystal trained under some of the most well known and well respected pediatric specialists in the field. She worked countless hours in both inpatient and outpatient settings all while balancing her motherly duties. While in residency, she continued in her leadership and community involvement roles as well. She participated in a quality improvement project geared to improve communication between physicians and nurses, was named head of the Blattner resident society, was chair for a Christmas toy drive at a local clinic and was named Ben Taub Hospital Newborn Chief for the month of July in 2013. In her last year as a resident, Crystal gave birth to her second son, Max. After completing residency in January 2014, she began working at a Texas Children’s outpatient clinic in an underserved area of Houston. At this clinic, she sees any and every patient that needs to be cared for regardless of their insurance status. This is one of only five clinics in the Houston/Metro area that sees patients with no coverage. In only the short time she has been there, patients are already so grateful for the help and guidance she has provided. She has become a trusted and respected member of the care team and enjoys guiding her patients and families to healthy lifestyles.

Crystal currently resides in Pearland, a quiet Houston suburb. She enjoys spending time with her family and enjoying the beautiful Texas weather at local parks. She also enjoys baking, cooking and entertaining friends. Without the solid foundation that her parents and early education provided, she would not be the successful person she is today.

Ronald Rodriguez United High School Class of 1986

Ron Rodriguez is an accomplished trial lawyer with numerous enormous verdicts that have withstood appellate review. Ron Rodriguez is a 1986 graduate of United High School. He is a 1990 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin School of Business and a 1993 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin School of Law. He also earned a certificate in international law at the University of London, in London, England.

Ron is Board Certified in Personal Injury Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

He is a Past President of the Laredo-Webb County Bar Association, and a former member of the District 12 Grievance Committee. He is a former Chair of the Trial Court Rules Sub-Committee of the State Bar of Texas and was appointed by the Texas Supreme Court to the Texas Supreme Court Ancillary Proceedings Task Force.

At U.T. Law School, Ron served as an editor of the Review of Litigation. His competition record in legal advocacy was stellar. Ron was a finalist in the Client Counseling Competition, was the Champion of the Mediation Competition and was twice honored with membership on The University of Texas School of Law National Interscholastic Mediation Competition Team. He was also inducted to the prestigious Board of Advocates.

Ron is the President of The Law Offices of Ronald Rodriguez, P.C. Ron’s main areas of practice, upon which he has successfully served as lead trial and appellate counsel, include complex litigation involving personal injury and civil trial law, with a particular focus on wrongful death and catastrophic injury cases. He is licensed to practice law by the State Bar of Texas and is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, and the United States District Court, Southern and Western Districts of Texas, and the District of Massachusettes, in Boston Massachusettes.

Ron is a frequent speaker on cutting edge advancements in civil trial law in legal conferences

throughout the country, on legal topics that impact and protect the lives of innocent victims.

Ron has served his community as an adjunct professor in Business Law and Political Science at Texas A&M International University. He is a former legal analyst and writer for the Laredo Morning Times. He is currently KGNS’ legal analyst and the host of Legal Update. Laredo’s Texas Rural Legal Aid has also honored Ron locally for his Contribution and Commitment to Justice for All, and by the LULAC Council No. 12 as a Tejano Achiever in 2010. Ron has always supported UISD. He has been a frequent speaker at Career Day at many schools throughout UISD, and has served as a UIL judge for UISD’s debate competition. He was also honored as a distinguished alumnus at Clark Middle School, his alma matter, and gave the keynote speech at their National Junior Honor Society Induction Ceremony. Ron also served as a member of the Citizen Bond Committee that successfully passed UISD’s recent bond to benefit UISD students and our community long into the future.

Ron also volunteers his time to serve his community and parish. He has been a lector at St. Patrick’s church for the last ten years, and has served on team on at least five ACTS retreats at St. Patrick’s and one at St. Martin de Porras. Ron has also been recognized for his financial commitment and support of St. Patrick’s ACTS retreat ministry. He has also been a volunteer baseball little league coach, and kids basketball and volleyball coach.

Ron’s philanthropic endeavors and efforts to help to protect the innocent and needy go beyond Laredo. He was a VIP guest and philanthropist together with Antonio Banderas helping the needy in Colorado at a recent fundraiser in Aspen. He has also collaborated with the real Erin Brockovich in Malibu, California, and with former President Bill Clinton at the Plaza Hotel in New York, in effort to protect civil rights throughout the country.

Ron successfully secured the 6th largest jury verdict in all civil cases in the United States in 2006. He successfully secured affirmation of that case before the Texas Court of Appeals, making new law that will protect the civil rights of Texans forever. He later secured a favorable settlement of that case for his clients assuring the financial protection of the minor children for the rest of their lives.

Ron has the honor of securing the largest verdicts ever in the history of Willacy County, Raymondville, Texas and in Dimmitt County, Carrizo Springs, Texas. He has many multi-million dol-

lar jury verdicts to his credit as well, here in Webb County, Texas, representing individuals in his community that have been victimized and catastrophically injured, usually by large multi-national corporations. Recently, just last December, Ron secured a $281 Million Dollar jury verdict, the largest jury verdict in Texas in 2013, and the 7th largest jury verdict in the country, representing the family of a local veteran.

wrote my dissertation on the infamous Arizona immigration bill, Senate Bill 1070, and its effect on Latino political attitudes and participation. I have shared several portions of this research at national and international research conferences, with my students, and in an article that was accepted for publication by a peer reviewed journal, Public Administration Quarterly.

I am now part of a transatlantic research team who was awarded a research grant through a very competitive process. This team was funded by the Sorbonne University and Sciences Po in Paris, France, and also studies immigration policies and political mobilization. As an added bonus, I get to spend time in Paris eating delicious crepes! I am a full-time professor for the City University of New York, and I enjoy teaching classes about government and policies.

I have run two full marathons (26.2 miles of fun)! The first was in 2012 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and I also ran the NYC Marathon last year for a charity dedicated to providing life-saving cardiothoracic surgeries for children in need around the globe.

I am happily married; my husband (whom I met at TAMIU), Christopher Saldivar, and I enjoy life in NYC by frequenting Broadway Theater and cheering on the New York Yankees.

My younger sister, Tanya Moreno, who also graduated from TAMIU, will receive my award.

We are both first-generation college graduates and take great pride in education.

I am originally from Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. I am the oldest of three, and Spanish was the main language in our household. I graduated from United High School in 2002 (as a junior) and began my studies at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU). I completed my Bachelor of Arts in Communications with honors in 2005.

I began working at TAMIU as a financial aid counselor right after completing my bachelor’s degree, while working on my Master of Public Administration. I loved working in financial aid and visiting the local high schools to assist students and their families in preparing for college. Once my MPA was finished, I consulted with a great professor, Dr. Peter Haruna, on doctoral programs.

He advised me throughout the entire process and is invaluable to where I am today.

I was accepted into Rutgers’s School of Public Affairs and Administration in Newark, New Jersey and graduated with a 4.0 in spring 2012. I am an advocate of social equity and justice. I

Alex Aguilar United South High School Class of 1998

Alex Aguilar is a 1998 graduate of United South High School and is currently employed as a police officer, K9 handler, for the City of Laredo.

Alex had committed to serve our country his junior year of high school. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17 in 1997. He completed his senior year while being a member of the USMCJROTC program in United South High School. The program prepared him both mentally and physically for his enlistment. Two weeks after graduation, Alex departed for boot camp at MCRD San Diego, California. Upon completing his training, Alex was stationed at MCAS Miramar, San Diego, California.

He began to take college courses throughout his active duty service. His military contract was set to end June 15, 2002; however, he decided to extend his contract in order to

be able to deploy with his unit in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as the United States was on the verge of going to war. Upon his completion of the deployment to the Middle East, Alex was honorably discharged and left the Marine Corps with the rank of Sergeant.

On January 2004, he was hired by the City of Laredo and completed the LCC Regional Police Academy. He accepted the Police Oath of Service to serve and protect the citizens of our community. In 2007, he was awarded the Police Star Medal (3rd highest award) for his bravery in the line of duty. He received his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice in 2008 and began attending Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree.

Alex completed his Basic Peace Officers certificate, Advanced Peace Officer certificate, and Master Peace Officer certificate. He continues to serve the community off duty by helping in coaching youth baseball. He assists with local high school Criminal Justice Clubs and school presentations.

Alex and his wife are the proud parents of three sons.

He is a Bilingual marketing and communications expert offering more than 10 years of experience in affluent, mass market, Hispanic, small business, and commercial banking areas. He has had the pleasure of working in various industries such as Education, Ad Agency, Retail, and Banking.

His many skills and talents fall under Brand, Advertising and Merchandise Management, Creative and Art Direction, Trademarks, Event Planning and Sponsorships, Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery, plus Communications and Public Relations.

His accomplishments have been outstanding and intriguing. He recently invited the Mayor of the largest city in Alabama to a fundraiser that supported the LGBTQ community which is masterful and risqué for a city in the South.

Through the several organizations that he has served in the community, Robert’s marketing and communications talents and skills have been used in the education/university, banking, judicial, event/festival, government, and political spectrums.

He is a strong advocate for the Arts, LGBTQ, and Hispanic community in the State of Alabama where he currently resides. His involvement includes celebrating culture and art as the Communications Director for Alabama’s annual Día de los Muertos Festival. In addition, he is a member of the only Hispanic Business Council in the state of Alabama and participates in various volunteer opportunities in the community such as Junior Achievement, NBA Cares, and Teaching Children to Save.

On his spare time, Robert also speaks with local university students at the University of Alabama and University of Alabama-Birmingham where he shares his experiences and motivates them to succeed.

Robert’s loving family consists of two brothers and three sisters (Jose Luis, Veronica, Maribel, Enrique and Leonela). His mother and father are Jose Luis and Leticia Hernandez who proudly spoil twenty grandchildren. In addition, Robert states that he has a second family that consists of close friends in Texas and Alabama.

A.J. Mayers United South High School Class of 2005 I was born and raised in Laredo, TX by Anthony and Ruth Mayers.

Much of my upbringing was surrounded by the wildlife and ranching community of Laredo. While I admire and appreciate the uniqueness of that upbringing today as I came from a family of ranchers, when I was a child I wanted something more. I dreamt of the big city and the world of media and entertainment. At six years old I began scribing in notebooks ideas and stories, which would lead to my passion for writing and the hopes of one day authoring my own books. When I became a teenager, my passion for storytelling evolved into filmmaking.

I took a trip to Los Angeles to visit my grandfather who had moved out west to care for my great aunt. My first taste of Hollywood showed me that this is where I wanted to end up. I wanted to work in film and bring my dreams into reality. My time in high school was plagued with ups and downs. I always felt different and as if I did not fit in to any particular group. I pushed my creative side as much as possible and kept my grades up because it would lead me to Austin, TX where I attended film school at the University of Texas as a Longhorn. I was anxious to leave Laredo, not because I wanted to abandon my home, but because my dreams were elsewhere and obtainable far, far away.

I became the man I am today in Austin. College life treated me well and I became involved in various organizations and took on some amazing internships with Austin Studios, The CW and MTV. While at UT, I auditioned and was cast to guest VJ on MTV’s morning music

video countdown show “The Big Ten.” This lead me to my MTV internship and to networking with producers, which then lead to getting my first job the summer I moved to LA (without a job) at the network. I even landed a part-time internship doing social media for Nestle Butterfinger, which garnered me airtime press on ABC News. MTV was amazing. I worked with the biggest names in the music and film business. I attended the Video Music and Movie Awards. I spent an entire year getting my real-life industry experiences and a few credits on TV shows. Then after a year I was laid off from MTV as such was the climate of the economy.

But within the two months of my unemployment I worked freelance for the Wonderful Pistachios campaign and blogger Perez Hilton on their advertisement campaign.

Then came Paramount Pictures. It was my dream studio and job. I went in for various interviews and landed my first job working for an executive in the marketing department.

My time spent at Paramount has been fulfilling. I’ve worked on over 40 major films from Transformers, Star Trek, Mission Impossible, Thor, Captain America, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Anchorman 2 to name a few. I’ve interacted with talent such as Michael Bay, Katy Perry, and Tom Cruise. I’ve grown in my position at Paramount and have been an employee for nearly four years. Today I work with the international theatrical marketing team. During my run at Paramount, I’ve also maintained a second job as an author and have published a sci-fi trilogy book series available on eBook, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble both domestic and internationally. I am currently set to publish my fourth novel (a crime drama) titled Black Sheep’s Meadow in summer 2014. The trilogy series has won me the award of “Laredo’s Outstanding Son” from the mayor and city council. I’m the 2nd person in the history of Laredo to receive this prestigious award.

Balancing two jobs and maintaining wonderful networks in L.A. has been a challenge, but nothing was handed to me. I had to work for everything and make my way in a city of millions. There’s much more I plan to do with my career and future. For now this is only the beginning. Life has not always been red carpets, movie premieres, and glamorous…it has been hard work and pushing myself while sometimes sacrificing and taking risks.

Arturo Ramirez United South High School Class of 1999 Arturo Ramirez III, a product of UISD schools, entered United South High School in 1995, where he quickly stood out for his athletic abilities. By the time of his graduation in 1999, he had received All City and All-District Honors for football his junior and senior year and was state ranked in the 200 meter as well as 100 meter dash. Fifteen years later, Ramirez still holds the school’s records in the 100 meter and 200 meter dash as well as in the long jump field event. Upon graduation, he attended Sul Ross State University where he began working towards his chosen career. His career took off in 2002, when he went through the Border Patrol Academy; he has been an agent for twelve years now. For the first ten years, he was stationed in Hebbronville, Texas. Five of those

She attended and graduated from United South High School in 1996. Dr. Zaragoza attended Texas A&M International University in Laredo, Texas. She graduated at the top of her class with a bachelor’s degree in both mathematics and biology in the year2000. After graduation, Dr. Zaragoza attended the University of Texas Health Science Center Dental School at San Antonio. After earning her Doctor of Dental Surgery, she returned to Laredo where she knew health professionals were in demand. Dr.

In 2012, he transferred to the Laredo South Station where he served as an ATV instructor. Currently, he is working as a Task Force Agent with the Department of Justice. At a young age, Ramirez began giving of his time; first, as a Special Olympics Volunteer, and later, upon becoming a father, volunteering as a Pop Warner Coach and Track Coach at Salinas Elementary. His greatest community service effort, however, stems from his playing on the US Consulate Football Team in international charity football games against semi-pro teams from Mexico, in an effort to raise money for battered women’s shelters and child advocacy centers. Through his involvement in this, in 2009, Ramirez soon came to be one of the founders of Brushdogs Football Inc., a non-profit charity which has helped raise money for Laredo and area organizations such as Border Region MHMR Special Olympic Athletes, Border Area Youth Football League and Wings of Laredo which assists breast cancer patients.

Ramirez’ love of sports has essentially parlayed into a greater good. His passion for sports, his humility and compassion for others are what he hopes to pass on to his children, JoEddi, Cindy, Ema and Aiden, with Olivia Ramirez.

Zaragoza worked with Gateway Community Health Center in Laredo where her dental expertise was shared with everyone in the Dental Department.

She worked there for two years before branching out into private practice.

On September 2007, Jovannelly Zaragoza, DDS, became associated with Rolando A. Guerra, Jr., DDS, at Gentle Family Dentistry of Laredo. Dr. Zaragoza and her husband, Adrian Mata have been married for five years.

In addition, Dr. Zaragoza holds certification in the 3M MIDI complete denture implant system and is an active member of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. She is also authorized from the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners to utilize Nitrous Oxide and to administer oral sedation to her pediatric and adult patients when necessary.

Dr. Jovannellly Zaragoza-Mata is a member of the Laredo District Society, Texas Dental Association and the American Dental Association. She will be working towards a Fellowhip in the International Congress of Oral Implantology.

Alejandra Ávila is a third-year student at The University of Texas School of Law in Austin graduating this upcoming May. Born and raised in Mexico, Alejandra moved to Laredo as a sophomore in high school along with her parents and younger brother. An ESL student at Alexander High School, she managed to graduate in the top 5% of her class and participate in numerous athletic and academic programs. Alejandra then joined the TAMIU Honors Program as a President’s Scholar, where she majored in Business Administration and earned a Certification

Kaleb Canales Alexander High School Class of 1996

Born in Laredo, Texas, Kaleb Canales who was a member of the John B. Alexander High School’s first ever graduation class. Upon graduating from AHS, Canales then started his college career in his hometown at the Laredo Community College before transferring to The University of Texas at Arlington where he obtained a degree in kinesiology. While attending UTA, Canales continued to work on his true passion of Basketball as team manager for UTA’s men’s basketball team.

Canales began his coaching career as an assistant coach in 2001 at United High School of Laredo. The following year, Canales became an assistant coach at Martin High School also in Laredo.

In 2003, Canales returned to UT Arlington to be an assistant coach. He later earned a master’s degree in sports leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University.

In 2005, Canales was hired as a video intern for the Portland Trail Blazers, and was eventually hired as the team’s video coordinator. In 2009, he was promoted to an assistant coach for the team. In 2010, Canales served as the Blazers’ head coach during the NBA Summer League.

He was promoted to interim head coach of the Trail Blazers on March 15, 2012. Canales became the youngest active head coach in the NBA and the first Mexican-American coach in NBA history.

At TAMIU, Alejandra studied abroad in China and France, was part of the Women’s Soccer Team, led various student organizations, participated in Model United Nations, and won several awards, including Freshman of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year. She was also a student mentor and participated in numerous community service projects. She graduated first in her class.

Passionate about social justice, Alejandra decided to attend law school. At UT Law, she has worked in various courts, clinics, and government institutions, including: the White House, the Department of Justice, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, the Texas Supreme Court, and the UT Immigration and Transnational Worker Rights Clinics. Alejandra has also worked as a legal research assistant, volunteered with several non-profits, and participated in Georgetown Law’s Visiting Program in Washington D.C. She has completed over 90 pro bono hours through numerous projects, generally benefiting the Latino community in South Texas. She was also recently awarded UT Law’s Public Service Graduating Student Award because of her contributions to the public interest field. She is particularly interested in civil rights, border issues, and public policy.

After law school, Alejandra will be clerking for a federal district judge in the Southern District of Texas. She aspires to become a litigator and hopes to pursue a career in public service.

Canales remained with the team as an assistant during the 2012–2013 Season. On May 3, 2013, Canales accepted an assistant coaching job with the Dallas Mavericks.

Canales is also Founder and President of Assist 13 Foundation, based in Laredo, Texas. Assist 13’s Mission is to serve, contribute and develop youth, which focuses not only on Basketball Fundamentals, but stressed the importance of Teamwork, Commitment and Leadership. Through these core principles, the foundation strives to create outlets that promote and reward academic excellence, leadership development and positive attitude behavior. Assist 13’s goal is to see the children of these programs, successfully develop life winning habits. Our team has the highest expectations and confidence in the youth of our community, and are committed providing the highest level of Education through sports.

This Foundation has given Kaleb Canales and his organization the opportunity to give back to the City of Laredo by bringing home two weeks of basketball camps every summer. He is very grateful to all the Coaches, friends and family that help along the way to make this possible and reality for the youth of Laredo.

Kaleb keeps his Mentors, Coaches, youth of Laredo sports and future athletes in mind everyday. He has a lot of love and appreciation for this city.

Canales’ success truly reflects on his upbringing by both his parents- Victor Canales and Alicia Canales; who still hold him and sister Chantal to these standards...“This is the way we’re going to function as a family. Priscilla Ann Hernandez Alexander High School Class of 2001 Priscilla Ann Smith-Hernandez is currently employed as a police officer for the City of Laredo.

Priscilla was a student athlete at John B. Alexander High School, and graduated in 2001. Due to her academic distinguished achievement, she attended Laredo Community College during her junior year of high school. She transferred thirty-four credit hours to Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. There she became an active member of Lambda Alpha Epsilon’s (American Criminal Justice Association) local chapter, and placed third in Women’s Physical Agility (21 years and younger) during regional competition. On December 2003, she graduated Magna Cum Laude and received her Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, with a major in Law Enforcement.

Priscilla returned back to her home town, as she wanted to make a difference in her community. On December 2004, after completing the Laredo Police Academy, she accepted the Police

Her “can do” attitude coupled with her faith, have allowed her to relentlessly pursue her dreams and attain them! She attributes the strong educational foundation and the extracurricular leadership opportunities afforded to her at Newman Elementary, Clark Elem. CSBS,UMS, and John B. Alexander Health Magnet School as the catalyst for her continued education and leadership.

Upon graduating from John B. Alexander in May of 1999, Anissa entered Texas A & M University in College Station where she graduated in 2003 with a B.S. in Community Health with an Emphasis in Biology. The foundational education she received at the J. B. Alexander Health Magnet followed by her Bachelor degree ensured that she was well prepared and had met the prerequisites for the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio-Physician Assistant Studies Program, a goal Anissa had set while a sophomore in high school. Grace Marie Snyder-Garza, MD Alexander High School Class of 2001 Grace was born February 17, 1984 to Robert R. and Leticia G. Snyder. Spending her whole childhood in Laredo alongside her brother Robert R. Snyder II, she attended United Day Elementary School and Clark Middle School. Grace attended J. B. Alexander High School from 1997-2001. She was a prominent member of the Alexander Band and placed in the Texas State Orchestra as a flautist in her Junior and Senior years. After high school, Grace initially attended the University of North Texas in pursuit of a music degree with a focus on music education.

Oath of Office to serve and protect the citizens of Laredo. While gaining her law enforcement experience, she decided to further her education and pursue her Master of Public Administration degree. On January 2007, she was admitted to Graduate School at Texas A&M International University.

Priscilla accepted the challenge that each work day was hardly ever a routine. She knew that she would have to be ready to confront danger in the line of duty, in order to preserve life. In 2007, Priscilla was injured in the line of duty and received the Laredo Police Medal of Valor, for the exceptional bravery and courage at the risk of serious injury in a dangerous situation. On October 2009, Texas Governor Rick Perry awarded her the Peace Officer’s Memorial Foundation Medal of Valor during the 33rd annual CLEAT convention. Since her return to patrol duty, she still diligently strives to help crime victims. She also successfully fulfilled the required courses and received her Masters Degree in December 2009. On November 2011, she married her loving and supportive husband, David Hernandez.

Priscilla is an active member of LPOA (Laredo Police Officer’s Association), she reaches out to the community in various ways such as donating toys to the low income families during Christmas. She also enjoys speaking to high school Criminal Justice students, and assisting with presentations and job fairs.

In 2012, Priscilla received the Outstanding Performance Award during the Laredo Police Awards Night.

While at UTHSC in San Antonio, Anissa served as a representative for allied health and PA programs for multiple events, such as, college recruitment events in San Antonio and Laredo, an interviewee by Su Salud, Fox News, a spokesperson for South Texas Academic Rising Scholar program, and an advocate and multicultural liaison for Hispanic students aspiring for a health profession. Anissa continues to advocate and participate in the planning of the recruitment programs located in Laredo and targeted at underserved students of any age. She continues to focus on increasing health care services not only on the South Side of San Antonio but also in her hometown of Laredo by serving as a mentor and preceptor to Laredoans.

Anissa is known as one who has always volunteered for activities and events “beyond what is expected. She was often sought out by faculty and school administration because of her willingness to serve. On graduation, she was recognized by the Physician Assistant faculty and her class peers with the graduating class “Outstanding Service Award.” (Dr. Dennis Blessing) As Dr. William T. Gonzaba states, “the core characteristics that allow one to practice the art of medicine, intellect, compassion, humility, and faith were rooted and cultivated much earlier by her family upbringing, community, and early education that set the foundation for lifelong learning and the selfless service of others.”

Today, Anissa continues to receive accolades and awards from patients and colleagues but she will never forget the many awards that she received as a Dazzler, as a two time UISD International Science Fair Representative and the multitude of academic awards she worked diligently to earn at Alexander High School, these were the ones that gave her the confidence to be anyone she chose to be. Anissa is married to Alexander alumni, Christopher Ramirez and they have one son John Richard and another one on the way. Daily she gives thanks for being able to live her dream and for her many blessings! As Dr. Marilyn Harrington, Ph.D. says “she is a life-changer for those she meets and the epitome of the League of Legends award.”

A change of heart led her to transfer to Johns Hopkins University, after she decided that Medicine was her true calling. It was a fortuitous change of direction as she excelled in her new path and met her lab partner – and future husband, Steve – in Biochemistry.

After graduating with a degree in Biology from Hopkins, Grace went on to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. While in medical school, Grace was able to volunteer her time as a translator for the North Texas Shared Ministries Free Medical Clinic as well as the North Texas Food Bank. She was fortunate enough to travel extensively during these years, including throughout Western Europe, Iceland, Mexico, and Hong Kong. With her sights set on Nephrology, Grace and Steve both “matched” for residency training at the Cleveland Clinic in Internal Medicine and Ophthalmology, respectively.

Grace has since completed her three-year training and is now Board Certified in Internal Medicine. She is completing a Nephrology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic and her husband, Stephen McNutt, is beginning his Ophthalmology practice. The two currently live in Cleveland Heights, Ohio with their family, Peppers, Pancakes and Penny – two cats and a dog.

They look forward to completing their training, adding to their family (maybe a less furry addition) and moving back to Laredo to practice.

A proud 2006 graduate of Lyndon B. Johnson High School, Cynthia Marie De Hoyos or Cindy is a Licensed Athletic Trainer at her own alma matter since 2011. She participated in extracurricular activities such as track and field, cheerleading, and National Honor Society. During her senior year in high school, she was the first to proudly represent LBJ in the Princess Pocahontas court.

Yuriria Lara LB Johnson High School Class of 2007 A respectable Lyndon B. Johnson High School graduate of 2007, Yuriria Lara, known by most as “Yuri”, is a second year Physical Education teacher and coach for Salvador Garcia Middle School. Ms. Lara credits her Alma Matter for providing her with outstanding coaches/mentors and knowledgeable teacher who provided an exceptional educational experience that has aided her throughout her life and career.

Ms. Lara’s involvement with sports blossomed at a very young age when father and uncle introduced her to her first sport, soccer, at the age of four. As a result, Ms. Lara became a competitive individual who is seen by her peers not only as an athlete but as a book worm, an animal enthusiast, and a comedian, often trying to break the ice or put a smile on people’s faces.

Involvement with sports became fruitful throughout her high school years. Ms. Lara, as a freshman, was chosen to be a part of the varsity squad for volleyball, basketball, soccer

Andres A. Rubio LB Johnson High School Class of 2006 Being born and raised in las colonias, outskirt subdivisions, and being a member of a migrant family was no easy task. I come from a low income family that goes up north to work in the crop fields. I was one of the few who came back late during the school year but yet still managed to catch up with the rest of my classmates and graduate among the top ten students at Lyndon B. Johnson High School in May 2006. I dedicated my life to my education in order to become someone. My parents were a great influence by supporting me in every decision I made. I achieved several academic and personal goals during university years.

I started off at Texas A&M International University where I was involved in several organizations. I was the vice-president for College Assistance Migrant Program-Organization of Students, the president for Society of Engineers at TAMIU. Then I transferred to Texas A&M University-Kingsville to finish my degree in civil engineering.

I was the president of the American Society of Civil Engineers TAMUK chapter. I was a member of the Chi Epsilon Honor Society and Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Societies. I was also a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, Society of Hispanic Professional

After graduating high school she attended the University of the Incarnate Word where she received her bachelors degree from a CAATE Accredited program for Athletic Training and a minor in psychology in 2010. During her course work at Incarnate Word she was able to work with a variety of sports at different schools. She did volunteer work at the John Newcomb Tennis Factory Camp in New Braunfels, Texas as well as the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation Games of Texas in San Antonio. She was also very fortunate to work with Universal Cheerleading Association as an Athletic Trainer where she traveled to different states and worked in a variety of cheerleading camps.

She is looking forward to continuing her education by pursuing a Masters degree in Athletic Training. With the continuous support of her husband, Abraham Rocha, and with the arrival of their first daughter in August, she will continue to grow professionally to give back and contribute to the community by encouraging other students to pursue their educational goals beyond high school.

I have volunteered in the Bigger Event for two consecutive years which is a cleanup

event around Kingsville, Texas. I have helped out on the Karankawa Boy Scout Camp surveying project in Mathis, Texas. I volunteered as a judge in the Robotics Competition, Girl Scout Engineering Day, and Engineering Day. My life challenges pushed me into becoming what I am now and what I am going to become in the near future. It wasn’t an easy task but with the guidance of others, I have accomplished many great things.

She received many high honors as a result from her hard work in sports such as: defensive player of the year (soccer), First team all district (soccer), New comer of the year (soccer), Honorable mention (Volleyball and basketball), second team all district (volleyball). Ms. Lara graduated as Salutatorian of her class and was accepted to Texas A&M University to further pursue her education.

While at the university, Ms. Lara was involved with the Philippine Student Association( PhilSA) as a member for three years and an officer for one year; her position was Sports Coordinator. Her duties were as follows: setting up practices for intramural games, finding venues and referees for GoodPhil games and Isang Mahal events, along with working concessions. In addition, Ms. Lara volunteered in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) sporting events: NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships and NCAA Swimming and Diving National Championships. Academically, a very prestigious accolade was earning the right to be a part of the Dean’s list for 3 years. Upon graduation from Texas A&M University, Ms. Lara obtained her Bachelor of Science in Sport Management along with two minors Coaching and Tourism Management.

In her spare time, Ms. Lara enjoys reading adventure books and volunteering her time to help out with any events such as, Relay for Life, Mud Run, Special Olympics, and donating food to PhilSA. Ms. Lara is the daughter of Maria De Lourdes and Francisco Roberto Lara, who are very dedicated parents for their children’s success in the future. Ms. Lara is the older sister of Francisco Roberto Lara Jr. and Ricardo Vidal Lara, who are also graduate of Lyndon B. Johnson High School.

A graduate of Lyndon B. Johnson Class of 2006, Rosalinda S. Torres is a Mental Health Therapist for Otis R. Bowen Center. Upon her graduation, Ms. Torres accepted a scholarship from the University of St. Francis in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Ms. Torres completed her Bachelor’s Degree in 2010, with distinguished awards additional honors include Dean’s list and being featured in The Greater Fort Wayne Business Weekly. Ms. Torres throughout her undergrad at the University of St. Francis worked at her school library and volunteered for Alzheimer and Down syndrome walks for research. She also participated in the Psychology Club in which she received a Leadership Award. As a member of The Psychology Club she dedicated her time at nursing homes, making valentines for veterans, and adopting families for Christmas time. Upon graduation Ms. Torres was accepted to the graduate program for a Master in Mental Health Counseling at the University of St. Francis.

Ms. Torres continued her education to obtain her Master’s at the University of Saint Francis. During her first year of graduate school she worked full time at a non-profit organization with youth after school to assist them in therapeutic activities and educational support. She also worked part time at a jewelry store while maintaining a full course load for her graduate program. During her second year as a full time graduate student, Ms. Torres continued her classes, gained full-time employment at local non-profit organization focusing on the rehabilitation of adolescent sexual offenders and began her internship assisting adults with severe mental health concerns. In Ms. Torres final year of her graduate program, she began a new internship in private practice that focused on play therapy with children with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and psychological testing. She then began working and interning at the Otis R Bowen Center, where she is currently employed. Through her experiences she was trained in Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Brief Therapy. Upon her completion of her final internship, Ms. Torres graduated in 2013 with a Master’s in Mental Health Counseling and received a Leadership and Service Award for Graduate Psychology and Academic Excellence in Clinical Mental Health. Her employer promoted her to a Mental Health Therapist upon her graduation.

Ms. Torres is currently working towards her licensure and is under the supervision of a licensed therapist. She assists families, children, individuals, child service cases, and probation cases. Ms. Torres was a presenter for the Hispanic community to encourage adolescents to continue their education. Ms. Torres was later asked to join the Hispanic Education board and hopes to volunteer more of her time to the community. Ms. Torres loves what

Engineers, and Mexican American Engineering and Scientists. I competed four times in the Student Steel Bridge Competition and competed four times on the Concrete Canoe Competition. I was awarded the American Society of Civil Engineers-Outstanding Civil Engineering Student Award.

I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in May 2011. I decided to further my education and graduated with a Master of Science in Civil Engineering in December 2012 from Texas A&M University-Kingsville. I passed my Fundamentals of Engineering Exam and became an Engineer-In-Training.

I worked as a summer intern at the City of Laredo Utilities Department where I took my first glance at what civil engineering was all about. The projects mainly consisted of water and sewer pipe installation. I was out in the field doing construction inspections and running tests. I also worked as a summer intern with the Texas Department of Transportation Laredo District-Design Section. There I learned about road design, bridge maintenance, and project management.

My first civil engineering part time job was as an inspector for Russell Veteto Engineering, Inc. in Corpus Christi, Texas. There I worked myself up to a full time position as a Graduate Engineer. I applied the theory about structures that I obtained at TAMUK. On a daily basis I was doing calculations for steel, concrete, and lumber structures. I was involved in the project management, project scoping, construction inspections, and design.

I became involved with the ASCE Corpus Christi professional chapter. I was given the title of Younger Member Chair. One of my duties was to get more young engineers involved with the organization to create networking. Working for RVE, Inc. was a great experienced which made me a more dedicated, responsible, and trustworthy individual.

My heart and mind were set to come back to Laredo and serve my community. I searched for an opportunity and finally found one. I was hired by Civil Engineering Con-

Angelita Treviño Clair LB Johnson High School Class of 2005

complete 4 years of sea duty onboard the USS Oakhill LSD-51 Amphibious Ship located in its homeport- Norfolk, VA. While onboard, I received many awards and recognitions for different trainings and tasks, which included two Navy and Marine Corps Medals (NAM). This medal is the highest non-combat recognition, awarded for heroism by the United States Navy and Marine Corps. One of the medals was presented to me after giving medical aid to a fellow shipmate who made the choice of committing suicide by shooting a bullet to his head. It was by far one of the hardest things I had ever encountered.

During those 4 years of active duty, I did two tours in South America where the privilege of visiting Copa Cabana-Brazil, Cartagena-Colombia, Montevideo-Uruguay, Punta AltaArgentina, and St. Lucia- a small island in the Atlantic Ocean.

Lastly, during my last year of active duty, I met a wonderful man-Brandon Lee Clair who also happened to be in the service and to whom I am now married to. We dated for a few years before we decided to get married. We now reside in Northwest Indiana. I am studying at Indiana University Northwest where I am pursuing my career in Radiology. As for children, we are planning on expanding our family shortly after I graduate.

Angelita Trevino-Clair. was born in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas Mexico along with my older brother Andres Trevino. By the age of 8, my mother- Sara Rios de Trevino and my father- Jesus Trevino brought us to the United States, which is where I had most of my education. I graduated from Lyndon B. Johnson High School and I am very proud to say that I was part of the first graduating class, which was the class of 2005.

While in school, I was a very active member who participated in school organizations, played sports all year round, and completed community service during the summer at Mercy Hospital. I was a member of the Junior/Senior Class, Hispanic Honor Society, National Honor Society, the Student Council, and a member of the Varsity Softball team for 2 years.

Shortly after graduating, my life took a sharp turn from which I thought was impossible to get out of, but with the help and support of those around me, I managed to overcome those obstacles.

In October 2008, I decided to join the United States Navy. This was the best decision of my life. I completed eight weeks of boot camp training in Great Lakes, IL and followed this with military school (A-school), which was also located in the same city. After graduating from boot camp, I was given orders to complete 4 years in Sea Duty. I was assigned to
