sk Head Coach Max Good the key to a successful college basketball program, he will quickly answer, “players.” When he took over the LMU men’s basketball program three games into the 2008-09 season there were not many to choose from. With just seven scholarship players available, four of which were freshman, Good credited the players for fighting through and getting better each day. “That first season, I’m not sure I have ever seen a harder working team,” said Good. “When you are willing to work like that, day after day, positive things will happen.” Positive things did happen in 2009-10, thanks, in large part, to more players. With more depth and experience, the Lions posted a record setting season a year ago, one that has set the bar high heading into 2010-11. The Lions finished tied for fourth in the West Coast Conference at 7-7 and finished 18-16 overall. It was the most wins since winning 18 in 1996 and the Lions advanced to the postseason for the first time in 20 years. Included in those wins were road victories over Notre Dame and USC, and a win over No. 9 Gonzaga, the highest-ranked win since 1961 and first-ever at Gersten Pavilion. “The key to the turnaround is that we had better players and more of them. There has not been a good team with bad players,” said Good. “Coaches sometimes get aggravated at me when I say this, but coaching can be a little overrated. Obviously, you have to get them to play smart, hard and together, but in the end, you better have

SEASON PREVIEW

quality players.” And that group is back for more. The talent remains in place for the Lions heading into 2010-11. They return 13 from last year’s roster, including four starters, both firstteam All-WCC selections and three on track to join the 1,000-point club. And with it comes new levels of expectations. “We now have experience and depth, and moving forward, it is a question of whether or not they are ready to take the next step in all stages to achieve our goals,” said Good. “We were all left with a bitter taste in our mouth in going 0-1 in the postseason last year. Hopefully that will drive us to take further steps.” Leading the way will be Vernon Teel (Sr., G, 6-4, 190, Jamaica Queens, NY) and Drew Viney (Jr., F, 6-8, 210, Villa Park, CA). Both earned first-team All-WCC honors in 2009-10 as LMU’s one-two scoring punch. In addition to scoring, they did a whole lot more to make them one of the top returning duos in the WCC. Only national player of the year Evan Turner, now in the NBA, averaged more points, rebounds, assists and blocks than Teel, while Viney was fourth in the WCC in both points and rebounds. Also returning from last year’s starting five are Jarred DuBois (Jr., G, 6-3, 180, Los Angeles, CA) and Ashley Hamilton (So., F, 6-7, 210, London, England). Both were WCC All-Freshman selections, with DuBois earning it in 2008-09 and Hamilton last year. Four others return from the Lions’ main rotation in 2009-

10, including Larry Davis (Sr., G, 6-4 ,185, Queens, NY), Tim Diederichs (Jr., F, 6-9, 225, Seattle, WA), Alex Osborne (So., F, 6-6, 240, Los Angeles, CA) and LaRon Armstead (Jr., F, 6-5, 200, Los Angeles, CA). Another key to LMU’s early season rotation in 2009 was redshirt freshman Edgar Garibay (Fr., F, 6-10, 250, Compton, CA). The center served a medical redshirt after an ACL injury took him out for the year in the game against UC Santa Barbara. He played seven games and started four early in the year. He averaged 7.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in those games. In addition to the experienced players returning, the Lions signed a highly rated freshman class to round out the roster. Godwin Okonji (Fr., F, 6-8, 220, Lagos, Nigeria; Findlay Prep – Henderson, NV), Anthony Ireland (Fr., G, 5-10, 175, Winchedon School – Waterbury, CT) and Ayodeji Egbeyemi (Fr., G, 6-4, 205, National Christian Academy – Fort Washington, MD) signed National Letters of Intent to become the Lions’ freshman class heading into 2010-11 season. Good expects all three to compete for time and really give the Lions depth. “All three of our incoming players will challenge the returning players to step-up their game, while also competing for playing time as true freshman,” said Good. With experienced leaders in place and talented freshman coming in, the Lions feel they have the players in place to take the next step.

GODWIN OKONJI

FORWARD • 6-6 • 220 • FRESHMAN - HS • LAGOS, NIGERIA FINDLAY COLLEGE PREP (NV)

BRIEFLY... Godwin Okonji enters his first season of college basketball at LMU... “He has great size and he really uses it well,” says Coach Good. “He developed into a tenacious defender and has started to use his size well in rebounding the ball. We were also very impressed with his leadership and will to win, as shown by the success he had at one of the top programs in the nation...” PRIOR TO LMU... He is a native of Nigeria and graduated from Henderson International High School in Henderson, Nev., before moving cross town to play for Findlay Prep. He was a key player for a Findlay program that won a pair of ESPN Rise national crowns, including in 2009 when the team went unbeaten and finished No. 1 in several of the national polls. Then against Portland, Davis drove the lane and hit a fallaway lay-up once again with six seconds to send the game to overtime. The Lions won both overtime games. LOYOLA MARYMOUNT HEAD COACH

MAX GOOD

THIRD SEASON AT LMU • 19TH SEASON OVERALL

I

f you ask Max Good if he has been around the block in the world of college coaching, be prepared to laugh uncontrollably, blush slightly and become overwhelmed at the number of people that have been touched and positively influenced by the fact that Good has been a basketball coach. Good, who officially took over the program as the 25th coach in school history on Jan. 12, 2009, is in his third season leading the Lions and is no stranger to running a program. This is his 19th season as a head coach at the NCAA level, coaching eight seasons at Bryant College (2001-08) prior to joining LMU. He also coached at UNLV for one season (2000-01) and eight seasons at Eastern Kentucky University (198189). In addition, his impact hasn’t been just at the college level as he was the head coach at the New England prep school Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, Maine, for 10 seasons (1990-00).

Good had an NCAA head coaching record of 241-224 prior to this coming to LMU and now has a record of 263-64 heading into the 2010-11 season. Good coached 28 of the Lions’ 31 games in the 200809 season, filling in for former Head Coach Bill Bayno, who served a leave of absence before resigning due to health issues. Good led the Lions despite a limited roster of just seven healthy scholarship players and a non-conference schedule ranked as high as 47 in the RPI. In year two, it was a different story. The Lions finished Good’s second season at 18-16 overall and tied for fourth in the West Coast Conference at 7-7. It equalled the most wins since the Elite Eight team of 1990. In addition, the team posted its second best turn-around in school history with 15

38

more wins than the year prior (which was also the second-best turn-around in the nation in 2009-10), posted the longest win streak since the 1995-96 season (6 games), defeated their first ranked opponent (#9 Gonzaga) since 1990, posted the program’s first ranked-win at Gersten Pavilion, defeated a top-10 team for the second time in school history (the last being in 1960), and had three players earn postseason All-WCC honors, just the 10th time since 1956 three or more Lions have claimed WCC honors (Viney, Teel and Hamilton). “I have never been a part of a team that flat out refused to quick. Despite all of our issues, they never took the opportunity to feel sorry for themselves or get down,” said Good. “Every day they came to practice and left everything out on the floor. That is why I coach, to be part of young men like that.”

2009-10 IN REVIEW...

SEASON REVIEW A LOOK BACK TO 09-10:

The Lions, who do not feature a senior on the roster; started a freshman, three sophomores and a junior; and have a roster that is ranked 300 out of 343 NCAA Division-I teams in terms of experience, were one of the top turnaround stories of 2009-10, reaching multiple milestones with an overall record of 18-16 and 7-7 in WCC play. The Lions finished the season winning seven of their last 11. Here is what was part of LMU’s 200910 season: • Equaled the most wins (18) since the Elite Eight team of 1989-90, matching 1995-96. • First postseason bid since the 1989-90 season. • Second best turn-around in school history with 15 more wins than a year ago. Second-best turn-around in the nation in 2009-10. • More than triple number of WCC wins (7) than a year ago. • Longest win streak since the 1995-96 season (6 games). • The most non-conference wins since that season (9). • Defeated their first ranked opponent (#9 Gonzaga) since 1990, and first ranked-win at Gersten Pavilion. • Defeated a top-10 team for the second time in school history (the last being in 1960). • Had three players earn postseason All-WCC honors, just the 10th time since 1956 three or more Lions have claimed WCC honors (Viney, Teel and Hamilton).

THE HISTORY

51

THIS IS LMU BASKETBALL

W

ith a basketball history that began in 1906 when Loyola Marymount University was then known as St. Vincent’s College, LMU and former Lions have been at the center of some of college basketball’s brightest moments. From the championship teams and the 1990 Elite Eight run, to the lineage of coaching greats that have worn the Crimson and Navy uniform of the Lions, LMU’s basketball history is a rich one. Already voted by ESPN as one of its top sports moments in the last 30 years, the 1989-90 LMU men’s basketball team will forever be one of college basketball’s historic mile markers. The team that still holds many NCAA offensive records (including 122.4 points per game), went on to the 1990 Elite Eight despite the dealing with the death of Hank Gathers. Then there was his teammate, best friend, honoring him the performances of a lifetime in the NCAA tournament and his left-handed free throws. There was the Lions’ first conference champions in 1961, which included some of the WCAC top players of all-time in Ed Bento (1959-62) and Jerry Grote (1959-62). That team led to some of LMU’s earliest stars in Jim Haderlein (1968-71), one of the greatest rebounders in WCC history with 1,143 career rebounds, and Luther Philyaw (1972-76), one of LMU’s elite scorers with over 1,500 poins. There were the head-turning offenses of the 1980s and early 1990s that produced Gathers, Kimble (1987-90), Jeff Fryer (1987-90), Corey Gaines (198688), Terrell Lowery (1988-92), Forrest McKenzie (198186), Keith Smith (1982-86) and Mike Yoest (1984-88), many of whom are in the top-10 all-time in career scoring at LMU. Can’t forget Pete Newell, perhaps one of the all-time legendary coaches in collegiate basketball history. He was a Lion from 1936-39. Serving as a mentor to many of the current coaching greats, including Bobby Knight, Newell’s teaching of the game of basketball was second to none. Newell led the University of San Francisco to the 1949 NIT championship before moving to the University of

LMU BASKETBALL HISTORY

California. At Cal, he led the Bears to the 1957 NCAA championship and he finished with a career record of 234-123 in 14 seasons as a head coach. He added to his legend when he led the U.S. Olympic Basketball Team to the 1960 Olympic gold medal. Newell, who was inducted into the FIBA Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009, is just one of many former Lions to make an impressive mark in the coaching ranks, one that continues today. Joining Newell as a coach to win a national title from LMU was Phil Woolpert, who played on the same team as Newell. Woolpert led San Francisco to possibly one of the greatest two-year runs in college basketball. He led the Dons to back-to-back NCAA titles in 1955 and 1956, coaching basketball greats Bill Russell and K.C. Jones. In that span they won 60 consecutive games, the second most in NCAA history. Others who starred at LMU from its foundation through the 1980s and 90s that went onto the coaching ranks were Rick Adelman (1965-68), Clete Adelman (1963-66), John Arndt (1947-50), Richard Baker (1953-56), David Benaderet (1954-57), Bill Donovan (1946-50), Gene Pingatore (1955-58), Jim Williamson (1993-97), and Wyking Jones (1991-95), just to name a few. In the growing reach of basketball around the world, the recent history has also produced many players who have gone on to play professional basketball, not only in the NBA but all over the globe. Kimble, Gaines and Peter Cornell (1996-98) have been the most recent to play in the NBA. Gaines started with the Seattle Supersonics, Kimble with the Clippers and Cornell with the Lakers. Overseas, more than a dozen players went on to play multiple years professionally in the last eight years. Those include Chris Ayer (2002-06), Sherman Gay (2000-04) and Matthew Knight (2003-07), all of whom are currently top players in their respective leagues. As the Lions head into a new season, the Lions history continues to be a thriving one in the world of basketball.

LMU ATHLETICS HISTORY

Bo Kimble shot (and made) the first free throw of each 1990 NCAA tournament game with his off-hand - the left - in honor of Hank Gathers. The gesture captured the nation’s attention as the 1990 Lions became one of the original Cinderella stories.

The season included the first game in Alumni Gymnasium, the Lions’ home until the 1981-82 season when the Lions moved to Gersten Pavilion.

RECORD BOOK

Wes Wardrop helps LMU beat Gonzaga

Ashley Hamilton and LMU defeated No. 9 Gonzaga in 2010.

After Jim Haderlein finished in 1971 as the school’s all-time scoring and rebounding leader, Luther Philyaw becomes one of the first four-year stars in LMU history as freshman are finally allowed to play. For over 25 years he held the freshman scoring record and finished with 1,581 points.

THE SYSTEM: Greatest three-year stretch in LMU history produced the highest scoring NCAA D-I teams in college basketball history. Once the Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble era began in 1987, the Lions would go 28-4 and 14-0 in the WCAC that 198788 campaign. They would win in the NCAA tournament first round. In 1989 the Lions went 20-11 and won the WCAC tournament to advance to their second straight NCAA tournament. Then, came the 1989-90 Lions. With over 122 points per game, they captured the nation’s attention. They would advance to the Elite Eight in the memory of Hank Gathers, who died during the WCAC tournament just week’s earlier. Many consider the 1989-90 LMU Lions one of the greatest college basketball moments of all-time.

Paul Westhead is hired as head coach of the men’s basketball team. In his first season, he leads the Lions back to the postseason for the first time since 1980. In 1985, US International and LMU begin a four-year series that would result in the highest scoring games in NCAA history. After defeating USIU 84-65 in January of 1985, the “track meets” would begin. In Westhead’s first season in 1985-86, the Lions would defeat USIU 151-107.

LMU BASKETBALL HISTORY

A year following the Lions’ record breaking year, in which the Lions set some of NCAA’s marks in scoring, LMU set a record that might never be touched in yet another “track meet” against US International. The Lions scored a NCAA record 186 points in their 46-point win, breaking the record of 181 they set two seasons earlier. USI’s Kevin Bradshaw set the scoring record against a Division I opponent with 72 points.

LMU ATHLETICS HISTORY

Staged pair of upsets to advance to WCC tournament semifinals. In 1995, rising up to beat WCC regular season champ and eventual NCAA tournament participant, Santa Clara, in convincing fashion. And then doing it again in 1997. The Lions retire the jersey’s of Hank Gathers (44) and Bo Kimble (30). The only two to have their numbers retired.

The Lions defeated 26th-ranked Gonzaga at Gersten Pavilion 8074. The win ended the Zags nine-game win streak on the season, their 22-game win streak against WCC opponents and a 16-game stint against LMU.

-10 2009

2006

The Lions finish 18-16, go 7-7 in the WCC and advance to the postseason for the first time since 1990. The Lions defeated their first ranked opponent (#9 Gonzaga) since 1990, and first ranked-win at Gersten Pavilion; defeated a top-10 team for the second time in school history (the last being in 1960); defeated Notre Dame and USC on the road.

The Lions earned its highest finish since 1996 and 1992 in the West Coast Conference at second place, advanced to the program’s first WCC Tournament Championship since 1989, had three players earn first-team All-WCC honors (the first time since 1990), and finished with two players selected to the WCC All-Tournament team (first time since 1995).

In his final two seasons, he led the Lions in scoring, finishing his four-year career averaging 18.5 points and ranking second all-time with 2,201 points and tops with 689 assists. Lowery scored more than 40 points six times in his career. Arndt took over for Donovan and won 91 games in seven seasons. Arndt’s 15.7 points per game was his career best in 1949-50. Arndt was the second player in Loyola history to reach 1,000 points in a career.

D

EAN, BRAD - 1972-75 In his first season of play with the Lions’ varsity program as a sophomore, Brad Dean broke into the Lions’ starting lineup and finished with 11.4 points per game. His junior campaign earned him a spot as an honorable mention on the All-WCAC team. Dean and Luther Philyaw led the Lions with 12.6 points per game. Dean saved his best for last, scoring 16.7 points per game, reaching the 1,000-point mark with five games to play in the 1974-75 season. He claimed second team allconference honors in his senior year.

W

ORTHY, BRANDON - 2003-07 Brandon Worthy became the 27th member of the 1,000-point club with his 19-point effort against Saint Mary’s in the WCC Tournament semifinal win on March 5, 2006, his junior season of play. Worthy’s playing career at LMU concluded with 1,255 points, ranking 17th all-time in LMU history. Worthy was also ranked fourth alltime in free thorws made with 437, eighth in assists with 320 and seventh in steals with 157.

Y

OEST, MIKE - 1984-88 Yoest finished his career with 1,601 points and at the time he was ranked fourth all-time in LMU history. He is currently ranked eighth in a career that saw him score 541 points, at the time the 13th best point total in school history. He would break that with 562 the following season. In 1986-87, he would lead the conference in scoring, tied with Pepperdine’s Eric White. During the season, he scored 20 or more points in 14 contests and led the team in steals and blocks.

F

RYER, JEFF - 1986-90 As the Lions’ all-time deep threat, Jeff Fryer was one of the best all-time three-point shooters in school history. Of his 1,922 points, 1,089 of them were scored from the three-point line. He holds seven of the nine three-point records in LMU history, including the 11 three-pointers he hit in the NCAA tournament Second Round win over Michigan in 1990. The 11 threes is an NCAA tournament record. En route to being named to the All-West Region Team and first-team All-WCC, Fryer averaged just under 23 points per game his final two seasons at LMU. HONORING THE LIONS

F

or just the 10th time since LMU joined the West Coast Conference in 1955-56, the Lions have earned at least three postseason honors as voted on by the conference coaches. Drew Viney and Vernon Teel earned firstteam All-WCC honors while Ashley Hamilton earned WCC All-Freshman honors. Viney and Teel become just the 11th LMU duo to take home first-team All-WCC honors, while Hamilton is the fourth Lion to earn freshman honors. Jarred DuBois was an WCC All-Freshman selection a year ago, while the Lions had a trio of players earn All-WCC first-team honors in 2005-06.

Teel had a breakout season with the Lions, averaged 15.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.6 assists in 2009-2010. There was only one other player in Division I basketball who surpassed all three of those figures—2010 Wooden Award Winner, Evan Turner of Ohio State (20.4 points, 9.1 rebounds, 6.0 assists). Hamilton was a force for the Lions and their late season run, averaging 15.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and five blocks while shooting 58.3 percent from the field at the WCC tournament. His hot play continued into the summer, as he played on the British National Team.

THE 1,000-POINT SCORERS 1. Hank Gathers • 1987-90 • 2,490 points

Hank Gathers was only the second player in NCAA history to lead the country in scoring and rebounding in the same season. He finished his junior season with an unheard of 32.7 points per game and 13.7 rebounds per game. Wichita State’s Xavier McDaniel was the first to do the feat in the 1984-85 season. Since the 1989-90 season, only Kurt Thomas of Texas Chrisitian has matched the feat, leading the nation in both categories in 1995. When transferring from USC in 1987, Gathers put up numbers in three years that many dominant four-year starters do not achieve. Gathers was a finalist for the John Wooden Player of the Year Award in his senior season. In addition, he was a second-team All-America selection by the USBWA and NABC, a third-team All-America selection by the AP and an honorable mention by the UPI and Sporting News. He was voted as the West Coast Conference Player of the Decade for the 1980s. Gathers holds nine scoring records at LMU, including career points (2,490), career scoring average (28.0), field goals made in a game (24), season (419) and career (1,037), field goals attempted in a game (37), career field goal percentage (.590), free throws attempted in a season (315) and a career (745), and rebounds in a game (29). Forrest McKenzie is the only Lion to earn All-WCC honors all four years of his career. McKenzie, who was drafted in the third round by the San Antonio Spurs (48th pick overall), led the Lions in scoring his freshman and junior seasons. In his final three seasons, McKenzie averaged more than 20 points per game to finish his four-year career with 18.7 points per game. He finished his career as the first player in school history to score 2,000 points. Matthew Knight was a two-time first-team All-West Coast Conference performer and finished his LMU career as one of the top players in program history. He finished his career with 1,466 points and 743 rebounds. Knight is just one of five players in LMU history to rank in the top-10 in both scoring and rebounds, and he is the latest Lion to reach 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in his career. The four-year career of Knight was defined by the double-double. Overall, he had two as a sophomore in 2004-05, then broke out for 17 in 2005-06. He has six his final season for 25 total, ranking fifth all-time in LMU history. The 5-10 guard from Torrance, Calif., is one of just three players in LMU history to reach 1,000-point and 500-assist (Terrell Lowery & Keith Smith) plateau. A two-time All-WCC selection, Williamson was second in the conference in scoring with 16.4 points per game and assists with 5.0 per game in his senior season. Williamson also was a buzzer-beater. In his four years, Williamson knocked down three shots at the buzzer to give the Lions wins. He was the last player to earn WCC Player of the Week honors twice in the same season. Williamson did it his junior season. His first season at LMU earned him Freshman of the Year honors in the WCC. Williamson graduated in 1997 and is currently the head coach of Loyola High School in LA. Year GP-GS FG-FGA Pct. 3FG-3FA Pct. FT-FTA Pct. Reb-Avg. PF-D Ast.-Avg. 22. Steve Smith • 1971-73 • 1,109 points

Steve Smith was one of the Lions’ most prolific scorers in school history and he did it in just two seasons. Smith, one of just two players to reach 1,000 points in a two-season career (Jim McCloskey), scored 1,109 points in only 51 games to finish with a 21.7 points per game average. He is only one of eight players to have back-to-back seasons scoring more than 500 points. In an era where the scoring was lower across the nation, Smith scored more than 35 percent of the Lions’ points in his two seasons. To put it in to perspective, the Lions’ all-time leading scorer, Hank Gathers, in 1988-89 averaged 32.7 points per game, less than 27 percent of the Lions’ 122 points per game average. THE 500-REBOUND CLUB 1. Jim Haderlein • 1968-71 • 1,161 rebounds

Jim Haderlein was ahead of his time in shattering LMU’s career rebounding mark that was set in 1962 by Ed Bento. In celebrating the 30th anniversary of the record setting season (his final season was in 1971), Haderlein is the only player to average double-figure rebounds in each of his seasons at Loyola. Haderlein set the record in his first game of his senior season, and used the rest of that 15 rebounds-a-game season to pad his record. Hank Gathers, who sits at second all-time, led the entire nation in rebounds as a junior in 1988-89 with 13.7 per game. Haderlein’s best season was also as a junior, averaging 17 per game (a school record). He is the only Lion to break the 1,000 mark in rebounds in his career. Haderlein, who is also on the 1,000-point list at LMU, was the Lions’ first true threat on all ends of the court. Armstrong sat second all-time on the rebound list for three seasons before Gathers moved into second in the 1989-90 season. Bento finished his career fourth all-time with 774 rebounds. He averaged 10 per game in his career, including 10.9 in his senior campaign. Bento, who also finished with 1,432 points, was a first-team all-conference selection in his final season. Loyola’s 30-18 victory in the 1940-41 season is the first recorded game between the two universities who sit no more than 15 miles apart from another down Highway One on the Pacific Coast. Pete Newell and Phil Woolpert, both of whom won national championships as coaches, played for the Lions. THE BIGGEST GAMES Sophomore Jarred DuBois took a perfect pass from junior Larry Davis with eight seconds remaining to lift LMU to an 87-85 win over Notre Dame at Purcell Pavilion in Notre Dame, Ind. The Lions picked up road wins in both the Pacific-10 (USC on Nov. 21) and the Big East, and earn their first win over a current member from the Big East since 1988. Down by one, 85-84, the Lions’ defense forced a five-second call with 19 seconds remaining. After a timeout, the Lions rotated the ball and Davis drove the lane, dishing off to DuBois on the left wing. With a defender charging, DuBois buried his fourth three-pointer of the game for the win. Notre Dame went on to advance to the NCAA tournament that season.

LOYOLA MARYMOUNT 111, NEW MEXICO STATE 92 March 16, 1990 - NCAA Tournament First Round - Long Beach, CA In the memory of their fallen teammate Hank Gathers, the Lions entered the NCAA tournament with emotional baggage most teams don’t even think about carrying into the biggest games, not to mention the “Big Dance.” However, the nation’s leading scorer, Bo Kimble, took over after a jittery half that showed the emotional exhaustion suffered by the Lions in a 46-46 deadlock at halftime. Kimble finished the game with 45 points and 18 rebounds to upset New Mexico State in the first round of the NCAA tournament. LOYOLA MARYMOUNT 149, MICHIGAN 115 March 18, 1990 - NCAA Tournament Second Round - Long Beach, CA No one thought LMU had a prayer against the defending national champions in the University of Michigan. However, the Lions, according to many newspaper and magazine headlines, “Gather-ed” themselves to shock the world in a 149-115 victory putting the Lions into the Sweet 16. As was a trademark under coach Paul Westhead, the Lions’ 149 points set an NCAA Championship record for points in a game. LOYOLA MARYMOUNT 186, US INTERNATIONAL 140 Jan. 5, 1991 - Gersten Pavilion Los Angeles, CA Yes, the score is correct. And the dust from that game has yet to settle and might never. The 186 points by the Lions is an NCAA record, as is the 72 points scored against a Division I opponent by USI’s Keith Bradshaw. All but one player on the Lions’ 10-man roster scored in double figures, Bradshaw was 23 of 59 from the field and the next

leading scorer for USIU had 20 points. LOYOLA MARYMOUNT 71, NEW MEXICO STATE 69 Nov. 17, 2006 - Gersten Pavilion Senior Brandon Worthy hit an off-balanced three-pointer with 0.9 seconds remaining (pictured above) to lift the Lions to a 71-69 come-from-behind win over New Mexico State in front of 3,570 at Gersten Pavilion during homecoming. Worthy led the Lions with 28 points as the Lions erased a 17-point second half deficit for the win. The shot would go on to be the top play on ESPN.The performance by Worthy could be summed up like this - after putting up a career-high 28 points with eighth rebounds, two assists and two steals in 37 minutes while both calves were cramping - a young boy clad in New Mexico State gear asked the fifth-year senior for an autograph telling him he had a new fan. LOYOLA MARYMOUNT 87, NOTRE DAME 85 Dec. 12, 2009 - Purcell Pavilion Notre Dame, IN

LOYOLA MARYMOUNT 74, NO. 9 GONZAGA 66 Feb. 18, 2010 - Gersten Pavilion Considered on of the biggest wins in program history and the biggest at Gersten Pavilion, the Lions earned a 7466 win over West Coast Conference leader and top-10 Gonzaga in front of 3,770 at Gersten Pavilion on Feb. 18. Gonzaga entered the game ranked 13th by the Associated Press and 9th by the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll. It was the first ever win over a ranked opponent at Gersten Pavilion and the highest ranked team to fall to the Lions since 1961. Ashley Hamilton led all scorers with 17 points, adding six rebounds and three blocks. Drew Viney added 16 points and 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Defense was the key as the Lions erased a 10-point first-half deficit by holding the Zags to just 34.4 percent shooting in the game and just 25.9 percent in the second half. The Lions shot 46.6 percent for the game, hitting 6-for-12 from the three-point line. It was the Bulldogs lowest shooting percentage since Duke on Dec. 19 when they shot 27.8 percent.

RIGHT PLACE. RIGHT TIME.

M

aybe that we’re the only Catholic University in Los Angeles and one of the world’s renowned Jesuit institutions, a group that includes 28 universities in the United States and over 100 schools worldwide. Or, maybe, it is that Loyola Marymount University has been called a Hidden Gem by the Washington Post and ranked among the Best in the West by U.S. News & World Report. Or that our serene campus, overlooking Marina del Rey, offers one of the most exhilarating academic locations anywhere. Or that our five colleges, all connected to Los Angeles, enable students to make current contacts in technology, business, politics, art, music, and naturally, the entertainment industry. Yet there’s something more to consider. If you’re looking for a place to acquire facts and skills that will help you get along in the world, you have many choices. But if you’re looking for a place where God fits in, a place that honors faith as well as reason, Loyola Marymount University may be the place for you. At LMU, we inspire you to take ideas apart and learn how they fit together. You’ll test your limits, forge enduring friendships, promote justice and become a contributing citizen of the world. Our curriculum is broad and deep. Our pace is demanding. Our expectations are high. Our plans are ambitious. And we’re looking for curious, accomplished, enterprising, visionary students to make this their right time and their right place.

T

he Chronicle of Higher Education notes that at Jesuit institutions, this precept “translates into a large amount of individual attention from faculty members and accessibility to high-level administrators, including the president.” At LMU, students don’t simply benefit from cura personalis; they practice it, too, carrying out the Jesuit ideal of “men and women for others.” The Marymount sisters contribute a history of educating women and teaching through the arts, with a deliberately international perspective that encourages respect for all cultures. LMU brings these gifts together in seven colleges: • Business Administration • Communications and Fine Arts • Film and Television • Liberal Arts • Science and Engineering • School of Education • Loyola Law School

INSIDE THE LIONS: William H. Hannon Library is newest crown jewell to LMU. The 88,000-square foot library was completed in 2009 and is home to more than 444,200 books and 99,383 bound periodicals.

A SOLID FOUNDATION UNIVERSITY MISSION AND IDENTITY

L

oyola Marymount’s Mission and Goals Statement, approved by the Board of Trustees in 1990, succinctly states in its preamble the university’s three-fold mission:

* The encouragement of learning * The education of the whole person * The service of faith and the promotion of justice These often quoted phrases are at the heart of the campus community’s communal self-understanding. When unpacked, they tell us much about LMU’s identity as a Catholic, Jesuit/Marymount university.

INSIDE THE LIONS: LMU sits on a bluff that provides some of the best views in all of Southern California. From the edge of campus, one can see from Catalina Island, all the way to Downtown Los Angeles and beyond to the San Bernardino Mountains.

DEVELOP THE WHOLE PERSON IT’S WHO YOU ARE WITH hen it comes to providing friends and mentors, you won’t find a university surpassing LMU. The campus population comes from all 50 states and 70 countries. Better still, LMU offers more than 140 extracurricular organizations that hone the students’ skills and help them find like-minded colleagues for life. Whatever the religious belief, the university pays attention to individual spirit. “I’ve thought a lot about what makes my friends at college different than those from high school, and I’ve realized that the people at LMU live up to the mission of being men and women for others,” said a sophomore. Students are free to examine faith in social or service activities.

W

IT’S WHERE YOU LIVE Every fall, nine out of 10 first-year students take advantage of LMU housing and for

some very good reasons. Some of the benefits of LMU living are simple: an active social scene, meal plans that allow students to dine at various campus locations, and easy access to classes and campus facilities. But university housing offers much more than simple convenience, it also gives students an edge. As a resident, students are immediately plugged into programs that help them achieve better grades, meet new friends, develop professional contacts and graduate in a timely manner. At LMU, we know that everything you do - including where you live - shapes the person you’re becoming. So LMU offers themed living communities where you pursue your education in a social context that’s relevant to you. Here, you live and learn in an environment that promotes reflection and character development, where your values are celebrated, challenged, shared.

IT’S WHERE YOU’RE BOUND “We’re trying to get rid of you,” said professor Kelly Younger, who directs the Honors Program, likes to tell LMU students. He’s referring to the study abroad opportunities, scholarships, internships, academic conferences and competitions that take students off campus and into the world. When it comes time to graduate, students will have the knowledge, the confidence, and the strength of spirit to achieve anything the students can imagine. To help you toward your ideal career, LMU offers a network of loyal alumni. “Even the summer after graduation, I am already aware of the benefits that LMU alumni networking offers,” says a new alum. “When we leave the undergraduate family, it’s as if we graduate into an even larger family that offers constant support.”

INSIDE THE LIONS: The sunken gardens is at the center of LMU and is the hub of activity, including home to more than 10,000 that attend graduation each May.

I

t is talked about, its in all the literature. More importantly it is practiced. LMU and the Athletics Department is alla bout developing the whole person. Part of that experience is reaching out beyond the boarders of just LMU. At the end of summer 2010, the LMU basketball team went on an 11day trip to Spain. It was an experience that included everything from culture to basketball to the historical roots of St. Ignatious and the foundation of the Jesuit traditions Loyola Marymount is founded. • • • • • • • • • •

art of the Lions’ experience in Madrid was the opportunity to attend a practice of Team USA men’s basketball as they prepared for the 2010 FIBA World Championships. Team USA was in Madrid playing Spain before heading to Turkey for the World Championships. Team USA would beat Spain in the exhibition and then not lose in the World Championships to take home the title and an automatic bid to the 2012 Olympics. Following the practice, both teams had the opportunity to meet one another.

LMU CARES

LMU Cares is the ongoing community service project of the LMU men’s basketball team, continuing the mission of LMU of developing the whole person and reaching out to the community and to the world. “LMU Cares has become a big part of our program,” said Associate Head Coach Myke Scholl, who organizes the Lions’ community service project and started LMU Cares in 2008-09. “One of the core missions of LMU is the development of the whole person and a big part of that is serving the world. We have developed great partnerships with this program, and we look forward to grow this program each and every year.”

STUDENT LIFE

Here are some of those partnerships: PROJECT KNAPSACK Project Knapsack is a non-profit organization that connects kids globally through its international pen pal exchange. In 2008, over 600 public and private school students in the Untied States exchanged letters with students in Zambia, Afrida. LMU’s participation is designed to link elementary school students in Inglewood and Lennox with primary school students in Lusaka, Zambia and Soweto, South Africa to exchange ideas and life experiences. The program build skills in the areas of reading, writing, geography, spelling, grammar and penmenship. LMU men’s

basketball players will then assist the students in Inglewood and Lennox in writing the letters to their pen pals in Zambia and South Africa. Since the program began, the Lions have expanded the partnership to include students from Jefferson Elementary School in Lennox, Calif., as well as an outreach to the Molalatladi Primary School and Nkosi’s Haven orphanage in Johannesburg, South Africa. The LMU Cares has helped raise over $15,000 to purchase schools supplies and other educational and technological resources for our sister school in Africa.

ship that helps them attend college or vocational school. HOLIDAY HOPE INITIATIVE The LMU men’s basketball program, players and staff, will visit an orphanage in Compton and a homeless shelter in South Central Los Angeles to instill hope in residents over the holidays. Service is not limited to just men’s basketball efforts alone. Members of the men’s basketball team, along with fellow student-athletes at LMU involved with the S.A.A.C. (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee), have already reached out to local entities. On September 28, 2008, more than 90 of LMU’s student-athletes participated in a Kentwood Elementary School cleanup. The cleanup was organized with the local Elementary school as a part of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee’s (SAAC) new “Lions in Action” program. The new program is designed to increase student-athlete involvement in the community. Athletes worked with the PTA and parents to improve Kentwood’s landscape, build new flower beds, and transport trees in an effort to beautify the school grounds. Kentwood Elementary was extremely grateful for the help and are looking forward to working with the student-athlete volunteers again in the near future. In the coming weeks, the studentathletes will continue their work as a part of “Lions in Action,” preparing meals for Path’s Soup Kitchen and cleaning up the newly adopted LMU student-athlete beach.

HISTORY OF CHAMPIONS

2000s

1900s

F 1930s

1940s

rom the very beginning, LMU has extablished a history of champions. In the 1930s it was three straight ice hockey championships. In the 1940s the legendary Pete Newell played for the Lions and the rivalry with Pepperdine (1941) began. The 1950s saw Bob Boyd win the NCAA title in the 100-yard dash. The 1960s saw the Lions win their first basketball championship, and one of their first Olympians, rower Hugh Miller Foley (1964). In the 1970s, Loyola and Marymount colleges merged and saw women’s sports begin their dominate history, incluing a pair of tennis championships (1977, 78). LMU then exploded in the 1980s with more individual national champions (Therese Kozlowki in cross country) and more Olympians (Paul Sunderland men’s volleyball gold medal in 1984). The decade also included LMU’s trip to the College World Series (1986) and two women’s rowing Varsity Four National Titles (1981, 86). The 1990s started with one of the most memorable moments in sports history with the men’s basketball run to the NCAA Elite Eight in the 1989-90 season. Women’s volleyball became the first program to win three straight WCC titles (1994, 95, 96), thanks in part to Olympian and All-American Sarah Noriega. Baseball would end the 1990s with three straight titles, the final coming in 2000. Then came the past decade, as the Lions won more titles (22) than the previous 70 years combined. Leading the way were the men and women’s water polo programs, winning a combined 15 titles, including five straight (2001-05) and eight in 10 years by women’s water polo.

HALL OF FAME

THE LEADERSHIP

F

or Dr. William S. Husak life is all about family and his 13 years as the Athletics Director at Loyola Marymount University reflects his family-first approach to life. And that approach has brought success never before seen at LMU. Since taking over the program in 1998, the Lions’ success has been some of the best in program history, Husak firmly believes the program has “just scratched the surface.” The past 13 years have been some of the most successful in school history, winning more than 54 percent of its dual competitions and claiming 28 conference championships and 35 NCAA postseason appearances. Off the field, the Lions have had a 65 percent increase in national scholar-athletes as 208 claimed the honor in the 2009-10 academic year. His administrative efforts in striving for that success has been and continues to be a four-pronged approached focused on people, operational budgets, facilities and endowments. For Husak it starts with developing a family of coaches, support staff and administrators who believe that LMU’s athletics program can be among the elite in the nation. His tenure has been marked by enhancing the support of the athletic teams through: • Staff: Growth of head coaches from 9 to 19 in 10 years • Facilities: $35 million in enhancements since 2000 • Operational: LionsFund support at record high • Endowments: Scholarships tops among WCC Husak is quick to acknowledge the success of athletics is due to a University committed to its programs. Leading this direction was the formation of the Athletic Director’s Council. T

he eight WCC member institutions span the western coast of the United States from Canada to Mexico. From the pine forests of Eastern Washington to the Columbia River Basin, from the dynamic San Francisco Bay Area to the sun drenched beaches of Southern California, the West Coast Conference is characterized by the stability of its membership and its unique emphasis on combining exceptional athletics with excellence in academics. The combined result sets the Conference apart on the national scene and draws the individual institutions together in a common mission. The long and rich history of the WCC demonstrates that success in intercollegiate athletics can be built on the foundation of values, character, and academics. When the West Coast Conference first got its start back in 1952, the founders really had only one goal in mind...to create a convenient way for five Bay Area schools to play basketball. Now, 56 years later, a marvelously cohesive athletics league, which is competitive at the national level in 13 sports, is entering 32 seasons under its present eight-team mix. The current alignment of Gonzaga University, Loyola Marymount University, Pepperdine University, University of Portland, Saint Mary’s College, University of San Diego, University of San Francisco and Santa Clara University has remained unchanged since 1979, making the WCC the third most stable conference in the nation. Only the Ivy League and Pacific-10 Conference have been together longer. In the summer of 2010, the league announced its first change since 1979, the addition of BYU starting in the 2011-12 campaign. The league was chartered by five Bay Area institutions (San Francisco, Saint Mary’s, Santa Clara, San Jose State and University of the Pacific) as the California Basketball Association, playing its first game on January 2, 1953. After two seasons of play under that name, the conference expanded to include Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine in 1955, and became the “West Coast Athletic Conference” in 1956. The name was shortened in 1989.

A HUB OF ACTIVITY

LMU ATHLETIC MEDICINE

T

he busiest place per square foot on the campus of Loyola Marymount University is not what one would think. It is not LMU’s oncampus commons area, the Lair, University Hall or the LMU bookstore. It is the LMU Athletics Training Room. Right around 1,000-square feet, the LMU training room at any given moment in season is what Assistant Athletics Director of Athletic Medicine Keith Ellison calls “organized and controlled chaos.” On a given day, the Athletics Training Room will see about half of the 450 student-athletes at LMU. A given day will include lots of paperwork, therapy for studentathletes recovering from injuries that keep them out of competition, appointments with doctors and pre- and post-practice needs. With more than 50 years of experience in the field, the Training Program provides services that include a philosophy that places a high value on health and wellness, a program that allows injured student-athletes to return to their sport as soon as medically safe and to substantially reduce the risk of athletic injury for those student-athletes.

STRENGTHING CHAMPIONS LMU STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

T

he strength and conditioning program at Loyola Marymount University is an essential component of the Athletic department’s quest for Building Champions. Leading the way in developing a strength and conditioning program that will be the basic building blocks to forming champions is Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Bobby Harmston, who is in his first year at the helm of the program at LMU. “We are here to train our student-athletes to be, first and foremost, the best athletically they can be,” said Harmston, who came to LMU in the summer of 2009. “We will be based around training the student-athletes at LMU to be fit across all 10 physical skills. We then will be training them to be sport specific athletes after we develop them as an overall athlete.”

LMU STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING MISSION STATEMENT “The LMU Strength and Conditioning Department will help all studentathletes reach their full athletic potential by developing all aspects of their physical and mental fitness. The ten recognized physical skills to be developed are Cardiovascular and Respiratory Endurance, Stamina, Strength, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Coordination, Agility, Balance, and Accuracy. We will develop these skills by using the following methods: Olympic lifting, strength lifting, body weight calisthenics, plyometrics, medicine ball throws, agility work, speed work, stretching, tumbling routines, metabolic conditioning, and CrossFit workouts. LMU’s facility and program reflect the total fitness philosophy of the Lion Strength & Conditioning staff.” a CLICK HERE FOR MORE ON LMU STRENGTH PROGRAM

WHERE THE LIONS PLAY ATHLETIC FACILITIES

T

he athletics facilities at Loyola Marymount University have seen a little of everything in the almost 70 years while in its current Westchester location. From the 1984 Olympic games to LMU basketball to the World Cup and everything in between, the LMU athletics facilities have become home to the best and it continues to get better. Thanks to continued commitment by the University, the Athletics Complex over a three-year period will show lots of growth. It started in the summer of 2008 when the University allocated office and meeting space to Lion Athletics within the Dorothy and Thomas E. Leavey Center on the Westchester campus. The Leavey Center is home to 15 of the Lions’ 21 varsity programs in the newly remodeled and modern office complex. • • • • • • • • • •

GERSTEN PAVILION

Gersten Pavilion, entering its 28th year as the host of LMU’s indoor athletic events, is the centerpiece of the LMU athletic complex. Opening in 1981, Gersten Pavilion has become one of the toughest places to play in the West Coast Conference and one of the premier athletic facilities in Southern California. While hosting men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball, the Pavilion has seen its share of memorable moments in the history of collegiate athletics. MEN’S BASKETBALL IN GERSTEN One of the more memorable moments came

as the Lions posted a 16-game winning streak that spanned three seasons from Feb. 25, 1987 through Nov. 28, 1988. In that span, the Lions posted a 14-0 mark at home in the 1987-88 season. On Feb. 20, 1988, during the winning streak, Gersten set the attendance record with a standing-room-only crowd of 4,525 in a 142-127 win over rival Pepperdine. The Pavilion seats 4,156. The Pavilion has also hosted the highest scoring basketball game in NCAA Division I history when Loyola Marymount defeated U.S. International 181-150 on Jan. 31, 1989. In addition, it served as host to the WCC Tournament in 1990 and 1997.

The Pavilion opened its doors on Jan. 15, 1981 with a men’s basketball 83-68 loss to Santa Clara. The Lions’ first win came eight days later with a 66-62 victory against St. Mary’s. To this day the Pavilion keeps bringing them in as the 2005-06 season saw the third largest crowd in school history when 4,482 saw the Lions take on fifth-ranked Gonzaga in a game televised by ABC. It was the first trip to the campus for the network as the Lions fell to a career-best perofrmance by the future No. 3 pick in the NBA draft. Three years later, eighth-ranked Notre Dame came to LMU, where a record 4,534 fans saw the a CONTINUED ON PAGE 89

It houses the athletic programs’ extensive weight rooms, and top-of-the-line training and medical facilities. In December of 2000, a state-ofthe-art scoreboard system was put into Gersten Pavilion. The scoreboard includes LionVision, a giant multi-camera videoboard at the south end of the facility. In the Summer of 2001, a new energy saving event lighting system was installed and the ceiling was repainted white to enhance the on court lighting. More enhancements were made the last two years. In 2006, the center court floor was completely redesigned and resurfaced. The two side courts were resur-

faced the year before. In addition, a state-of-the-art sound system was put into place. The new system features more than 65 speakers throughout the Pavilion, including speakers in the lobby, atrium, restroom and founders room. In the summer of 2007, the entire lower seating sections in the arena where replaced with new Crimson chairbacks and bleachers. Built to accommodate the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the Pavilion served as the host site for the weightlifting competition of the Games. More than 1,000 people were involved with the staging of the event, which attracted the largest number of weightlifting competitors in the history of the Olympics. More than two million people were brought into the Pavilion through television, radio, newspapers and wire ser-

vices that attended the competition. Prior to the Olympics, Gersten was the site of the McDonald’s Gymnastics Classic in 1983, featuring the best male and female gymnasts from the United States and the former Soviet Union. In 1991, the Pavilion was the venue for the men and women’s volleyball and boxing preliminaries at the U.S. Olympic Festival. It has been host to top basketball camps in the country, hosting LMU alumnus Pete Newell and his Big Man’s Camp for NBA players. It has served as one of the official practice homes of the L.A. Lakers, L.A. Clippers and currently the L.A. Sparks. The Pavilion was named in honor of Albert Gersten, father of LMU regent Albert Gersten, Jr., a 1974 LMU graduate. The Gersten family was the largest single donor to the construction project.
