We have a lot to celebrate and Game Day at LMU is a great way to be a part of the many activities happening as we celebrate LMUat100. We thank you for coming out and supporting our studentathletes, our opponents and NCAA Division I athletics. At LMU, athletics is a big part of the college experience, and you, the fan, help in that experience. Fans can make a difference in creating an environment that is a memorable one for all those involved. At LMU, being a fan is about having the Heart of a Lion. We would like you to be a part of that beat and remind you that having a Heart of a Lion is all about cheering with good sportsmanship in mind and being respectful towards all the participants, staff and officials. Its about screaming at the top of your lungs for your team. Its about wearing Crimson and singing the Lions' fight song. It's yelling "Go Lions" when greeting fellow Lion fans. Having the Heart of a Lion is about creating an atmosphere that makes you want to come back, not one that is unenjoyable and distasteful. I am proud to be a Lion and to wear Crimson and Navy. BRIEFLY... Bruce English is in his first season of collegiate basketball at LMU... From Coach Good: “Bruce is one of the most athletic players in the west and he never stops working. He is very explosive and despite being 6-1, he can finish against most post players. He uses his strength well and we really love the fact that he is fearless and his motor never stops. With those traits, he will fit well into what we are trying to do.” BEFORE LMU... Graduated from Lutheran High School (La Verne, CA) in June of 2011... as a senior, helped Lutheran to a 26-5 overall record and 14-0 mark in league play... finished his final campaign averaging 11.4 points, 2.3 assists, 1.8 steals and 3.4 rebounds per contest. In 2009-10 as a junior, averaged 12.4 points, 2.7 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals, leading the squad to a 28-8 overall record and the 2010 CIF State Division V Championship... PERSONAL... Bruce Rayford English II was born on Feb. 2, 1993 in Lynwood, Calif... he is the son of Sharon and Bruce English... volunteered for the Salvation Army during their Thanksgiving Feast... a Business major.

BRIEFLY... C.J. Blackwell is in his first season of collegiate basketball at LMU... From Coach Good: “I have always said one of the most underrated aspects to the game of basketball is rebounding,” said Good. “If you can rebound the basketball, you put yourself in a good position to win games. C.J. has shown to be a beast in the low post, and any time a rebound comes near him, he has shown the ability to get his hands on it.” BEFORE LMU... Blackwell helped Taft to the City Championship and to the Division I State Championship in 2010-11, going 29-3 overall... finished senior season averaging 13.3 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 0.8 blocks per contest, earning First-Team All-City Section honors... returned to California in 2010 from Suwanee, Georgia, where he went to Peachtree Ridge High School... averaged 18 points and earned First-Team Gwinnett Tip-off Club All-County... PERSONAL... Cory Dwayne Blackwell, CJ, was born on Oct. 28, 1992 in Los Angeles, Calif., and he is the son of Megan and Cory Blackwell... his father was a standout for Wisconsin and played in the NBA with Seattle... has yet to declare a major.

His 340 points as a true freshman ranked tied for seventh all-time at LMU for freshman, as did his 10.6 points per game average... led the team with 39 three-pointers while shooting 34.5 percent from long range... also averaged 3.7 rebounds per contest.... finished the season ranked 20th in the WCC in scoring, and eighth in assists... was the only Lion on the season to play all 32 games... OTHER STUFF... Ireland went to Crosby High School in Waterbury, Conn., graduating in June of 2009.... he then transferred to Winchendon School, a premier prep school in the New England area, for a post-graduate season... Anthony Bernard Ireland was born on Sept. 25, 1991 in Waterbury, Conn., and is the son of Lynda Carter and Bernard Ireland... he has two sisters and one brother... did volunteer work with Relay for Life and Hope for Haiti... his major is undeclared.

LMU RECORDS... 113 career three-pointers in 67 games heading into redshirt junior season is ranked 10th all-time at LMU... his 308 three-pointers attempted is 10th, while his 36.7 career shooting percentage from long range is 15th... his 83.5 career FT% is ranked sixth... HIGHLIGHTS... 2010-11... Played just 175 minutes in six games in his third season, missing the rest of the season due to foot surgery... 2009-10... Ranked 15th in scoring (12.3 ppg), 12th in assists (2.5 apg), 6th in free throw percentage (81.6%), 4th in steals (1.5 spg), 9th in 3-point field goal percentage (40.4%), 6th in 3-point field goals made (2.0 pg), 10th in minutes played (32.1 mpg)... 2008-09... Was one of five freshmen to be named to the All-WCC Freshman Team... finished the regular season with 417 points, becoming the first freshman to hit 400 in school history... Earned WCC All-Freshman team honors in 2009-10, third Lion to do so in team history... named Naismith Memorial Classic Player of the Game in 2010... HIGHLIGHTS... 2010-11... Played in 25 games on the season, missing seven games due to a broken hand... ranked 13th in the WCC in rebounding and eighth in field goal percentage... 2009-10... Ranked 24th in scoring (8.6 ppg), 19th in rebounds (4.5 rpg), fourth in field goal percentage (53.4%), 14th in free throw percentage (73.9%), 6th in blocked shots... 2008-09... Played in just seven games due to a back injury suffered against Notre Dame and earned a medical hardship redshirt... OTHER STUFF... f you ask Max Good if he has been around the block in the world of college coaching, be prepared to laugh uncontrollably, blush slightly and become overwhelmed at the number of people that have been touched and positively influenced by the fact that Good has been a basketball coach. And the passionate, charismatic coach of 40 years brings that influence to the LMU men’s basketball program. And ask his players, both current and former, and they couldn’t be more excited. Good, who officially took over the program as the 25th coach in school history on Jan. 12, 2009, is in his fourth season leading the Lions and is no stranger to running a program. This is his 20th season as a head coach at the NCAA level, coaching eight

seasons at Bryant College (2001-08) prior to joining LMU. He also coached at UNLV for one season (2000-01) and eight seasons at Eastern Kentucky University (1981-89). In addition, his impact hasn’t been just at the college level as he was the head coach at the New England prep school Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, Maine, for 10 seasons (1990-00). He now has a record of 274-285 heading into the 2011-12 season. Good coached 28 of the Lions’ 31 games in the 2008-09 season, filling in for former Head Coach Bill Bayno, who served a leave of absence before resigning due to health issues. Good led the Lions despite a limited roster of just seven healthy scholarship players and a non-conference schedule ranked as high as 47 in the RPI. In year two, the Lions finished Good’s

second season at 18-16 overall and tied for fourth in the West Coast Conference at 7-7. It equalled the most wins since the Elite Eight team of 1990. In addition, the team posted its second best turn-around in school history with 15 more wins than the year prior (which was also the secondbest turn-around in the nation in 2009-10), posted the longest win streak since the 1995-96 season (6 games), defeated their first ranked opponent (#9 Gonzaga) since 1990, posted the program’s first rankedwin at Gersten Pavilion, defeated a top-10 team for the second time in school history (the last being in 1960), and had three players earn postseason All-WCC honors, just the 10th time since 1956 three or more Lions have claimed WCC honors.

 FROM PAGE 19 His third season at LMU saw the Lions deal with more injury issues and a juggling line-up as freshman Anthony Ireland was the only player to not miss a game on the season. However, the Lions managed to advance in the WCC Championships for the second straight year and had three players on the AllWCC team for the second consecutive season. That is the first time that has happened since 1989-90. Prior to joining the Lions as an assistant, Good led Bryant University (Smithfield, RI) to new levels of success, posting a record of 132-86 in eight seasons. His final campaign in 2008 saw the Bulldogs earn their fifthstraight NCAA Division II Tournament berth with an 18-13 overall record. Good led the team to another wins record at 25-9 overall, leading the team all the way to the NCAA Division II Championship, falling to Virginia Union in the title game, 63-58. He became a member of the Bryant Athletics’ Hall of Fame in 2011.

Good came to Bryant after spending the 2000-01 season as the head coach of UNLV. He went on to post a record of 13-9 in his one season with the Runnin’ Rebels. He joined the UNLV staff in 1999-00 as an assistant. Prior to joining the UNLV staff, he spent 10 seasons (1989-99) as the head coach at Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, Maine. He compiled an impressive 275-30 (.902) record that included five New England Prep School Athletic Conference Championships. His extensive coaching background includes five seasons as the assistant coach at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond (1976-81). He then was named the head coach and spent eight seasons at Eastern Kentucky from 1981-89. He compiled an overall record of 96-129 (.427) at EKU. He enjoyed his best season in 1986-87 with a 19-11 record as he was named the Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year. The next season his squad was 18-11. Before arriving at Eastern Kentucky, he

spent six seasons at Richmond Madison High School in Richmond, Ky. He served three seasons (1970-73) as the JV head coach and three seasons (1973-76) as the head coach. Through the years Good has seen his share of players go to the NBA. That list includes Sean Colson, Cuttino Mobley, Brad Miller, Erick Barkley, DeMarr Johnson, Mamadou Ndiaye, Caron Butler and Etdrick Bohannon. While known for his success on the court, Good also saw his players achieve in the classroom. His program at EKU had an 85-percent graduation rate, and 122 of his 128 players at MCI academically qualified for NCAA Division I and II competition following their prep years. Good graduated from EKU in 1969 and received a master’s degree from his alma mater in 1970. He was introduced into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in Kingston, RI, for his time as coach at MCI in 2004 and was named the 2005 Words Unlimited Coach of the Year and Rhode Island Basketball Media Coach of the Year in 2008.

The Centennial Season

ith a basketball history that began in 1906 when Loyola Marymount University was then known as St. Vincent’s College, LMU and former Lions have been at the center of some of college basketball’s brightest moments. From the championship teams and the 1990 Elite Eight run, to the lineage of coaching greats that have worn the Crimson and Navy uniform of the Lions, LMU’s basketball history is a rich one. In 2009-10, LMU celebrated the 20th anniversary of one of college basketball’s most memorable teams of all-time. Already voted by ESPN as one of its top sports moments in the last 30 years, the 1989-90 LMU men’s basketball team will forever be one of college basketball’s historic mile markers. The team that still holds many NCAA offensive records (including 122.4 points per game), went on to the 1990 Elite Eight despite the dealing with the death of Hank Gathers. Not only was he the top rebounder and scorer from the year before, he was the Lions’ leader and one of college basketball’s most charismatic players of the era. The 1989-90 Lions would not have been set to capture the nation’s heart if it wasn’t for the teams and individuals before it. There was the Lions’ first conference champions in 1961, which included some of the West Coast Conference’s top players of all-time in Ed Bento (1959-62) and Jerry Grote (1959-62). That team led to some of LMU’s earliest stars in Jim Haderlein (1968-71), one of the greatest rebounders in WCC history with 1,143 career rebounds, and Luther Philyaw (1972-76), one of LMU’s elite scorers with over 1,500 points. There were the head-turning offenses of the 1980s and ‘90s that produced Gathers, Bo Kimble (1987-90), Jeff Fryer (1987-90), Corey Gaines (1986-88), Terrell Lowery (1988-92), Forrest McKenzie (1981-86), Keith Smith (1982-86) and Mike Yoest (1984-88), many of whom are in the top-10 all-time in scoring at LMU. There were the stars of the 1960s, 1970s and earlier that went on to make a name not just as players, but coaching legends. Peter Newell, perhaps one of the all-time legendary coaches in collegiate basketball history, was a Lion from 1936-39. Serving as a mentor to many of the current coaching greats, including Bobby Knight, Newell’s teaching of the game of basketball was second to none. Newell led the University of San Francisco to the 1949 NIT championship before

moving to the University of California. At Cal, he led the Bears to the 1957 NCAA championship with a 25-4 record. In six seasons at Cal he posted a record of 11944 (.730) and finished with a career record of 234-123 in 14 seasons as a head coach. He added to his legend when he led the U.S. Olympic Basketball Team to the 1960 Olympic gold medal. He also served as a general manager for the Lakers and San Diego Rockets. His annual Big Man’s camp at Gersten Pavilion, attended by pro and amateur basketball players, became an institution in the basketball ranks. Newell, who is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame and was inducted into the FIBA Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009, is just one of many former Lions to make an impressive mark in the coaching ranks, one that continues today. Joining Newell as a coach to win a national title from LMU was Phil Woolpert, who played on the same team as Newell and is also in the Hall of Fame. Woolpert led the Dons to back-to-back NCAA titles in 1955 and 1956, coaching basketball greats Bill Russell and K.C. Jones. Others who starred at LMU from its foundation through the 1980s that went onto the coaching ranks were Rick Adelman (1965-68), Clete Adelman (196366), John Arndt (1947-50), Richard Baker (1953-56), David Benaderet (1954-57), Bill Donovan (1946-50), and Gene Pingatore (1955-58) just to name a few. Stars of recent history have gone on to the world of coaching as well, including Jim Williamson (1993-97), who finished third all-time with 506 career assists, and Wyking Jones (1991-95), who played 106 games in his LMU career. In the growing reach of basketball around the world, the recent history has also produced many players who have gone on to play professional basketball, not only in the NBA but all over the globe. Kimble, Gaines and Peter Cornell (199698) have been the most recent to play in the NBA. Gaines started with the Seattle Supersonics, Kimble with the Clippers and Cornell with the Lakers. Overseas, more than a dozen players went on to play multiple years professionally in the last eight years. Those include Chris Ayer (2002-06), Sherman Gay (2000-04) and Matthew Knight (200307), all of whom are currently top players in their respective leagues. As the Lions head into a new Centennial, the Lions history continues to be a thriving one in the world of basketball.

BASKETBALL TIMELINE

Wins first overtime game, a 16-14 victory against California Christian College. The then Loyola College moved to its current location on the Westchester bluff and two years later became Loyola University.

The University was founded in 1911 as an outgrowth of St. Vincent’s College, the first college in Los Angeles. Wins first postseason tournament, the El Paso Southwestern AAU Basketball Tournament. The Lions defeated the 7-Up Bottling Company in the first round 61-39 and Texas Mines 50-33 in the second round. In the semifinals, Loyola defeated Stephen Foster 52-30 and Straton Oilers 47-42 in the championship.

Centennial Game Program

The Lions advanced to their first collegiate sponsored postseason tournament, competing for the NAIA National Championship. The Lions posted a 16-9 record and faced San Francisco State. With a 57-56 win, the Lions moved on to face Southwestern (KS) in the second round. Southwestern won, 83-79.

After suspending the team from 1943-46, Loyola came back in 1946 and two years later went on to its first 20win season, posting a 22-14 record under coach Scotty McDonald. The season included the first game in Alumni Gymnasium, the Lions’ home until the 198182 season when the Lions moved to Gersten Pavilion.

The Lions face in-town rival Pepperdine for the first time, playing each other twice. Loyola won both, 30-18 and 43-23. In that season, both Pete Newell and Phil Woolpert suited up for the Lions. The two Loyola greats went on to become legends in the coaching profession, leading college teams to NCAA National Championships.

Then known as St. Vincent’s College, the school first played basketball in 1906, and possibly finished 5-0.

The Lions joined the California Basketball Association, which two years later formed the West Coast Athletic Conference. Loyola finished the CBA with a 9-5 record, second in the conference.

The Lions finished 20-7 overall, earning their first-ever out-right WCAC title with a 10-2 mark. LMU advanced to its first NCAA tournament, falling to Utah, 91-75, then defeating No. 8 USC, 69-67, in the consolation game. It was the Lions’ firstever win over a top-10 opponent. The University merged with Marymount College to become Loyola Marymount University. Loyola Law School, located in downtown Los Angeles, was founded in 1920. The Lions entered the merger with a new head coach (Dave Benaderet), and as “LMU,” the Lions finished 13-14 and fourth (6-8) in the WCAC.

Paul Westhead is hired as head coach of the men’s basketball team. In his first season, he leads the Lions back to the postseason for the first time since 1980.

THE SYSTEM: Greatest three-year stretch in LMU history produced the highest scoring NCAA D-I teams in college basketball history. Once the Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble era began in 1987, the Lions would go 28-4 and 14-0 in the WCAC that 1987-88 campaign. They would win in the NCAA tournament first round. In 1989 the Lions went 20-11 and won the WCAC tournament to advance to their second straight NCAA tournament. Then, came the 1989-90 Lions. With over 122 points per game, they captured the nation’s attention. They would advance to the Elite Eight in the memory of Hank Gathers, who died during the WCAC tournament just weeks earlier. Many consider the 1989-90 LMU Lions one of the greatest college basketball moments of all-time.

After Jim Haderlein finished in 1971 as the school’s all-time scoring and rebounding leader, Luther Philyaw becomes one of the first four-year stars in LMU history as freshmen are finally allowed to play. For over 25 years he held the freshman scoring record and finished with 1,581 points.

The Lions defeated 26th-ranked Gonzaga at Gersten Pavilion 8074. The win ended the Zags nine-game win streak on the season, their 22-game win streak against WCC opponents and a 16-game stint against LMU.

A year following the Lions’ record breaking year, in which the Lions set some of NCAA’s marks in scoring, LMU set a record that might never be touched in yet another “track meet” against US International. The Lions scored a NCAA record 186 points in their 46-point win, breaking the record of 181 they set two seasons earlier. USI’s Kevin Bradshaw set the scoring record against a Division I opponent with 72 points.

The Lions earned its highest finish since 1996 and 1992 in the West Coast Conference at second place, advanced to the program’s first WCC Tournament Championship since 1989, had three players earn first-team All-WCC honors (the first time since 1990), and finished with two players selected to the WCC All-Tournament team (first time since 1995).

The Lions finish 18-16, go 7-7 in the WCC and advance to the postseason for the first time since 1990. The Lions defeated their first ranked opponent (#9 Gonzaga) since 1990, and first ranked-win at Gersten Pavilion; defeated a top-10 team for the second time in school history (the last being in 1960); defeated Notre Dame and USC on the road.

rom the very beginning, LMU has established a history of champions. In the 1930s it was three straight ice hockey championships. In the 1940s the legendary Pete Newell played for the Lions and the rivalry with Pepperdine (1941) began. The 1950s saw Bob Boyd win the NCAA title in the 100-yard dash. The 1960s saw the Lions win their first basketball championship, and one of their first Olympians, rower Hugh Miller Foley (1964). In the 1970s, Loyola and Marymount colleges merged and saw women’s sports begin their dominate history, including a pair of tennis championships (1977, 78). LMU then exploded in the 1980s with more individual national champions (Therese Kozlowki in cross country) and more Olympians (Paul Sunderland men’s volleyball gold medal in 1984). The decade also included LMU’s trip to the College World Series (1986) and two women’s rowing Varsity Four National Titles (1981, 89). The 1990s started with one of the most memorable moments in sports history with the men’s basketball run to the NCAA Elite Eight in the 1989-90 season. Women’s volleyball became the first program to win three straight WCC titles (1994, 95, 96), thanks in part to Olympian and All-American Sarah Noriega. Baseball would end the 1990s with three straight titles, the final coming in 2000. Then came the past decade, as the Lions won more titles (36) than the previous 70 years combined and yet another Gold Medal (Reid Priddy 2008 men’s volleyball). Leading the way were the men’s and women’s water polo programs, winning a combined 16 titles in 11 years. The current decade includes men’s water polo winning its fourth straight title and men’s soccer claiming their first in 2010.

ersten Pavilion, entering its 30th year as the host of LMU’s indoor athletic events, is the centerpiece of the LMU athletic complex. Opening in 1981, Gersten Pavilion has become one of the toughest places to play in the West Coast Conference and one of the premier athletic facilities in Southern California. One of the more memorable moments came as the Lions posted a 16-game winning streak that spanned three seasons from Feb. 25, 1987 through Nov. 28, 1988. In that span, the Lions posted a 14-0 mark at home in the 198788 season. The Pavilion has also hosted the highest scoring basketball game in NCAA Division I history when Loyola Marymount defeated U.S. International 181-150 on Jan. 31, 1989. In addition, it served as host to the WCC Tournament in 1990 and 1997. The Pavilion opened its doors on Jan. 15, 1981 with a men’s basketball 83-68 loss to Santa Clara. The Lions’ first win came eight days later with a 66-62 victory against St. Mary’s. To this day the Pavilion keeps bringing them in as the 2005-06 season saw the third-largest crowd in school history when 4,482 saw the Lions take on fifth-ranked Gonzaga in a game televised by ABC. It was the first trip to the campus for the network as the Lions fell to a careerbest performance by the future No. 3 pick in the NBA draft. Three years later, eighth-ranked Notre Dame came to LMU, where a record 4,534 fans saw the Lions upset bid fall short in the final seconds.

The 63,000-square foot facility boasts a functional design, featuring rounded columns at each corner, top-ofthe-line training and medical facilities. Built to accommodate the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the Pavilion served as the host site for the weightlifting competition of the Games. More than 1,000 people were involved with the staging of the event, which attracted the largest number of weightlifting competitors in the history of the Olympics. More than two million people were brought into the Pavilion through television, radio, newspapers and wire services that attended the competition. Prior to the Olympics, Gersten was the site of the McDonald’s Gymnastics Classic in 1983, featuring the best male and female gymnasts from the United States and the former Soviet Union. In 1991, the Pavilion was the venue for the men’s and women’s volleyball and boxing preliminaries at the U.S. Olympic Festival. It has been host to top basketball camps in the country, hosting LMU alumnus Pete Newell and his Big Man’s Camp for NBA players. It has served as one of the official practice homes of the L.A. Lakers, L.A. Clippers and currently the L.A. Sparks. The Pavilion was named in honor of Albert Gersten, father of LMU regent Albert Gersten, Jr., a 1974 LMU graduate. The Gersten family was the largest single donor to the construction project. The Pavilion seats 4,156.

THE LIONS ATHLETIC CENTER

he newest addition to the family of facilities that are home to LMU Athletics is the Lions Athletic Center. The 16,000-square foot facility is located between Albert Gersten Pavilion and Sullivan Field, and brings much needed space to the more than 450 student-athletes who participate on one of the 21 varsity athletic teams at LMU. The main piece of the building is the new weight training facility. Named by the Chad and Ginni Dreier Family, the weight room is more than 4,000-square feet and is one of the top training facilities in the West Coast Conference. In addition to the weight room, there are locker room facilities for baseball, softball, womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s soccer and menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s soccer. Also within the building is a pair of executive conference rooms and office space for the strength and conditioning coaches and for the athletic facility operations staff. The ADG Fraternity has named the larger of the two conference rooms, which overlooks Sullivan Field. The building also houses the LMU Ticket Office, a new laundry room, and storage facilities.

PARKING The Loyola Marymount University campus is located in Westchester at One LMU Drive, approximately four miles north of the Los Angeles International Airport. There are two entrances to the campus, the main entrance off of Lincoln Blvd. on LMU Drive and the entrance to the Athletics Complex off Loyola Blvd. and 80th Street. Fans must use the main entrance. You can get directions to the various parking lots from the guard at the front gate. Doors to Gersten Pavilion open one hour before tip-off on game days.
