2011 Season preview Third-year Head Coach Jason Gill took his first team of Lions to the 2009 WCC Championship series, narrowly-missing LMU’s first berth into the NCAA Tournament since 2000. Last year, Gill’s squad fell short of expectations, dropping to the bottom of the West Coast Conference – forcing a few changes in the program. Now sporting an entirely new support staff of coaches, Gill and the 2011 Lions will look to begin the ascent up the WCC standings this year.

Wheeler was named Northwoods League Pitcher of the Year last summer after hurling for the St. Cloud River Bats. While pitching for the River Bats, Wheeler sported a league-best 1.35 ERA with a league-high eight victories and 74 strikeouts. He went 8-1 while holding opponents to a .191 average against, garnering a spot on both the mid-season and post-season All-Star teams. At LMU last year, the 6’6” lefty sported a 1-2 record and a 10.80 ERA over 13 appearances and one start.

The Pitchers Though there is no set rotation as of early February, four juniors seem to be in the mix for time starting on the weekend and/or midweek games. Last year’s Friday guy, Martin Viramontes, is once again on the list to start on Fridays, but a couple other names are also surfacing as more-than-viable options. Left-hander Jason Wheeler is coming off an impressive summer and is pushing for time as the lead starter. Fellow lefty John Lally, along with right-hander Alex Gillingham, round out the suitors for starting spots in the 2011 rotation.

Lally was named 2010 Dairy Queen Classic Most Outstanding Player and All-Tournament tossing a season-best seven shutout innings with five strikeouts against Oklahoma State to help LMU to the Championship. He also earned WCC Pitcher of the Week recognition on March 9 for that performance. Overall, Lally posted a 3-5 record with a 7.38 ERA over 16 appearances and 11 starts. He tossed 64.2 innings total, striking out 51 hitters over the span, good for third on the team.

Viramontes declined a professional contract after being selected by the New York Yankees in the 27th round of the 2010 MLB Draft last year. The right-hander appeared in 15 games, starting 14, as a redshirt sophomore, posting a 4-7 record with a 7.53 ERA over 71.2 innings. He struck out 59 batters, placing second on the team in that category. His best outing came on May 2 when he tossed a complete-game shutout with a seaon-best nine strikeouts against Saint Mary’s, carrying a no-hitter through two out and two strikes in the ninth inning of that game.

Gillingham posted a 2-4 record and a 5.28 ERA over 17 appearances and 10 starts last year. His ERA placed second on the team and 15th in the WCC. The right-hander matched a career-high with eight innings pitched versus Pepperdine on May 14, and posted eight strikeouts on three occasions. As a starter, Gillingham lasted at least five innings in eight of his 10 starts. The native of Thousand Oaks, Calif. tossed a team-high 76.2 innings and struck out a team-best 63 hitters, in addition to notching a save against Oklahoma State in the championship game of the 2010 Dairy Queen Classic on March 7.

Senior Chris Eusebio and junior Ryan Hawthorne will head the relief efforts out of the bullpen – and in the case of Hawthorne – likely out of the outfield. Eusebio was named honorable mention All-West Coast Conference in 2010, and he enters the season ranked tied for eighth in career saves with eight. The most called-upon option out of the Lion bullpen for the second consecutive year last season, Eusebio appeared in 19 games, accumulating a 4-0 record and a team-leading 3.56 ERA. He tossed 30.1 innings and struck out 22 batters en route to saving a team-high six games. That mark placed him tied for fifth in the LMU single-season record books, and fourth in the WCC. Hawthorne, who has been sold as a two-way player since he walked on campus two years ago, will finally take the hill for the Lions in 2011. The left-hander, who is slated to start for the Lions in the outfield, has impressed the staff a great deal during the fall season on the mound, and Hawthorne may play into the closer role throughout the year. The Catchers As they did last season, junior Matt Koch and sophomore Colton Plaia will man the catcher position in 2011. Koch, who declined a professional contract after being selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 22nd round of the 2010 MLB Draft, will be expected to once again be a team-leader on the field and in the middle of the lineup. Koch, who needs 13 home runs to enter the all-time LMU record books, batted .257 with 37 runs scored, 13 doubles and a team-high 15 home runs over 55 games played and 54 starts last year.

THIRD SEASON AT LMU

Jason Gill enters his third year at the helm of the LMU baseball program after leading the Lions to a secondplace finish and an appearance in the West Coast Conference Championship Series two seasons ago.

The Lions finished the 2010 season with a 23-33 overall record and a 5-16 mark in the WCC, placing eighth in the conference. Gill did lead his team to a series sweep over perennial powerhouse Cal State Fullerton, including a victory over thenNo. 9 Fullerton on May 18, and a series victory over Fresno State on the road. The win over the Titans stretched Gill’s record to 3-0 as a head coach against his alma mater. The 2010 season also culminated in the first All-American selection under Gill as a head coach, as 2010 West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year Matt Lowenstein was named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and Ping!Baseball. LMU finished in second place in the WCC in 2009 after posting a 30-29 overall record and a 13-8 mark in conference play. The Lions’ 8-2 start in 2009 was the best since the 1988 season, and it was also the best start over the first 10 games for a first-year skipper in LMU program history. Gill’s 2009 squad finished the year with a 9-2 record against ranked opponents, including recording a four-game sweep of then-defending National Champion Fresno State and a crucial three-game sweep over WCC-foe San Diego. Proving they can play with any team in Southern California, widely considered the toughest region in the country in terms of collegiate baseball, LMU also knocked-off perennial powerhouses, then-No. 5 UC Irvine and sixth-ranked Cal State Fullerton, in 2009. Although those victories were highlights for LMU players and fans alike, they were likely even bigger for Gill, as he coached at both programs after taking the field as a player for the Titans in 1994.

For the four years preceding his start as LMU’s seventh skipper in program history, Gill worked under head coach George Horton at Oregon and Cal State Fullerton, serving as an infield coach, recruiting coordinator and as a primary hitting instructor. Gill is no stranger to starting a program from the ground up, taking on the

task twice, most recently at the University of Oregon. Gill was Horton’s first hire as both men left Cal State Fullerton to begin the reconstruction of the Duck baseball program in 2007. Always considered one of the best recruiters in college baseball, Gill’s 2007 recruiting class was ranked in the top-10 in the nation by both Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America. In the three years preceding the move to Eugene, Ore., the Titans made it to Omaha and the College World Series twice, won two Big West Conference titles and had 35 players drafted. The three-year stint under Horton was Gill’s second on the Fullerton coaching staff, having started his coaching career as an undergraduate assistant for legendary skipper, and Division I baseball’s all-time winningest coach, Augie Garrido. In that first term, Gill served essential roles on both the 1995 National Championship and 1996 Fullerton squads. Before his return to Fullerton, Gill spent three seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for UC Irvine, as the coaching staff resurrected the baseball program from extinction. After just three years of developing the program, Gill helped lead UCI to a NCAA Regional in 2004. Furthering his reputation as a standout recruiter, the Anteaters’ 2002 recruiting class was ranked eighth in the country by Baseball America, with the following two classes among Collegiate Baseball’s top-30. Overall, Gill has served as a collegiate recruiting coordinator directly for seven years, recording six recruiting classes in the top-30 and two in the top-10 over that span.

Prior to UCI, Gill was an assistant coach at Loyola Marymount where he helped guide the Lions to their most recent WCC titles and playoff berths in 1999 and 2000. Over that two-year span, nine LMU players moved on to professional baseball. Perhaps the most successful draft year in LMU history, Gill watched six of his Lion ballplayers sign professional contracts in 2000, including one player in each of the first three rounds.

Coach Gill also served two years as an assistant coach at Nevada in 1997 and 1998. While there, the Wolfpack made the postseason for just the second time in school history. Serving as the team’s hitting coach and working closely with the infielders, Gill guided the 1997 team to nine offensive team records at Nevada. In addition, his tutelage of the infielders was instrumental in placing Nevada first in the country in double plays in both seasons.

Before embarking on his coaching career, Gill played one year at Cal State Fullerton, hitting .345, scoring 28 runs and starting 43 games at third base as a senior. That year, the All-Big West Conference infielder helped the Titans to a 47-16 overall record and a College World Series berth. Gill started his collegiate career playing two seasons at Cuesta College before playing his junior campaign at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

ASSISTANT COACH • FIRST SEASON

Ted Silva is in his first season as an assistant coach in the LMU baseball program. Silva came to the bluff after serving three successful seasons as the pitching coach for UC Irvine, a perennial powerhouse in Division I baseball out of the Big West Conference. No stranger to each other, Silva and head coach Jason Gill spent time as teammates on the Cal State Fullerton baseball team in 1994, helping the Titans to a 47-16 overall record and a College World Series berth. As coaches, the two last reunited in 2005 and 2006 as part of a Fullerton staff that guided the Titans to a pair of Big West Conference championships, and a trip to the College World Series in 2006. Under Silva’s direction, UC Irvine pitchers posted a combined 3.89 earned-run average the last three seasons, all of which included NCAA postseason appearances. In his first year, the Anteaters won the regional at Nebraska in 2008, and were three outs away from a trip to the College World Series, before host LSU rallied to win the Super Regional. UCI followed that successful season by winning the program’s first Big West Conference title in 2009. Last year, UCI finished second in the Big West and was eliminated by host UCLA at the Los Angeles Regional. Developing some of the top pitchers throughout his coaching career, Silva opened his coaching stint as a volunteer assistant at Cal State Fullerton, helping the Titan staff log a national-best 2.73 ERA, the only team in the country under 3.00 in 2006. Moreover, he helped guide All-Americans and first-round picks Ricky Romero (2005) and Wes Roemer (2006) to Big West Pitcher of the Year selections. During his three seasons as UC Irvine’s pitching coach, Silva watched four pitchers (Christian Bergman, Daniel Bibona, Scott Gorgen, Eric Pettis) on his staff haul away a combined 19 All-America accolades. In addition, Silva, who guided Gorgen to a Big West Pitcher of the Year selection in 2008, saw Bibona notch his second consecutive Pitcher of the Year selection in 2010, ensuring that he guided one of his pitchers to the elite award in all five seasons as a coach in the Big West Conference. ASSISTANT COACH • FIRST SEASON

Bryant Ward is in his first season as an assistant coach in the LMU baseball program. Before heading to LMU, Ward spent four seasons with the University of South Florida. Familiar with the LMU coaching staff, Ward, head coach Jason Gill and assistant coach Ted Silva all worked together in the Cal State Fullerton baseball program in 2005 and 2006. Ward, who served as USF’s hitting coach and was in charge of overall development for position players, saw two of his hitters post consecutive individual BIG EAST batting titles in 2008 and 2009. Ward’s 2009 offense proved to be his most productive, hitting .315 as a team, its highest team batting average since 1997. In his four seasons with USF, four Bull position players were named freshman All-America, including Ryan Lockwood who was named 2008 College Baseball News Freshman of the Year. In addition, since his arrival at USF in 2007, Ward saw eight of his position players earn All-BIG EAST selections. Before heading to USF, Ward spent two seasons working in the Cal State Fullerton baseball program. With Ward at Fullerton, the Titans compiled a two-year record of 96-33, and advanced to Omaha in 2006. In that season, the Titans finished the year with a 50-15 record, earning the team’s 14th trip to the College World Series. The Titans finished the ‘06 season hitting .313 with 43 home runs, while ranking in the top-five in each of the year’s final polls. In his first season with the Big West Conference power in 2005, Ward saw the Titans post a 46-18 record en route to hosting the Super Regional. Prior to joining the Cal State Fullerton program, Ward served as an assistant coach at Pitt (N.C.) Community College from 2003-04. He assisted in all defensive and offensive instruction and development, as well as recruiting. Ward was a standout infielder for the East Carolina Pirates from 1998-02, playing for the late Keith LeClair. Serving as team captain during his senior season, Ward helped guide the Pirates to a 182-67 record and four consecutive NCAA Tournament

ASSISTANT COACH â&#x20AC;˘ FIRST SEASON

Steve Chatham begins his first year at LMU after serving five seasons as the hitting coach at perennial JUCOpowerhouse College of Southern Nevada. Like two of Head Coach Jason Gill[apos]s other assistants, Chatham also has ties back to Cal State Fullerton, having played for the Titans from 1995-98. Over his five-year stint, Chatham helped the CSN Coyotes earn three Scenic West Athletic Conference Championships, two JUCO Region XVIII Championships, and one JUCO Western District Championship. In 2010, the Coyotes, led by the play of Major League Baseball top draft pick, Bryce Harper, won a berth to the JUCO World Series where the team placed third and finished the season with a record of 52-16 overall. Chatham started his coaching career as an assistant coach at The Bishop School in La Jolla, Calif., where he was in charge of all aspects of the team including pitching, hitting and outfield duties. As a player, Chatham was a four-year letterman at Cal State Fullerton, where he was a member of the 1995 National Championship team. The centerfielder is seventh all-time in games played for the Titans and holds a career .339 batting average in college. In 1999, Chatham entered the Boston Red Sox organization as a pitcher. Chatham earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology from UNLV in 2005. He and his wife Lisa have one daughter, Madeline (7).

BILLY TRABER UNDERGRADUATE ASSISTANT â&#x20AC;˘ FIRST SEASON Former LMU standout baseball player Billy Traber returns the bluff in 2011, serving as an Undergraduate Assistant after finishing a nine-year professional career, including five seasons pitching for four teams in Major League Baseball. Traber, a first-round pick of the New York Mets in 2000 (16th overall), made his Major League Debut on April 4, 2003 for the Cleveland Indians en route to amassing a 12-14 record and a 5.65 ERA pitching for the Indians, Washington Nationals, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. The left-hander appeared in 96 games, including making 28 starts in his Major League career, while striking out 152 hitters. In eight years of Minor League work, Traber appeared in 202 games, starting 108. He pitched to the tune of a 3.59 ERA and a record of 53-45 with 546 strikeouts. In 2002, Traber was the runner-up Minor Leage Pitcher of the Year, going 17-5 for the Akron Aeros (Double-A) and Buffalo Bisons (Triple-A), and was voted by Baseball America as having the best control and curveball in the league. His numbers were also good enough to give him top-honors amongst Cleveland pitching prospects. While at LMU, the El Segundo, Calif. native was named the West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2000, going 10-4 on the season with a 3.13 ERA. He closed out the regular season with six consecutive wins and finished the year with seven games of 10 or more strikeouts. A two-time first team All-West Coast Conference selection, Traber garnered All-American recognition in 1999 and 2000 while leading LMU to the West Coast Conference Championship in each of his three seasons. Traber recorded 338 career strikeouts, second only to Tim Layana in the LMU record book, over the course of his three years and 340.1 innings pitched, a mark that ranks eighth overall. The 10 wins in 2000 still place eighth in the single-season record book, while his 156 strikeouts that same year are second to none in LMU history. His 135 strikeouts in 1999 also place in the top-three alltime, claiming third overall.

A LOOK BACK BRIEFLY... LMU finished the 2010 season with a 23-33 overall record and a 5-16 mark in the WCC, placing eighth in the conference. The Lions dropped nine of their last 11 games, including seven of the last nine, in 2010. AN ALL-AMERICAN KID… Freshman Matt Lowenstein seemingly had no trouble with the transition from high school into Division I baseball in 2010, garnering a pair of All-American selections. The left-handed hitter was named to Collegiate Baseball Newspapers’ Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team, and also found a spot on Ping!Baseball’s second team Freshman All-America squad. He became the 13th Lion player to be named a Freshman All-American, and the first since Angelo Songco in 2007. Lowenstein, who hit safely in each of the last 16 games of the year, batted .344 with 32 runs scored, 15 doubles, four triples, a homer and 30 RBI in his inaugural season. Playing in the outfield to start, before moving to first base toward the end of the season, Lowenstein started 43 of LMU’s 56 games this year, appearing in 47 overall. Lowenstein finished the season first on the squad in on-base percentage (.419) and was second in batting average (.344), triples (4), doubles (15) and stolen bases (5). The native of Chino Hills, Calif. amassed 15 multi-hit games and eight multi-RBI games. A season-best four hits came when he finished 4-for-4 with four doubles, a run scored and a RBI against Albany on March 27. The four doubles matched a program record set by Joe Ciccarella on February 23, 1991 against San Francisco. He twice collected a high-water mark of three RBI this year, first on May 2 versus Saint Mary’s when he finished a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored, a double, two walks and the three driven in. He matched the feat in the final game of the year against Santa Clara on May 30. His lone 2010 Honor Roll home run this year came on May 14 against Pepperdine. In WCC games alone, Lowenstein hit .325 with 15 runs scored, six doubles, two triples, a Chris Eusebio home run and 13 RBI. In conference play, his 13 RBI tied him for third most among freshmen, while he led all WCC rookies in total bases (39), while All-WCC Honorable Mention Selection tying for second in hits (26) and runs. In all, Lowenstein hit safely in 36 of his 46 games with an at bat this year. ALL-CONFERENCE LIONS… Freshman Matt Lowenstein was named West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year, it was announced by the conference office on June 3. Lowenstein became the ninth LMU player to be selected WCC Freshman of the Year, and the first since Angelo Songco earned the award in 2007. Lowenstein, who also garnered All-WCC honorable mention accolades and a spot on the All-Freshman team, saw teammates Ryan Hawthorne and Chris Eusebio garner All-WCC first team and honorable mention honors, respectively. For Hawthorne, the first-team selection was the first of his career after earning a spot on the All-Freshman team and an honorable mention selection a year ago. The selection marks the first time Eusebio has been honored by the WCC.

Hawthorne was on an offensive tear virtually all season, including a team-best 19-game hitting streak that ran from March 12-April 11. Hawthorne batted .390 (30-for-70) with 10 runs scored, six doubles, a home run, six walks and 13 RBI over his 19-game streak. He collected multiple hits in nine of the 19 games, including three straight from March 19-20, and then again from March 28-31. He hit safely in 40 of his last 45 games played this year. The left-handed hitter batted a team-best .364 with 30 runs scored, 17 doubles, a triple, two home runs, 17 walks, three hit-by-pitches and 44 RBI. He slugged .481 and reached base at a .414 clip. After batting .091 through his first three games, and .211 through his first five, Hawthorne batted .379 since March 5, a span of 48 games. Hawthorne collected a team-high 25 multiple-hit games and a team-high tying 11 multiple-RBI games, including a 4-for-4 day at the plate against Cal State Northridge on March 12 in which he finished with a run scored, a double and two RBI. An even better day came on April 18 at Portland when he batted 5-for-6 with five RBI. The five hits were the most by a Lion this year. Hawthorne hit safely in each of the final five games of the year, including collecting multiple-hits in four of the five. He capped a stellar season by going 3-for-6 with two runs scored, three doubles and four RBI against Santa Clara on May 30 in the final game of the year. On the national level, Hawthorne entered this week ranked 37th in the nation in toughest to strike out, averaging one strikeout per 15.3 at bats. In WCC games alone, Hawthorne batted .382 with 10 runs scored, seven doubles, a triple, a home run and 21 RBI. He slugged .517 and reach at a .412 clip against conference foes this year. He finished the year as the team leader in batting average (.364), hits (78), and doubles (17). In all, Hawthorne hit safely in 44 of his 53 games played this year.

Eusebio was the most called-upon option out of the Lion bullpen for the second consecutive year in 2010. The right-hander appeared in 19 games, accumulating a 4-0 record and a 3.56 ERA. He tossed 30.1 innings and struck out 22 batters en route to saving six games for the Lions. The six saves place him tied for fifth in the LMU single-season record books, while his eight career saves rank tied for eighth all time. In conference games alone, Eusebio posted a 2.70 ERA in five appearances. He notched a 1-0 record and saved three games while striking out nine batters over 10 innings.

LIONS IN THE DRAFT… The Tampa Bay Rays selected redshirt sophomore catcher Matt Koch with the 671st overall pick in the 22nd round of the 2010 Major League Baseball draft on June 8. Fellow redshirt sophomore Martin Viramontes was taken just five rounds later, selected as the 835th overall pick in the 27th round by the New York Yankees. Senior Xavier Esquivel became the third Lion drafted in the 2010 Major League Baseball draft on June 9 when the San Diego Padres selected the right-hander with the 1,024th overall pick in the 34th round.

lmu at the college world series The 1986 LMU baseball team put together the best season in program history. It was also one of the best overall seasons of all time for LMU Athletics. Following a 1985 season in which the Lions did not have a winning record at 27-28, the program performed one of the best turnarounds in LMU Athletics history. That team finished the season with a program-best 50 wins, and wrapped-up the season at 50-15, a 23-game improvement from the previous year. The season started with the Lions winning their first eight games, and 12 of their first 13. As the season progressed, LMU produced a 13-game winning streak from March 21 through April 11, and won 20 of 21 games in the middle of the season. With the winning streak came the nation’s top ranking in the ESPN/Collegiate Baseball National Poll. The Lions never looked back, finishing tied with Pepperdine for first place in the West Coast Athletic Conference at 19-5, forcing a one-game playoff to determine the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Regional. Played at Jackie Robinson Stadium on the campus of UCLA, the Lions defeated the Waves 14-9 to earn the bid to the NCAA West Regional. LMU was placed with UCLA, UC Santa Barbara and the University of Hawai’i in Los Angeles at UCLA. It looked as though it might be twoand-out for the Lions, as they dropped their first game to UC Santa Barbara, 11-5, to move down to the elimination bracket. However, LMU would reel off its next four games, fighting through four separate elimination games to earn a bid to the school’s first appearance in the College World Series. In game two of the Regional, the Lions defeated UCLA 12-10, eliminating the Bruins and earning a rematch with UC Santa Barbara. LMU advanced past the Gauchos with a 14-6 win, and would then have to beat the University of Hawai’i twice to compete in Omaha. After 10-6 and 12-5 victories, the Lions earned a trip to the 1986 College World Series. On May 30, the Lions opened their first World Series trip with a 4-3 win over perennial powerhouse LSU, earning a two-day rest and a spot in the winner’s bracket. The Lions played the University of Arizona on June 2 and lost a heartbreaker, 7-5, to drop to the elimination bracket and face Oklahoma State. The Cowboys were too much for the Lions, as they went on to an 11-5 win, ending what has proved to be the best season LMU has ever had on the diamond.

INSIDE THE LIONS The Lions have had more than 110 players drafted by Major League Baseball teams in program history, including nearly 30 players in the last 10 years. Billy Traber and Chris Donnels are the lone Lions to be selected in the first round, ironically both selected by the Mets. Traber went 16th overall in 2000, while Donnels was taken with the 24th pick in 1987.

The Lions have had eight players with MLB careers of more than five seasons, including C.J. Wilson who finished his sixth in 2010 for the Texas Rangers. Joey Amalfitano, who was a Lion from 1952-54, has posted the longest MLB career, playing 10 seasons in the Major Leagues from 1954-67. He then managed the Chicago Cubs from 1979 to 1981.

RETIRED BASEBALL JERSEYS #10 Jerry Stone A three-year starter for the Lions, Jerry Stone played an integral role in guiding Loyola to its first conference baseball championship in 1973. One of the greatest catchers in school history, Stone had his jersey retired on March 11, 2000, prior to LMU’s game against San Francisco. Stone, a first-team All-WCAC and All-District VIII pick his junior year, also earned first-team All-America accolades issued by Collegiate Baseball in 1973. The All-American tag was the first awarded in LMU baseball history. A switch-hitter during the wooden bat era, Stone still ranks as an All-Time Top-10 statistical leader at LMU in single-season walks (45), while his 106 career walks rank fifth. He hit above .300 for each of his three seasons with the Lions, and managed to maintain a perfect fielding percentage on 38 chances in 1973. In that same year, Stone led the WCAC in home runs (11) and RBI (45). One of Stone’s greatest accomplishments included leading the Lions to their first postseason appearance in school history, a berth in the NCAA District VIII playoffs in 1973. He was drafted in the fourth round by the San Diego Padres in 1973.

#44 billy bean One of the greatest hitters to ever grace the diamond at LMU, Billy Bean had his jersey retired on March 11, 2000, during pregame ceremonies prior to LMU’s game against San Francisco. Bean was one of many great players who helped guide the Lions to the 1986 College World Series. A two-time first-team All-WCC and All-District-VIII pick, Bean earned honorable-mention All-America honors following his junior year from Collegiate Baseball. With an even greater performance his senior year, Bean was tabbed a second-team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association in 1986. Bean still holds the WCC record for single-season walks with 66. He also holds the LMU record in single-season runs scored with 84, a mark that ranks third in the WCC record book. Of the WCC’s nine all-time career offensive categories, Bean ranks in the Top-10 in five of them. Following his standout LMU career, the Detroit Tigers selected him in the fourth round of the 1986 draft, and Bean went on to play for the Tigers in the Majors from 1987-1989. He also spent time with Los Angeles (1989) and San Diego (1993-1995). Bean was also named to the WCC/Rawlings 40th Anniversary Team, recognizing him as one of the WCC’s All-Time Top-40 players.

#54 TIM LAYANA One of the greatest pitchers in LMU history, Tim Layana had his jersey retired during pregame ceremonies prior to LMU’s game against San Francisco on March 11, 2000. Layana’s prowess helped guide the Lions to the College World Series in 1986. A first-team AllWCC pick as a senior, Layana was tabbed the Conference Pitcher of the Year and earned first-team All-District VIII honors. Selected a second-team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association following the 1986 campaign, Layana re-wrote many of the pitching records in LMU baseball history. He is the WCC record-holder in innings pitched, tallying 511.0 innings of work over his career. He also holds the LMU record for complete games (33), wins (35), and strikeouts (405). His 405 career strikeouts and 35 career wins rank second and fourth among WCC All-Time leaders. After guiding the Lions to their second Conference Championship and second NCAA Regional berth in 1986, Layana, who tragically passed away in an automobile accident on June 25, 1999, was drafted in the third round by the New York Yankees. Inducted into the LMU Athletic Hall of Fame, Layana played professionally with the Yankees, Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants. Although he did not appear on Cincinnati’s roster during its World Series sweep of the Oakland Athletics in 1990, Layana posted a record of 5-3 that year with a 3.49 ERA. He also had two saves in 55 appearances. Layana totaled a 5-5 career record with two saves in 78 appearances in the Majors. Layana was also named to the WCC/Rawlings 40th Anniversary Team, recognizing him as one of the WCC’s All-Time Top-40 players.

MATT MULLER LION AWARD WHAT IS THE MATT MULLER lion AWARD? The Matt Muller Lion Award is bestowed upon members of LMU baseball teams whose actions represent the program with pride, dignity and respect. The award was established in 1997 by then-Head Coach Frank Cruz when he assumed responsibility of the program. Renamed in honor of Matthew John Muller (1994-97) following his tragic and unexpected death on November 10, 1999, the honor is awarded to players who represent the team and the university in the highest regard. The cornerstone of the award circles around hard work, dedication to the sport, competing at the highest possible level, and promoting a team environment. Simply put, a recipient of the Matt Muller Lion Award wears the uniform with honor.

INSIDE THE LIONS: Sacred Heart Chapel and its clock tower is one of most recognizable structures on the bluff. The chapel, which was remodeled in 1953, has 29 stained glass windows that represent the major jesuit saints and universities.

DEVELOP THE WHOLE PERSON it’s who you are with hen it comes to providing friends and mentors, you won’t find a university surpassing LMU. The campus population comes from all 50 states and 70 countries. Better still, LMU offers more than 140 extracurricular organizations that hone the students’ skills and help them find like-minded colleagues for life. When it comes time to graduate, students will have the knowledge, the confidence, and the strength of spirit to achieve anything the students can imagine. To help you toward your ideal career, LMU offers a network of loyal alumni. “Even the summer after graduation, I am already aware of the benefits that LMU alumni networking offers,” says a new alum. “When we leave the undergraduate family, it’s as if we graduate into an even larger family that offers constant support.”

BUILDING CHAMPIONS Athletics’ mission statement

he mission of the department is to provide an environment for student-athlete development that supports the pursuit of the highest level of success athletically and academically for the growth of the whole person in the tradition of the Jesuit and Marymount ideals. The purpose of the Intercollegiate Athletics Program at Loyola Marymount University is to support the overall mission, goals and objectives of the University by complimenting its primary academic pursuits with championship sports programs. Additionally, Loyola Marymount University Athletics supports “Pursuing Victory with Honor.”

rom the very beginning, LMU has extablished a history of champions. In the 1930s it was three straight ice hockey championships. In the 1940s the legendary Pete Newell played for the Lions and the rivalry with Pepperdine (1941) began. The 1950s saw Bob Boyd win the NCAA title in the 100-yard dash. The 1960s saw the Lions win their first basketball championship, and one of their first Olympians, rower Hugh Miller Foley (1964). In the 1970s, Loyola and Marymount colleges merged and saw women’s sports begin their dominate history, incluing a pair of tennis championships (1977, 78). LMU then exploded in the 1980s with more individual national champions (Therese Kozlowki in cross country) and more Olympians (Paul Sunderland men’s volleyball gold medal in 1984). The decade also included LMU’s trip to the College World Series (1986) and two women’s rowing Varsity Four National Titles (1981, 86). The 1990s started with one of the most memorable moments in sports history with the men’s basketball run to the NCAA Elite Eight in the 1989-90 season. Women’s volleyball became the first program to win three straight WCC titles (1994, 95, 96), thanks in part to Olympian and All-American Sarah Noriega. Baseball would end the 1990s with three straight titles, the final coming in 2000. Then came the past decade, as the Lions won more titles (22) than the previous 70 years combined. Leading the way were the men and women’s water polo programs, winning a combined 15 titles, including five straight (2001-05) and eight in 10 years by women’s water polo.

Since taking over the program in 1998, the Lions’ success has been some of the best in program history, Husak firmly believes the program has “just scratched the surface.” The past 13 years have been some of the most successful in school history, winning more than 54 percent of its dual competitions and claiming 28 conference championships and 35 NCAA postseason appearances. Off the field, the Lions have had a 65 percent increase in national scholar-athletes as 208 claimed the honor in the 2009-10 academic year. His administrative efforts in striving for that success has been and continues to be a four-pronged approached focused on people, operational budgets, facilities and endowments. For Husak it starts with developing a family of coaches, support staff and administrators who believe that LMU’s athletics program can be among the elite in the nation. he eight WCC member institutions span the western coast of the United States from Canada to Mexico. From the pine forests of Eastern Washington to the Columbia River Basin, from the dynamic San Francisco Bay Area to the sun drenched beaches of Southern California, the West Coast Conference is characterized by the stability of its membership and its unique emphasis on combining exceptional athletics with excellence in academics. The combined result sets the Conference apart on the national scene and draws the individual institutions together in a common mission. The long and rich history of the WCC demonstrates that success in intercollegiate athletics can be built on the foundation of values, character, and academics. When the West Coast Conference first got its start back in 1952, the founders really had only one goal in mind...to create a convenient way for five Bay Area schools to play basketball. Now, 56 years later, a marvelously cohesive athletics league, which is competitive at the national level in 13 sports, is entering 32 seasons under its present eight-team mix. The current alignment of Gonzaga University, Loyola Marymount University, Pepperdine University, University of Portland, Saint Mary’s College, University of San Diego, University of San Francisco and Santa Clara University has remained unchanged since 1979, making the WCC the third most stable conference in the nation. Only the Ivy League and Pacific-10 Conference have been together longer. In the summer of 2010, the league announced its first change since 1979, the addition of BYU starting in the 2011-12 campaign. The league was chartered by five Bay Area institutions (San Francisco, Saint Mary’s, Santa Clara, San Jose State and University of the Pacific) as the California Basketball Association, playing its first game on January 2, 1953. After two seasons of play under that name, the conference expanded to include Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine in 1955, and became the “West Coast Athletic Conference” in 1956. The name was shortened in 1989.
