Family Day Starts Week of Holiday Hoops The LMU men’s basketball team returns home to host three games in seven days during the Thanksgiving Week, starting with the second annual Alumni Family Day at the Game featuring the Lions hosting San Diego Christian on Sunday, Nov. 23 in Gersten Pavilion. A special family tailgate begins the day at 3 pm followed by tip-off at 5 pm. The game will be broadcast live on the LMU Sports Network and on KXLU 88.9 FM. INSIDE THE LIONS • BUSY HOLIDAY WEEK: The Lions have a busy stretch five games in less than two weeks heading into finals week and it starts with three straight at home during Thanksgiving Week. The LMU Alumni Family Day at the Game, offering special $10/$5 tickets to alumni families and friends starts off the week this Sunday. It is the second year for the Family Day that features a pregame tailgate out front of the Burns Recreation Center starting at 3 pm. The Lions then host UC Riverside on Thankgiving Eve, Wednesday, Nov. 26 at 5 pm. The game is the FOURTH ANNUAL LMU HOLIDAY CLASSIC, which is FREE to all and includes $1 hotdogs sponsored by Sodexo. The week ends on Saturday when the Lions host UC Irvine on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 8 pm. That game is part of a tripleheader of basketball as the women’s program hosts the final day of the Doubletree LA Westside Thankgiving Classic at 1 and 3:30 pm that afternoon. Tickets to all the action can be found at LMULions.com/Tickets. • The Lions opened the season with a split at their own LMU Classic on the first weekend of the 2014-15 season. The Lions opened the Mike Dunlap era with a 76-66 win over SE Missouri State, shooting 52.8 percent from the field and outrebounding the Redhawks 41-29. They then fell to Boise State in the final game of the Classic, 77-69. The Lions once again out-rebounded their opponent, and leading by a pair with four minutes to play saw Boise State go on a 12-0 run to take the win. They then fell to 1-2 on the season after shooting woes limited them in a 68-44 setback in the first road game on the season at Arizona State Thursday. The Lions shot just 28 percent from the floor, 9.1 percent from three and 57.9 percent from the free throw line. • Real quick... Godwin Okonji will play in his 100th career game at LMU against San Diego Christian... freshman Simon Krajcovic made his collegiate debut on Thursday against Arizona State, coming off the bench to score nine points with three rebounds, two assists and three steals... The Lions 52.8 percent shooting in the opener was the best since hiting 55.4 percent against Northern Arizona on Nov. 17, 2013 and the 28.1 percent was the lowest since hitting 25 percent against seventh-ranked Gonzaga on Jan. 31, 2013... Evan Payne is the first player to score 22 or more in the first two games of the season since Jeff Fryer did it in November of 1989 with 23 against UNLV and 26 against Nevada. He had 23 and 22 in the first two contests... Godwin Okonji had his second career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds against Boise State. • SENIOR LEADERSHIP: The Lions, with 11 newcomers on the roster, will lean heavily on an experienced trio of seniors. Both Godwin Okonji and Ayodeji Egbeyemi are coming off medical redshirt seasons and will play their fifth season in 2014-15. The two have played in 99 and 94 games, respectively, at LMU. Both were expected to be mainstays in the starting line-up a year ago and enter the game with a combined 137 starts among them. Joining them is senior Chase Flint. He, along with Egbeyemi, have already earned their Bachelor degrees and both are in master programs at LMU. Egbeyemi is the MBA program while Flint is in the Elementary Education program. Flint has played in 45 games at LMU after coming from Eastern Utah College in 2012. • Three players return from last year’s roster that saw action for the length of the season. senior Flint along with junior Marin Mornar and sophomore Even Payne. Mornar ranked 10th in LMU program history with 36 blocks last season, and with two more to start 201415, he now has 48 in his career, which is ranked tied for 21st all-time. Mornar has played in 55 games as a Lion and averaged 2.8 points and 2.9 rebounds a year ago. He ranked sixth in the WCC last year at 1.1 blocks per contest. He had his best two game stretch as a Lion, averaging 11.5 points per contest on 10-for-14 shooting (71.4 percent) in earning two starts. He went 5-for-7 from the field in both games, going for 10 points, four reobunds an assist and a block against SEMO. He then equalled a career-high with 13 points, three rebounds, a block and a steal against Boise State in 31 minutes. As for Payne, he set the LMU freshman record a year ago with 497 points in playing every game. His 15.5 points a year ago - an LMU freshman record - ranked seventh in the WCC. He continued where he left off from his freshman record 497 points a year ago by scoring 23 points in just 23 minutes in the win over SEMO. He then adding 22 points in 31 minutes on Saturday. He finished the two games shooting 14-for-26 from the field (53.8 percent), 5-for-10 from three and 12-for-15 from the free throw line (80 percent). He also led the Lions in assists with 3.0 apg, getting five agaisnt Boise State. It was his seventh and eighth game with 20 or more points in his career. Mornar is averaging 8.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 0.67 blocks after three games, while Payne is scoring 18.0 ppg with 2.0 apg. • After going nearly two years without game action due to taking a medical redshirt, fifthyear senior Godwin Okonji returned in a big way. The forward from Nigeria had his second career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, adding three assists and a steal against Boise State. He has played in 99 games as a Lion and has become one of the senior captains this season. He went 6-for-11 from the field against the Broncos and five of his 10 rebounds were offensive. He also added a block to his resume in the season opening win over SE Missouri State on Friday, giving him 89 in his career. The total is fifth all-time in LMU history, three behind Ime Oduok’s 92. He enters Sunday’s game averaging 6.7 ppg and 7.0 rpg, tops on the team. • BENCH POINTS: The Lions scored 73 points from bench players in the two opening games, primarily due to efficient work by sophomore Evan Payne. He is the first player to score 22 or more in the first two games of the season since Jeff Fryer did it in November of 1989 with 23 against UNLV and 26 against Nevada. They added 22 more against Arizona State, including nine from both Payne and Simon Krajcovic to give them 95 points off the bench in three games. In the last nine games of the season in 2013-14, the Lions combined to score 65 points off the bench.

They played Arizona State in the first road game of the 1970-71 season, falling 87-78 on Dec. 4, 1970. • POST PRODUCTION AT HOME: LMU shot 52.8 percent from the field in the win and finished hitting 49.5 percent on the weekend. A big reason was a huge boost in the post production. The Lions’ four bigs (Okonji, Monar, Petr Herman and Patson Siame) hit 58.6 percent from the field, including Mornar’s 71.4 percent and Siame’s 62.5 percent (5-for-8). The bigs hit 24-for-41, an average of 12 makes on 20.5 shots per contest. Last year, the Lions’ hit 48.1 percent from their four post players, averaging 9.2 makes on 19.2 attempts per game last year. In the road opening setback, the Lions couldn’t hit much of anything as they combined to hit 28.1 percent from the field. The post went 4-for-18 (22.2%). • On March 12, 2014, Mike Dunlap returned home, coming back to his alma mater as the 26th head coach of the LMU men’s basketball

program. In less than four months, the Lions had a new roster that included seven newcomers, just three players that played more than seven games together, 13 players from eight different countries and a coaching staff with over 70 years of combined head coaching experience at every level of basketball. He became the 13th coach at LMU to win in his season debut, claiming the 7666 win over SE Missouri St. • To get a jump start on the 2014-15 season, Dunlap and the Lions found a way to organize a 12-day training trip to Spain. The trip included a grueling training schedule before and during the trip, three games against local all-star teams and a fourth against the Angola National Team, who was training for the World Cup later that month. The result has the Lions coming together heading into the new season. With four walk-ons joining the roster in September, the Lions have 11 of 17 players who were not in LMU uniforms a year ago. An additional three - Ayodeji Egbeyemi, Godwin Okonji and Patson Siame - sat out a year ago, giving them 14 of 17 players that did not see action a year ago (Egbeyemi played eight games before serving medical redshirt year). With youth everywhere on the roster, the Lions will lean on fifth-year seniors Egbeyemi, Okonji and Chase Flint to lead them on the mission of coming together each day throughout the 201415 season under the experienced staff led by one of LMU’s own in Dunlap. • The international roster includes Australia (Joshua Spiers, David Humphries), Slovakia (Simon Krajcovic), Czech Republic (Petr Herman), Zambia (Patson Siame), Nigeria (Godwin Okonji, Ayodeji Egbeyemi) and Croatia (Marin Mornar).

• For the fourth time in seven years the Lions opened the season playing in a tournament, the first time at home. The Lions are 37-21 in season openers since they joined the West Coast Conference in 1955-56. They opened 2008 in the BTI Invitational at Iowa State, the 2009 season was started at Montana’s Grizzly Classic and 2013 was started at this same tournament hosted by San Diego. LMU will play in a pair of nonconference tournaments this season, making it 14 straight years the Lions have made an apperance in a regular season tournament. LMU will also play in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic on Dec. 22-25. Mike Dunlap is 9-6 all-time in openers as a college coach. LAST TIME OUT LMU men’s basketball shot 28 percent from the field, hitting just eight field goals each half as they fell to Arizona State, 68-44, in their first road game of the season at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Ariz., Thursday night. The Lions hit 16for-57 from the field on the night (28.1 percent) while the Sun Devils (3-0) hit 46 percent to stay unbeaten at home. The Lions went 1-for-11 from the three-point line and managed 11-for-19 (57.9 percent) from the free throw line. LMU’s defense kept it close early as they generated 10 steals and forced Arizona State into 17 turnovers, both season highs for the Lions. It equated to a 14-6 edge in points off turnovers as the Lions had just nine. However, the lack of offense put pressure on the Lions defensively. “It is really hard on your defense when you can’t hit shots,” said Head Coach

Mike Dunlap. “We played with good energy and really held the line there early, but our lack of offense really bled into our defense down the stretch.” No Lion had double figures as Simon Krajcovic and Evan Payne led the Lions off the bench with nine points each. Krajcovic, who made his season debut on the night, added two assists and three steals in his college debut. David Humphries and Godwin Okonji led the Lions with six rebounds each. Arizona State had four players in double figures, including leading scorer Chance Murray with 12 points, hitting 8-for-10 from the free throw line. The Lions were outscored the Lions 30-3 from beyond the arc. NEWEST LION LMU Men’s Basketball Head Coach Mike Dunlap announced on Wednesday, Nov. 12, that Adom Jacko has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the basketball program for the 2015-16 season. Jacko averaged 13.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game for Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. “We are very excited to have Adom join our program,” said Head Coach Mike Dunlap. “He gives us an athletic and skilled player that is different than anything on our current roster. His coach at Chaffey, Jeff Klein, did a great job in terms of Adom’s development, and obviously he won a ton of games. He has great length, has shown that he can finish at the rim and can play multiple positions. Most importantly, once we got to spend time with him and his mom, Annette, we knew he was the kind of person we wanted in our program.” Jacko, a 6-8, 210-pound forward, was named to the CCCAA All-State team and the 2014 CCCAA Men’s Basketball Championships All-Tournament Team. He was part of a program that went to the CCCAA Final Four in back-to-back seasons. As a sophomore at Chaffey in 2013-14, he shot 61.7 percent from the field to get to his 13.6 points per contest, ranking sixth in the state. He had 229 rebounds in 34 games, 115 coming on the offensive glass. He ranked third in the state in offensive boards. He added 22 blocks to his resume. The Panthers finished the season 28-6 overall and 10-2 in conference play. He had four double-doubles on the season, including a 25-point, 11-rebound effort against LA Trade Tech on Dec. 12. The Panthers fell in the State Championship semifinals to current LMU Lion Matt Hayes and even-
tual champion Santa Rosa Junior College. As a freshman, Jacko helped the squad to a 27-7 overall record and 12-2 in the conference. They reached the 2013 CCCAA Men’s Basketball State Championships, falling in the state title game, 102-88, to Mt. San Antonio College. Jacko, a graduate of Alta Loma High School, plans to major in Sociology and continues to take classes at Chaffey before joining the Lions in 2015-16. He averaged 13.4 points as a senior in high school and finished his career at Alta Loma averaging just under 10 points a contest.

COACH DUNLAP
HEAD COACH
MIKE DUNLAP L
oyola Marymount University Athletics Director Dr. William Husak announced March 12, 2014 that Mike Dunlap, a 1980 graduate of LMU, has been hired as the 26th head coach of the men’s basketball program. Dunlap returns to the Westchester campus with more than 30 years of college and NBA coaching experience. Known for his player development and on-the-floor coaching, Dunlap was most recently the head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats for the 2012-2013 season, becoming the first coach in NBA history to win three times as many games as the year before. He also spent time with the Denver Nuggets, recently served as a top assistant at Arizona, Oregon, and St. John’s, and won a pair of NCAA Division II National Championships at Metropolitan State College in Denver, Colo. He began coaching right after graduating from LMU and he brings that experience back home. Before arriving in Charlotte, Dunlap spent six years as an assistant coach in the professional and college ranks. Prior to his work as an assistant, he spent nine seasons as the head coach at Metro State, leading his teams to national titles in 2000 and 2002 while earning NABC Division II Coach of the Year honors in both of those seasons. Coach Dunlap, whose teams went to the NCAA Tournament in each of his nine seasons, posted an overall record of 248-50 (.832), winning five Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference titles. In 2006, Coach Dunlap left Metro State to become an assistant coach with the Denver Nuggets under George Karl. In two seasons with the Nuggets, he helped the team to a 95-69 record that included a 50-win season in 2007-08, the team’s first in 23 years. Dunlap then spent the 2008-09 season as associate head coach at the University of Arizona under legendary coach Lute Olson and the 2009-10 season as associate head coach on Ernie Kent’s staff at the University of Oregon. He then joined Steve Lavin at St. John’s in 2010. During the 2011-12 season, he oversaw the day-to-day operations of the team and served as acting head coach in all but four games while Lavin recovered from surgery to treat prostate cancer. Dunlap also served three seasons in Australia (1994-1996) as head coach of the Adelaide 36ers in the National Basketball League, taking the team to the NBL Grand Final in 1994 against the North Melbourne Giants and the semifinals in 1995 and 1996. Over his three season in Adelaide Dunlap compiled a 59-36 (.641) record. Before going to Australia, Dunlap was head coach at Division III California Lutheran from 1989-94. His teams posted an 80-54 record (.597) and won three straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles from 199294, while also advancing to the Sweet 16 in 1992 and 1994. All told in 14 years as a head coach, Dunlap has led his teams to 20 or more wins in 11 of those seasons. His first year as a head coach in 1989-90 is his only season under .500. His college coaching experience also includes five seasons with the Lions (1980-85), one season at Iowa (1985-86) and three seasons at the USC (1986-89).
