REFERENCE TO LMU... Please use its full title, Loyola Marymount University, and/or the abbreviated form, “LMU”. Please do not use “Loyola” or “Marymount” alone. Other NCAA institutions including Loyola College in Maryland, Loyola University in New Orleans and Loyola University in Chicago are often confused with LMU. Also, no hyphens should be used in the full name of the University.

Early Season Heads to Rocky Mountains The early 2015-16 college basketball season will send LMU men’s basketball to the Rocky Mountains where they will face Colorado State on Nov. 19 with a 6 pm (PT) tip-off. The Lions will face the Rams for the first time since 1982 and only the fifth time in program history. The game will be aired live on KXLU 88.9 fm and through the LMU Sports Network thanks to Livestream and the MW Network. THE MATCH-UP • This will be the fifth meeting in the series between LMU and Colorado State, the first since the Lions earned a 63-61 win on Dec. 20, 1982, which was the Lions’ final season at Alumni Gym on the LMU campus. Head Coach Mike Dunlap was an assistant for the Lions that season, working for head coach Ed Goorjian... This will be only the second meeting in Fort Collins, the other coming on Dec. 18, 1968. The Rams won 76-57. The first meeting was on Dec. 23, 1966 and the follow-up was on Dec. 15, 1967... Colorado State opened the 2015-16 season with a thrilling 84-78 victory at Northern Iowa, Nov. 14, as part of the Mountain West-Missouri Valley Challenge. It was CSU head coach Larry Eustachy’s 70th victory at the helm of the Rams. It snapped UNI’s 18-game home winning streak... GAMEDAY • The Lions wrap-up a two-game road swing with the Rams on Thursday. The Lions will then return home for Alumni Family Day at the Game on Sunday, Nov. 22 when the Lions host Antelope Valley State at 3 pm. A special pregame family tailgate starts at 1 pm. Season ticket packages are still available for as low as $90 adults/$45 seniors/children. For those in the LMU community, take advantage of the special discount by entering promo code LIONS90045 when you purchase through LMULions.com/Tickets. Single game tickets are available for Friday’s game for $20 (adult/senior/students) anywhere in the arena and $15 for children. For tickets, visit LMULions.com/Tickets INSIDE THE LIONS • The Lions opened the second-season under Head Coach Mike Dunlap with a 79-74 win over Cal State Fullerton at Gersten Pavilion. The two-game road trip then started with another Big West foe, the defending champion UC Irvine Anteaters. The Lions fell, 77-53, Sunday evening. • Adom Jacko led the Lions in both contests, earning a double-double, scoring 22 points with 10 rebounds in the opener. The Lions’ aggressive defense forced 18 Titan turnovers and finished the game with a 17-7 edge in point off turnovers. LMU also had 17 offensive rebounds, helping them attempt 15 more shots than the Titans. Cal State Fullerton shot 53.4 percent in the second half to nearly erase an 11-point deficit. However, the Lions hit 7-of-8 free throws in the final minute to ice it. • The Lions forced another 17 turnovers against UC Irvine, but unlike the opener where they only had 10 themselves, they turned the ball over 16 times. The Anteaters led the points off turnovers category, 17-13. The Lions shot just 27.4 percent in the setback and in the two games have hit 31.3 percent. In the two games the Lions have hit 38-for-48 from the free throw line (79.2 percent). Adom Jacko led the Lions in scoring and rebounds for the second straight game with 17 and six. Junior Brandon Brown had 14 points, five rebounds and three assists. Jacko and Brown combined to hit 11-for-26 from the field. The rest of the team went six-for-36.

Dominguez Hills on Nov. 8 at Gersten Pavilion. The Lions earned a 92-58 win behind Brandon Brown’s 26 points. The Lions defense got a jump start on the season, forcing 22 turnovers and turning it to a 32-7 edge in points off turnovers. As a unit, the Lions have held a 49-14 edge in that category and have created 16 steals, 10 against the Toros. • Seniors Marin Mornar and David Humphries top the list of returning leaders. Mornar is the only four-year player on this year’s roster, and he took huge strides a year ago. He played in all 31 games and made 22 starts, the most of any returner. He finished second on the team with 9.9 ppg and 5.3 rpg. He finished his junior season second in the WCC with 47 blocks, giving him 93 in his career. He enters the season ranked fifth all-time in LMU history. Humphries was one of Dunlap’s first recruits, and the junior college transfer hit his stride in West Coast Conference play last season. He also played all 31 games, starting 18 - 14 of which came in WCC play. He averaged 6.6 ppg on the season, raising that to 8.3 ppg in conference games. He shot 39.3 percent from the field and 37.2 percent from three on the season, raising that to 42.3 and 43.1 percent, respectively, in the WCC. • Junior Matt Hayes was another junior college transfer, entering the Lions program as a sophomore. The sharpshooter was ranked ninth in the WCC in hitting 40.5 percent from three on the season. He finished playing 29 games, starting

seven. Injuries slowed him in the middle of the season, but like Humphries, he was leaned on more as WCC play progressed. He finished averaging 4.2 ppg, scoring a season-best 20 against Santa Clara on Feb. 21. Sophomores Joshua Spiers and Petr Herman also had opportunities in their freshmen campaigns. Both had to adjust to coming from overseas, but showed flashes of growth towards the end of the season. • Also returning for the Lions are the redshirt transfer Haney and walk-on Tyler Batiste. Haney played in 24 of the 31 games as a true freshman for Central Florida before transferring to LMU a year ago. He averaged 4.8 minutes and 1.5 points per game at UCF. Haney was named second-team Florida Class 7A All-State after averaging 16.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals per contest for St. Thomas Aquinas. Batiste graduated from Westchester High School in 2013 and earned letters his final two seasons for Head Coach Ed Azzam. • The 2015-16 recruiting class combined to post a record of 266-98 (73.1 winning percentage) in each of their final two seasons at the previous institution. The incoming class includes NJCAA Player of the Year Brandon Brown (Phoenix College; Phoenix, Ariz.), Guyer High School (TX) all-conference selection and walk-on Miles Crawford (Denton, Tex., Elev8 Academy), 2014 CCCAA All-State forward Adom Jacko (Chaffey College; Upland, Calif.), NJCAA All-Conference selection Shamar LMU Men’s Basketball • 2015-16 Game Notes • www.LMULions.com • #LMULions

2015-16 LMU BASKETBALL Johnson (Pensacola State College; Pensacola, Fla.), McDonald’s All-American Games nominee Jeffery McClendon (Eastside HS, Pasadena, Calif.), NJCAA All-Conference selection Buay Tuach (Northeast C.C.; Norfolk, Neb.) and Canadian National Team member Munis Tutu (Windsor, Ontario, Canada; La Lumiere). NEWEST LIONS LMU men’s basketball has earned commitments from Fairfax High School senior Donald Gipson and Fresno City College sophomore Josh Sykes, announced Head Coach Mike Dunlap. The two highly regarded talents signed National Letters of Intent on the first day of signing. Gipson was a First-Team All-Los Angeles City selection for a Fairfax team that ranked as high as fifth in the nation in the USA Today Super 25 High School poll. Fairfax made it to the CIF Southern Section regional finals, finishing 32-3 a year ago. Sykes, who graduated from Golden Valley High School in 2014, enters his second season at Fresno City College. He was named Player of the Year during his time at Golden Valley and is a reason why Fresno City is ranked fifth in the state. “We are really excited at the talent level of both Donald and Josh,” said Head Coach Mike Dunlap. “They are both very talented California products and they will fit well within our program. We took huge strides with our class heading into this season, and these two give us a big start to our 2016-17 incoming class.” As a junior, Gipson, the 6-3, 190-pound guard from Los Angeles, Calif., turned heads for one of the top programs in the nation. The team started the year taking home the championship of the 55th Snowball Classic, defeating teams

by a score of 350-171 in the nationally known tournament. Gipson was named MVP, scoring 20 points in the title game, 22 in the semifinals, 20 points in the quarterfinals. Gipson’s junior season earned him All-City in one of toughest regions in the state. His season ended in the regional finals with a knee injury but is expected to be at full health for his senior season. “Coach Harvey Kitani has given him amazing guidance throughout his career, especially in preparing for his senior season after his injury,” said Dunlap. “Coach Kitani believes he has the ability to be the top player in the City Section and he definitely has the taken level to reach that status. He is a tremendous perimeter shooter and a great defender. He is a good fit for our program.” Joining Gipson is the junior college forward Sykes. The 6-8, 190-pound talent turned heads over the summer for his development after one year with Coach Ed Madec at Fresno City. He averaged 4.5 points and 4.3 rebounds as a freshman, and is one of the reasons the Rams are ranked second in Northern California entering this week. Sykes had a solid 15-points, 12-rebound performance last Sunday in a setback to No. 1 CCSF in the finals of the CCSF tip-off tournament. “Sykes has amazing athletic talent and Coach Madec really worked hard to get him to understand what it takes

to capitalize on that talent. Once he realized that, he really turned heads this summer,” said Dunlap. “He is a very long athlete who can make things hard at the rim. He is a very good rebounder and is another good fit for our program.” Sykes averaged 10.1 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game his senior season at Golden Valley High School in Merced. He was named the Merced Sun-Star Player of the Year as a junior, averaging 10.9 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per game. He finished his career for coach Keith Hunter with 8.3 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game.

PLAYING EXPERIENCE 1976-78 Pierce College 1978-80 LMU

n March 12, 2014, Loyola Marymount University Athletics Director Dr. William Husak named Mike Dunlap, a 1980 graduate of LMU, as the 26th head coach of the men’s basketball program. Dunlap returned to the Westchester campus with more than 30 years of college and NBA coaching experience. He enters his second season at the helm of the Lions in 2015-16. “The first-year was about establishing the foundations of this program,” said Dunlap. “We have made some great strides in establishing a culture necessary to build a successful program. We have made some great changes and the allocation of the Burns Back Court by the University for our use will go a long way to improving the development of our program. We are very thankful to the University for their commitment. The first season has been about establishing a way of doing business each and every day, and we enter the second season, building on that and striving for success at the highest level.” The Lions finished Dunlap’s first season 8-23, playing most of the season with just seven scholarship players due to injuries. His second season will feature just five players who played in a Lion uniform the year prior with eight new faces to the program. He enters his 15th season as a head coach at the collegiate level with a 336-128 record (.724). Known for his player development and on-the-floor coaching, Dunlap was most recently the head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats for the 2012-2013 season, becoming the first coach in NBA history to win three times as many games as the year before. Before arriving in Charlotte, Dunlap spent six years as an assistant coach in the professional and college ranks. Prior to his work as an assistant, he spent nine seasons as the head coach at Metro State, leading his teams to the national titles in 2000 and 2002 while earning NABC Division II Coach of the Year honors in both of those seasons. Coach Dunlap, whose teams went to the NCAA Tournament in each of his nine seasons, posted an overall record of 248-50 (.832), winning five Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference titles. In 2006, Coach Dunlap left Metro State to become an assistant coach with the Denver Nuggets under George Karl. In two seasons with the Nuggets, he helped the team to a 95-69 record that included a 50-win season in 2007-08, the team’s first in 23 years. Dunlap then spent the 2008-09 season as associate head coach at the University of Arizona under legendary coach Lute Olson and the 2009-10 season as associate head coach on Ernie Kent’s staff at the University of Oregon before joining Steve Lavin at St. John’s in 2010. During the 2011-12 season, he oversaw the day-to-day operations of the team and served as acting head coach in all but four games while Lavin recovered from surgery to treat prostate cancer. Dunlap’s previous head coaching experience also includes three seasons with the Adelaide 36ers in Australia’s National Basketball League and five seasons at California Lutheran University. From 1994-97, he led the 36ers to a 59-33 record (.641) and three straight appearances in the NBL Final Four, including advancing to the Grand Final game in 1995. Before going to Australia, Dunlap was head coach at Division III California Lutheran from 1989-94, where his teams posted an 80-54 record (.597) and won three straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles from 1992-94, while also advancing to the Sweet 16 in 1992 and 1994. His college coaching experience also includes five seasons with the Lions (1980-85), one season at the University of Iowa (1985-86) and three seasons at the University of Southern California (1986-89). A native of Fairbanks, Alaska, Dunlap earned an associate of arts degree in science from Pierce College in 1978, before attaining a bachelor’s degree in English from Loyola Marymount University in 1980. Dunlap and his wife have three children. An avid runner, Dunlap has a 100mile race to his credit.
