INSIDE THE LIONS • The Lions have won three straight and improved to 4-2 on the season thanks to an 82-80 overtime win against CSUN on Nov. 25 and then a 73-60 road win over SE Missouri State on Nov. 28... LMU improved to 3-0 at home to start the early season as they head to the road for seven of their next nine games. • Sophomore Joshua Spiers erupted for a career-best 24 points, hitting 6-of-10 three-pointers, to lead the Lions in overtime. As a freshman, Spiers had 25 points and six three-pointers for the season. He finished 7-for-11 from the field, adding three rebounds and a steal. He scored five of the Lions’ nine points in overtime and hit the would be game winner. He was a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. On Saturday, he was one of five Lions in double figures, scoring 10-points with two more three pointers. He was once again perfect from the line, leading the Lions to its third straight win. He finished the week 9-for-18 from the field, 8-for-17 from three, 8-for-8 from the charity stripe, adding four rebounds, two assists and three steals. • The Lions finished the win at SEMO 10-for-31 from three, giving them four straight games with nine or more three-pointers. It is the longest streak of nine or more since the Lions went four straight games in the 1990-91 season. The last game of that streak is the highest scoring game in NCAA history, the 186-140 win over US International on Jan. 5, 1991. The Lions are currently ranked third in the West Coast Conference entering the week hitting 7.8 three-pointers a game. • Joshua Spiers’ six three-pointers against CSUN on Nov. 25 is tied for the most in the last 20 years. Junior Matt Hayes hit six three-pointers a year ago against Santa Clara (Feb. 21, 2015), going for his career-best 20. Adoyah Miller also hit six three pointers in a double-overtime win against Boise State on Dec. 19, 2006. Spiers leads the Lions with 12 three-pointers on the season, hitting 41.7 percent. Sophomore Steven Haney has hit 11 and junior Brandon Brown has hit six, leading the Lions at 46.2 percent from long range. • The Lions went 17-for-19 from the free throw line in the win over SEMO, hitting all 11 attempts in the second half. For the season, the Lions enter the week hitting 79.2 percent from the free throw line, which is tops in the West Coast Conference and ranked ninth in the nation. • Taking care of the ball has been a factor this season for the Lions - both on offense and defense. On the offensive side, the Lions lead the WCC and rank 20th in the nation with a +5.33 turnover margin. The Lions force a league leading 17.3 turnovers while only turning the ball over 12.0 times per game, tied for second in the WCC. Defensively, the Lions are second in the WCC in steals with 9.3 per game, which is ranked 21st nationally. has equated to 106 points, holding a 15-11 edge against CSUN and a 15-12 edge at SEMO. • Jacko’s double-double is the first by an LMU player in his first game as a Lion against an NCAA Division I program in 35 years. Senior Marin Mornar had 13 and 11 against Pacifica on Nov. 9, 2012. In addition, the 22 points were the most by a Lions’ player in his first game since Larry Davis had 22 against Boise State on Nov. 13, 2009. Brandon Worthy had a 24-point effort against Loyola Chicago on Nov. 22, 2002 for the best scoring game by a Lion his first collegiate game (freshman). • Senior Marin Mornar was second in the WCC in blocks a year ago, finishing with 47 as a junior to rank 5th all-time for blocks in a season. He is back at it to start his senior season. He had three in the opener against the Titans LMU ALL-TIME BLOCK LEADERS 2000-04 and added five more since to 1. 144 Sherman Gay 2. 110 Chris Ayer 2002-06 move to third all-time with 101 3. 101 Marin Mornar 2012-16 blocks. percentage) in each of their final two seasons at the previous institution. The incoming class includes NJCAA Player of the Year Brandon Brown (Phoenix College; Phoenix, Ariz.), Guyer High School (TX) all-conference selection and walk-on Miles Crawford (Denton, Tex., Elev8 Academy), 2014 CCCAA All-State forward Adom Jacko (Chaffey College; Upland, Calif.), NJCAA All-Conference selection Shamar Johnson (Pensacola State College; Pensacola, Fla.), McDonald’s All-American Games nominee Jeffery McClendon (Eastside HS, Pasadena, Calif.), NJCAA AllConference selection Buay Tuach (Northeast C.C.; Norfolk, Neb.) and Canadian National Team member Munis Tutu (Windsor, Ontario, Canada; La Lumiere). GAME FIVE LMU had five different players in double figures as they earned a 73-60 road win over Southeast Missouri State at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo., Saturday afternoon. The Lions (4-2) had one of their more complete efforts thanks to a 40-point second half to win their third straight. Freshman Munis Tutu had a career-high 13 points to lead the five Lions in double figures. David Humphries came off the bench to hit four three-pointers to score 12. He was followed by Joshua Spiers, Adom Jacko and Steven Haney all with 10 points each. Antonius Cleveland was the only Redhawks (0-5), who were playing in their home opener, in double figures with 17 points. “We had balanced scoring and we are getting different guys to step-up,” said Head Coach Mike Dunlap. “Another positive for LMU Men’s Basketball • 2015-16 Game Notes • www.LMULions.com • #LMULions

2015-16 LMU BASKETBALL us is that we hit our free throws down the stretch. We got our first win on the road. It is so important to learn how to win on the road.” The Lions finished with 10 three-pointers, their fourth straight game with nine or more. They hit 36.5 percent from the field but overcame that with 15 points off turnovers, forcing the Redhawks into 18. The Lions held onto a 33-31 lead at the break and SEMO tied the game with two free throws to start the second frame. The Lions then went on a 14-4 run to take a 10-point lead after a Spiers three-pointer with 16:34 to play. SEMO managed to cut the lead to six, but another Lions run, this one a 10-2 clip, gave the Lions their largest lead of the game, 62-47, after a Haney three-pointer. The Lions finished the game 17-for-19 from the free throw line, hitting all 11 they shot in the second half. NEWEST LIONS LMU men’s basketball has earned commitments from Fairfax High School senior Donald Gipson and Fresno City College sophomore Josh Sykes, announced Head Coach Mike Dunlap. The two highly regarded talents signed National Letters of Intent on the first day of signing. Gipson was a First-Team All-Los Angeles City selection for a Fairfax team that ranked as high as fifth in the nation in the USA Today Super 25 High School poll. Fairfax made it to the CIF Southern Section regional finals, finishing 32-3 a year ago. Sykes, who graduated from Golden Valley High School in 2014, enters his second season at Fresno City College. He was named Player of the Year during his time at Golden Valley and is a reason why Fresno City is ranked fifth in the state. “We are really excited
at the talent level of both Donald and Josh,” said Head Coach Mike Dunlap. “They are both very talented California products and they will fit well within our program. We took huge strides with our class heading into this season, and these two give us a big start to our 2016-17 incoming class.” As a junior, Gipson, the 6-3, 190-pound guard from Los Angeles, Calif., turned heads for one of the top programs in the nation. The team started the year taking home the championship of the 55th Snowball Classic, defeating teams by a score of 350-171 in the nationally known tournament. Gipson was named MVP, scoring 20 points in the title game, 22 in the semifinals, 20 points in the quarterfinals. Gipson’s junior season earned him All-City in one of toughest regions in the state. His season ended in the regional finals with a knee injury but is expected to be at full health for his senior season. “Coach Harvey Kitani has given him amazing guidance throughout his career, especially in preparing for his senior season after his injury,” said Dunlap. “Coach Kitani believes he has the ability to be the top player in the City Section and he definitely has the taken level to reach that status. He is a tremendous perimeter shooter and a great defender. He is a good fit for our program.” Joining Gipson is the junior college forward Sykes. The 6-8, 190-pound talent turned heads over the summer for his development after one year with Coach Ed Madec at Fresno City. He averaged 4.5 points and 4.3 rebounds as a freshman, and is one of the reasons the Rams are ranked second in Northern California entering this week. Sykes had a solid 15-points, 12-rebound performance last Sunday in a setback to No. 1 CCSF
in the finals of the CCSF tip-off tournament. “Sykes has amazing athletic talent and Coach Madec really worked hard to get him to understand what it takes to capitalize on that talent. Once he realized that, he really turned heads this summer,” said Dunlap. “He is a very long athlete who can make things hard at the rim. He is a very good rebounder and is another good fit for our program.” Sykes averaged 10.1 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game his senior season at Golden Valley High School in Merced. He was named the Merced Sun-Star Player of the Year as a junior, averaging 10.9 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per game. He finished his career for coach Keith Hunter with 8.3 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game.

n March 12, 2014, Loyola Marymount University Athletics Director Dr. William Husak named Mike Dunlap, a 1980 graduate of LMU, as the 26th head coach of the men’s basketball program. Dunlap returned to the Westchester campus with more than 30 years of college and NBA coaching experience. He enters his second season at the helm of the Lions in 2015-16. “The first-year was about establishing the foundations of this program,” said Dunlap. “We have made some great strides in establishing a culture necessary to build a successful program. We have made some great changes and the allocation of the Burns Back Court by the University for our use will go a long way to improving the development of our program. We are very thankful to the University for their commitment. The first season has been about establishing a way of doing business each and every day, and we enter the second season, building on that and striving for success at the highest level.” The Lions finished Dunlap’s first season 8-23, playing most of the season with just seven scholarship players due to injuries. His second season will feature just five players who played in a Lion uniform the year prior with eight new faces to the program. He enters his 15th season as a head coach at the collegiate level with a 336-128 record (.724). Known for his player development and on-the-floor coaching, Dunlap was most recently the head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats for the 2012-2013 season, becoming the first coach in NBA history to win three times as many games as the year before. Before arriving in Charlotte, Dunlap spent six years as an assistant coach in the professional and college ranks. Prior to his work as an assistant, he spent nine seasons as the head coach at Metro State, leading his teams to the national titles in 2000 and 2002 while earning NABC Division II Coach of the Year honors in both of those seasons. Coach Dunlap, whose teams went to the NCAA Tournament in each of his nine seasons, posted an overall record of 248-50 (.832), winning five Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference titles. In 2006, Coach Dunlap left Metro State to become an assistant coach with the Denver Nuggets under George Karl. In two seasons with the Nuggets, he helped the team to a 95-69 record that included a 50-win season in 2007-08, the team’s first in 23 years. Dunlap then spent the 2008-09 season as associate head coach at the University of Arizona under legendary coach Lute Olson and the 2009-10 season as associate head coach on Ernie Kent’s staff at the University of Oregon before joining Steve Lavin at St. John’s in 2010. During the 2011-12 season, he oversaw the day-to-day operations of the team and served as acting head coach in all but four games while Lavin recovered from surgery to treat prostate cancer. Dunlap’s previous head coaching experience also includes three seasons with the Adelaide 36ers in Australia’s National Basketball League and five seasons at California Lutheran University. From 1994-97, he led the 36ers to a 59-33 record (.641) and three straight appearances in the NBL Final Four, including advancing to the Grand Final game in 1995. Before going to Australia, Dunlap was head coach at Division III California Lutheran from 1989-94, where his teams posted an 80-54 record (.597) and won three straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles from 1992-94, while also advancing to the Sweet 16 in 1992 and 1994. His college coaching experience also includes five seasons with the Lions (1980-85), one season at the University of Iowa (1985-86) and three seasons at the University of Southern California (1986-89). A native of Fairbanks, Alaska, Dunlap earned an associate of arts degree in science from Pierce College in 1978, before attaining a bachelor’s degree in English from Loyola Marymount University in 1980. Dunlap and his wife have three children. An avid runner, Dunlap has a 100mile race to his credit.
