Road Swings to San Diego for WCC Game of the Week The Lions’ quick return trip to the BYU-San Diego travel partner continues on Saturday when the LMU (10-11, 3-7) heads to San Diego to take on the Toreros (6-14, 1-8) for the WCC Game of the Week on Jan. 30 at 1 pm. THE MATCH-UP • The two programs will face-off for the second time in a week after the Lions took a 46-45 edge in the close series with a 67-63 win on Jan. 23 at Gersten Pavilion. In the first meeting, LMU turned to its defense and freshman guard Munis Tutu led the charge, forcing San Diego into 17 turnovers that helped lead the Lions to the win. The Lions finished the game with just five turnovers themselves and held an 18-5 edge in points off the takeaways. Tutu came off the bench and ignited a rally - the Lions trailed by nine in the first half - finishing with 10 points, four assists and four steals. Adom Jacko, who was in early foul trouble, scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half to lead all scorers. Brandon Brown added 12 points. Vasa Pusica had a double-double for the Toreros, going for 17 points and 12 rebounds. Both teams dropped decisions on Thursday with San Diego falling 75-65 to Pepperdine while the Lions fell at BYU, 87-62. The game will be the WCC Game of the Week and like the Lions did in the first match-up by wearing their Crimson uniforms, USD will be in their columbia blue uniforms while the Lions will wear their home whites. The action will begin on Time Warner Cable SportsNet with This Week in the WCC live from the Jenny Craig Pavilion at 12:30 pm. Tip-off is then at 1 pm and can be seen on TWC SportsNet, CSN California, ROOT Northwest and on TheW.tv (out-of-region). Barry Tompkins will call the action with Casey Jacobsen and Kelli Tennant will be courtside. INSIDE THE LIONS • The West Coast Conference named LMU junior Adom Jacko as Player of the Week for Jan. 25. He averaged 24.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in two games at Gersten Pavilion last week. Jacko was at it again on Thursday, scoring 20 points with seven rebounds, going 9-for-16 from the field. In two games against BYU, the junior went 20-for-28 (71.4 percent) from the field with 46 points. The Lions are 10-11 on the season and 3-7 in the WCC as the second half of conference play continues. • Last week Jacko shot 70.3 percent from the field, hitting 19-for-27. He was also 11-for-14 from the free throw line and added four blocks, earning two in each game. On Thursday against the Cougars, he finished the game 11-for-12 from the field, equaling the all-time LMU record for shooting percentage in a game (91.6 percent - 10 or more attempts). Victor Lazzaretti with 11-for-12 against Pepperdine on Feb. 25, 1987 and Mike Yoest did it against Marquette on Jan. 6, 1988. Jacko is fifth in the WCC in doubledoubles and moved to eighth in scoring at 15.5 ppg, 7th in shooting at 54.7 percent, ninth in rebounds at 6.6 and fifth in offensive rebounds at 2.6. Jacko’s first double-double, a 22-point and 10-rebound effort in the season opener, was the first double-double by an LMU player in his first game as a Lion against an NCAA Division I program in 35 years. • LMU continues to lead the league in turnover margin at +2.7, ranking second in the WCC in creating 14.5 turnovers a game while turning the ball over just 11.8 times per game, third in the WCC. In the first meeting against USD, the Lions forced 17 USD turnovers while having just five themselves, a season low. They finished with 11 steals and outscored the Toreros 18-5 in points off turnovers. In Provo on Thursday, the Lions had 13 turnovers to 11 for BYU and were outscored 24-12 in points off turnovers.
