Hoops Returns Home to Host Bulldogs The second half of West Coast Conference play continues with LMU men’s basketball returning home to face Gonzaga for the first time this year. The Lions opened WCC play at Portland and Gonzaga before Christmas, the earliest the conference as started in its 50-plus year history. The Lions will face the Bulldogs to compete the season series on Thursday, Feb. 4 with tip-off set for 7 pm on ROOT Sports and on KXLU 88.9 FM. THE MATCH-UP • This will be the 88th meeting between LMU and Gonzaga with the Bulldogs winning the last 13 meetings. The Lions last defeated the Bulldogs in Gersten Pavilion on Feb. 18, 2010. They were ranked 9th nationally at the time and is the highest ranked opponent the Lions have defeated in Gersten Pavilion. In the first meeting on Dec. 23, LMU couldn’t answer the offensive efficiency of Gonzaga in the second game of the West Coast Conference schedule. The Bulldogs shot 60 percent (27-for-45) from the field to earn a 85-62 win at the McCarthey Center. The Bulldogs missed just two free throw in 23 attempts (91.3 percent) and hit 10-of-18 from three (55.6 percent). The Lions finished the game shooting 40 percent (24for-60), hitting 48.4 percent in the second half to overcome a 31 percent (9-for-29) clip in the first half. They finished 9-for-14 from the free throw line (64.3 percent) and 5-for-20 from three (25 percent). Adom Jacko had his fourth double-double of the season. He finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds, going for five offensive boards. Steven Haney Jr. and Brandon Brown added 14 each. Kyle Wiltjer led all scorers with 26 points, knocking down 20 in the first half. He finished 4-for-6 from three. Domantas Sabonis finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds.The game will be broadcast by KHQ-TV (Spokane) and will be broadcast on ROOT Northwest, ROOT Rocky Mountain, ROOT Southwest, and CSN Bay Area. It will be streamed on TheW.tv (out-of-market) and on ESPN3 (out-of-region). INSIDE THE LIONS • The West Coast Conference named LMU junior Adom Jacko as Player of the Week for Jan. 25. He averaged 24.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in two games at Gersten Pavilion last week. He has continued to provide the Lions’ scoring, scoring 20 points with seven rebounds, going 9-for-16 from the field against BYU and then going for 20 points and five rebounds in 27 minutes before fouling out against San Diego. In two games against BYU, the junior went 20-for-28 (71.4 percent) from the field with 46 points. In the last four games, Jacko is averaging 22.3 ppg and 7.4 rpg. The Lions are 10-12 on the season and 3-8 in the WCC as the second half of conference play continues. • On Jan. 23 against the Cougars, he finished the game 11-for-12 from the field, equaling the all-time LMU record for shooting percentage in a game (91.6 percent - 10 or more attempts). Victor Lazzaretti with 11-for-12 against Pepperdine on Feb. 25, 1987 and Mike Yoest did it against Marquette on Jan. 6, 1988. Jacko is fifth in the WCC in double-doubles and moved to eighth in scoring at 15.7 ppg, 5th in shooting at 55.0 percent, ninth in rebounds at 6.5 and fifth in offensive rebounds at 2.5. Jacko’s first double-double, a 22-point and 10-rebound effort in the season opener, was the first double-double by an LMU player in his first game as a Lion against an NCAA Division I program in 35 years. • LMU continues to lead the league in turnover margin at +2.5, ranking second in the WCC in creating 14.5 turnovers a game while turning the ball over just 12.0 times per game, third in the WCC. In the first meeting against USD, the Lions forced 17 USD turnovers while having just five themselves, a season
