Pilots Up Next as Home Stand Continues Saturday LMU men’s basketball will continue their home stand in West Coast Conference play when they take on Portland on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 3 pm. Pregame will feature the Greek Life New Member Tailgate Party on Hannon Field with the Wahoo’s and Hungry Lion food trucks. The game is presented by the Loyolan, who will feature a President Snyder Bobblehead. LMU will also pay tribute to the Wounded Warrior Project and at halftime the Lions will honor the 2016 LMU Women’s Volleyball Team, who advanced to this year’s NCAA Sweet 16. THE MATCH-UP • This will be the 96th meeting between Portland and LMU. The Lions hold a 26-15 edge in Los Angeles. Conference play begin with the Pilots on Dec. 21. LMU’s defense seemed to be doing what it does best, creating turnovers and turning them into points. It helped them to a 15-6 lead over Portland in the West Coast Conference opener with just over 13 minutes to play in the first. However, the three-pointer took over and the Pilots ran away with a 87-60 victory at the Chiles Center. The Pilots buried 10 first half three-pointers, eight in the final 10 minutes of the opening frame, and went on their way to finish with 14-for-33 (42.4 percent) for the win. They finished shooting 50.8 percent (31-for-61) for the game while the Lions (7-5, 0-1) hit just 36.4 percent (24-for-66). Brandon Brown finished with 16 points and Steven Haney had 13. Bryce Pressley did the majority of the damage for the Pilots, hitting 7-for-13 from three to finish with 25 points. Jarrel Marshall was the only other Pilot in double figures with 12. The Pilots finished the game out-rebounding the Lions 47-30 and had a 15-11 edge in second chance points. The Lions hit 7-for-20 from three but went just 5-for-13 from the free throw line. Portland went 11-for-13 from the charity stripe. The second game of the season between the two teams will be broadcast on the LMU Sports Network through TheW.tv. It will also be live on KXLU 88.9 FM. INSIDE THE LIONS • The West Coast Conference named LMU junior Adom Jacko as Player of the Week for Jan. 25. He averaged 24.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in two games at Gersten Pavilion. He continued that stretch in the return trip to BYU and San Diego. In two games against BYU, the junior went 20-for-28 (71.4 percent) from the field with 46 points. He had 20 more against San Diego and then on Thursday against Gonzaga, he had 23 points and seven rebounds. He has had 20 or more points in the last five games, averaging 22.4 ppg and 7.3 rpg in that stretch. His five consecutive 20-point games is the longest since Drew Viney from February 16-March 4, 2011. Viney and Jacko are the only two LMU players this century with five consecutive 20-point games. The last player with six consecutive 20-point games was Haywood Eaddy, from January 15-January 30, 1999. • On Jan. 23 against the Cougars, Jacko finished the game 11-for-12 from the field, equaling the all-time LMU record for shooting percentage in a game (91.6 percent - 10 or more attempts). Victor Lazzaretti with 11-for-12 against Pepperdine on Feb. 25, 1987 and Mike Yoest did it against Marquette on Jan. 6, 1988. Jacko is fifth in the WCC in double-doubles and moved to seventh in scoring at 16.0 ppg, 5th in shooting at 55.3 percent, ninth in rebounds at 6.5 and sixth in offensive rebounds at 2.5. Jacko’s first double-double, a 22-point and 10-rebound effort in the season opener, was the first double-double by an LMU player in his first game as a Lion against an NCAA Division I program in 35 years. • LMU continues to lead the league in turnover margin at +2.3, ranking first in the WCC in creating 14.3
