WCC Tourney Begins with Toreros on Friday LMU men’s basketball enters the 2016 West Coast Conference Basketball Championships on back-toback overtime wins and will open play in this year’s tournament against San Diego on Friday, Mar. 4 at 6 pm. The game will be live on BYUtv and online at TheW.tv. All the LMU tournament games will be on KXLU 88.9 FM. THE MATCH-UP • Like they did this season, the all-time series between LMU and San Diego is dead even at 46-46. The two teams earned victories on their home court, with the Lions earning a 67-63 win on Jan. 23 and then a week later, the Toreros claiming a 77-69 win in San Diego. USD has won all three of the previous match-ups in the WCC tournament, the last coming on Mar. 6, 2009, 62-56, at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. .. The Lions won the first match-up thanks to a 18-5 edge in points off turnovers, forcing USD into 17 while having a season low five themselves. Adom Jacko had 23 points to lead the Lions in the win. In the second meeting, USD outscored the Lions 18-3 in the final seven minutes of the game to earn a come-from-behind victory. The Lions made just two of their last 19 shots and USD, who is ninth in the WCC with just 6.3 three-pointers per game, hit 10-for-20 from long distance. Jacko had 20 points while Marcus Harris erupted for 23 to lead USD... The Lions finished in a tie for 7th in the WCC at 6-12 (13-16 overall) while the Toreros where 10th at 4-14 (9-20 overall). The Lions are the eighth seed in the tournament after Portland earned the tiebreaker for the seventh seed. USD is the ninth seed. Jacko was named second-team while Brown was honorable mention... The Lions are 3-1 in overtime on the season, earning back-to-back extra session victories to end the regular season. It is the first time since the 2003-04 season the Lions played back-to-back overtime games and the first time since the 1975-76 season they won back-to-back OT games, defeating Saint Mary’s (84-77) on Feb. 19, 1976 and Nevada (71-69) on Feb. 21... In the overtime win over USF on Feb. 20, the Lions won 100-87, hitting the century mark in the win over USF, the first time they have done that against conference foe since Saint Mary’s on Jan. 29, 1999. • The Lions have stepped it up throughout the line-up while All-WCC selection Adom Jacko has missed the last four games with a back injury. The most notable have been senior Marin Mornar and junior Shamar Johnson. Johnson, who averages 5.4 ppg and 4.3 rpg on the season, had a career-best 18 points and nine rebounds in the double overtime win over Pepperdine. In the last four games, he is averaging 13.0 ppg and 6.0 rpg.
