THE LMU TENNIS CENTER
2016-17 LMU WOMEN’S TENNIS RECORD BOOK
HEAD COACH JAMIE SANCHEZ
The Loyola Marymount University Tennis Center has been home to Lion tennis for more than 30 years, and since undergoing reconstruction in 2003, the Tennis Center has become a great place to both watch and play tennis.
Agustin Moreno was named head coach of the women’s tennis program on June 28, 2015. He becomes the second coach in program history.
The long-awaited sixth tennis court, the critical tournament court for the Loyola Marymount University Tennis Center was finished in December of 2003. The final court gives LMU a full six court facility that is home to one of the top programs on the West Coast.
The 2015-16 season with be Moreno’s first with the Lions and he is coming off nine-plus seasons leading South Florida’s program, guiding them to a pair of conference championships and six NCAA tournament appearances.
Construction of the sixth court was due to a $50,000 gift from A.G. [BusAdmin `72] and Kathleen Kading. The tournament court is named in honor of the Kading’s fathers Morris A. Pivaroff and George P. Kading.
“I am very excited to be the head coach at LMU,” said Moreno, the native of Guadalajara, Mexico, who played in the 1988 Olympics and 1988 French Open. “I think this is a great opportunity. It is a program that should have high expectations of success. As we get started, our goal will be to win a conference title and then as we progress, to go for a national title.”
“The building of a sixth tennis court is another example of the commitment of the university and its supporters toward building a championship athletics program,” said Athletics Director Bill Husak. “It is a visible example of our efforts to create quality facilities for our student-athletes to practice and compete in and for our fans to cheer them to victory.”
In Moreno’s nine seasons at USF, the Bulls amassed a 127-75 dual match record (.628), claimed the 2013 American Athletic Conference Championship, 2007 BIG EAST Championship -- USF’s first in the conference in any sport-- and made six NCAA Tournaments. In the 2014 season, the Bulls were undefeated at home and amassed 15 straight wins.
Former women’s coach Jamie Sanchez notes the importance of this gift for their teams. “We have five courts, the addition of the tournament court is pragmatic because it allows us to have six singles matches competing simultaneously, which enables LMU to host matches and tournaments against top-ranked universities,” said Sanchez.
“We are excited about the prospect of Agustin leading our women’s tennis program. His background as an accomplished player and respected coach at both the national and international levels is particularly attractive,” said Husak. “With LMU’s location, weather, facilities and educational opportunities, Agustin believes that we should be a destination for the best players in the country and world. I look forward to Agustin attracting top caliber student-athletes and developing them into a successful team.”
“The Kading family believes that supporting athletics is important for the growth of the university and its long term value,” said Kading. “Athletics will only bring the university prestige based on exposure. It will help with recruiting the most talented student-athletes, but we still have a long way to go.” Gifts given by Erik Doyle [BBA `84], a former men’s tennis player, and the Ron Labetich family, parents of two tennis alumni, ensured naming rights to two of the remaining five courts. The final three courts were named late in 2006, with the Dempsey Family Court (court four), the Bodkin Family Court (court five), and the Jamie Sanchez Court (court six) all being unveiled. Improvements are on-going to the facility, as a new blue surface was added prior to the 2013-14 season and a scoreboard was installed in the fall of 2006. The board features individual court scoring controlled by seperate wireless remotes. The board also keeps track of the overall match score. It features 15-inch red LED displays that are easily seen from the end of the sixth court.

Moreno led 10 players to a total of 16 all-conference (BIG EAST) honors, including two who were named the conference Player of the Year. Moreno was named the league’s coach of the year in 2007 as well. “This is a great fit for me because LMU is located in Southern California, and it is a great place for tennis. It is a great location to recruit,” said Moreno. “The school has great academics, the campus is beautiful and it is just perfect for any female tennis player around the world to attend and have a great student-athlete experience.” Moreno made the move to South Florida from the University of Georgia, where he served as assistant coach for three years alongside head coach Manuel Diaz. While at Georgia, Moreno helped start the recruiting process of current ATP pro John Isner and he worked with the former Bulldog from 2003-2005.

2016-17 LMU WOMEN’S TENNIS RECORD BOOK
ALL-TIME ROSTER Moreno was in the national spotlight when he helped Georgia advance to the NCAA Championship Quarterfinals in 2004-05 and concluded the year ranked No. 7 in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll. The roster featured the No. 1 ranked and NCAA Champion doubles tandem and several other nationally ranked singles players. Prior to Georgia, Moreno spent two seasons as an assistant at Texas Christian University, helping the Horned Frogs to a No. 2 national ranking and a Western Athletic Conference championship. TCU concluded the year 24-4 and advanced to the semifinals of both the ITA National Indoor Championship and NCAA Championship. Moreno’s extensive coaching resume also includes a wealth of international experience guiding women’s programs. For five years he served as the head coach of the Mexican Women’s Federation Cup Team (1999-2003) and during that time he also mentored Mexico’s Women’s Continental Cup Team (2001), an 18-and-under squad, and Women’s Pan-American Team (2004). The Federation Cup is the women’s equivalent of the Davis Cup on the men’s side. Moreno’s international experience also includes a stint as an assistant with the Mexican Davis Cup Team. He also directed the Mexican 14-and-under World Youth Cup squad in Japan. Moreno played one season (1985-86) at Pepperdine, earning a No. 4 national ranking in doubles and helping the Waves to the national indoor title and an appearance in the NCAA Championship title match. Before arriving at Pepperdine, he was ranked No. 1 in the world in doubles as a junior and was the doubles champion at Junior Wimbledon in 1985. Moreno enjoyed a successful professional career on the ATP tour, which spanned from 1987-1994. He was a doubles semifinalist at the 1988 French Open and also participated in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea. Moreno was a member of Mexico’s Davis Cup Team (1985-94) and owns career singles wins over Thomas Muster and Petr Korda. A 2002 graduate of Texas Christian University, Moreno earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations. Moreno is married to the former Beatriz Lomei. The couple have two sons, Agustin and Daniel.
