ABOUT PEPPERDINE Pepperdine enters West Coast Conference play sporting a 6-6 record and has lost four of its last five matches ... the record does not fully reflect the level of play for the Waves, as the last three Pepperdine losses came at the hands of #11 UCLA and back-to-back setbacks at #15 Hawaii ... Nikki Lyons paces the attack with 104 kills (2.31 per set), while the Waves are hitting .178 receiving sets from Heidi Dyer and Maddie Dilfer who have dished out 240 (5.22 per set) and 176 assists (4.00 per set), respectively ... Tarah Wylie is a threat from the service area, collecting 16 aces to lead Pepperdine to 53 as a team (1.10 per set) ... Wylie is also a force on the block, posting 44 total blocks (0.96 per set) to place second only to Jasmine Gross with 50 blocks (1.11 per set) ... the Waves have amassed 105 total blocks (2.19 per set) ... Pepperdine is led by second-year head coach Scott Wong. WELLS FARGO PCH CUP Separated by 19.1 miles of scenic coastline, longtime cross-town adversaries Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine came together in an effort to boost their decades-long rivalry with the creation of the Wells Fargo Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) Cup ... the series, which is in its eighth year, serves as an annual scorecard for the NCAA-sponsored athletic contests between the Lions and Waves ... any head-to-head competition, including matches in the post-season and tournaments throughout the year, will be counted toward the scoring and added to the scorecard as they occur ... for the sports in which the two teams do not meet head-to-head, the teams will battle for points that will be awarded on the basis of overall finish at their respective post-season championships ... Pepperdine currently leads the 2016-17 standings, 1.5-0 ... the Waves have won six of the first seven cups (LMU won in 2014-15) ... to learn more about the PCH Cup and view the current scorecard, please visit: lmulions.com/pchcup

LET’S SETTLE THIS ON NEUTRAL GROUND LMU has historically been extremely impressive in matches played at neutral sites, in which neither team is playing on their home court ... the Lions, who are 4-0 so far this year in neutral matches, went 4-1 in neutral matches last year after finishing 2014 with the same 4-1 record ... LMU was 1-1 in neutral contests in 2013 after finishing 2-3 in 2012 ... 2011 saw the Lions go 4-2 in neutral matches, while they were 6-2 in 2010 ... overall, LMU is 126-59 (.681) in neutral contests since the 1983 season, including having posted perfect neutral records in eight of those 33 seasons ... over that span, LMU has had only five seasons with losing records in neutral matches.

PICKED BEFORE THE SERVE The West Coast Conference released its preseason All-WCC selections, and LMU’s Sarah Sponcil and Jamie Lea were honored ... Six programs placed at least one student-athlete on the preseason squad, with Santa Clara leading the way with three selections … Sponcil was named a 2015 AVCA All-Region and honorable mention All-American after taking home first team All-WCC honors … she led the Lions in kills with 447 at a rate of 3.58 per set while notching a team-best 36 aces (0.29 per set) and 363 digs (2.90 per set) … Lea, who managed double-digit kills in all but seven matches, appeared in 32 of LMU’s 33 matches and collected 425 kills to finish second on the team in her first season as a Lion .. the native of Efland, N.C. averaged 3.57 kills per set while taking 1,113 swings and amassing eight block solos and 45 block assists to average 0.45 blocks per set.

WINS FOR THE AGES LMU has managed a few streak-stopping victories over the last two-plus years, most notably defeating Stanford, BYU, UCLA, San Diego and Long Beach State ... the Lions’ latest accomplishment was a road sweep at then-#6 Stanford on 12/4/15 to advance to the 2015 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 ... the victory over the Cardinal was the first in program history, as the Lions had previously gone 0-3 and never won a set ... Stanford was also the highest-ranked opponent to be fall to the Lions (previous: 3-2 at #9 Hawaii on 9/23/05) ... LMU posted a five-set victory over then-No. 12 BYU on 10/24/15, marking the first win over the Cougars in program history (1-11) ... prior to LMU’s sweep of UCLA on 8/30/14, the Bruins had won seven straight matches over the Lions ... the all-time series now stands at 11-3 in favor of UCLA, as the Lions swept the Bruins for the second straight year on 8/30/15, but dropped a match to UCLA on 8/27 this year ... 2015’s victory over UCLA came on the road, and was the first on the road for LMU at UCLA since December 4, 1986 (3-2) while playing in the NCAA Tournament ... eight of the 11 UCLA victories in the series have been sweeps ... the Lions also recorded a victory over Long Beach State on 9/11/14, snapping a seven-match skid for the Lions against the 49ers ... the last Lion victory over LBSU came on 9/10/94 ... the road victory for LMU was also the first over Long Beach State since 11/17/87 ... LMU swept then-No. 23 San Diego on 9/30/14 ... that victory snapped a 16-match losing streak to the Toreros (last victory: 10/28/05) ... LMU was just 6-26 over the previous 32 matches against USD ... the sweep of USD was also the first for the Lions since 11/18/95.

U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A! After completing his third year serving as LMU head volleyball coach in 2012, Tom Black accepted an assistant coach position under head coach Karch Kiraly with the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team ... Black, who has continued in his head coaching duties at LMU while serving on the Team USA staff, helped guide the United States to a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics by way of a victory over Netherlands ... under his title with the National Team, Black’s primary responsibility was working with the setters and the team offense. GET OFF ON THE RIGHT PAW The Lions have had a knack for coming out of the gates strong in recent memory, having won 17 of their last 20 season-openers, including a four-set win over Illinois State this year … LMU did drop a four-set match to Virginia to start the 2015 campaign ... the only other losses over that span came in 2007 to St. John’s and then-No. 10 USC in 2010 ... LMU has recorded 10 sweeps and won in four sets on six occasions. THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME One of Southern California’s premier athletic facilities, Albert Gersten Pavilion is in its 35th year as home of the Loyola Marymount volleyball in 2016 ... since opening night, the Pavilion has become one of toughest places to play in the West Coast Conference ... the volleyball Lions first moved into the facility in 1982, and recorded 14 wins in Gersten’s inaugural season ... since 1982, the Lions have posted an overall record of 299-155 (.659) in the friendly confines of the Pavilion … LMU, which is 4-1 so far this year at home, went 10-4 at home in 2015 ... in conference play, the record is even more impressive with a 151-71 (.680) home record in WCC action ... in 34 years, the 1996 (WCC volleyball championship team and Sweet Sixteen participant) and 2003 (NCAA second round appearance) squads have been the most successful with 14-1 marks, for .933 winning percentages.

IT’S JUST A NUMBER With a victory over No. 24 Pepperdine on November 8, 2012, LMU snapped a streak of 36 straight losses to ranked opponents (previous victory: 10/5/06 at #12 Santa Clara) ... LMU finished that year 1-5 against ranked foes before going 0-4 in such matches in 2013 ... the 2014 season went much better when the Lions were pit against Top-25 squads, as LMU went 2-2 on the year ... last year, LMU was 4-2 against ranked opponents after beating #20 UCLA (8/30), #12 BYU (10/24), #13 Colorado State (12/3) and #6 Stanford (12/4) … so far this year, the Lions are 0-1, dropping a four-setter to #12 UCLA on 8/27.

SURVEY SAYS In a preseason poll of the Conference’s 10 head coaches, LMU was selected to finish fourth in the West Coast Conference in 2016 ... after making its sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament and 19th overall, San Diego was picked as the favorite to win the Championship … the top three teams were separated by 11 votes, with 10 points separating the Toreros from the three-time defending WCC champion and 2015 NCAA Sweet-16 participant BYU … Santa Clara, LMU, Pepperdine, Pacific, Portland, Saint Mary’s, Gonzaga and San Francisco followed.

WCC WELL-REPRESENTED For the second straight year, four West Coast Conference volleyball programs advanced to the 2015 NCAA Tournament ... No. 11 BYU, the 2015 WCC Regular-Season Champions, joined LMU, San Diego and Santa Clara for the second straight season as qualifiers ... BYU, which like the Lions reached the Sweet 16 in 2015, played for the National Championship in 2014 ... the four teams selected is the largest contingent of WCC programs to advance to the NCAA Tournament since 2012 when BYU, LMU, Pepperdine, Saint Mary’s, San Diego and Santa Clara all qualified.

HEAD COACH

TOM BLACK AVCA D-II Pacific Region Coach of the Year and CCAA Co-Coach of the Year. That season also produced the first of two CCAA Players of the Year under Black’s guidance, as Nicole Courtney earned the honor.

SEVENTH SEASON AT LMU

USA National Team Assistant Coach Since 2013 | Bronze Medal in Rio Guided LMU to NCAA Tournament in 2012, 2014 and 2015 | 2015 NCAA Sweet Sixteen 3 AVCA All-Americans & 5 AVCA All-Region Picks at LMU | 16 All-WCC Selections at LMU Tom Black enters his seventh season as LMU’s head coach with the start of the 2016 fall indoor volleyball season after being hired on January 19th, 2010. Serving as a coach since its inception, including the first four as head coach, Black recently completed his fifth year with the LMU sand volleyball program in the spring of 2016. Black guided LMU to just its second NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2015, marking the third trip in the last four years for the Lions, and the 13th overall in program history. Black’s 2015 squad finished the year 24-9 overall and 13-5 in the WCC (T-3rd). The 24 victories were the most for the Lions since recording 26 in 2003, while the third-place finish was the best for the Lions since finishing third in 2003. In arguably the biggest win in LMU history, LMU, which was one of four WCC teams to make the tournament, swept #6 Stanford on the road to advance to the Sweet 16 - the highest-ranked opponent to ever fall to the Lions. The Lions won 15 of their last 18 matches, including five of their final six to make the historic run. Following the tremendous year, Black saw three of his players honored by the AVCA, including Sarah Sponcil being named an AVCA honorable mention All-American. While Sponcil was also named AVCA All-Region, seniors Hannah Tedrow and Rachelle Suaava earned honorable mention All-Region nods. The trio also garnered All-WCC honors, with Sponcil and Tedrow taking home first team selections. Black’s 24 victories handed him back-to-back 20+ win seasons, marking the first time for LMU since 1999-00. Black’s Lions also posted 10+ WCC wins in consecutive years for the first time since 1996-97. Earning a personal milestone, Black collected win #100 as head coach at LMU with a five-set victory over Saint Mary’s on 10/29. Working with some of the top athletes in the country, Black has been extremely active with the US Women’s National Team, culminating in his selection as an assistant coach with the team in March of 2013. Black has continued in his head coach role at LMU throughout his term on the Team USA staff, which included a trip to the 2016 Rio Olympics. In Rio, Black helped guide the United States at a bronze medal at the Olympics by way of a 25-23, 25-27, 25-22, 25-19 victory over Netherlands. Prior to being named as an assistant within the program, Black spent three consecutive summers as a consultant coach as the National Team prepared for the 2012 London Games. Under his title, Black primarily assisted in the training sessions at the American Sports Center, working alongside the likes of Hugh McCutcheon, Karch Kiraly and Paula Weishoff. With Black on staff, and with Marv Dunphy filling his role in Italy while the LMU season was underway, Team USA made history in October of 2014, beating China 3-1 (27-25, 25-20, 16-25, 26-24) and winning the first world championship gold medal for the U.S. Women’s program at the FIVB World Championship at the Mediolanum Forum in Milan. Black, serving as setters coach, helped Team USA setter Alisha Glass to being named best setter in the world by the FIVB at the end of world championships. The U.S. Women had never before won gold at any of the three major international volleyball events: World Championship, World Cup or Olympic Games. The USA National Team went on to win the 2015 World Grand Prix Championship and a Bronze Medal at the World Cup. Continuing to produce the top setters at these events, Molly Krakow was named the best setter at the World Grand Prix. Black’s 2014 LMU squad, which finished the year 23-8 overall and 11-7 in the WCC (fifth), entered the AVCA national rankings for the first time since 2004 on September 15 (#23), and held a national ranking for five weeks. The squad began the year at 12-0, the best re-

cord to start a year in program history (previous: 10-0 | 2003), and reached 20 wins for the first time since 2003 (26-7). Taking advantage of home-court, LMU started the year 7-0 at home, the best mark since the 2003 squad went 12-0 at home to start the season. The Lions finished 11-3 in Gersten in 2014, marking the best home record since recording the same record in 2004. Seniors Caitlin DeWitt and Litara Keil were joined by junior Hannah Tedrow on the 2014 first team All-WCC squad, while freshmen Sarah Sponcil and Kristen Castellanos earned All-Freshmen honors. Keil and Tedrow would later be named Pacific South All-Region and honorable mention All-Americans, while Sponcil took home LMU’s first ever Region Freshman of the Year selection.

over, the 2006 Tachikara/AVCA D-II Pacific Region Coach of the Year watched 20 of his student-athletes garner California Collegiate Athletic Association All-Conference recognition, capped by five selections in 2009. Over his five years, Black posted a career record of 115-29, good for a .799 winning percentage, and saw his teams ranked in the AVCA Top-25 of every week for his final four seasons. Black’s 2009 Triton squad finished with an overall record of 29-3 and was ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation en route to a spot in the NCAA West Region semifinals. The Tritons’ 2009 trip to the postseason marked the fourth consecutive visit over Black’s fiveyear tenure at UC San Diego, while the No. 7 final national ranking was the second top-10 finish for Black at UCSD. Black also saw three of his student-athletes earn AVCA All-America recognition in his final year, including Sylvia Schmidt, who took home a CCAA Player of the Year award, the second such recipient under Black’s guidance.

On the sand, Black built a strong program that entered the 2015 season ranked #5 in the nation according to Dig Beach Volleyball Magazine. LMU’s top pair in 2014, Betsi Metter and Litara Keil, reached the Final Four of the AVCA Pairs Championships en route to becoming the first sand volleyball All-Americans in LMU history. No stranger to the Pairs Championship, Keil also made the tournament playing with Felicia Arriola in 2013. Metter, teamed with then-freshman Sarah Sponcil, returned to the National Championships in 2015, reaching the Championship match before finishing as runner-ups and All-Americans.

In 2008, the Tritons handed their rival, then-No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino, its first loss of the year and qualified for the NCAA Tournament. UCSD won over 20 games for the 25th time in school history that year, while Black guided Rebecca Bailey to the school’s all-time career kills mark and her second consecutive All-American bid.

Black’s 2012 indoor squad broke a six-year drought for LMU in the NCAA Tournament, as the Lions earned an at-large bid to play in the Tournament for the first time since 2005. The Lions finished the year with an 18-13 overall record and an 8-8 mark in the WCC (sixth) to earn the nod. A testament to the strength of the West Coast Conference, LMU was one of six WCC teams to make the tournament. Four of Black’s players earned All-WCC honors at the conclusion of the year, including Betsi Metter who took home her second WCC Defensive Player of the Year selection and an honorable mention bid. Black also guided Kathleen Luft to a first team All-WCC selection after the outside hitter led the conference with 474 kills at a rate of 4.16 per set.

In 2007, the Tritons knocked off the No. 2 team in the country on the road and advanced to the NCAA Pacific Region Semifinals. Also, the 2007 Tritons had an All-American and four student-athletes on the CCAA All-Conference squad. Just one year after taking the reins at UC San Diego, Black directed the Tritons back to the postseason in 2006, finishing the year with a 26-3 overall record, a NCAA Elite Eight appearance, a NCAA Pacific Regional Championship and a final national ranking of No. 5. For his efforts, Black was named the 2006 Tachikara/

After guiding LMU to that initial run to the Tournament in 2012, Black helped LMU to a 14-14 record and an 8-10 mark in the WCC en route to a sixth-place finish in 2013. The season was highlighted by the third straight selection of Metter as WCC Defensive Player of the Year and an honorable mention All-WCC honoree. Luft and Keil were also lauded by the WCC, earning a firstteam and honorable mention selection, respectively. Metter, Black’s first recruit after being named LMU head coach, finished her career as LMU’s all-time leader in digs and aces, amassing 1,802 digs and 170 aces over a four-year career.

Prior to his stint with the Trojans, he spent the 2002 and 2003 seasons as the men’s head coach at Pierce Junior College in Woodland Hills, Calif. He also was an assistant in 2003 with the Pierce women’s team. His men’s squads won the 2002 and 2003 California state junior college crowns, finishing 15-3 in 2002 and 17-2 in 2003.
