• A GRAND FINALE: Senior Anthony Ireland enters his final season all over the record books at LMU with the projection to do even more. He enters the season as a Preseason All-WCC selection and is: • 2014 Senior CLASS Award Candidate • Watch-list for the Bob Cousy Award • Preseason Lou Henson Award All-American • WCC Best Player Selection (sbnation and College Hoops Journal) • One of nation’s most unknow top players (CBS) • First-team All-WCC preseason by various publications (Lindy’s, Sporting News) Ireland has not missed a game in his three-year career, playing in all 102 of the games LMU has played the last three-plus years. He has done this while losing a tooth during a game, not missing a second in the process against Alaska-Anchorage; playing the season needing knee surgery as a junior; needing stitches in his lower lip during a game as a sophomore. As the Lions’ lone scoring threat in 2012-13, he was the target of opposing defenses who played aggressive against him, sending him to the line 203 times, ranked 12th all-time in LMU history. “Despite the aggressive play against him, Ireland never raised his hands after a three, never raised his voice to an offical and always shook hands with those after the game,” said Head Coach Max Good, who has coached for more than 45 years. He states “Anthony is one of the strongest willed and most humble players I have ever coached”... In playing every game LMU has played in his career, Ireland was named LMU’s first NABC All-District selection as a sophomore and was a Lou Henson Preseason All-American and honorable mention Jesuit All-American in 2011-12. In the last two seasons, Ireland has played 2,515 of a possible 2,755 minutes (91.2 percent), leading the Lions in scoring in 30 of 34 games last season. He led LMU to three straight WCC tourney wins last year, falling to No. 1 Gonzaga in the semifinals. He was named first-team WCC All-Tourney as a result. • Ireland averaged 29.5 minutes in the first two games, a good seven minutes below his average the last two seasons of 36.9 minutes per game, the most in the West Coast Conference. Ireland, who was 14th in the NCAA last season in scoring at 20.2 ppg, finished playing just 22 minutes against GCU, fewest since the fourth game of his career (19 minutes vs. Dowling on Nov. 20, 2010). His first field goal of the game with 9:43 to play in game gave LMU a 61-55 lead. However, he would pick up his fourth foul with with 8:51 to play and would leave the game. He re-entered the game with 4:06 to play and the Lions down 66-65. He would score six points with the assist on the winner, finishing with a team-high 14 points. • While the Lions feature 10 total underclassmen on their 16-man roster, they have plenty of experience. Seniors Anthony Ireland, Ayodeji Egbeyemi, Alex Osborne and Godwin Okonji enter the 2013-14 season having played a combined 372 games in an LMU uniform. After the weekend, Ireland has played all 102 games LMU has played in during his career, playing nearly 92 percent of the available minutes the last two years. Egbeyemi has played in 85 games, while Osborne and Okonji near the century mark with 95 and 96, respectively. Okonji, who was injured in the car accident on Oct. 30 (See LMULions.com for more information), remains out indefinately. • The Lions improved to 3-2 in season openers under Head Coach Max Good, winning the last three. 1955-56. This is the third time since the current coaching staff took over the program that they opened the season in a tournament. In 2008 it was the BTI Invitational at Iowa State and in 2009 it was at Montana’s Grizzly Classic. LMU will play in a pair of non-conference tournaments this season, making it the 13th straight year the Lions have made an appearance in a regular-season tournament. LMU will also play in the Ezybonds Virgin Islands Paradise Jam on Nov. 22-25. MORE FROM 2012-13 • Max Good, who is in his sixth season in 2013-14, enters the season fifth all-time in program history in wins (66 - as of 11/9/13), sixth in conference wins (23) and second in WCC tournament wins (6). Good led the Lions to a 21-13 mark and its second postseason appearance in three years in 2011-12, LMU’s Centennial year. That season set standards going back to the Lions’ Elite Eight team of 1989-90, including its first 20-win season, the most conference wins (11), most home wins (12), and the best road record (9-4), defeating a pair of ranked teams away from home (UCLA, Saint Mary’s). The 21 wins was the fourth most in school history and the 11 WCC wins is tied with the 1967-68 team for the third most. The Lions won a pair of games in the postseason, the first postseason wins since that Elite Eight team. Good was named WCC Coach of the Year following the Lions’ success that season. • In 2012-13, LMU men’s basketball earned three straight wins at the WCC Championships to advance to the semifinals for the second time in four years. BYU excluded, only LMU, Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s have gone to the quarterfinals and beyond in each of the last four WCC tournaments. • Last year, Anthony Ireland finished second in the WCC and 14th nationally with 20.2 ppg in 2012-13. He finished with 688 points, seventh all-time at LMU and just the 15th time someone has scored at least 600 points in a single season in LMU history. Ireland is the first Lion to earn back-to-back first-team All-WCC honors since 2007 and is just the second junior to do it all-time (Hank Gathers). • The 2012-13 season saw men’s basketball claim the most WCC All-Academic Selections (Ashley Hamilton, Ayodeji Egbeyemi, Taylor Walker) in program history. During Coach Good’s tenure, the Lions have graduated all 17 seniors who have completed their eligibility. Fifth-year senior Alex Osborne is the fourth Lion during Good’s tenure to be working on his master’s degree while still playing (Hamilton, Teel, Diederichs). He graduated with his Bachelor’s in Economics in May of 2013 and is currently in the Master’s of Education Studies program. • The Lions have had at least two members on the All-WCC teams in four of the last five seasons, their first NABC All-District and Jesuit All-American (Ireland), five 1,000-point scorers (Viney, DuBois, Teel, Ireland, Hamilton), and a pair of players go for 1,000 points and 500 rebounds (Viney, Hamilton), just the 13th and 14th time that has happened. • The Lions finished the 2013-13 season at 11-23 overall, suffering a heartbreaking 14-game skid to end the regular season and then winning the three straight at the WCC tournament. In that skid, 10 of the setbacks were by single digits and nine of the 10 were a single possession game with less than two minutes to play. Those 10 games were decided by a total of 44 points, 4.4 per game. The Lions were 3-10 in games decided by less than 10 points since the start of the year (6-14 for the entire season) and 3-6 in games decided by four or less against conference foes, winning their last two. Here is a look at some of them: • Mar. 8 vs. SCU - 60-58:.......... Ireland scores with 5.6 left, SCU misses front end of 1-n-1 as Lions win 60-58. • Mar. 7 vs. USF - 61-60 (ot):.... LMU holds USF to 1-7 shooting in OT and hold off Dons in final seconds. • Mar. 2 vs. BYU - 70-73:.......... Lions erased 15-point deficit, but BYU hits free throws to clinch it. • Feb. 23 at Cal Poly - 60-63: ... Mustangs hit a three with 0.7 left for 63-60 win. • Feb. 21 vs. USF - 59-61: ........ Dons hits driving lay-up with 0.5 left for 61-59 win. • Feb. 14 at PEP - 50-52: ......... Trailing 51-50 with 26 seconds left with ball, Lions can’t get shot off. • Feb. 7 at POR - 60-69: ........... Lions cut lead to 60-58 on Walker lay-in with 1:52 left. Pilots hit three 1:11 to play to pull away. • Feb. 4 vs. USD - 68-69 (ot): ... With one-point lead, Lions miss front end of 1-and-1 with 5.1 left, and USD gets lay-in with 0.2. • Jan. 24 vs. PEP - 57-60: ........ 9-0 run cuts Waves lead to 59-57 with 2:41 to play. No field goals rest of way for either team. • Jan. 19 at USF - 53-62:.......... English cuts Dons lead to 55-52 with 1:56 to play but USF goes 7-for-8 FTs rest of the way. • Jan. 12 vs. POR - 64-68:........ Ireland cuts lead to 66-64 with :38 seconds to play but Pilots score with :11 left to win it, 68-64.

AGAINST THE RANKED For the first time since 1989, the Lions faced the nation’s top-ranked team when they faced Gonzaga in the WCC semifinals. Fittingly, the last time the Lions had to face a No. 1 was actually in Las Vegas. In the historic 1989-90 season, LMU would open with preseason No. 1 UNLV on Nov. 15, 1989, falling 102-91. LMU has played a No. 1 (AP only) six times, five of them com-

The Lions went 3-2 in 2011-12 against ranked opponents, earning a win at #16 Saint Mary’s on Feb. 15. The five ranked opponents was the most since the 2008-09 season when they played five. INTERNATIONAL CONNECTION The Lions’ roster in 2013-14 will have a strong international flavor that includes Nigeria natives Godwin Okonji and Ayodeji Egbeyemi, Marin Mornar from Croatia and newcomer Patson Siame, who is from Luanshya, Zambia. A big reason behind the Lions’ international push has been Associate Head Coach Myke Scholl. Scholl, who holds a law degree from Maryland, has worked with basketball programs in the U.S. Virgin Islands, at the junior college level in northern California, with the South Africa National and Under-20 teams, the Senegal Men’s National Team, with a professional team in South Africa and as a scout for the Detroit Pistons. Eight years prior to LMU, Scholl was the Director of Sports and International Programs for Miles and Associates International in Johannesburg, South Africa. He managed the creation and implementation of the largest HIV and AIDS prevention campaigns in the world called “Love Life,” funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Kaiser Foundation. He was also active in the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders program, and he established the first national high school basketball league in South Africa with 1,800 boys and 1,800 girls teams that included more than 42,000 participants. He also supervised the construction and development of 500 basketball courts throughout Africa, developed a high school basketball league and motivational program called “Success by Choice” and managed the implementation of the program in South Africa, Zambia, Uganda and Kenya.

2011-12. The first overtime game in LMU history came in the 1926-27 season against California Christian College, a 16-14 win for the Lions. The longest game in LMU history was a five-overtime affair against Fresno State in 1957. The Lions lost 92-90. LAST TIME AGAINST THE 49ERS It has become expected in the series between LMU and Long Beach State. The series has had late comebacks, uptempo play from the opening tip-off and seven of the last 13 have gone down to the final seconds. They were at it again as the up-and-down affair saw the 49ers (3-3) erase an 11-point first half deficit and then go on a late 8-0 run to earn a 73-70 win over the Lions (34) at Gersten Pavilion. The Lions were led by Ashley Hamilton with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Ayodeji Egbeyemi had his second career doubledouble with 16 points and 11 rebounds. C.J. Balckwell had 15 points, hitting 5-for-8 from three. The 49ers held the Lions’ leading scorer Anthony Ireland, who entered the week ranked ninth nationally at 23.5 per game, to just nine points on 4-of-14 shooting. Mike Caffey led four 49ers (3-3) in double figures with 15. James Ennis added 14, while Deng Deng had 14 and Kris Gulley had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. HEAD COACH

MAX GOOD Inside info:

• Sixth Season at LMU • 66-98 at LMU • 22nd Season overall • 308-321 overall

L

MU Head Coach Max Good, who officially took over the program as the 25th coach in school history on Jan. 12, 2009, continues to put the Lions in new levels of success. In Good’s fifth season, the Lions advanced to the semifinals of the WCC Championships thanks to three straight wins in three days. The Lions join Saint Mary’s and Gonzaga as the only program to advance to the quarterfinals and beyond in each of the last four seasons. The run in the 2013 WCC Championships was at the heels of Good’s fourth season where LMU finished the 2011-12 season at 21-13 overall and 11-5 (4th) in the WCC. Many of the Lions’ marks in LMU’s Centennial Season go back to the 1989-90 Elite Team, including its first 20-win season, the most conference wins, first postseason win, first team to earn consecutive postseason wins, most home wins (12), and best road record (9-4). In addition, the Lions have found success in the big games under Head Coach Good. The Lions are 4-5 against ranked opponents the last three seasons under Good, including a 3-2 mark in 2011-12. The three wins in one season against ranked opponents is second only to the 1989-90 team in program history. Good has led the Lions to a pair of wins (#9 Gonzaga, #23 Saint Louis) over ranked teams at home, the first coach to do so since Coach Donovan in 1961. The success in the 2011-12 season earned Good the WCC Coach of the Year, the Lions first since 1995-96. After the first two games of 201314, Good is 66-98 and has a career head coaching record of 308-321. Good is no stranger to running a program. The 2013-14 season will be Good’s 22nd as a head coach at the NCAA level, coaching eight seasons at Bryant College (2001-08) prior to joining LMU. He also coached at UNLV for one season (2000-01) and eight seasons at Eastern Kentucky University (1981-89). In addition, his impact hasn’t been just at the college level as he was the head coach at the New England prep school Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, Maine, for 10 seasons (1990-00). At MCI he compiled an impressive 275-30 (.902) record that included five New England Prep School Athletic Conference Championships. Good coached 28 of the Lions’ 31 games in the 2008-09 season, filling in for former Head Coach Bill Bayno, who served a leave of absence before resigning due to health issues. In Good’s second season the team posted its second best turn-around in school history with 15 more wins than the year prior (which was also the second-best turn-around in the nation in 2009-10), defeated their first ranked opponent (#9 Gonzaga) since 1990, posted the program’s first rankedwin at Gersten Pavilion, defeated a top-10 team for the second time in school history (the last being in 1960), and had three players earn postseason All-WCC honors, just the 10th time since 1956 three or more Lions have claimed WCC honors. Prior to joining the Lions as an assistant, Good led Bryant University (Smithfield, RI) to new levels of success, posting a record of 132-86 in eight seasons. Good was named head coach in 2001 and inherited a program that had four straight losing seasons. The 2003-04 season saw Good lead the Bulldogs to a new level. They set a school-record

with 23 wins, earning the school’s first NCAA tournament berth in 24 years. They not only qualified, but advanced to the Sweet Sixteen. After a tough loss in the regional finals in just his third season, year four may go down as one of the best in Bryant’s history, leading them to a 25-9 overall record and a trip to the NCAA Division II Championship, falling to Virginia Union in the title game, 63-58. His extensive coaching background includes five seasons as the assistant coach at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond (1976-81). He then was named the head coach and spent eight seasons at Eastern Kentucky from 1981-89. He compiled an overall record of 96-129 (.427) at EKU. He enjoyed his best season in 1986-87 with a 19-11 record as he was named the Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year. The next season his squad was 18-11. Before arriving at Eastern Kentucky, he spent six seasons at Richmond Madison High School in Richmond, Ky. He served three seasons (1970-73) as the JV head coach and three seasons (1973-76) as the head coach. Good graduated from EKU in 1969 and received a master’s degree from his alma mater in 1970. He was introduced into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in Kingston, RI, for his time as coach at MCI in 2004 and was named the 2005 Words Unlimited Coach of the Year and Rhode Island Basketball Media Coach of the Year in 2008.
