Bay Area Rivalry Up Next in WCC Play

Like the rest of the 10-team West Coast Conference, the first week of play is a grueling one, with most teams playing four games in eight days. The Lions will play game three of that stretch when they travel to San Francisco to face the Dons on Thursday, Jan. 2 at 7 pm. The series between the two has been a thrilling one of late, with the last 11 meetings being decided by an average of just 1.9 ppg. The game can be seen on TheW.tv and heard on KXLU 88.9 FM. INSIDE THE LIONS • LMU began the 2013-14 West Coast Conference portion of their schedule with a home sweep, knocking off BYU 87-76 and then grinding out a 65-62 thriller over San Diego. The Lions improve to 10-4 on the season and 2-0 in WCC play. It is the Lions’ best start through 14 games since 1995-96 season when they began 11-4. The Lions improved to 5-0 at home, equalling the best start at home since winning the first five in 2006-07. The last time the Lions won their first two games of conference play was in 2005-06, when they started 3-0. FRESHMAN MARKS: • Freshman Evan Payne led the Lions with 27 points against BYU, posting his second straight career-high (24 points against La Sierra). Saturday’s point total is tied for the fourth best point total by a freshman in LMU History. It is also the most ever by an LMU freshman in his first WCC game and the third-most by an LMU player in his conference debut. He added a teamhigh 16 in the win over San Diego and has scored 21.25 ppg in his last four outings.
