• Injuries: Senior Godwin Okonji was involved in a car accident while riding to practice with teammate Ayodeji Egbeyemi on Oct. 30 (See LMULions.com for more information) and he will likely apply for a medical redshirt at the end of the season and will not play. Egbeyemi has missed the last four games since suffering a hip injury in the game against UC Riverside (Dec. 2) and will undergo surgery, likely missing the rest of the season. Prior to that same game, freshman Nino Jackson suffered an ankle injury and is out indefinitely. Freshman Gabe Levin, who has second in double figures in his first 10 games - all starts - suffered a shoulder injury against Valparaiso and is day-to-day heading into WCC play. LOS ANGELES - Mar. 2, 2013 - LMU men’s basketball jumped out to a quick start on BYU, posted a spirited rally late despite foul trouble to an already thin roster, but it wasn’t enough on Senior Day as the Cougars held on for a 73-70 win. It was fitting that the WCC’s top-two scorers in BYU’s Tyler Haws and LMU’s Anthony Ireland would finish the game with 24 points each as BYU used the free throw line to fight off the Lions fierce rally late. Ireland added five assists in 38 minutes while Haws went 14-for-14 from the free throw line, including six in the final minute. Senior Ashley Hamilton added 18 points and six rebounds for the Lions (822, 1-15), while Matt Carlino and Brandon Davies added 11 each for the Cougars (21-10, 10-6). The Lions jumped out to a 16-10 lead on Hamilton’s three-pointer six minutes into the game. The Lions hit their first five shots of the game riding the emotion of Senior Day. However, the Lions quick start wouldn’t last as quick foul trouble restricted the Lions already thin bench. Three players for the Lions fouled out and the Cougars hit 25-for-34 free throws. LMU was 13-for-19 from the charity stripe. LMU finished hitting 24 field goals to BYU’s 21 as the Lions hit 38.7 percent from the field, including nine three poitners. BYU was 45.7 percent and hit 6-for-16 three-pointers, all coming at key moments.
NOTES THROUGHOUT THE SEASON: • Offense came from their defense in the win over Cal Poly, scoring a season-high 23 points off 15 Mustang turnovers... The Lions held Cal Poly to 59 points, the lowest by an opponent all season for the Lions... The Lions have had more turnovers than their opponents just once in 12 games this season and are averaging 12.92 turnovers per game this season. The Lions have averaged under 13 turnovers a game just twice in program history. They averaged just 12.97 in 2009-10 and set the record in 1983-84 at 11.98 per game... The Lions were called for a season-low nine fouls against the Mustangs. They entered the game averaging 23.1 per game on the season. • The Lions had a season-high 20 offensive rebounds good for 23 second chance points in the win over UC Riverside. They equalled that total with 20 against La Sierra, going for a seasonhigh 25 second chance points. The Lions have had double-digit offensive rebounds in all 12 games to start the season and lead the West Coast Conference with 15.0 per game after grabbing 19 at Valparaiso and 16 against Pittsburgh. The Lions grabbed 17 offensive rebounds to cut a 23-point deficit to five against NIU, and against Long Beach State the Lions had 19 offensive boards and held a 45-30 edge on the glass. They used five of their 19 offensive rebounds in the final minute to get the win at LBSU. • Senior Alex Osborne had a career-game against La Sierra, becoming the first Lion since Dec. 28, 2009 to have a game with at least 15 points and 15 rebounds. He had 20 points and 17 rebounds, grabbing eight offensive rebounds in going 8-for-10 from the field. He added two assists, two steals and a block. His eight offensive rebounds is the most since Kevin Young had eight in going for 16 points and 19 rebounds against New Mexico State in the last 15-15 game. • The Lions had three 20-point scorers in the win over South Dakota St., the first time that has happened since the record-setting LMU-USIU game on Jan. 5, 1991. They did it again against La Sierra. Against SDSU, Ben Dickinson had 22 points while Anthony Ireland and Gabe Levin had 20 points each. Against the Golden Eagles to end non-conference, Evan Payne had 24, Ireland had 21 and Osborne 20. Prior to this season, the last time it happened, the Lions set the NCAA record for points in a 186-140 win. Five Lions went for more than 20 points (Terrell Lowery - 34, Richard Petruska - 28, Chris Knight - 27, Rahim Harris - 24, Ross Richardson - 24). Against Northern Arizona, the Lions had a pair of players with double-doubles. Anthony Ireland had 18 points and 10 assists for his sixth career double-double while freshman Gabe Levin had his first with 15 points and 10 rebounds. • A GRAND FINALE: Senior Anthony Ireland enters his final season all over the record books at LMU with the projection to do even more. He enters the season as a Preseason All-WCC selection and is: • 2014 Senior CLASS Award Candidate • Watch-list for the Bob Cousy Award • Preseason Lou Henson Award All-American • WCC Best Player Selection (sbnation and College Hoops Journal) • One of nation’s most unknown top players (CBS) • First-team All-WCC preseason by various publications (Lindy’s, Sporting News) Ireland has not missed a game in his three-year career, playing in all 112 of the games LMU has played the last three-plus years. He earned his 100th start against Vanderbilt and has LMU Men’s Basketball • 2013-14 Game Notes • www.LMULions.com • #LMULions

now started 105 in his career, second all-time in LMU history. He has done this while losing a tooth during a game, not missing a second in the process against Alaska-Anchorage; playing the season needing knee surgery as a junior; needing stitches in his lower lip during a game as a sophomore. He is at it again in 2013-14. As of Dec. 26, Ireland is second in the West Coast Conference in scoring (19.2 ppg), fourth in assists (5.3 apg), 8th in free throw percentage (86.3%), fifth in steals (1.6 spg), and third in minutes played (34.2 mpg). As the Lions’ lone scoring threat in 2012-13, he was the target of opposing defenses who played aggressive against him, sending him to the line 203 times, ranked 12th all-time in LMU history. Entering the game against BYU, Ireland ranks sixth with 403 free throws made. Hank Gathers is fifth with 416. Mike Yoest is the all-time leader with 561 made free throws. Ireland was named LMU’s first NABC All-District selection as a sophomore and was a Lou Henson Preseason All-American and honorable mention Jesuit All-American in 2011-12. He was named preseason All-American again this preseason. Entering Dec. 28, Ireland has played 2,926 of a possible 3,235 minutes (90.6 percent) since his sophomore season. He led the Lions in scoring in 30 of 34 games last season and has done it in 9 of the 12 games this season. • The Lions needed all 11 of their scholarship players in uniform against South Dakota State as they were called for 37 fouls, equalling the program record set on Feb. 9, 2001 against Nevada. South Dakota State finished 37-for-50 (74.0 percent) from the free throw line. The 37 made free throws equals an opponent’s record against the Lions as Santa Clara hit 37 on Feb. 24, 2011. No Lion actually fouled out of the game as six Lions had four fouls. Against Northern Iowa, the Lions were called for 28 fouls, resulting in a 28-for-39 outing (71.8 percent) from the line for the Panthers. • While the Lions feature 11 total underclassmen on their 17-man roster, they have plenty of experience. Seniors Anthony Ireland, Ayodeji Egbeyemi, Alex Osborne and Godwin Okonji entered the 2013-14 season having played a combined 372 games in an LMU uniform. After 12 games in 2013-14, Ireland has played all 112 games LMU has played in during his career, playing nearly 91 percent of the available minutes the last two-plus years. Egbeyemi has played in 91 games, while Osborne has 105 (Okonji, who was injured in the car accident on Oct. 30 - See LMULions.com for more information, remains out indefinitely).

• The Lions finished the two games at the San Diego Classic shooting 52.1 percent, including 57.6 percent in the win on Saturday. It was the Lions’ best shooting night from the field against an NCAA Division I opponent since hitting 59.3 percent against Seattle on Dec. 30, 2009. The Lions hit 57.7 percent against Pacifica in the opener last season. After shooting 37.7 percent against LBSU, the Lions hit 55.4 percent against Northern Arizona, including 65.6 percent in the second half. • Max Good, who is in his sixth season in 2013-14, enters the season fifth all-time in program history in wins (72 - as of 12/21/13), sixth in conference wins (23) and second in WCC tournament wins (6). Good COACHING WINS: led the Lions to a 21-13 mark and its second postseason 1. William J. Donovan (1953-61) 107 appearance in three years in 2011-12, LMU’s Centennial 2. Paul Westhead (1985-90) 105 year. That season set standards going back to the Lions’ 3. John Arndt (1961-68) 91 Elite Eight team of 1989-90, including its first 20-win 4. Max Good (2008-pres.) 72 (12), and the best road record (9-4), defeating a pair of ranked teams away from home (UCLA, Saint Mary’s). The 21 wins was the fourth most in school history and the 11 WCC wins is tied with the 1967-68 team for the third most. The Lions won a pair of games in the postseason, the first postseason wins since that Elite Eight team. Good was named WCC Coach of the Year following the Lions’ success that season. • In 2012-13, LMU men’s basketball earned three straight wins at the WCC Championships to advance to the semifinals for the second time in four years. BYU excluded, only LMU, Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s have gone to the quarterfinals and beyond in each of the last four WCC tournaments. • The 2012-13 season saw men’s basketball claim the most WCC All-Academic Selections (Ashley Hamilton, Ayodeji Egbeyemi, Taylor Walker) in program history. During Coach Good’s tenure, the Lions have graduated all 17 seniors who have completed their eligibility. Fifth-year senior Alex Osborne is the fourth Lion during Good’s tenure to be working on his master’s degree while still playing (Hamilton, Teel, Diederichs). He graduated with his Bachelor’s in Economics

in May of 2013 and is currently in the Master’s of Education Studies program. INTERNATIONAL CONNECTION The Lions’ roster in 2013-14 will have a strong international flavor that includes Nigeria natives Godwin Okonji and Ayodeji Egbeyemi, Marin Mornar from Croatia and newcomer Patson Siame, who is from Luanshya, Zambia. A big reason behind the Lions’ international push has been Associate Head Coach Myke Scholl. Scholl, who holds a law degree from Maryland, has worked with basketball programs in the U.S. Virgin Islands, at the junior college level in northern California, with the South Africa National and Under-20 teams, the Senegal Men’s National Team, with a professional team in South Africa and as a scout for the Detroit Pistons. Eight years prior to LMU, Scholl was the Director of Sports and International Programs for Miles and Associates International in Johannesburg, South Africa. He managed the creation and implementation of the largest HIV and AIDS prevention campaigns in the world called “Love Life,” funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Kaiser Foundation. He was also active in the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders program, and he established the first national high school basketball league in South Africa with 1,800 boys and 1,800 girls teams that included more than 42,000 participants. He also supervised the construction and development of 500 basketball courts throughout Africa, developed a high school basketball league and motivational program in South Africa, Zambia, Uganda and Kenya. NEWEST LIONS LMU men’s basketball signed three high school standouts during the early signing period in November, receiving signed National Letters of Intent from Devin Wyatt, a 6-7 forward of De Soto High School in De Soto, Tex., Compton point guard Kyron Cartwright and Westchester guard Elijah Stewart. All will join LMU in the fall of 2014. Wyatt helped anchor a power-house program in De Soto High School, helping the team all the way to the Class 5A Region quarterfinals. He was named first-team All-District as a junior. Cartwright, a 5-11 point guard, led Compton to a 20-11 record overall and a 9-3 mark in league play as a junior. He averaged 12 points and seven assists last year, earning First-Team All-Moore League honors and Daily Breeze All-Area honors. Stewart, a 6-5 combo guard/forward, helped the Comets go 29-7 record on the season and a 65-57 win over El Camino Real in the city championship. In the title game, he hit a pair of three-pointers and had 10 points. In the quarterfinals, he led the very balanced Comets with 16 points in the 74-41 win over Taft. The Comets advanced to the Open Division Regional Semifinals and Stewart went on to earn second-team All-Western League.
LONS IN OT LMU is 37-45 in overtime games thanks to a 2-1 mark in 2012-13, getting the second win in the second round win over USF. They went 4-0 in overtime in 2011-12, the first time in program history the Lions won four overtime games in a single season. The Lions are 9-3 in overtime games under Head Coach Max Good, defeating Idaho State twice, San Francisco and Weber State in 2011-12. The first overtime game in LMU history came in the 1926-27 season against California Christian College, a 16-14 win for the Lions. The longest game in LMU history was a five-overtime affair against Fresno State in 1957. The Lions lost 92-90. AGAINST THE RANKED For the first time since 1989, the Lions faced the nation’s top-ranked team when they faced Gonzaga in the WCC semifinals. Fittingly, the last time the Lions had to face a No. 1 was actually in Las Vegas. In the historic 1989-90 season, LMU would open with preseason No. 1 UNLV on Nov. 15, 1989, falling 102-91. LMU has played a No. 1 (AP only) six times, five of them coming against conference foe San Francisco. Jan. 1955 at USF L, 68-46 Feb. 1955 vs. USF L, 65-48 Feb. 11, 1978 vs. USF L, 82-80 Feb. 17, 1978 at USF L, 99-71 Nov. 15, 1989 at UNLV L, 102-91 Mar. 9, 2013 vs. Gon L, 66-48 (at Las Vegas) The Lions are 4-7 in their last 10 games against ranked opponents, falling to ranked Gonzaga three times in 2012-13. The Lions went 3-2 in 2011-12 against ranked opponents, earning a win at #16 Saint Mary’s on Feb. 15. The five ranked opponents was the most since the 2008-09 season when they played five.

L
MU Head Coach Max Good, who officially took over the program as the 25th coach in school history on Jan. 12, 2009, continues to put the Lions in new levels of success. In Good’s fifth season, the Lions advanced to the semifinals of the WCC Championships thanks to three straight wins in three days. The Lions join Saint Mary’s and Gonzaga as the only program to advance to the quarterfinals and beyond in each of the last four seasons. The run in the 2013 WCC Championships was at the heels of Good’s fourth season where LMU finished the 2011-12 season at 21-13 overall and 11-5 (4th) in the WCC. Many of the Lions’ marks in LMU’s Centennial Season go back to the 1989-90 Elite Team, including its first 20-win season, the most conference wins, first postseason win, first team to earn consecutive postseason wins, most home wins (12), and best road record (9-4). In addition, the Lions have found success in the big games under Head Coach Good. The Lions are 4-5 against ranked opponents the last three seasons under Good, including a 3-2 mark in 2011-12. The three wins in one season against ranked opponents is second only to the 1989-90 team in program history. Good has led the Lions to a pair of wins (#9 Gonzaga, #23 Saint Louis) over ranked teams at home, the first coach to do so since Coach Donovan in 1961. The success in the 2011-12 season earned Good the WCC Coach of the Year, the Lions first since 1995-96. After the first 12 games of 2013-14, Good is 72-102 and has a career head coaching record of 314-325. Good is no stranger to running a program. The 2013-14 season will be Good’s 22nd as a head coach at the NCAA level, coaching eight seasons at Bryant College (2001-08) prior to joining LMU. He also coached at UNLV for one season (2000-01) and eight seasons at Eastern Kentucky University (1981-89). In addition, his impact hasn’t been just at the college level as he was the head coach at the New England prep school Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, Maine, for 10 seasons (1990-00). At MCI he compiled an impressive 275-30 (.902) record that included five New England Prep School Athletic Conference Championships. Good coached 28 of the Lions’ 31 games in the 2008-09 season, filling in for former Head Coach Bill Bayno, who served a leave of absence before resigning due to health issues. In Good’s second season the team posted its second best turn-around in school history with 15 more wins than the year prior (which was also the second-best turn-around in the nation in 2009-10), defeated their first ranked opponent (#9 Gonzaga) since 1990, posted the program’s first rankedwin at Gersten Pavilion, defeated a top-10 team for the second time in school history (the last being in 1960), and had three players earn postseason All-WCC honors, just the 10th time since 1956 three or more Lions have claimed WCC honors. Prior to joining the Lions as an assistant, Good led Bryant University (Smithfield, RI) to new levels of success, posting a record of 132-86 in eight seasons. Good was named head coach in 2001 and inherited a program that had four straight losing seasons. The 2003-04 season

saw Good lead the Bulldogs to a new level. They set a school-record with 23 wins, earning the school’s first NCAA tournament berth in 24 years. They not only qualified, but advanced to the Sweet Sixteen. After a tough loss in the regional finals in just his third season, year four may go down as one of the best in Bryant’s history, leading them to a 25-9 overall record and a trip to the NCAA Division II Championship, falling to Virginia Union in the title game, 63-58. His extensive coaching background includes five seasons as the assistant coach at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond (1976-81). He then was named the head coach and spent eight seasons at Eastern Kentucky from 1981-89. He compiled an overall record of 96-129 (.427) at EKU. He enjoyed his best season in 1986-87 with a 19-11 record as he was named the Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year. The next season his squad was 18-11. Before arriving at Eastern Kentucky, he spent six seasons at Richmond Madison High School in Richmond, Ky. He served three seasons (1970-73) as the JV head coach and three seasons (1973-76) as the head coach. Good graduated from EKU in 1969 and received a master’s degree from his alma mater in 1970. He was introduced into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in Kingston, RI, for his time as coach at MCI in 2004 and was named the 2005 Words Unlimited Coach of the Year and Rhode Island Basketball Media Coach of the Year in 2008.
