INSIDE THE LIONS • The Lions will conclude their stretch of seven out of nine games on the road when they travel to Pepperdine for the first of the Wells Fargo PCH Cup battles on Saturday, Feb. 1. The Lions snapped a six-game skid with a 92-81 win over Pacific in Stockton on Jan. 23 and then fell at Saint Mary’s, 89-61. The Lions picked up their first road win of conference on a night when the other three home teams in the WCC earned the victory, all by a slim margin of just four points. In the win, the Lions had a season-best 60-point second half, had its best scoring total in conference play since 2006 (at San Diego, 2/6/06 - W, 94-76), hit a season-best seven three-pointers on 14 attempts, the fifth fewest in 21 games. They hit a season-best 31-for-37 from the free throw line (83.8 percent), turned the ball over a season-low six times, had a pair of 20-point scorers (Payne 25; Ireland 24) for the third time on the season and had a pair of players claim five blocks (Levin, Mornar) on their way to a total of 11 blocks, equaling the most (11 vs. Sacramento St., 12/7/10) since the program-record of 13 in 1998 (vs. CS Fullerton, 12/2/98). • Senior Anthony Ireland continues to pace the Lions IRELAND CLIMBING UP: in all areas of the floor, putting the final marks on his Career Points: record-setting career. He has not missed a game in his 1. 2490 Hank Gathers (89 games) - 1987-90 career, playing in his school record 122nd against Saint 2. 2201 Terrell Lowery (119) - 1988-92 3. 2060 Forrest McKenzie (110) - 1981-86 Mary’s while earning his 115th start, also a record. He 4. 2010 Bo Kimble (76 games) - 1987-90 had his 39th 20-point game with his 24 against Pacific, 5. 1985 Anthony Ireland (109g) - 2010-13 adding his third 30-point game with 34 points against 6. 1980 Keith Smith (110 g) - 1982-86 Santa Clara on Jan. 4. As of Jan. 31 he is second in the league at 18.6 ppg (62nd nationally), second in assists at Career Assists: 689 Terrell Lowery - 1988-92 5.6 (29th nationally) and second in steals at 1.86 (71st). 1. 2. 594 Keith Smith - 1982-86 With 409 points (ranked 31th in the NCAA as of Jan. 31), 3. 508 Anthony Ireland - 2010-13 124 assists (ranked 20th) and 41 steals (ranked 52nd) in 4. 506 Jim Williamson - 1993-97 2013-14, Ireland surpasses Kieth Smith for 5th all-time in LMU history with 1,985 points. He also moved past Career Steals: Jim Williamson for third with 508 career assists and is 1. 231 Terrell Lowery - 1988-92 2. 189 Mike Yoest - 1984-88 third all-time with 188 career steals. He joins Terrell 3. 188 Anthony Ireland - 2010-13 Lowery as the only player in LMU history with at least 1,500 points, 500 assists and 150 steals in his career. There are only three active players in the NCAA that have those numbers (Kendall Williams New Mexico; Chaz Williams - UMass; Shabazz Napier - UConn). None of them, including Lowery, have 500 career rebounds. Ireland is at 486 heading into Saturday against the Waves. • The Lions enter the week second behind Pacific in the WCC and 8th in the NCAA (as of Jan. 31) hitting 76.2 percent on the season from the free throw line. They raised their season number by nearly a percent after the season-high 31-for-37 effort against Pacific (the most since going 32for-40 against CS Fullerton in the CIT on Mar. 14, 2012). Free throws played a key role in seven of the last nine games as Santa Clara went 24-for-27 (88.9 percent), hitting 22 of 23 in the second half and overtime. San Diego hit 20 of 22 free throws in the second half to overcome a halftime deficit and finished 23-for-29 (79.3%) for the game. And in the final game of the road swing, BYU went 30-for-38 (78.9%), hitting 19-for-25 in the second half. In the first four games away from Gersten, opponents went 94-for-122 (77.0%) from the charity stripe, while LMU was 54-for-74 LMU Men’s Basketball • 2013-14 Game Notes • www.LMULions.com • #LMULions
