INSIDE THE LIONS • After falling to Portland on Thursday, 71-64, the Lions (11-15, 3-11) conclude the Pacific Northwest trip at the hardest places to play in the West Coast Conference the last 25 years. The Lions last won in Spokane in 1992 (23 games) and will face a Bulldog team (22-4, 14-0) who is unbeaten at the McCarthey Center in 14 tries in 2013-14, on senior day. Gonzaga has lost just two conference games (Saint Mary’s 2011, Santa Clara 2007) since the McCarthey Athletic Center opened in the 2004-05 season. The Lions aren’t alone in finding Spokane a hard place to get victories. Conference newcomers BYU and Pacific are 0-3 in Spokane, while Pepperdine has lost 26 straight overall and has not won in Spokane since 1998. Portland last won in 2003, San Diego in 2000 and the longest drought belongs to San Francisco, who last won in 1989. • Senior Anthony Ireland continues to pace the Lions IRELAND CLIMBING UP: in all areas of the floor, putting the final marks on his Career Points: record-setting career, putting himself in even more elite 1. 2490 Hank Gathers (89 games) - 1987-90 company in the LMU record book. He has not missed a 2. 2201 Terrell Lowery (119) - 1988-92 game in his career, playing in his school record 126th 3. 2060 Forrest McKenzie (110) - 1981-86 2054 Anthony Ireland (123g) - 2010-13 against Portland while earning his 119th start, also a re- 4. 5. 2010 Bo Kimble (76 games) - 1987-90 cord. With his 15 points, five rebounds and six assists on Thursday, Ireland became the only Lion in LMU history Career Assists: with at least 2,000 career points, 500 career rebounds, 1. 689 Terrell Lowery - 1988-92 500 career assists and 150 career steals. He is the only 2. 594 Keith Smith - 1982-86 active player in the NCAA to have hit those milestones 3. 526 Anthony Ireland - 2010-13 4. 506 Jim Williamson - 1993-97 and there are only three active players in Division I basketball (Kendall Williams - New Mexico; Chaz Williams Career Steals: - UMass; Shabazz Napier - UConn) to have 1,500 points, 1. 231 Terrell Lowery - 1988-92 500 assists and 150 steals. As of Feb. 13 he is second 2. 190 Anthony Ireland - 2010-13 in the league at 18.4 ppg (75th nationally), second in 3. 189 Mike Yoest - 1984-88 See page 4 for the entire list of his career records assists at 5.46 (37th nationally) and second in steals at 1.65. With 478 points (ranked 34th in the NCAA as of Feb. 9), 142 assists (ranked 24th) and 43 steals (ranked 72nd) in 2013-14, Ireland now ranks fourth in points with 2,054 (needing just six to tie Forrest McKenzie for third), third in assists with 526 and second in steals at 190. • While Ireland has been a mainstay in the Lions’ line-up the last four seasons, playing shorthanded is nothing new for the Lions in the six seasons under Head Coach Max Good. Freshman Nino Jackson, who has been out after a severe ankle sprain prior to the game against UC Riverside on Dec. 2, has withdrawn from the University and is no longer with the program due to personal reasons. Sophomore transfer Ben Dickinson missed the game on Jan. 18 against Gonzaga and also remains out indefinitely for personal reasons. Junior Chase Flint, who had played in 42 games as a Lion with 24 starts, suffered a broken elbow against Portland on Jan. 16 and will be out the rest of the season. He is the third former starter to be lost for the season in 2013-14 due to injury. Combined with freshman Patson Siame’s year of residency, the Lions will play this weekend with just seven scholarship players. Entering the Gonzaga game, key players have missed 53 games this season due to injury, including Flint’s seven games, Godwin Okonji (leg suffered in car accident prior to practice on Oct. 20, see LMULions.com for more) for the entire season (26 games) and senior Ayodeji Egbeyemi (hip) the last 18 games.
