SUMMER

SKINCARE SAVIORS How to avoid and treat summer flare-ups! by Andrea Gregaydis

Summertime‌just the thought of the season puts you in a feel-good mood. The days are longer, the warmth of the sun is electric, vacations and pool parties are never-ending! We wait all year for summer to come around again, especially those of us that may have cold winters. But with all the positives of summer, we have to be extra cautious of skin conditions or flare-ups of skin conditions that the warm weather can bring. Not to mention, those related to excessive sun exposure!

Now, don’t get me wrong, the sun has some great qualities, in small doses. It helps with vitamin D production, in “moderation” with some skin issues, depression caused by Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), and boosts our overall mood. However, the key to reaping the benefits is moderation! I don’t know about you, but moderation isn’t a word that most people follow. After all, if a little is good, then more must be better right? Wrong! Estheticians have long dealt with this when it comes to treatments and product ingredients. We often have to act as moderators for our clients! While we want to protect our clients skin year round, each season has its own conditions to deal with. Now it’s our job to educate them on the dangers of too much fun in the sun!

Sunburn Some common skin issues that may flare up during the summer, range from acne to rosacea. Some even see eczema worsen with too much sun exposure. Don’t even get me started on sunburns, that is an esthetician’s worst nightmare, especially when clients still want treatments done. Some medications can be extremely photosensitizing and can cause extreme sunburn, rashes, and even blisters if they are exposed to too much sun, especially without SPF. About 90% of aging comes from UV exposure. Yikes! Most often the biggest issue estheticians see in the summer is sunburn. Even as professionals its hard to escape the heat. Think about it, you are outside for the first time in a while, cooking out, gardening, enjoying the pool, and you lose track of time! Before you know it, you bypassed the two hour SPF reapplication, and well hello tomato! No matter how much we preach about the importance of SPF, we still see those sunburns. Well how do sunburns happen? UVB rays, also known as “burning rays”, are the shorter of the UV rays, therefore affecting the epidermis and causing a burn. Not just wearing, but 12

July2020

LNEonline.com

also reapplying SPF every two hours is essential to protect against the harmful rays caused by both UVA and UVB. Some helpful post sunburn recommendations for your clients include aloe vera, cold from the fridge or better yet straight from an aloe plant! Aloe is an anti-inflammatory that helps to inhibit the growth of bacteria and promotes circulation. Make sure that if your clients use aloe from the store that it is 100% aloe with no additional colors or perfumes, which could further aggravate the sunburn. For an added benefit, tell your clients to keep their aloe in the fridge to help with the pain and itch that can accompany sunburns. Some studies have shown the powerful effects of using vitamins A & E together, which can overall protect the skin from sunburn by preventing inflammation in the skin. Both of these vitamins are powerful antioxidants, which can help to counteract some free radical damage created by UV exposure. Offer

your clients some topical creams that include both. If all else fails and your client still needs your help, grab your LED light! With both anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties, you could help minimize the long term negative effects of the burn and create some immediate reduction in inflammation.

Rosacea Rosacea is another skin condition that is hugely irritated by extreme heat and excess sun exposure. Rosacea is chronic and inflammatory, with symptoms that range from flushed skin and inflamed blood vessels to papules and pustules. While there is no cure for rosacea, there are some known triggers that can cause the skin to flare-up. One of the most common is prolonged sun exposure. Limiting the amount of sun exposure, especially between 10 am and 4 pm, is crucial. Recommend that your clients wear and reapply SPF, rock a hat, or lie under an umbrella if they

skin Summer Skincare Saviors are out during peak hours. A mineral sunscreen, one of which contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, could be a great option for rosacea or sensitive skin to help prevent further irritation. Circling back to aloe for rosacea as well, using a totally pure form can help with inflammation as long as the skin tolerates it well. Be cautious of any prescription medication used for rosacea that can also very much increase the chance of sunburn. Cool compresses on the face for some instant sunburn relief may help as well.

Eczema Let's talk about eczema! It is a form of atopic dermatitis, in which an overproduction of skin cells results in dry patches, which become thick, inflamed and irritated. Now we know with eczema that some UV exposure is often used as treatment. However, very minimal exposure is recommended. With eczema skin already irritated and compromised, adding a sunburn to it is a recipe for disaster. Some people with rosacea can be prescribed steroid medication, which can increase photosensitivity and cause a very painful sunburn. With certain

medications and skin conditions, it does not take very long at all for the skin to become burned, in some cases even blistered. Stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the days, cover the areas of eczema if possible, and slather on that mineral sunscreen. Cool aloe from the fridge, a nice cold shower, and a heavy moisturizer afterward can help with the healing process of the skin.

mer. No-one is saying to not enjoy it. However, the important part is to do so safely. Share the following tips with your clients to help them avoid any painful summer skincare problems.

Acne

• Follow a thorough skincare routine and wash your face after a long day outside, especially after a full day of reapplying SPF.

Acne flare-ups can sometimes “clearup” with sun exposure by drying some excessive oil on the skin. However, this is a short-term gain as the long-term effects can make acne worse. If dry flaky skin occurs after a sunburn, this can cause a buildup of more dead skin cells which are capable of clogging pores, causing more breakouts. Sun triggers inflammation in the skin, which could increase the chances of unwanted pigmentation after acne lesions have healed. Being in the sun and heat also produces sweat, causing bacteria to thrive which can lead to more acne. So the long term negative outcomes of sun exposure and acne certainly outweigh the short-term. We all love the sun and sum-

• Check your medications to see if photosensitivity is a possible side effect. This could very much help with a potential sunburn.

• Up your antioxidants to help combat the potential of free radical damage. • Check with your dermatologist regularly for any changes in moles. • Keep skin-healing and soothing cream or gels on hand such as aloe vera, calamine lotions or hydrocortisone creams. • Wear protective clothing and hats to avoid direct exposure, and take some time out of the sun to sit in the shade. Little changes to your summer routine can go a long way in preventing unnecessary damage or discomfort. With very minimum effort you can have a longlasting impact. Above all else, have fun and enjoy your summer!

Update Your Spa Menu Summer is the time for relaxation and exotic getaways. It’s no surprise that many choose to melt away their stresses at the spa, so you’ll need to update your spa menu with offerings that scream summer is here! From HydraFacials to Oxygen Facials, your clients will be looking for anything that promises dewy, radiant skin. While these treatments are generally available year-round, they are most beneficial in the summer. It will be your job to educate your clients on the extra TLC needed to combat the dry effects of salt water and dangerous effects of the sun. Rather than chemical peels, microdermabrasion can exfoliate and reveal luminous skin without making it more prone to sunburn. Dermaplaning is another good option with the bonus of removing peach fuzz for client’s who want hairless and smooth skin. Slimming wraps are the perfect way to become bikini body-ready by encouraging the release of toxins and excess fluids. Treatments that reduce cellulite and sculpt the body can give your clients that extra confidence they need to strut their stuff. Body waxing can help complement sunless tan skin, or laser hair removal can be an excellent investment for future summers to come! Many of these treatments will sell for themselves, but with the right marketing tactics, you can be sure to attract repeat customers all summer long. Create packages with

Dr. Jeff Collagen Treatment with Freeze-Dried Collagen Mask

the most popular seasonal treatments to generate a lot of hype. Or pair a popular treatment with one that might not be as popular to drive sales to all of your services. Offer a summer punch card as an incentive for your clients to keep coming back until they can claim their reward. Showcase your services on social media and utilize influencers to get more clients through the doors.

Beat the heat with refreshing treatments that bring the skin back to its natural moisturizing levels. Invite your guests to a Calming Cucumber Facial or Hydrating Watermelon Facial to cool off in between summer activities. Better yet, a Cyrofacial to boost collagen production for a youthful appearance. For those clients looking for gorgeous, glowing skin, offer them a Body Polish to scrub away toxins and dead cells while increasing circulation. Use a peppermint aromatherapy scrub to cool the skin and invigorate the muscles. Treat the feet to a soothing minty foot massage and soak them in a bowl of room temperature water with marbles and fresh flowers to further stimulate the senses. Offer a rejuvenating Aloe Vera Body Treatment to cool and heal the skin from the sunburn. If you usually offer hot stone massage therapy, then switch it up and provide cold stone therapy instead! Not only will

this help your clients feel more comfortable during a hot day, but a cold stone massage can promote healing and reduce pain and swelling in the muscles and tissues.

and can be infused with water to keep things fresh right before a treatment! Add in some strawberries for a spa water recipe that is even more fruity and fresh.

Hand your clients a chilled face towel to cool down before their treatments. All you need is clean towels and some essential oils to make them feel ahhmazing. You can keep a bunch in the refrigerator for quick access.

• Blackberries are the essence of the season. They contain an antioxidant called anthocyanin that helps protect the skin against fine lines and dryness by deactivating free radicals. Cure your clients’ sweet tooths and offer sweet berry scones or give them a taste of relaxation with a berry delicious cocktail!

In-Season Indulgences Treat your guests’ palates with delicious foods and drinks for healthy summer skin that make your clients feel good from the inside out. Lemonade and Iced Tea are two of summer’s quintessential beverages! But these fresh, cleansing foods can support the body’s detoxification systems and organs, helping them work more effectively to remove toxins from the body. Not only are they full of antioxidants and rich in nutrients, but they are cool, hydrating, and light; perfect for coping with the summer heat. You can also keep the theme going by incorporating products into your treatments that contain these delectable ingredients. Clients will be drawn to summer-inspired treatments just as much as they’ll be craving these treats!

• Watermelon is also loaded with vitamin C, and an antioxidant called lycopene, which reduces free radicals causing damage to the skin. It contains vitamin A which encourages the growth of collagen and elastin cells to keep the skin young and supple. You can’t go wrong with a refreshing watermelon sorbet or a bright, flavorful popsicle!

• Coconut water is a must for its hydrating powers! It contains natural electrolytes and high levels of potassium, great for skin growth. It acts as an anti-inflammatory, detoxifier, and anti-microbial, which can be beneficial for acne-prone skin.

Summer Goodies Galore New season, new skincare! Update your retail shelf with products that keep your clients' skin calm, cool, and collected. These include refreshing facial mists, broad-spectrum sunscreens, sunless tanning extenders, lip therapy treatments, relaxing lip balms, and soothing face masks for treating sunburns - ouch! Remember, presentation is everything. Clean out your old products and freshen up your display in a way that’s organized and visually appealing. Offer discounts or specials on products used during your services! Leaving with new goodies will be the cherry on top to their sun-sational spa experience!

• Strawberries are an excellent source of vitamin C and are great for the immune system, brain, and blood pressure. Just one serving alone has over 50 percent of your daily value of vitamin C. Keep it simple and offer a fruit bowl or pair the juicy edible with yogurt. Better yet, top it off on a sweetand-savory fennel and arugula salad. • Celery and cucumbers are a great source of silica, a trace mineral that strengthens the body’s connective tissues, including the muscles, hair, cartilage, bones, and is crucial for skin elasticity. Celery can be a fantastic snack to enjoy with carrots and a creamy dip. Cucumbers are perfect for salads LNEonline.com

COAST TO COAST

See how these spas are localizing their menus by Carrie Borzillo

Using local ingredients has long been a staple of the spa industry. But more spas are finding additional ways to tap into what is truly unique about their region to create specialty treatments that best represent their state. It’s not just a great way to support your local vendors, but also a way to capture the essence of the area to give your clients another reason to come back. From using the seacoast roses of Maine to the mist of the Hawaiian Islands, we go coast to coast to find five spas that have crafted treatments that honor and celebrate their regions.

skin Coast to Coast massage therapist uses a warm peach oil, crafted in-house, for the customized massage, concluding with a hair and scalp massage to soothe and quiet the mind. Of course, the sweet peach aroma is both relaxing and uplifting, but the peach has other purposes. “Peaches contain a rich source of minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants, which aid in the health and condition of the skin,” explains Mercier.

THE SOUTHWEST

NEW ENGLAND Arguably, one of the best places in the country to experience all four seasons is New England. Because of that, The Spa at Cliff House in Cape Neddick, Maine has created a Seasonal Salt of the Sea (50 min, $170, 80 min, $235) menu using elements specific to Spring, Summer, Late Summer (a.k.a., Indian Summer), Autumn, and Winter. “Different variations of techniques and massage strokes are used to align the body with the specific season and custom blends of essential oils are chosen for treatment depending on the season,” says Director of Spa Dinara Lewis. For example, the winter experience celebrates the Winter Solstice, which marks the beginning of the season of rest and replenishment and is identified with the element of water. “Water is the circulatory system of the earth and is associated with going inward, cleaning, time to reflect, and detox. So we have thoughtfully created a treatment that supports these essential needs for the body and mind throughout the season,” she says. The massage starts with an inhouse scrub blend using local sea salt, local seacoast roses, lavender, and coconut oil to invigorate the skin and encourage blood flow, followed by breathing in the seasonal oil (ginger root, clove, cardamom, and sweet orange) to encourage the nasal passages to reopen. “Then, using hand-carved hot salt stones, the massage therapist 26

focuses on kidney and bladder meridians, adding reflexology to kidney and bladder points to stimulate the detoxification process that is so important during the winter season,” she explains. Going with the water theme, among the key ingredients for the massage oil are Atlantic Ocean marine extracts such as laminaria digitata extract (oarweed), an algae that acts as a natural antioxidant, and ulva denestrata (sea lettuce), which has a detoxifying effect. The treatment concludes with a Tibetan bowl placed on the guest’s back to balance the upper and lower chakras while letting it reverberate and ground the guest.

THE SOUTH Peaches are a true symbol of Georgia, also known as The Peach State. Waldorf Astoria Spa at Waldorf Astoria Atlanta Buckhead in Atlanta, Georgia honors this favored fruit with the Peachtree Indulgence (110 min, $290 on weekdays and $325 on weekends), a serene journey aimed to restore the body’s balance. “We tap into local influences wherever we can. Offering a signature spa treatment that celebrates our state’s prized peach is one way in which we do this,” says General Manager Stephane Mercier. Peachtree Indulgence kicks off with a dry body brush to soften the skin, followed by a sea salt scrub infused with sweet almond oil for hydration. The

It’s hard not to think of Arizona without an image of its famed red clay landscape. The Sedona mud used in the Down to Earth and Sea Body Detox (135 min, $330) at the CIVANA Wellness Resort & Spa in Carefree, Arizona is a Southwest (adobe) red clay. It is rich in minerals and trace elements that help draw toxins, neutralize free radicals, and high in magnesium to soothe sore muscles. The treatment consists of a layered body wrap, full body massage, and nourishing scalp treatment. First up is a full-body exfoliation using a dry brush mitt followed by a rhythmic application of a rosemary and ginger exfoliation. The seaweed application follows. “Seaweed provides a powerhouse of nutrition, helps promote elimination, and oxygenates the tissue,” says Lead Esthetician and Spa Treatment Supervisor Briana Richardson. Next up is the mud. “Red clay is an effective and natural way to stimulate circulation, and soften, tone, and purify the skin and body. It basically replenishes the good and takes away the bad. ous mountain regions - the local Rocky Mountains, as well as the distant Alps and Himalayas. “The Rocky Mountain Journey treatments are inspired by the natural beauty of the Vail Valley and the healing traditions of the Native Americans who gathered indigenous herbs to soothe the mind, body, and spirit,” explains Spa Manager Allison Lomax. Ponderosa Pine Therapy (75-min, $195) is a body treatment featuring a moist, heated poultice of pine, lavender, and sage, and compression on the body. Light stretching, combined with targeted deep tissue massage, is incorporated throughout the session. “Steaming the poultice allows the natural essential oils of the herbs to be released and absorbed into the body. The healing benefit of pine, lavender, and sage synergistically combined promotes relaxation, increases circulation and cleanses, nourishes and detoxifies the body naturally,” says Lomax. Pine trees are a symbol of longevity and wisdom to many Native American tribes. “This sacred tree is used in Native American ceremonies to bring harmony together with nature. The stimulating and unique aroma of pine helps alleviate inflammation, soothes

does rosewater provide an unparalleled hydration level, but it also adds a lovely aroma to the treatment,” she adds.

CALIFORNIAN WINE COUNTRY Nestled within the vineyards of a winery, Sense, A Rosewood Spa at Rosewood CordeValle in San Martin, California, combines local wine with roses from their garden to create the anti-aging and hydrating, Wine & Rose Facial (90 min, $240). “This appeals to guests who are seeking a unique spa experience that really immerses them in the destination,” says Spa Director Michelle Christensen. The facial features red wine, which has anti-aging properties from resveratrol - an antioxidant that fights free radicals coming from pollution and sun exposure. “The antioxidants in wine can restore collagen and skin elasticity, having visible benefits for wrinkles and fine lines. They also help protect your skin’s natural barrier, bolstering protection against UV rays, can improve complexion by evening out skin tone, reduce inflammation, and fight/prevent acne due to its antiseptic and antibacterial properties,” she explains. As for the roses part of the treatment, rosewater is used, providing significant hydration to the skin. “Not only

THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS To truly tap into Hawaii’s natural resources, the spa menu was developed by Hawaii Rainforest Naturals’ co-founder and Hawaiian cultural practitioner Melia Goodenow. Manoa Mist (80 min, $215) at The Ritz-Carlton Spa, Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii, is inspired by the upland forests of Mānoa, where mists blow down onto Waikiki. The revitalizing experience includes a full-body organic sugar scrub, Lomi Lomi (a Hawaiian massage technique using the forearm to deliver long, soothing strokes), and a gentle mist to awaken the senses. It features the healing Olena, which is Hawaiian’s variety of turmeric and the native lehua blossoms. “Olena encourages vitality and rejuvenation of the body and is believed to contain antioxidants and healing properties. Our sugar scrub is crafted using wild Lehua blossom honey, leaving skin smooth and fullynourished,” says Director of Sales and Marketing Sandy Narvaez. The combination of oil and massage releases toxins and stress within the body resulting in a feeling of rejuvenation and increased energy. “The connection with our land is sealed through a mist inspired by Manoa Valley. The mist is a specialized blend from Hawaiian Rainforest Naturals that combines wild lehua, azalea, and bamboo orchid flower essences and completes the experience by releasing emotional tension,” adds Narvaez.

TOGETHER WE RISE

Emerging stronger post COVID-19 by Nicole Kenny

COVID-19 has profoundly impacted the professional beauty industry. Having to shut doors and cease providing services was not something many would have seen coming. In a matter of minutes, livelihoods were lost, and the future became unknown. We can all likely agree that COVID-19 has changed the world. However, that change is offering the opportunity of a lifetime for the professional beauty industry. Post COVID-19, there will be a new normal. Like the aftermath of a house fire, things may seem bleak now. But like winter turns to spring, the post-pandemic era will have a period of rebirth. The professional beauty market has the opportunity to rise like a phoenix from the ashes and

emerge from the catastrophe caused by COVID-19 to become stronger, smarter, and more powerful. Reopening after COVID-19 should not be thought of as a hardship. This is an opportunity to show strength and perseverance. This is an opportunity to rebrand and rebuild who you are and show your clients just how much you care about their health. Infection prevention is not new to the professional beauty industry. Regulations and guidelines for opening and running a business have been in place for some time. Public Health or other Governmental Inspectors audit your facilities to determine if you are conducting yourselves appropriately, and verify that the treatments you provide your clients will not do them harm.

business Together We Rise The public, your clients, have learned more during the pandemic about infection control than they knew previously. We all clean at home. We all wash our hands, albeit with varying levels of frequency and efficacy. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted how infections are transmitted. People are concerned with touching public surfaces, and your clients have become more aware of their surroundings. If you’re wondering how you are going to make a go of it after returning to your empty salon, don’t fret. This is where you, like the phoenix, can rise above the flames and chaos. The professional beauty industry has an advantage. Beauty clients are loyal. During the treatments and services you have been providing, you have built connections and trust. There may be some clients that you even call friends. As professionals, you already have a solid background in infection prevention and control. You have been trained in how not to let infections occur on your watch. You understand the need to clean and disinfect surfaces, tools, and implements between clients. Unlike most of the public, when the pandemic hit, you already knew how to clean and disinfect effectively. You already knew the importance of washing your hands or using hand sanitizer. When your clients walk in the door, stand with your head high, and proudly show them what you know. Provide them the comfort and confidence that you have their best interest at heart. Have a hand sanitizer station front and center when they walk through the door. Ask your clients to use it when they arrive and explain why you have implemented it. The aesthetic of a hand sanitizer station may not have been something that fits with your vision of beauty and tranquility, but we have all learned from the pandemic about the importance of keeping our hands clean. Do you know what your clients have touched before arriving? Setting the stage that everyone who walks in the door sanitizes their hands is a great way to illustrate 34

July2020

LNEonline.com

the heightened level of infection prevention you have implemented, and how much you care for their health. Most importantly, before you start treatment, wash your hands or use hand sanitizer in front of your client. Be sure to spend time catching up and re-establishing the rapport you had prior to the pandemic. In the beginning, you may want to allow more time for treatments and services to allow for this. While you’re rebuilding the rapport, use this time to educate your clients and show them what you know. Talk to them about the infection control requirements you must follow. More importantly, tell them where you exceed them.

This is where you, like the phoenix, can rise above the flames and chaos.

Meeting requirements shows that you know what you need to do, but exceeding them shows how you take their health seriously on a personal level. For example, talk to them about the disinfectants you use for cleaning your treatment area surfaces. Are you using a product you buy at your local grocery store, or can you tell them you use a hospital-grade disinfectant? Talk to them about contact time, which is the length of time that a disinfectant needs to stay wet on a surface to work properly, and the fact that you have chosen a product with a short contact time so that you’re confident any lingering microbes are eradicated. When it comes to the implements and tools you use for your treatments, exceeding the level of disinfection needed is another way of showing how you are differentiating yourself

from your competitors. What are you currently using? A high-level disinfectant or chemical sterilant can offer an additional layer of protection to your client. Better yet, these solutions are designed to be re-used over several days or weeks, meaning you do not need to dispose of the product daily. Not only do you have the ability to tell your clients you are exceeding the requirements for disinfection, but now you can also tell them you have improved your environmental stewardship by not disposing as much disinfectant back into the environment. In the post-pandemic era, people are going to question the things they had always taken for granted. They now know what bacteria, viruses, and other microbes are, where they can be found, and how they cause disease. But perhaps most impactful is that the public will have gained a sense of responsibility to take reasonable action to prevent transmission and protect themselves. This is your moment to shine. This is your moment to rise like a phoenix from the ashes to show how responsible you are. Embrace the challenge and opportunity that COVID-19 is providing. Stand up and defiantly say, “I am stronger for the experience and ready to meet whatever challenges tomorrow may bring.”

She is the Vice President of Technology Platform Marketing at Virox Technologies Inc., and has been involved in a number of guideline committees including the CSA Decontamination Subcommittee, and is currently a member of IPAC-Canada's Corporate Relations Committee and IPACCanada's Scientific Program Committee. How to provide virtual skincare consultations to your clients at home! by Katie Marshall

Virtual skin consultations will become one of the smartest ways’ technology can address the post-COVID-19 professional skincare world. If you’re wondering what a virtual consultation is, it is a remote video conference that takes place between an esthetician and their client via video link. Much like an in-office consultation, a virtual consultation lets the esthetician speak directly to the client to discuss their current skin concerns and goals. The esthetician works with the client to find customized skincare products and at-home treatment solutions that fit the clients’ unique concerns and lifestyle.

THE BENEFITS By mastering this approach, both estheticians and clients will experience many benefits, including saving time and money for the client as virtual consultations may cost less than in-office meetings. Furthermore, online consultations will result in increased satisfaction for the client whose preference is detailed feedback for product utilization vs. in-person office visits. While there are clients who will continue to need hands-on therapy, there are many

who need expert product direction as much if not more than a facial. Keep in mind; retail sales are the gift that keeps giving! Used wisely, the application of virtual consultations in beauty, health, and wellness industries is a modernization step that frankly is long overdue. Virtual consultations will now become available to many out of town clients or busy professionals who are looking to discuss their skin concerns and did not have the time to do so before. The beauty in this is that you can meet with clients anywhere in the world at their convenience.

BOOKING VIRTUAL CONSULTATIONS There are several methods to promote online bookings. Consider the following: • Add a web page or link about virtual consultation services to your business website and/or online booking app. • Promote virtual consultation services through social media, newsletter, and your blog.

THE PROCESS 1 The client schedules and pays for their Virtual Consultation via the online scheduling system or PayPal invoice. 2 The client confirms his or her email and fills out a detailed digital health questionnaire asking about his or her skin concerns, skin health goals, diet, medications, supplements, lifestyle, stress management. 3 After completing the digital form, the client will need to submit the information along with photos of the skin twenty-four hours before the virtual consultation. These should be clear and well-lit photos of the skin and face with no expression and should be sent via email to the esthetician. These include: • Front/Center. • Left. • Left at 45-degree angle. • Right. • Right at 45-degree angle. When it comes time for the consultation, it is recommended that both the client and the esthetician are in a welllit room for optimal viewing purposes. Clients need to be makeup-free, and any additional questions and concerns should be discussed in detail in the consultation. The esthetician will review the information before the virtual consultation by analyzing the client’s photos and digital questionnaire. Are there any red flags? Are they using the wrong products for their skin type/condition? Is there too much dairy consumption causing acne? Or perhaps they are shiftworkers experiencing dark under-eye circles. These are all factors that should be considered. The skin is a two-sided organ and exhibits clues to what is going on inside the body. Estheticians are not doctors, but they know enough about how the body and skin function to educate their clients about their skin health and what 38

they think should be discussed with their doctor and nutritionist.

PLATFORMS AND APPS Several online communication platforms are available for the client to download. The esthetician or business would have to set up these programs/ apps with each client to execute reliable communication. Each of these virtual options are compatible with the most used operating systems like Windows, Mac, and Linux, as well as most devices, including PC, notepad, Android, and iPhone. The following platforms are just a few options available: • Skype • FaceTime • Google Hangouts • WhatsApp • Facebook Messenger • Zoom • Lifestorm • Google Duo • Online booking software that has Telehealth built-in Asking the Right Questions Virtual consultation questions are identical to in-office questions. Estheticians may ask their clients several questions ranging from genetics, sleep patterns, current nutritional habits, general lifestyle, hormones, medications, supplements, and gut health all the way through to stress levels and what their current skincare regime looks like. This will provide a starting point and road map toward the clients’ journey to clear, radiant skin.

2 Appointments should be $75 - $125 and roughly 30 to 45 minutes long. The esthetician will review the client’s progress, make adjustments to the client’s skincare routine, and answer any questions the client might have to ensure they are on the path to clear skin. 3 The client should be added to your communication database in order to keep them apprised of new information, promotions, skin health tips, product sales, and special events. 4 Set up auto-ship for products to be sent to clients so that there are no usage lapses. This is particularly critical for acne clientele. Sweeten the autoship process by always including a deluxe sample and detailed skincare tip. Clients want to take charge of their selfcare – guide them in how to do it well. For many years, virtual consultations have been used to enable clients, near and far, to access expert services without making multiple trips to the spa/ clinic. Due to COVID19, virtual consultations will become even more popular in the esthetic community. Done correctly, estheticians can provide highly accurate and personalized consultations with clients remotely, limiting the number of visitors in the spa while still producing revenue.

CLEANSER

101

The RIGHT cleanser for your skin type by Nerida Joy

What's the most important part of your daily skincare regimen? Most of us would probably pick a favorite serum or moisturizer, something with ingredients like AHA, retinol, or vitamin C. But the truth is that 50% of a successful regimen depends on your type of cleanser and how well you're cleansing. The reason a lot of people don't get the results they want from their skin is because they're not cleansing their skin properly. Taking the time to cleanse thoroughly every day with the right cleanser is the only way to get the best possible results for healthy, balanced skin.

Facial Cleansing Guide

Why You Don't See Results The most common mistake for all skin types is the use of a foaming cleanser, which (in most cases) will dry and tighten the outer layer of your skin. Surface dryness acts as a barrier, trapping the oils inside, causing congestion, enlarged pores, and preventing your treatment products from being adequately absorbed into the skin. Even true oily skin can be oily and congested underneath and have a dry, irritated surface which throws the skin off balance. A dry outer layer has an aging effect on the skin as well, making your skin look falsely lined and wrinkled. We call this premature aging. A cleanser's only job is to gently sweep away make-up, grime, and sebum, leaving the skin feeling soft, supple, and perfectly prepared to receive your treatment serum and moisturizer. It's so important to get this right because this is what can make or break the synergy to your complete home care regimen. If you're not sure whether or not your cleanser is foaming, you can tell if you see suds when you add water to 48

wash your face. Your skin should never feel tight or stripped of essential moisture after cleansing. A great cleanser will leave your skin feeling clean, soft, and supple. Watch out, too, for cleansers with added granular exfoliants. Used daily, they can toughen and thicken the skin's outer layer, preventing the oil from getting out. This is where enlarged pores and congestion starts, and it's downhill from there if the cleanser is not corrected. Detoxifying cleansers that promise to draw out impurities can also be too much stimulation for everyday use and can cause active breakouts. And although make-up wipes can be handy in a pinch, steer clear of regular use of face wipes as well. They just don't cleanse your skin well enough!

see suds when you rinse them off your face, and they won't leave your skin feeling tight and squeaky clean. The key is being thorough and consistent. If you have been using a foaming cleanser and are dealing with a dry, irritated surface but have oil and congestion underneath, then a week or two of using a gentle non-foaming cleanser should be enough to calm and rebalance your skin's barrier and start seeing improvement. Here are other types of cleansers you can use:

Non-foaming gel or gelee cleanser: These cleansers are especially good because they work with all ages of every skin type. Look for one with a smooth texture and a nice consistency. You need your cleanser to have some body to it, so it does not disappear quickly while massaging it into your skin. Massage it in circular motions getting under any fine facial hair for at least 30 seconds. A good cleanser cleans and absorbs impurities and dead cells, leaving your skin feeling clean and fresh.

Choosing the Right Cleanser

Milk or cream cleanser: If you have dry,

So how do you find a gentle cleanser that will effectively clean your skin without drying it? There are several different kinds of non-foaming cleansers: gels or gelee, milks or creams, oils or balms, and water-based cleansers. You won't

sensitive, or mature skin, you could try a milk or cream cleanser. These are great because they're gentle on the skin and leave a comfortable, clean surface. They do the complete opposite of stripping the skin – instead, they clean the skin

Facial Cleansing Guide leaving it hydrated. If you live somewhere with hot, humid summers and long, icy winters, they're also fantastic during the colder months when your skin needs some extra TLC.

Oil or balm cleansers: These cleansers can be a good choice for combination skin. They're often used as the first cleanse to the double cleanse PM step for removing make-up. Lighter than milk cleansers, oil or balm cleansers give a similar level of hydration. This benefits winter skin that's being stripped by extreme temperature as you move between dry, centrally heated indoors and the cold, harsh outdoors. Water-based cleansers: Gentle waterbased cleansers are used for an incredibly light cleanse. This type of cleanser can be the second cleanse to your PM double cleanse regimen, or it can be used as your AM cleanser. Although refreshing, it's not considered a thorough cleansing solution. Whatever your skin type, sub-conditions, and lifestyle are, you can be sure there is a perfect cleanser for you. That's why it's worth putting a little time into finding that "right" cleanser that will streamline and support your skincare regimen for balanced, healthy skin. Here are some of my favorite ingredients I look for in my cleansing products: Aloe vera is healing, calming, and soothing, perfect for setting up your skin to receive the rest of your products. Carrot juice is a strong antioxidant that's high in vitamins A, C, E and K, and is excellent for sun-damaged skin of all ages. Chamomile extract protects, calms, and balances even sensitive skin types.

Glycerin gently removes dead skin cells and moisturizes your skin without leaving oil behind. Red algae is a rich source of nutrients that's packed with vitamins and minerals to feed the skin and keep it healthy. How to Cleanse Effectively! Once you've found a cleanser that works for your skin, it's time to focus on your cleansing technique. You should cleanse your face once in the morning and twice at night, especially if you're wearing make-up or sunblock (and we should all be wearing sunblock daily). There will often still be residue from the day left on your skin after the first cleanse, so double cleansing gives you a clean slate that allows your products to be absorbed properly.

and around your eyes.

3 Then put a quarter-sized amount of cleanser on your fingertips and begin working it into your face with circular motions, massaging the cleanser in for 30–60 seconds. Make sure to cleanse your whole face: forehead, cheeks, chin, nose, upper-lip area, neck and behind the ears. Really work the cleanser into the skin in a circular motion to get under any fine facial hair you may have on the sides of your face.

4 Finally, rinse the cleanser off with a clean, warm wet washcloth and pat dry. Apply the same amount of cleanser if double cleansing and work it into your face in the same way for another 30– 60 seconds before rinsing it off again. Follow with your serum and moisturizer.

Take your time and be thorough: patience and consistency are the key to fast results.

CLEANSE. RINSE. REPEAT. A two-step cleansing process to prep the skin for the ultimate facial by Kasey Boone

Cleansing is simple yet extremely important and effective when performed. It is often overlooked due to its simplicity. It is crucial that you double-cleanse every client that walks through your doors and train your staff to do the same. Not only because it effectively cleanses the skin, but it helps your clients relax and sets the tone for the treatment. It is imperative to prep the skin for the desired treatment or service. Performing a facial without properly cleansing the skin is a disservice to your client. No esthetician should apply products to non-prepped skin. Whether you are performing a 90-minute facial, a chemical peel, or any other service, a double cleanse is a MUST. Double cleansing is as simple as it sounds. Cleansing the skin twice with two different cleansers. This not only gives the skin a more thorough cleanse but gets the skin ready to allow for other skincare products to penetrate more easily. Here are a few tips to give your clients the best cleanse of their lives. It will have them hooked, and you BOOKED as they come back for more.

Facial Cleansing Guide

FIRST CLEANSE Let's get to work. It is best to go for an oil cleanser or some type of gentle cleanser for the first cleanse. This removes makeup, dirt, and oil while allowing you to let the skin start speaking to you by feeling the skin's health hydration, texture, and elasticity. You will also begin to get a feel as to how your client's skin will react. Are they becoming sensitized or reactive quickly? Are they dehydrated? You really need to pay close attention by using your hands and eyes to get a true feel for your client's skin. Once you've chosen your cleanser, you will thoroughly apply and massage it to the face, neck, and decollete for 60 to 90 seconds. It is best to apply the cleanser first to the skin without any water. Next is time to get the steam rolling, unless your client has extremely sensitive skin or rosacea, which should be determined in your evaluation. You will want to add water to emulsify the cleanser for another 60 to 90 seconds to begin pulling dirt, oil, and product from the skin. Think of this as the time to get to know your client's skin and get them in the mood to relax and enjoy their facial. Once you feel you have thoroughly cleansed the skin, remove ALL of the cleanser. My personal preference is to use sponges for this step, but you can also use a warm towel or wet 4x4.

SECOND CLEANSE The skin should be clean of any product or residue before starting the second cleanse. Now, you are going to select your second cleanser. Again, this is dependent on the skin type of your client. For the second cleanse, if they are inflamed or sensitized, I will stick with a gentle cleanser. If not, I prefer to use a gentle exfoliating cleanser to start removing any build-up on the client's skin. You are going to generously apply the cleanser to the face, neck, and decollete. Thoroughly massage and manipulate for at least 60 to 90 sec52

You really need to pay close attention by using your hands and eyes to get a true feel for your client's skin. onds. Next, add water to emulsify and continue to cleanse the skin. Be sure to take the time to focus on each area of the face, neck, and decollete, for another 60 to 90 seconds minimum. Think light to medium pressure, working up from the decollete with long and circular motions and then up to the neck. Let me emphasize UP on all areas to fight gravity and help keep the skin lifted. Lastly, it is the face where you will focus thoroughly on each area, including the chin, jawline, cheeks, nose, and forehead. Taking time, care, and a little love in each area. At this point, your client should be melting into the facial bed and falling in love with you. There is a reason my clients say I have "magic hands," and I have had my books full for many years because of it. Now that your client's skin has been thoroughly doubled cleansed be sure to remove all of the product completely. Please don't leave a soapy residue; this can feel uncomfortable to the client, irritate the skin, and could negatively affect the next steps of your treatment. Now that you have thoroughly double cleansed your client's skin, you have removed all dirt, oil, product, makeup, and residue, as well as evaluated their skin and determined their skin type, it is time to treat the skin. You are ready to create the best facial plan or treatment for your client. I highly encourage you to double cleanse every client thoroughly. I cannot stress enough about prepping the skin and not overlooking this simple yet extremely effective part of a facial. I can say this with confidence, because I have seen a difference in my skin as well as my client's skin when the double-cleanse method is performed properly.

GLOW TIP Try this method on your skin at home. Not only will you see and feel a difference in your own skin's health but you will be confident in understanding the importance and benefits of double cleansing. Plus, after 13+ years as a licensed esthetician, I believe so strongly that you should practice what you preach. This benefits you, your skin's health and grows the confidence to help and treat your client's skin in the treatment room.

Enhance the spa experience with this exquisite element: water. by Ashley Sachs

We need water to survive, this we do not question, but do we understand all of the reasons why and how water is so essential and beneficial to our life? There is an overwhelming amount of research proving that water’s healing abilities extend far beyond hydration. What I hope to offer here is a new perspective on water by exploring some of its mysteries and perhaps some inspiration on how to incorporate H2O in new ways into your personal, professional lives, and environments in order to benefit from the full spectrum of its healing powers.

Water Helps us Breath Visualize yourself standing on the edge of a body of water and taking in a huge inhale. If it seems as though you’re able to inhale deeper, and the breath is more invigorating when you’re standing at the water’s edge, it’s because you actually are taking in more oxygen. We crave fresh air when we’re stressed for a reason, it balances levels of serotonin (the mood and health hormone) but when we are around water, the already powerful oxygen actually increases its power because it is charged with negative ions from the water which help us absorb oxygen better.

Water is Alive As crazy as it sounds, there is insurmountable scientific evidence that proves water is a living thing and has the ability to retain information. This scientific evidence provides explanation and understanding to the question of how human beings were capable of achieving so much with so little. The information ancient civilizations needed for survival was in the water they drank, 60

July2020

LNEonline.com

bathed in, and worshiped. These civilizations were founded only around bodies of water; if there was no source, there was no life. Similarly, the people in Okinawa, Japan (one of five locations in the world where research shows people live the longest, and are the healthiest) contribute their longevity to drinking water revitalized from their 600 million year old coral reef. They believe this reef has imprinted the information about longevity which is then downloaded to the human who then tunes into this information for a long life. Dr. Masaru Emoto, a Japanese author and scientist, performed an experiment by exposing water to Mozart to prove that human consciousness has an effect on the molecular structure of water (and vice versa since humans are mostly composed of water). You can witness the transformation from an unsymmetrical blob into a beautiful hexagonal snowflake-looking crystal. It’s as if the molecule of water is alive and goes from a depressive state to a state

of bliss from the sounds of beautiful music. These fascinating experiments, and many more, were documented in the documentary The Secret of Water.

Blue Equals Green There is one more vital piece of evidence proving just how beneficial being around water is to the human body, mind and soul, and that is: blue equals green. Real estate data suggests a water view tacks a 116.1 percent premium on a property, and real-world figures suggest we’re willing to pay 10 to 20 percent more for the same room with an ocean view in a hotel. So does that mean that clients will be drawn to your spa simply for its water feature in the lobby or pay more for services if water is part of the experience? Absolutely!

Five Senses Water Checklist So how can you incorporate this information into your spa to enhance the client experience? By making sure water has a strong presence in your space, an easy way to accomplish this is to make

sure your spa passes the Five Senses Water Checklist.

Sound “When we are by the water, it cuts us off from the rattle and hum of modern society,” says Wallace J. Nichols, author of Blue Mind: The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In, On, or Under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected, and Better at What You Do (another brilliant resource). “Moving water is an expert at masking noise, especially the sound of the human voice,” he says, noting that the human voice is considered the number one source of workplace stress. Offer your clients the sounds of water either from a physical water feature or a soundtrack played throughout the spa. Giving clients the experience of being “surrounded” by water is the ultimate way to reduce stress and increase client satisfaction.

experience of being at your spa using the olfactory system, you can create a powerful opportunity to remind your clients to return to their sanctuary. You could make this as simple as burning candles or diffusing oils, or you could take it to the next level by creating a signature scent for your spa that you can also turn into a retail opportunity; making a lasting and memorable impression long after a client leaves the space.

Taste Most spas offer their clients water to drink but consider upleveling your hydration offerings to really stand out. Instead of handing your client a plastic bottle of water, how about creating an “aqua bar” or “hydration station” offering themed-water. Imagine how special your clients would feel if they could choose between “happy water” or “calm water”, each infused with themed music, fruit or veggies (e.g. lemon for happy, cucumber for calm).

Touch When we physically immerse our bodies in water, we are resting the muscles that we use every day. Not only that, but when we surrender to gravity our brains are able to take a somatic break resulting in extreme relaxation. This science is the basis of the popular and quickly increasing float therapy experience. Water is already an essential element used in spas and salons, but consider implementing services or options before or after a service where a client can feel water in some way. Even a simple and affordable service like a foot soak would provide your clients with the benefits of being in water.

ing imagery of water in pictures, murals, and decor around the spa which is scientifically proven to make people’s stress levels drop. By making sure a client experiences water using all five senses while at your spa, you will surely give them the feeling of being whisked away to a relaxing vacation, guaranteeing client satisfaction and referrals. Water has the ability to make a profound impact on our bodies, minds and spirits. By expanding our knowledge and our relationship to and with this healing element and respecting it as a living being, it just might start flowing more vitality, longevity, happiness, calmness and even financial abundance into our lives.

Smell When you first think of water, you may not always relate it to a smell, but the second you get a whiff of something that reminds you of an experience (like salt air reminding you of being on vacation) you are instantly transported to that place and time in your life. ACUPUNCTURE

FOR ANXIETY

A whole system approach to mental health by Anabel De La Vega

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical technique that has been used to relieve pain, cure diseases, and maintain general health. It is a method that is used routinely in China as an anesthetic for surgeries. Rather than separating physical and mental aspects, acupuncture takes on a whole system approach to health and believes that the body and mind are intimately tied together. In the US, acupuncture is used as a form of complementary and alternative medicine and has become very popular in treating a wide range of conditions, including generalized anxiety disorder and panic attacks. By regulating the nervous system and other parts of the body to a more balanced state, acupuncture can help reduce the symptoms of anxiety and impact how the body triggers the fight or flight response.

IMBALANCES IN THE BODY When an imbalance causes disease or any physical pain, our Yin and Yang suffer, and our energy is disrupted. Acupuncture is used to balance any obstruction of pathways associated with the 12 meridians, also known as acupoints and energy vessels. These meridians function as a network and can be mapped out throughout the entire body. The twelve primary meridians connect to the Zang-fu organs and transport qi (life energy) and xue (blood) throughout the body. There are 5 Zang and 6 Fu organs. The 5 Zang organs are the heart, lungs, spleen, kidney, and liver. The 6 Fu organs are the stomach, gallbladder, large intestine, small intestine, stomach, and urinary bladder. With all of these organs flowing together, it is easy to control our Qi, blood, and body fluids. By balancing the flow of different organs, we can reduce or eliminate pain and restore our wellbeing.

HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK? Acupuncture consists of inserting small metal needles in the face and the body to control headaches and other illnesses. These needles must be inserted into precise points on the body and have to be 0.1 to 0.4 inches in depth, while some require up to 10 inches. Treatments in acupuncture should be done at least 10 or 12 times to feel and see great results. After several treatments, follow-ups in between 4 to 8 weeks are recommended.

ACUPUNCTURE FOR ANXIETY Anxiety is one of the most common mental illnesses worldwide, with women twice more likely to suffer from the condition than men. Many people suffer from anxiety, but some are unable to manage it in stressful situations. A person with an anxiety disorder may be overloaded with thoughts of excessive worry and fear, and fail to develop ways of coping. Some common 64

July2020

symptoms of anxiety include irregular heartbeat, nervousness, restlessness, and feeling tense. The condition may be difficult to treat depending on how high the level of anxiety is for the person. Acupuncture can help alleviate these symptoms, which can have a significant impact on the quality of lives of those who suffer. These includes symptoms of: • Restlessness. • Difficulty concentrating. • Falling asleep. • Fatigue. • Nausea. • Muscle tension. • Headaches. • Lack of control. • Irritability.

HOW IS ANXIETY TREATED? Acupuncture for anxiety can be addressed by assessing the spirit, essence, energy, blood, fluids, organs, and channels. An acupuncturist can identify imbalances by observing a person’s posture, skin tone, brightness of eyes, tongue, pulse, voice, and smell. In traditional Chinese medicine, treat-

ments for anxiety are unique to each person, as every person has their own composition and imbalances. Therefore, the acupuncturist can adjust and issue the treatment based on the assessment of the patient. Traditional Chinese medicine treats physical health issues that are connected with a person’s emotional state and each emotion is related to the organs and their functions. Emotions have 7 categories, with each emotion corresponding to a particular organ. Anxiety creates a lot of energy that is also referred to as heat energy. Acupuncture addresses this issue by enabling the energy to move more efficiently, balancing the organ systems and creating homeostasis. The idea of creating balanced energy better equips a person to manage stress and emotions, and helps the person to feel more at peace. Some of the acupuncture points for anxiety are: • Governing Vessel 24, which is located on the centerline of your head, about a half inch into the hair line. This point is indicated for anxiety, palpitations,

organic & wellness Acupuncture for Anxiety

headaches, insomnia and vertigo. This point is calming and is said to quiet the heart and calm the spirit. When there is too much Qi in the upper part of the head, these types of health problems can result. Too much mental work going on can cause or exacerbate the problem, and this point helps to alleviate that. • Governing Vessel 11, which is located along the spine, about half way down the shoulder blades. If you ever wondered why the area between your shoulders blades gets tight or sore when you are anxious or under stress, now you know why. So, depending where the needles go, acupuncture can cause the system to produce painkilling chemicals, the body’s natural ability to heal itself, or stimulate the part of the brain that controls emotions, including anxiety.

Wearing a mask for 12 hour shifts caused skin sloughing for a nurse who works at a Minneapolis hospital. A friend gave her a bottle of BiON Pure Hydration to use. " I was amazed that the very next time I worked, and washed my face, my skin felt great without any sloughing! I appreciate that there is a product that can help." Renee RN

BiON has since donated Pure Hydration & Oil Free Moisturizers to the nurses at her hospital.

Anxiety can be powerful and resistant both physically and mentally. When it comes to treating the disorder, prevention is better than any cure. Lack of exercise will play a significant role in anxiety. Therefore, adopting healthful ways to relieve stress is important. Through acupuncture, you can grasp a better control of your mind and soul. There is a saying: “Do the basics for your health to create longevity.” Acupuncture seeks to address the body, emotions, mind, and spirit. Its goal is to create harmony within ourselves and between the world. Integrating this practice into your life can help calm your anxiety and allow you to live a more peaceful life.

SEXY SUNKISSED LEGS Sunless secrets that will put the short back into short shorts by Veronique Munro

Summer has arrived and not too soon for most of us! This year more than ever, your customers will be excited about getting outside and enjoying some much-needed outdoor time. Before slipping on those short-shorts or cute little sundresses, thoughts of spider veins, post-quarantine flab, or pale legs will be at the forefront of many minds, and it will be to you they turn to in search of those sexy sun-kissed legs! During the lockdown, many salons and spas have switched from providing services to selling products, both online and in-store. This change means that now, not only will you offer spray tans that create the desired results, but you can also sell at-home products to those who are less inclined to venture out, and teach them how to achieve stunning results at home.

Whether you are offering the service and/or selling products to make legs strut-worthy, preparation and aftercare are key.

Choosing the correct color and intensity and how it is applied will make or break the results.

OUT WITH THE OLD During the winter months, due to cold weather and poor circulation, our legs and feet often become dehydrated and can look and feel as if they have aged five or more years. Using an exfoliating mitt to slough away dead skin on the legs and feet will take years off and create a natural vibrancy, but not only that, the tan will develop better. The ideal time to sluff is three days leading up to the day of the tan. For the next three days, while the skin regenerates, it is essential to recommend the use of a deep penetrating moisturizer, as this level of resurfacing removes the natural oils from the skin, and they must be replenished to prepare the skin. Then in the morning of sunless tanning, using a gentle non abrasive exfoliate will create the optimal canvas, without creating microtears, from which to start. Enzymatic scrubs are ideal for this.

IT’S ALL IN THE DELIVERY When it comes to at-home self-tanners, carry an array of delivery systems if possible. There are definite preferences in the world of self-tanning. Examples are mousses, gradual tanners, gels, or sprays. Of all the self-tanning options, mousses have gained popularity due to their ease of application. Together with the tanning mitt and a back applicator, it is easy to achieve a darker application without creating streaks. For customers with a fair complexion, a lot of dark spots, or looking for a hint of color, a gradual self-tanner may be just enough to start. As they adapt to the color and see how their skin reacts, they can apply more to increase the depth and intensity.

BARE AND RADIANT

FROM START TO FINISH

Hair removal should be done as close as possible to the sunless tan. If shaving the morning of, offer your customers an aloe-based PH Balancing treatment. This will coat the inside of the pores and prevent any dots from forming with the deposit of bronzer. If they are self-tanning at home, recommend that they apply aloe gel to their skin first. This will coat the pores as well.

The first step to creating flawless and sexy legs is to spray (or apply the tanner) evenly all over the legs. Once the desired intensity is achieved and the skin feels dry, begin contouring. The shape of the legs and thighs will determine where to shade. This will create an optimal shape of the upper part of the leg. For legs that are heavier or have saddlebags, a slimmer illusion can be created by applying a darker coat to the sides of the legs. By standing on the tippy toes, the calve muscle will become more prominent. Shade directly into the line on the side of the upper leg, down the center in the indentation, and you will create a slightly more muscular appearance. By working with the natural muscle tone and darkening the natural inden-

A WINNING FORMULA Choosing the correct color and intensity and how it is applied will make or break the results. It is always best to choose a base that works best with the complexion. For example, if the skin is on the golden side, using a violet base will cut any orange out and create a cooler Mediterranean tone. If the skin is on the lighter side, using a formula

70

with a lower DHA (Dyhydroxyacetone) will create a more natural tan without developing any orangey hues.

tations of the muscles, your customer will forget about any extra pounds collected from ‘quaranteating’ and will automatically look and feel as if they have been to the gym. Once the desired look has been created, take a finishing powder and dust all over the legs to set the tan. Use a shimmer powder or illuminator in the front quadrant and shin to create a youthful finish that glows. This is a trick used on models before they hit the runway!

AFTER ALL IS SAID AND DONE Once the perfect look has been created, maintenance is key. Nothing says sexy summer legs like soft skin and a healthy-looking glow. Because DHA can be drying to the skin, using a water-based moisturizer enriched with vitamins, hyaluronic acid, and skin enhancers will not only make the tan last longer but will improve the condition of the skin. One thing to remember, selftanning does not offer any sun protection, so always recommend an SPF to round off the perfect tan. With your tanning expertise and stellar self-tanning advice, your customers will feel confident as they strut their way through Summer, whether up close or 6 feet away! Though arguably, everyone looks their best from a 6-foot distance these days!
